Here you go:

You need to look at "ceiling fan remote control kit". These are kits that go into the fan housing itself, and control the speed; you leave it on all the time at the wall switch and have the chain speed set to max.

For example (just picked at random from Amazon, so I don't know if this is a good model): https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07TRTG8PS/

There's this and this if you're looking at putting them to good use.

came here to say the same thing. I have two of these installed in my house. I did however wire it a little bit different than the way it was stated in the manual. I wired the light directly to the 6 button dimmer and then linked the 4 middle buttons to off/low/med/high with the fanlinc

another option i considered but didnt actually pursue is the Aeotec micro dimmer that could be paired with a their wall swipe switch whenever it comes out.

I solved this exact problem recently. Sadly my solution wasn't cheap, but it works really nicely (better than I expected tbh).

My needs:

  • Ceiling light with dimmer
  • Fan, adjustable
  • Switch on wall to control dimmer, fan speeds and lights on/off
  • Alexa integration
  • Zero delay between using the wall switch and the fan reacting

I couldn't find anything that used zeewave / zigbee, so I set up a parallel Insteon system. It was expensive, but it's way better than I had hoped. It's all immediate, the buttons have a nicer feel, aesthetics are nice etc. Hardware required was:

  • https://www.insteon.com/ceiling-fan-controller (~$80)
  • https://www.smarthome.com/insteon-2245-222-hub.html (~$80)
  • https://www.smarthome.com/2334-232-alt (~$80)
  • Nicer keypad buttons - https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B007S0CAMQ ($10)

Discounts can be found on all of those, perhaps ebay etc, ymmv.

If you go this route then here's some tips that I wish someone told me:

  • The insteon keypad scene buttons default to being in toggle mode - you need to change this to always on (or always off, doesn't actually matter)
  • The hot wire in the wall is connected to the keypad *and* the wire up to the fan controller (i.e. not in serial). The load of the keypad is just capped off. This means that the fan controller and the switch are always on. If you end up here please DM me to clarify if that doesn't make sense.

I'd love to hear your solution once you figure it out - hopefully you can beat me on price.

If you are willing to get a Bond fan controller and assuming you either have a wireless controller for your fans or are comfortable installing one, you can set up an IFTTT rule to turn the fan on or off at a specific time.

If I may rant for a second, the integration in home automation is an absolute disaster these days. I freakin hate it. Nothing works together. Everybody wants their service online (you don't mind paying $2.00 a month do you, it's only $2.00 a month). So frustrating.

I think you are kind of stuck with the Insteon solution. I have seen some solutions where you can add a remote to a ceiling fan, something like this (not an endorsement of this product, just the first one on amazon) https://www.amazon.com/Eogifee-Universal-Replacement-KUJCE9103-2AAZPFAN-53T/dp/B07H72HJ87/ref=sxin_2_ac_d_pm?ac_md=2-1-QmV0d2VlbiAkMjUgYW5kICQ1MA%3D%3D&crid=3242GZXAQSBNO&keywords=ceiling+fan+remote+control+kit&pd_rd_i=B07H72HJ87&pd_rd_r=5cb350f4-3771-4410-8df3-9a10c2addf86&pd_rd_w=dWLZf&pd_rd_wg=VeXxd&pf_rd_p=be5d8dec-444e-4770-91df-1e16a8c46da8&pf_rd_r=Q2Q1KAWB3VNK7BPWGF9Q&qid=1564488780&s=gateway&sprefix=ceiling+fan+remote+%2Caps%2C258

which would end up being cheaper with the bond than the Insteon, but still not ideal of course.

I too don't have a good zwave integration. It's something i'd like to get going, really because I want a front door lock that I can access remotely, but then do I want to set that up. What i'd really like is something that opens the door and boots the cat outside, but that doesn't seem to be a thing. lol.

Lutron and Insteon each have their own hub they connect to with ah proprietary protocol, making them very reliable, but frustrating bat the same time because it's yet another hub you need.

Here's a Honeywell Z wave plus for $37, probably among the cheapest "name brand" switches.

That's not nearly as bad as the wobble in my brother's fan growing up, and it lasted for over a decade before my parents replaced it as part of general upkeep.

First things first: make sure all the screws are tight, this includes both the screws holding the blades to the fan as well as the screws holding the motor to the downrod. That might just fix the problem all on it's own.

If it doesn't, do you have a kitchen scale? Take the blades down and weigh them - a normal "for people" scale probably isn't sensitive enough, but they shouldn't weigh too much for a kitchen scale. Label them by writing a number on them in magic marker -- on the top side! It's very easy to lose track of which blade is which. Since you have them down, also try and figure out the center of mass for each blade. Put a pen on the table/floor and try to balance the blades on them. Mark the center of mass.

Then try to figure out how to lay them out so that the weight on opposite sides of the fan is balanced as much as you can. Ideally you try to balance not just weight, but also mirror center of mass. That should probably help the wobble significantly. If there's still more wobble than you'd like, you can get fan weights - basically little bits of dense rubber with high strength adhesive tape on them. You use the little clippy bits of rubber to test out various positioning on various blades and when you're happy with it, just stick the weight to the top of the blade.

This is how you adjust the center of mass of the blades, but in doing so you also change the weight balance. It's a very annoying process of trial and error to minimize the wobble.

Yes! Thanks! I really appreciate that, you just saved me $40. I'll buy the Bundle to start and assuming it works out nicely I'll add in the extra switch afterwards. (And I see that if I later want those pedestals, I can get them for less than $10 each. Sweet!) Thanks again.

Actually, /u/PerestroikaPal has never seen one of these. It is called the Westinghouse FanMaster ceiling box, and the big one is rated for a 70 pound fan:

https://www.amazon.com/Westinghouse-0200011-Support-2-Cubic-Inch-Capacity/dp/B0002YV1Q6

Trust me on this. It works, and it works well. Mount your fan and make the connections. You'll be fine.

u/Notevenspecial · 2 pointsr/HomeImprovement

There is actually a weird looking box that will work in that space:

https://www.amazon.com/Westinghouse-0200011-Support-2-Cubic-Inch-Capacity/dp/B0002YV1Q6

It is designed for ceiling fans, but would work there as well.

Try these. the fan one spins too.

I have 3 of these. Have been using for over 3yrs with no issues. They also have a temp sensor so if set you can have them go on and off at a certain temp. My daughters room gets hot in the summer so turns on in the day and off in the late evenings.

Return them or cancel them;m! I bought many warehouse deals and they are hit and miss. They say inspected; I say BS! I had one with missing rocker plate (supposed to be a white and light almond; only white came! Also had one where they sent me a dimmer instead of the fan switch but the box had the right fan switch label on it! Dimmers can burn out your fan motor! I finally figured it out because I read the model on the back of the GE switch; was different than what I ordered! One was completely fried and it took me an hour to troubleshoot and realize it (after calling Leviton)! Never again for smart switches. Just saw some on sale; check to make sure it’s what you need but either way; stay away from the “whorehouse”, no it’s NOT a TYPO!!! These are NOT 3 way so if that what you are looking for you need the HS210 if I recall correctly! I believe this is the one I got for my dumb 2 wire fan.

https://www.amazon.com/Enabled-Universal-Ceiling-Premier-Control/dp/B077ZHDLY3/

it's zigbee, so whatever works with that should be fine. I use it in homeassistant.

I also bought the wall control, so I control it at the wall switch as well as a remote control by the bed.

works nice enough. fan speed and light dim all controllable through automations or alexa.

u/Scottolan · 1 pointr/HomeImprovement

I got a remote fan controller from Amazon. It controls fan and light from a single remote (except we only have a fan). We just leave the switch in the on position and use the remote to control the fan. Not sure what happens if we turn it off and back on by the switch. I am using this switch (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07465Y2SL/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&th=1) but the design is terrible. Functionally it controls the Light and the Fan separately and I can use Alexa to turn them on or off (I created a Group for each separate switch).

The issue is the design of the box. The clips kewep popping off and it will not stay flush to the wall and looks terrible.

I have written to other companies, begging that they create WiFi version of their existing switches.
