Merci.
A bike computer.

I actually think the Cateye at about $40 is the best. Durable, wireless and easy to use. See: http://www.amazon.com/Cateye-CC-VL510-5-Function-Bicycle-Computer/dp/B000R5NRDK/ref=pd_sim_sg_5
BTW, not a computer-freak, but it is nice to check your speed on occasion, know how far you went, and know what time it is. The rest is fitness-fetish stuff for those training for races, competition, or other goals that are inexplicable to me.
Add this simple Bluetooth sensor for cadence
https://www.amazon.com/TAOPE-Bluetooth-Cadence-Waterproof-Computers/dp/B01IJ9CP4M/ref=mp_s_a_1_2_sspa?keywords=cadence+sensor&qid=1556028310&s=gateway&sr=8-2-spons&psc=1
It will sync to the Peloton Digital app and display cadence on the screen.
For HR just start an "indoor cycling" workout within the standard apple fitness app.
My wife and I have been using this DIY style setup for a couple months now and while it is not the "full" experience I still see my HR go up, burn calories and leave the bike drenched!
I think catseye makes a bunch of different kinds that are all pretty solid.
I mean I went in and got literally the cheapest one they make and it's lasted probably 2 years so far. Despite, like, when I do maintainence on the bike I just turn it upsides down so it's just resting on the handlebars and seat because I don't own a bike stand; so the catseye ends up holding a lot of weight and getting pretty scratched up.
I'm not recommending you do that but to answer your question here's a good one for about $25 http://www.amazon.com/Cateye-CC-VL510-5-Function-Bicycle-Computer/dp/B000R5NRDK/ref=sr_1_8?ie=UTF8&qid=1377789741&sr=8-8&keywords=catseye+bike+computer
also it's cateye, not catseye, but regex doesn't work here so whatever.
Oh also don't add weight to your bike. I can't imagine it's easy to balance that weight perfectly and if you don't balance it perfectly it's going to fuck your steering up.
At that price, you don't get GPS, but you may be able to get wireless. I have a strong preference for Cateye from years of reliable service. Wireless is easier to deal with when installing or doing maintenance on the bike, but the wired computers are silly cheap.
EDIT: Stupid cheap: https://www.amazon.com/CAT-EYE-Computer-Odometer-Speedometer/dp/B007YV1GM4/

The admittedly limited reviews seem to indicate that these barebones options may come along with their own set of complications in terms of durability and ease of set up.
Biggest downside to Garmin and Wahoo offerings I'd say more likely the cost of entry as opposed to usability for casual riders. Reviews on both brands only get good once you hit the the $200 threshold with say the Edge 130 or $250 for the Elemnt Bolt (oddly enough this one's not really on Amazon). And that's before you pick up the separate Speed + Cadence sensors so you're usually in another $70-$80 for those.
very true - would be cool, but at the same time, my brain does this thing where it's like "well you already have a phone which does basically the same thing, so why would you spend $100 on something that you already basically have?"
btw that has some terrible reviews on Amazon (as do a lot of the cheap GPS units), which reinforces my reluctance to buy one.

I use a cheap speedometer for my bikes. Blackburn Delphi 3.0 is all I need, if I want gps I use my phone.
I'd also be interested to know compatability with alternate displays, this looks like it could work:
https://www.amazon.com/BAFANG-Speedometer-Monochrome-Indicator-Interface/dp/B07LG24ZNQ/
you could buy a cheap ANT+ compatible bike computer and connect the sensors to that. I have an iGPSPORT computer. It's cheap, but it works and you can upload the files directly to strava from a computer. Or if you like installing malware on your phone, you can sync with an app.
https://www.amazon.com/Wireless-Computer-Function-Bluetooth-Connection/dp/B07FB26M3S/
Nothing fancy, but if you want to see the numbers while on the bike you either need to connect it to your phone or a bike computer. Or put the bike in front of a laptop or computer.

This barfly mount is the one I have. Pretty happy with it.
It's a Giant Revolt 0 with a few upgrades. I swapped the saddle to a chinese carbon one similar to the S Works Power saddle, but with slightly thicker padding. I had a Sram Red Quarq from a previous bike, so I fitted that as well.
The stock rotors were 160mm, but I swapped those out for 140s. I have good carbon road wheels for my Propel which has 140mm rotors and I wanted to be able to put them straight in if I want to do a road ride on it. As a 70 kg rider I've found no loss in braking performance from the switch, but the same may not be true for heavier riders.
This last upgrade replaced the stock alloy stem and flared alloy gravel handlebar which didn't suit my preferred riding position. I played with a couple of different stems and bars to get the right fit, before committing to the setup here.
The headset cap in this photo is also a gopro mount, but I'll soon be replacing that. I'll fit a spoon-style mount with a gopro mount underneath.

[How about a Blackburn Delphi for $15 then?](http://www.amazon.com/Blackburn-Delphi-3-0-Bicycle-Cyclometer/dp/B000BNS2TM/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1374156670&sr=8-1&keywords=blackburn+delphi+3

Probably not the ‘best’, but I figured I’d thrash it on trail and didn’t want to invest too much.

Been a pretty good unit so far - 100 or so miles off road and I’ve only had the magnet come out of adjustment once. Even downed the bike a month or so ago and it was no worse for the wear aside from a few scratches.
Temp seems to read high as a side note
Save your money for the bike.
The KICKR Core is only going to be more useful than the bare bones wheel on trainer by spending even more money on Zwift/TrainerRoad/Sufferfest/Rouvy for ERG mode and simulating hills.
I recommend using the "dumb" trainer this winter - if you want to connect it, an inexpensive speed sensor will get you on Zwift, TR, or Rouvy and estimate your watts (I used this one last winter: https://www.amazon.com/CooSpo-Bluetooth-Wireless-Waterproof-Computers/dp/B07SPW3GXS/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=coospo+speed&qid=1571342280&sr=8-1 ) - while such calculated watts are not necessarily accurate, you only need consistency for training.
I did the budget Zwift setup last winter and raised my FTP from 169 to 255 (in Zpower watts). I used an old bike (free), an old unsupported mag trainer (free), my iPhone to run Zwift (free in the sense of no added cost), Apple Watch for HR (free in the sense of no added cost) and the $25 CooSpo sensor. The 5 x $14.99 Zwift subscription cost still kept me under $100 total for winter training.
If you REALLY need the immersion of a smart trainer, perhaps lower your sights... while the core is considered a good value in direct-drive smart trainers, wheel-on ones (Saris M2, Tacx Vortex, KICKR Snap) cost about half as much and better serve someone with a limited budget. I recently picked up an M2 for $400 (REI Labor Day sale).
