Exactly. Cherry pie filling is mostly sweet thickened syrup. Canned cherries are literally cherries.

Edited to add it's like comparing canned tomatoes with tomato sauce. They may have an ingredient in common, but they're totally different things.

I've made Khao Soi (northern thai coconut curry soup) with Ramen noodles. It was one of the best trail meals I've made

you'll need:

1 package of ramen noodles, throw away the seasoning

1 package of Khao soi seasoning https://www.amazon.com/Lobo-Brand-Thai-Kao-Seasoning/dp/B000ESIDBQ

1 package of coconut milk/cream powder https://www.amazon.com/Coconut-Cream-Powder-Chao-Thai/dp/B0095VQH5M/

1 package of chicken https://www.amazon.com/Chicken-Breast-Protein-Snacks-Pouches/dp/B0025ULWVE/

freeze dried shallots and cilanto (Litehouse brand)

chili flakes

crushed peanuts

dehydrated lime juice (optional) https://www.amazon.com/True-Citrus-Lime-Shaker-2pk/dp/B01F2PKK8E/

To make:

Crumble a few noodles and reserve, cook the rest in boiling water, pour off a bit of the water and add the chicken, when warm, mix in the Khoi soi seasoning and coconut milk/cream powder, stir to combine. Add freeze dried shallots and cilanto and let them rehydrate, top with crumbled noodle bits, chili flakes to taste and some crushed peanuts, add a touch of dehydrated lime juice. Enjoy.

Actually, a couple of the night I had sweet sue chicken breasts, it's basically a tuna pack but with chicken. I thought it was delicious. But there are plenty of spots on the trail (Yosemite, VVR, MTR, Red's, Tuolumne Meadows, other sidetrails) where you can get a 'real' meal. It'll cost an arm and a leg, but worth it.

u/albino-rhino · 9 pointsr/AskCulinary

I would recommend something like amarena cherries, or luxardo cherries.

If you do fresh cherries they'll release a ton of liquid and sink. No good. Maraschino cherries are, well, not my favorite.

I would get either of the above, and I would drain them a little and if I felt like it, add some of that liquor to the souffle batter. Then I would chop or add whole as described above.

Good luck and hope it works well!

u/DJPho3nix · 8 pointsr/Cooking

Is that the volcano chicken one? I like that one. I tried it because I was standing in the ramen aisle in my H-Mart debating on what to buy and a family walked into the aisle. They were looking specifically for that one, and I figured if they were looking for a specific one, it must be decent.

EDIT: I looked it up. The one I had was from Paldo, not Samyang. Is the Samyang one hotter?

u/vermilionweirdo · 8 pointsr/running

Better yet, squirting it onto a cracker and eating it. Like Easy Cheese.

u/ViteKitchensTim · 6 pointsr/ramen

Alright! I'm going to list a bunch of different types, so bear with me here--

If you're looking for a more classic, almost like Top Ramen kind of tastes, I recommend these: Sapporo Ichiban

They're basically just tastier Top Ramen, in my opinon. If you want to fancy it up a bit and go a little deeper into "classic" ramen tastes, then go with this: Nissin Black Garlic Oil Tonkotsu

Speaking of Tonkotsu, do you like a richer Tonkotsu flavor? Then this is what you'll want to try! Myojo Charumera Ramen Tokotsu Shoyu

A bit too high calorie? Want something lighter, non-fried, but still has some delicious Tonkotosu flavor and a firmer chew? Then try Nissin Raoh!

It also comes in the Soy Sauce and Miso flavors, or even Shio if you're looking for that!

Japanese not your thing? Want to try some Korean Ramyun? Neoguri Spicy Seafood might be your thing!

But like some szechuan spice with some authentic ma la flavor that numbs your mouth? Why not try our JML Instant Noodle Artificial Spicy Hot Beef Flavor?
P.S. The "artifical" is a bad translation of the ma la flavor

What about some southeast asian flavors? Nothing like Mama Tom Yum flavor to brighten up your day! These are smaller packet, just something to keep in mind. They also make Shrimp creamy Tom Yum and Artifical Pa-Lo Duck Flavor if you're into that!

Speaking of which, let's get some Laksa and Penang in here! MyKuali Penang White Curry is a very delicious, but kind of shrimp funky kind of flavor, but it's definitely worth a try! The entire MyKuali line is very good!

What about something a bit more on the more luxurious side, but also has that same fermented shrimp funk? Why not Prima Taste Laksa La Mian with coconut broth?

And if we want to go into the more expensive, more authentic ramen taste, there's Ichiran instant ramen, which is expensive, but pretty close to an actual authentic bowl of Ichiran Tonkotsu Ramen!

I hope this helped, and let me know if there's anything else you'd like to try, and I can give recommendations! I also recommend going to a local asian supermarket and browsing their instant ramen section-- Amazon only carries the more popular ones, and there are truly some delicious hidden gems that you can only get in asian grocery stores!

My local low carb grocer’s website has canned black soy beans that people who review it say make a great substitute for regular beans in chilli. They’ve been out of stock when I’ve been there (it’s a bit out of my way), but I plan to grab a couple and see how they go for Mexican dishes and chilli.

https://www.thelowcarbgrocery.com/catalog/eden-organic-black-soy-beans-low-carb-high-fibre-g-474.html - nutrition and ingredients easy to find here.

Eden Soybeans Black 15.0 OZ(pack of 3) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00EQW3EUQ/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_3-BrDbYS4GBRM - easy enough to order off Amazon in America.

3.25lbs of mashed potatoes :D

u/applesforadam · 5 pointsr/Frugal

If you really wanted to be frugal and give yourself a bit of an ascetic test you could buy a large bag of rice and a multivitamin. You would be fine for the month, and just think how good that first real meal would be when the month is over. Plus, you'd save a lot of that card for other things. If you wanted to make it less harsh, you could buy a few splurge foods like:

Spaghetti-O's (you could actually just buy these and be fine for the month too, 5 cans a day = $5 x 30 days = $150)

Mountain House dehydrated meals

Mac and Cheese

Any number of other things, really. The rice is an absolute frugal grocery staple. Beyond that, go to Amazon and search the listings under Grocery>Packaged Meals & Side Dishes. Just don't forget a multivitamin.

Amarena Cherries are also commonly used in cocktails though can be found in all sorts of cooking recipes. Personally, I prefer Amarena to Luxardo's. Fabbri is generally what you find behind most bars that use Amarena Cherries. The jar itself is reusable and much more attractive to have on display if that's your thing.

u/oceanrainfairy · 3 pointsr/vegetarian

Unfortunately, Maruchan's oriental flavor has beef in it. https://www.amazon.com/Maruchan-Flavor-Ramen-Noodles-Oriental/dp/B00CEIECZ0?th=1 as does their chili flavor https://www.amazon.com/Maruchan-Ramen-Chili-3-Ounce-Packages/dp/B003OB2DSE it's near the end of the ingredients list.

u/jarijasm · 3 pointsr/ramen

I made a trip to my local asian supermarket and picked up a few different kinds of instant ramen to try. I was looking for this one to try as well, but they didn't have any at this particular supermarket. I have another asian supermarket nearby that has a bigger variety of instant ramen and I plan on going there in the next few weeks. I would love to try other brands not pictured here, so let me know your favorite instant ramen that you think I should try. If possible link some pictures so I know what to look for at the store. The ramen pictured here are:

Mama Tom Yum

indomie

samyang spicy chicken

samyang 2x spicy I tried this one and it is way too spicy for me, the flavor was delicious though

saporo ichiban miso this is one of my favorite instant ramen, I buy it all the time, it's so good

shin ramyun spicy This is my favorite instant ramen. This was the first instant ramen I tried that wasn't maruchan and I fell in love. This led me to try other brands from the asian store that I wouldn't normally have tried.

*edit: i just tried the indomie and wow, it was delicious, so flavorful, definitely getting some more of those

I got Native Forest brand organic canned jackfruit in water (well it has salt and lime juice too) from Whole Foods. Here's a link to it. I thought maybe I hadn't dries it enough, although I squeezed it pretty dry, or maybe that I could crisp it by frying it before adding the sauce? What do you think? I'm new to jack fruit so any advice would be great!

u/Pendragn · 2 pointsr/pics

They carry it at all the grocery stores around here, right next to the Kraft. Also Annie's at Amazon.

u/youwantmetoeatawhat · 2 pointsr/budgetfood

Ichiban, as the name states is the best in terms of quality. I buy maruchan because it is 15-20 cents a square, the cats eat more per meal than I. Any long noodle will do , but you may want to make your own noodles.

Fear cuts deeper than swords!

Grey Tribble!

Reminiscent of rain. If you turned a sound machine on and set it to "spring rain" and put this on you'd think your face was actually being caressed by gentle cooling drops of relaxing rain. :)

Weird food Haggis flavored chips. What? I love tasting new stuff. This intrigued me. :)

For my mom She loves horses. I once gave her an ornament with a horse on it that meant a lot to her. It's become sort of a tradition to get her an ornament as part of Christmas. This one is soo pretty. :)

Book! If you've watched the show I don't have to sell this too hard. :) I LOVE this show and really really want to read this book!

Less than $1. Technically... Digital delivery is a delivery method. It's not a food, polish, or anything to do with my hair. ;)

Cat related!

This key does nothing useful, but it looks awesome!

Across The Universe (movie). I had a friend who had the soundtrack. We listened to it pretty often. It's worth a watch just for the music alone, but it's a great watch. :)

Useful for zombies? Maybe? It's a knife that fits in your wallet like a credit card. It's at least a weapon that you could always have on you so you're ready at a moments notice. :) If only they made a credit card size folding flame thrower. ;)

Life changing. I need to be less fat... :/ This would definitely help.

Add on. My hedgehog loves these!

This is my second most expensive. My most expensive was the one for not being fat... lol. Before I used a wishlist I just added stuff to my cart and then saved it for later. This is the oldest item I've had stashed away. Every camping trip or competitive horse ride I went on with my mom/parents always involved sitting around the fire talking before heading off to bed. Whenever I get the chance to see them (we live in different states now) we still sit around a fire. This just reminds me of good times spent with family and essentially being home...

Bigger than a breadbox. For side table fishy times! :D

Smaller than a golfball. I'm obsessed with stars. I really love this ring. :)

Good smell! I bought the lotion and body spray on a whim when I was at the mall a while back. This stuff smells sooo good. It's like summer time!

Safe for work toy. These things look really neat. I saw them mentioned somewhere else and googled to see what they were. The video makes them look pretty cool. :)

I'm always late for class, but if I had a watch that I couldn't stop looking at I might just make it on time. ;)

Speaking of "can't stop looking at"... I'm obsessed with Doctor Who and David Tennant. :D

I added this to show someone else... I think it's crazy that they even make these. There's an appliance for everything! What beats fresh donuts anytime you want them? NOTHING! That's what... This is why I need that elliptical.. :P

Pm'd what I think is your name! :D

Oregon Cherries!

3.) Something food related that is unusual.

Coffee chocolate Not that weird... but pretty amazing.

4.) Something on your list that is for someone other than yourself. Tell me who it's for and why. (Yes, pets count!)
Bones for my dog because he hates being alone!

meow.

8.) Something that is not useful, but so beautiful you must have it.

I don't think any nail polish is useful, but I love this color

9.) A movie everyone should watch at least once in their life. Why?

Shawshank Redemption Come on, it's amazing. And sad. And Stephen King.

10.) Something that would be useful when the zombies attack. Explain.

These would be particularly useful because I could keep my hair out of my face so I can see zombies better to kill them!

11.) Something that would have a profound impact on your life and help you to achieve your current goals.

12.) One of those pesky Add-On items.
Apparently you can straighten your nose with this interesting little item Ohhhh, China.

13.) The most expensive thing on your list. Your dream item. Why?

This book is the most expensive item on my list. Dream item? Nah. A kindle would be my dream item, but not feasible to have on list right now.

14.) Something bigger than a bread box.

This big enough?

15.) Something smaller than a golf ball.

This ring is itty bitty!

16.) Something that smells wonderful.

This air freshener. Mmmm

17.) A (SFW) toy.

Amazon lists this as a toy, so I'm going to have to go with that!

18.) Something that would be helpful for going back to school.

These would be great to hang papers and reminders up on the fridge.

19.) Something related to your current obsession, whatever that may be.

I'm obsessed with books, so uh... most of my wish list. Or this bookmark that symbolizes all that is books.

20.) Something that is just so amazing and awe-inspiring that I simply must see it. Explain why it is so grand.

I'm sure you've seen this but come on! It's John Snuhhhh!

Bonus! Oregon Fruit

Ever tried the Sapporo Ichiban ramen? It is amazing.

I like Amarena Cherries but they aren't (much?) cheaper.

You could beg the company help you out: [email protected]
It is also my favourite, but in crises - I turn to the swedish producer ABBA and their "Kalles kaviar". And lucky you - they are on sale on Amazone: http://www.amazon.com/Kalles-Kaviar-cod-roe-6-pack/dp/B00CB8IIGM/ref=sr_1_1?s=grocery&ie=UTF8&qid=1412243341&sr=1-1&keywords=mills+kaviar

Dad was a depression era kid raised by a sharecropper. To escape poverty and contribute to the war effort, he joined the Navy in WWII and went to college after he got home to become a petroleum engineer. That meant we grew up eating potted meat, vienna sausage, and SPAM.

u/avree · 2 pointsr/slowcooking

I just Googled it and the 'cheese sauce' is pretty much exactly what I said is in it, whey, flavorings, and artificial color.

https://www.amazon.com/Kraft-Macaroni-Cheese-Dinner-Original/dp/B00I8GGY9O/ref=sr_1_1_a_it?ie=UTF8&qid=1468384407&sr=8-1&keywords=kraft+mac+and+cheese

u/freechowmein · 2 pointsr/Diepio

You don't have to go that far just for some SPAM...

You can just buy it online on Amazon here. Usually the local grocery store or something will sell the cans as well though.

I used the NY-style dough recipe (with a starter) from the Pizza Bible. I'm using All Trumps High Gluten flour that I let proof for six days in the fridge in a covered dough tray then I let it sit out to hit room temperature before stretching it. I'm trying to stretch it to be as large as possible on my rectangular pizza stones.

I make my starter on Monday then make the dough on Tuesday with that starter to make pizza on the weekend.

The sauce is my own mix:
7/11 tomato sauce, minced garlic, sea salt, basil, and oregano.

Cheese is a 50/50 mix of low moisture mozzarella and full-fat fresh mozzarella with a few pinches of fresh parmesan after cooking before slicing.

Shin Ramyun is a solid A- at all times. Its a nice staple, good spice packet, good dried veggie packet (shiitake is always welcome). Some people will call bullshit, but I actually like Shin Ramyun black.

Mama's Tom yum flavor is awesome. just awesome. kind of tiny, but also cheap.

Same with Indomie hot and Spicy flavor.

Sapporo Ichiban is again a nice staple. I'd say solid B unless you really like one of the flavors. Wife REALLY likes the tonkutsu, but its artificially flavored, and the only one of the basic flavors that has that on the label. I don't know why.

I also enjoy the Myojo Udon you see there with a lot of scallions and white pepper added to the mix. Obey the instructions on this one: boil noodles separately from a pot of just water. use the hot water on the flavor pack (and white pepper to taste, probably a lot), drain noodles and put in stock, add scallions and whatever else. maybe do a soy egg or something. I like beef or spicy flavors on this one.

These Volcano Ramen are right up there with Samyung. The heat is a slower build, but when it hits it packs a wallop.

Hi - I'm in a similar situation. My mother gets Meals on Wheels, but they don't deliver on weekends or holidays, and some of the meals she just doesn't like. So I'm constantly trying to find things she'll bother to get out and eat when she's on her own. She's actually lost some weight and it's hard to make sure she's getting enough calories in.

Does your mom have access to a fridge and freezer, or does everything have to be shelf stable?

Here are some thoughts off the top of my head:

Bumble Bee Tuna Salad with Crackers. It even comes with a little plastic spreader inside the box. My mother uses 1 or 2 each week. At our regular market they only have the tuna, but I've seen the chicken salad and ham salad at Walmart, and they're ok too.

Bottles of Ensure. They come in different flavors and nutritional profiles (high protein, light, plus). My mother will drink the chocolate Plus version. At least it's balanced nutrition, if not a hot meal.

Uncrustables PB&J frozen sandwiches. They just need to be thawed. Or, peanut butter crackers like from Lance? My mom got to the point where she wouldn't bother opening the jar of peanut butter and spreading it. One step, self-contained things seem to be working the best. There are some ideas for other types of sandwiches that freeze well if you want to do it yourself, here.

A healthy cold cereal with milk? Instant oatmeal packets that only need hot water added to them? Meal replacement or protein bars?

Cup-A-Soup packets labeled Lipton or Knorr that only need hot water added, unlike some other dried soup cups that require a microwave. You have to watch the sodium content though. The Spring Vegetable flavor is the lowest sodium one I've found.

Packets of instant hot cocoa that only need hot water. Or single serve pudding cups, either shelf stable or refrigerated like Kozy Shack. Yogurt cups, cottage cheese. Not really a meal, but easy and these all have some protein from dairy.

My mother likes snacking on honey roasted peanuts, again, some protein and calories there.

I try to bring slices of pumpkin pie every so often because she likes it, but also there's nutrition from the pumpkin and eggs. If her main meal of the day turns out to be two slices of pie, I figure it's not the worst thing in the world.

I don't know much about the backpacking foods, except I looked into them when I was trying to put an emergency pantry together at my own house. It looked like most of them were really high in sodium, so you might want to make sure that's not a concern for her.

There are single-serving packages of fruit/cheese/crackers, carrot/celery sticks/peanut butter, etc. at supermarkets and convenience stores, and prepackaged sandwiches and salads, which would be healthy but not really cheap. Sometimes I pick up a few things like that for my mom at Wawa, for example when a snowstorm is coming and I don't know whether the Meals on Wheels guy will be able to make it over.

Good luck. This memory/dementia stuff is a bear, isn't it?

This is the stuff I was talking about https://www.amazon.com/Volcano-Spicy-Chicken-Noodle-Pack/dp/B075ZRJDK4

Looks similar but I can't read it.

I'm buying a box of that stuff this evening!

your move.

I would either dehydrate or buy something prepackaged like: https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B0025ULWVE/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_1q4UCb311H5Q1

Damn you’re right! I’m so used to it from my childhood I didn’t realize the name had changed.

edit: just found it on amazon still as oriental

u/Hostofdreams · 1 pointr/Food_Pantry

Holy crap, are you serious? 50 dollars is a lot of money. That's loads of food.

I'd say I could make these last a long time:

The 52 count oatmeal
http://amzn.com/B000O9WEY2

The 15 pack of kraft mac and cheese
http://amzn.com/B0019RLJV2

The 12 pack of Big Beef Ravioli
http://amzn.com/B003XUJ3RK

Those would last me a good long time. Especially the oatmeal. I can make that last for ages. I'll leave it up to your discretion though as well. I've had mac and cheese with just water and it's really not the worst thing in the world. Certainly better than nothing! Thank you so, so much!

12 boxes of Annie's
at $1.70 per box ($1.44 with subscribe and save)

24 boxes of Annie's
at $1.50 per box ($1.27 with subscribe and save)

of course Kraft is cheaper at $1.22 a box (for a slightly large box too)

Never even have to go to the store. They have crazy different varieties on there too.

Well, if you're talking about recently - they've been hard to find because of some bad crop years out of Michigan, where 75% of the tart cherries in the US are produced. Harsh winters and early false springs have killed the blossoms and hurt the crop. 2012 was the worst crop in Michigan recorded history, apparently.

I have found frozen tart cherries at Costco in the last 6 months, I believe they were a Morello variety because they were dark colored. I've also found them in my local grocery store - but both times they were labeled organic fruit, so maybe your grocery stores are putting them in a different section? You can also get preserved Morellos in a jar from Trader Joe's - they've got a little bit of a different texture than frozen, but they'll do in a pinch. I've also heard fairly good reviews of the Oregon Fruit brand canned tart cherries in water, which you can get off amazon.

As a last resort, a lot of farms will overnight ship flash frozen tart cherries, if you're willing to pay the premium.

This is probably more tart cherry information than you ever wanted to know :)

Okay friend so this right [here ](http://www.NongShim.com/ Shin Ramyun Noodle Soup, Gourmet Spicy, 4.2 Ounce (Pack of 20) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00778B90S/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_FikMAbEZMZQNA)is my favorite ramen but I don't know how much spicy food you have in Norway (I'm from Southwest USA so spicy is my go to and this is spicy) so if you want something quality but not too spicy I found that [this one is really good](http://www.Maruchan.com/ Yakisoba Teriyaki Beef , 4.00 Oz., Pack of 8 https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0025UOMZM/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_3kkMAbDG7SNXZ) and [this one](http://www.Sapporo.com/ Ichiban Noodle Instant Bag, Original, 3.5 Ounce (Pack of 24) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B004AH778M/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_nmkMAbASTY94S) is a favorite of mine too!

I’m pretty sure I got mine at Rouse’s (local grocery chain), but you should be able to find them anywhere other than Walmart. If not, check Amazon.
