Depends on what he likes. I'm almost out of my 20's but I've been trying to wear nicer things to work. This involves nicer shirts. So I need collar stays. They're a little expensive but way too badass if you can just whip one out and open something for someone. Part James Bond part Maxwell Smart. There are also companies that make plain (non tool) collar stays in exotic metals (tungsten, silver, titanium, gold, etc.)

---

If he's into knives there's:

  • This really light pocket folder.
  • This credit card thing that folds into a knife.

    ---

If he's an outdoorsman, sometimes you need to cut things down, so here's a pocket chainsaw. There's always sweedish fire steel as well.

    ---

If he likes tools there are tones of things to get him like this hydrolic wrench.

    ---

    Does he like some snacks?

  • Slant shack jerky? Holy crap, maybe a giftcard. Build your own jerky is an awesome idea. Doesn't look like they do those.
  • By that same token, then, maybe an Omaha Steaks giftcard. Have to be a bit high to make it effective. Probably not the best stocking stuffer then.
  • Maybe some beer candy. Beer caramel and taffy sounds wonderful more me. I'm not into hops but if your son likes IPAs or other hoppy beers he may like them.

    ---

Okay, so I'm a dork, but you really can't go wrong with Think Geek, Uncrate, ThisIsWhyImBroke, or just browsing around on Amazon.

All of the things that I have linked are really nice, unique, and a bit out of the ordinary. They're also all from my personal wishlist.

    Good luck

    ---

Edit: Slantshack does provide gift packs though... specifically a stocking stuffer.

Edit #2: I stand corrected, slantshack does provide gift cards! GO HERE.

Thanks for taking a look!! I really enjoyed doing this on a rainy Saturday night while drinking some Crown Royal Rye. I also carry a Field Notes Journal with a Fisher Space Pen occasionally. Here is a link to some more pictures.

Ok. So to summarize what you want:

Will be used for

  • light cutting (packages)
  • medium use (camping, I assume food/feathersticking/kindling/whittling)
  • Just in case (not sure if you mean self defense or in case you need it)
  • Emergency Use in car (Seatbelts)

    Some things you also mention

    >when I want to use it, I want it to do the job properly

You listed off a large range of tasks, an I personally feel that for all those things, some of the knives you are looking at might not be necessarily the best.

    My Thoughts

Firstly, I would advise against using any knife as a go-to seatbelt cutter. For safety reasons you don't want to accidentally stab the person whose seatbelt you want to cut. Especially since tanto blade shapes are designed to maximize tip strength for stabbing/penetration. For your emergency needs I feel this or this would be better.

As for camping, a tanto blade is not "ideal" but for the tasks you I assume you'll be doing I think you'll be ok. A blade with a nice belly (the curved part of a blade, like a drop point) has more utility as it will be easier to slice food, and offer you a bit better control. But I mean if you like the tanto shape than by all means =).

If you feel like you're not going to have it on your person everyday, then that Kershaw RJI should be more than sufficient for your needs. Just because Kershaw's price are lower, they definitely do not feel like "cheapies"! Kershaw has great build quality, 8cr13MoV is an OK steel, and will be easy to touch up.

I haven't had any experience with SOG so I can't say much about them, other than that /r/knives is a fan of the SOG Flash. As for ZT, they are wonderful knives. they are a little big to have in the pocket, but the quality and craftmanship is definitely there. For how lightly you will use it, If I were in your shoes, I am not sure if I can justify this as a first buy, unless you have a real appreciation for knives.

    Other Options

  • CRKT M16
  • SOG Flash 2
  • Kershaw Blur
  • Benchmade Griptilian

They are all around the same blade size, and same "look" as your suggested 3. The first 3 are around the same price range as the Kershaw RJI and are community proven knives. The last is around the price range of the ZT 0700, but in my opinion is a better buy. Griptilians are a joy to use.

That's my $0.02, hopefully I didn't overwhelm you too much!

SEBENZA!

Now that we got that out of the way, one knife that could be seen as the Sebenza rival is the Benchmade Anthem.

Ti integral, better steel (20CV), made in the US for a similar price point.

On the other hand - the Sebenza is a classic, time tested and proven design.

Tough choice (old vs. new).

ITS NOT FREE

Seriously, amazon, same thing.

u/TOUCHER_OF_SHEEP · 4 pointsr/knives

For cutting boxes, you're getting into medium use, not light use. For assisted, you're going to want a Kershaw at that price range- they're the kings of the budget assisted knife.

Some recommendations: Kershaw Clash, the Kershaw Burst, the Kershaw Drone, or the Kershaw Volt II. The Clash is going to be the strongest out of those options.

If you're willing to sacrifice speed (and the assisted open) for price, the Kershaw Kurai is only $12. If you'll also sacrifice the one handed opening, the Cold Steel Kudu is legitimately one of the very best knives on the market for under $15, and will only run you $8.50.

Feel free to respond with questions, comments or concerns. I'll try to get to them as soon as possible.

Its a pretty small knife, so it fits in jean pockets comfortably.
I really like it, and Ka-Bar makes a pretty decent quality knife. It is this one:
http://www.amazon.com/Ka-Bar-5699BP-ZK-Acheron-Skeleton-Knife/dp/B004NMZZ56

u/grozz · 4 pointsr/AskNYC

You can still carry, just keep in it a bag or a pocket(not clipped of course)

I currently carry this kiridashi and haven't had a problem. It totally fits what I was using my S.O.G. for (opening boxes and cleaning finger nails)

u/NhvK · 4 pointsr/knifeclub

To follow up a bit, the knife itself is essentially a Kershaw Lifter/1302. It's hefty, and sturdy with a normal tanto blade instead of the curved one on the lifter. Same framelock design, except there is a lanyard/cord opening at the bottom of the handle. The assist is a beast on this thing, and locks into place hard. I'm impressed for $11. The little flashlight is also bright as hell, and the multi-tool has a line/web cutter, screwdriver w/ jimping for grip, bottle opener, and what looks like a second attempt at a bottle opener (but with sharpening could easily double as a fish hook). My only gripe is the clip isn't reversible but this thing is so hefty I couldn't really see it as an EDC anyway. But def a good little hiking/bugout bag knife.

u/notnotTheBatman · 3 pointsr/EDC

The kershaw blur has a fairly thick blade. So does the SOG flash II Tanto

That's all I thought of off the top of my head.

u/MechaTrogdor · 3 pointsr/knives

This is the only real option imo. Fills all your requests except assisted, but it’s known for its greased lightning action. I wouldn’t fuck around with assisted opening at this price point (or any price point frankly.)

Just FYI, people get suspicious of long amazon links; they frequently get misidentified as referral links and people go nuts. Good practice to go for the short form: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00470B89Q

u/voraidicon · 3 pointsr/knives

The SOG Flash 1 is spring assisted. It is a kickass blade and extremely lightweight. Around $35.

Then there is the Benchmade Emissary 470. Just a brilliant, brilliant blade. Practically sexy. $160-ish though, so I'll never have one in my pocket.

I just did a huge amount of research and decided against the spring assist. I like the super fast deployment, a lot; however, I found that many knives deploy just as fast because they are made so damn well. I just picked up the Kershaw Skyline 1760 for $35 and it is awesome. Spring assists have more parts to break, and more parts mean higher manufacturing costs.

Notable mention, the Kershaw Chill for about $16 most places.

Sorry for the amazon links, they are just easy to find. Also, I am new to this game so wait for some constructive criticism from more experienced users about my recommendations. And finally check some youtube reviews, I trust nutnfancy's reviews all day.

u/K-Uno · 3 pointsr/knives

As already suggested an Opinel would be great. You can get it in carbon or stainless, has a nice handle and locking ring, slices and cuts better than 95% of what you'll find out there.

However I'd like to also recommend a couple:

CS Kudu - Big, decent steel, good locking mechanism, cheap.
http://www.amazon.com/Cold-Steel-Kudu-Folder-Knife/dp/B001S86S54/ref=sr_1_8?s=sporting-goods&ie=UTF8&qid=1344984729&sr=1-8&keywords=cold+steel+knife

However if I myself were to buy a knife at that price I'd get this:

http://www.amazon.com/Knives-French-Tickler-Lockback-Handles/dp/B006R1UP2Y/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1344984157&sr=8-1&keywords=rough+rider+knife+french

Its not the best slicer, its got a fairly thick blade. The steel and HT on it are on par with a swiss army knife or a knife from Case. I however just like the looks of it, and the way it feels in my hand. Makes me regret giving mine away, and in fact I'm buying another one right after this post lol

(Great quality/price ratio from Sweden)

For EDC/general cutting purposes(and gorgeous old-school looks), a small high-quality folding knife from France:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B004AMY6GS/ref=mp_s_a_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1485034837&sr=8-2&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_FMwebp_QL65&keywords=opinel+carbon&dpPl=1&dpID=51baQV0eVVL&ref=plSrch

If you want a more "modern" pocket knife that is still affordable, I recommend something from the American masters of Cold Steel like:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00U1I875Q/ref=cm_cr_arp_mb_bdcrb_top?ie=UTF8
(Gotta give some lovin' to that Aus8A japanese steel and the Scandinavian grind)

I can recommend all three, though I own only the first 2. Have fun and stay sharp!

There are a couple smaller ones as well; Bug SS, HoneyBee SS, etc. I've had one for about a year now, its a good knife.

I’m in NYC so the Shun and the Mercator are a little dangerous to carry, even though they’re technically legal.

  • Water bottle: Klean Kanteen 64 ounce stainless steel - $30
  • Phone: I might buy a cheap MetroPCS phone w/ $25 plan
  • Wallet: Alpine Swiss - $12
  • Watches: I'd be happy with a black and brown Timex Easy Reader - $25 each. Fossil would be my next level, but what are some some even better watches?
  • Flashlight: This is hard because I love my light but it's discontinued. It would have to be a single AAA light with a reversible pocket clip. Maybe a Lenser P2 - $17
  • Protection: Condom case - $5 and Skyn condoms - $17
  • Protection: Glock 19 - $550 and Galco King Tuk - $60
  • More protection: Milt Sparks pocket magazine carrier - $63
  • Belts: Black and Brown Hanks Amish Belts - $36 each. Maybe I'd shop around, but they have been working for me.

    Keys:

  • Leatherman carabiner + bottle opener - $10
  • SOG keyknife - $11
  • Uncle Bill's tweezers - $10 for 2
  • A pill holder from Winn-Dixie... - ~$5
  • Reusable earplugs - $13

I'm not sure if I want to carry a full-sized knife anymore but I think the Boker Plus Nano ($43) looks cool!

That's just about my current EDC. I'm planning on eventually buying the carabiner, key knife, tweezers, and I'll probably go with a desantis pocket mag carrier opposed to the 3x more expensive Milt Sparks.

See, it's posts like these that validate the people who are constantly being harassed for carrying two knives.

Even if I lost my main pocket knife, I'd have a....few...spares on me. Even if I lost all of them, I'd have a....few...backups at home to replace it before the next day's sun rose.

I hope you find your blade, OP. Get yourself something cheaper in the mean time. Sanrenmu makes a clone of this knife, for even cheaper than what a Cryo actually runs. They also make other fun clones!

Quality tools cost a bit more. It will last longer, and give you better service.

Spyderco makes several good EDC choices IMHO. Look at a Tenacious or a Delica to start.

SOG also makes quality knives. I'm partial to the Flash II Tanto, but it comes in several blade styles.

Either way, make sure you get a good sharpening system and learn to keep your knife sharp.

A sharp knife is a safe knife

u/hot_n_stinky_dreams · 1 pointr/BudgetBlades

Yes, carbon usually has a much more significant edge stability. However, since you're not using it often, carbon represents quite a bit of maintenance (it will rust). Even with oil, if it's in long term storage, it tends to get small spots of rust that need to be polished off. If you use it frequently, rust usually isn't a huge issue. Long-term storage is where the rust really becomes a problem. Snow could present more issues with rust, but I haven't had to deal with that in my climate setting.

If you have a honing rod, that should fix a rolled edge better than a pull-through sharpener. But a knife is no knife at all without a properly sharpened edge.

Since it seems like you're not doing heavy woodwork...maybe a folder would be best for you.

For minimal maintenance, good edge retention, and as long as you're not doing heavy wood work, try the BRK Avispa or Zancudo (links go to Amazon). Alternatively the OKC RAT and RAT II are essentially the same knives but with different styling. I believe these are all in AUS-8 Stainless Steel and have pretty hard edges. The edge should last a while with no sharpening (use your honing rod, though). The Avispa and RAT 1 are both quite large--I think the blades are about 4 inches long. The Zancudo and RAT II have ~2.5 inch blades and are much better suited for every day carry.

Opinels are great for culinary applications, but I don't personally like them for woodworking. Great for spreading cheese, and cutting summer sausages though! I also don't entirely trust the locking mechanism. But they are super cool knives. The stainless loses its edge very quickly to rolling.

Do you mind me asking: what is your version of 'flashy'?

Edit: I forgot to add, my condolences on your EDC. I hope the thief gets their karmic rewards.

Hey, whistles are good to have for emergencies. If there's anybody in whistle shot it's a good deterrent to thieves and muggers of all sort, and is great if you're trapped by or lost during a disaster.

The Boker Subcom and the Kershaw Scallion have been among my noteworthy EDC knives.
The Boker Subcom is great because as a short and fat knife it's far too ridiculous for the knife averse general culture of the city to raise the hue and cry, and yet it has excellent ergonomics and is very small.
The Kershaw Ken Onion (chive, scallion, leek) knives all have an assisted open that can be illegal depending on your country/state/municipality laws. But it's a really solid knife, feels great in my hand, and I like the blade profile.

The Baladéo knives are really attractive and ultra light weight, but I've seen complaints about the frame twisting and the lock giving out even under moderate use.

I don't buy a lot of knives, so little advice on where to buy. I bought the Boker from the EDC forum store. The prices for knives seems comparable or better than Amazon (pre-shipping).

For price, well, you can obviously get a quite serviceable knife for 25-40$, but I've heard a lot of people say they feel like they got what they paid for in a more expensive knife.

Aside from Boker and Kershaw, I see Spyderco and Benchmade mentioned often for knife EDC. (Spyderco makes a keychain knife called the ladybug that half-way to ubiquitous on EDCf's keychain board.)

As for out of the ordinary... I'd have to go with my sliver grippers, and maybe my camping mirror (I've had both the acrylic and the stainless steel, acrylic will eventually crack, steel scratches like crazy, though you can re-polish). Oh, and my Gerber Shard (there are better one-piece keychain tools out there, but you can't beat that price).

There was a great thread a little bit ago with a lot of great advice for starting an EDC. Gave me one or two ideas and recommendations.

super thin folder? I don't think you'll find anything that beats the baladeo 22G (they make a 34G and 16G as well, same knives just different size), I have one and its a good little knife, good quality for the price point. I haven't had issues with the frame lock or cutting myself with the closed blade like some of the reviews say. I have a kiss assist as well and if you don't have issues cutting yourself with that one, you won't with the baladeo. Definitely a light duty knife though due to how thin it is

Most of the stuff on here is less than $10 I was actually surprised at what you could find for under that amount perhaps you wish to watch James Bond or perhaps you need a new knife you could get this or a book you might get this or even need to listen to The Rolling Stones

These knives are a Buck Whittaker 437T Revolution at the top, and a Kershaw Chill. Recently I have expanded my collection of Kershaw knives. I have the Brawler and the [Lifter] (https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00ILFLBYK/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1523470233&sr=8-1&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_FMwebp_QL65&keywords=kershaw+lifter+knife) as well. I think they are a great value for the comparatively low price point. They come very sharp, don't have frills, and they just work.

A couple months ago I hit gold in my search to reacquire a knife I lost as a kid. My Buck Whittaker 437T fetish was finally acted upon, and I found two on Ebay. Well, I was searching for something else, and I found another one! This one is black. So, now I have three - blue, black, and green. My search for more is always ongoing, but I'm not seeking them out any longer. All three of them have been disassembled, oiled, cleaned, and sharpened. They are in tip top working order.

Thanks for looking.

and then wrapping paracord around it. they're not izulas, but they sure look nice. Wha do you think?

This is the amazon page for the one I got, but it looks like it's not available anymore, and I'm not seeing any others in exactly the same style. I'd just suggest browsing the related items for one you like.

> Swiss Army knives are expensive

I would hardly call £15.50 expensive.
