If your cat is scared of the fountain you can always try stainless steel dog bowls like these.

Cats can't knock these over and they are very easy to clean. I have 1 fountain that only 1 of my cats uses. The others prefer the stainless steel bowls and 1 is scared of the sound of the fountain. She is also terrified of jangling keys and throat clearing sounds.

I got this bowl that reduces splash from messy dogs. Works well. I don’t know why, but the instructions say that it may take a week or two for the bowl to work. Worth the investment for my sloppy drinker. I still get some dribbles from my dog but nothing like I used to.

I rescued a german shepherd mix when he was about 2 months old and he just turned 2 years! He's awesome!

Join /r/dogs for great community, support, and advice.

Here are some of my dog's favorites if you're lost on what to Wishlist on Amazon:

  • Hands down the best ball for fetch, if he likes fetch
  • And the launcher I like this one b/c you can just throw it in a backpack and it'll zip all the way closed (I like to keep a backpack w/ my dog's park toys, some treats, poop bags, wet ones/purell, and his shot records) The best thing about the chuck-it is that you don't have to pick up a slobbery ball.
  • Three very good chew bones
  • Advantage Multi if you're not often taking him onto tick-heavy hikes. If you need tick control, get Frontline and Interceptor for heartworm.
  • The best dog frisbee and I've tried a half dozen. Doesn't fly the best, but it's the most durable, safe, and flies great with a little practice.
  • This Car seat cover is great
  • Flexi leash is really handy when used appropriately.
  • Poo bags can never have enough of. and you go through them pretty quick.
  • Dog backpack great for burning off energy on walks/hikes, and makes them feel like they're doing an important job! I have this one in black. works great.
  • Collapsible water bowl handy for hikes/camping/outings
  • european style leather lead (leash) I'm preferential to the feel of leather for leashes/collars. And the european is absolutely the best - adjustable length and super easy to tether them to a pole/fence if you're eating outdoors or running into a store or something (of course use common sense when doing this!)
  • Harness I'm not a fan of harnesses - they're annoying to put on/take off and just encourage a dog to pull more. But if you want him to pull, towing you on a skateboard or something (my dog loves this) then it's great
Furminator GSD mixes don't need regular brushing, but this one works great for shedding season
Dremel for nail trimming GSD = black nails, a bit trickier to trim. I use this with lots of treats to put a nice round edge and take off a bit of length of my dog's nails. works good but get him accustomed to it slowly and with lots of treats. Pretty soon he won't mind.
*Zukes are great treats for training
  • Bowls that don't tip over. Easy to wash. can't break. My pick.
  • Big crate I use for vacations when I bring my dog but need to leave him in a hotel room or something. It's big and bulky but I like to give him room to move around comfortably.
  • A good shampoo I like hydrosurge unscented but it's not on Amazon =\
  • deodorizer I give my dog a little spritz between baths if he starts to get funky
  • A shower head like this makes bathing super painless. I just bring my dog in the shower w/ me along with some treats and it's quick and easy.
  • a scrubber like this gets my dog cleaner than I can with my hands. I found one at petco I like

Wow I kind of didn't realize I have so much shit for my dog. But he's family so...anyway. Also costco has great beds for $20ish (comparably $80+ from a petstore) They also carry Frontline, lots of treats (buscuits, duck breast jerkey - the best!) good food (Iams ProActive goes on sale once in a while, and they also carry Natures Domain salmon/sweet potato food that's really good).

Maybe something like this?

And don't give him ANY attention when he does it. Completely ignore him- dont look, don't laugh, don't scold. Completely ignore.

I am considering getting a petite doggy slow feeder for my little guy. He swallows his kibble whole and gulps down his wet food within seconds. Sigh.

u/oitsjustjose · 7 pointsr/DobermanPinscher

Yes, this happens every time. I suggest a slopper stopper, it keeps my Doberman from flooding my apartment :P

u/SageTX · 6 pointsr/aww

This no spill bowl was the solution to bulldog slobber and general spilling.

u/downinfragglerock · 5 pointsr/aww

I got my cat an automatic feeder like this one with a bowl on top. Eventually he learned that if he jammed his paw up through the feeder door, he could rattle a few kibbles loose. He was doing it all day long and gaining weight, so now I can only keep one serving in it at a time. I have to admire his determination.

u/TehWeezle · 5 pointsr/ferrets

No problem, glad to help anyone who wants to make the happiest furb they can! ^.^

As for what to do to bond? There are a couple things I can suggest, and it's easier than you'd think:

  1. Most obvious - play with her! And I don't just mean let her bound about, I mean interact with her! Wrestle her with your hands, chase her around as she tries to hide under stuff or darts away from you, get low to the floor and crawl after her/let her crawl all over you... Ferrets crave playtime and attention, and especially since she is a solo ferret, you are going to be HER hooman-bean and she's probably just gonna end up seeing you as a very large ferret - so expect her to want lots of playtime with you as you're gonna be all the cute, adorable, little critter has for love and attention and so she's going to be relying on you for it! It's a responsibility, but it's nice. :3
  2. While scruffing can be - and frequently is amongst us fur baby owners, is - a way of reprimand to train ferrets, it can also be used in bonding. When she's in a more 'mellow' state (i know it might seem like that's non-existent right now, but basically at times when she'll start "speed-bumping"), every now and then, pick her up, gently scruff, as in just enough to hold her so she kind of yawns in submission to relax, lay her across your lap/forearm, and gently rub her belly. Just a couple pets, then let her go off and play again. Do this a couple times a day. It helps because it shows that the scruff is as much out of love as it is reprimand, and them being in that 'vulnerable' state generally would make them tense and squirm, but after learning they can relax and trust you, the bond opens up even more. :)
  3. Put some of your stinky clothes in her cage to sleep on/in! Seriously, go and run, work up a sweat in a workout, anything to get your musk and scent into some clothes, and instead of throwing them in a hamper, toss them into the ferrets cage instead. They have very sensitive noses and use them for everything from identifying what is edible to what smells like a potty to do their business in - so of course giving them something that so inherently smells like you to rest/relax/sleep in and on means anything that has your musk - especially you - is good!
  4. Feeding! Even something as simple as having your ferret know it's you FEEDING them helps them bond. Again, she relys on you now for everything, and food is important to these little monsters! They eat lots, will stow away food and treats as it is instinctual to do so, so if their food bowl is empty/low, let them actually see you come in with their food/treats and they will know that this is the giant ferret who is taking care of them! And speaking of feeding...
  5. Bottle feeding - when you can, either order them from amazon or go to a petshop, and pick these bottles up. Every once in a while, at night or around the time you want them to get used to going to bed (ferrets will acclimate and adjust to your schedule over time), just beat some raw egg up with a fork to mix the yolk and eggwhites, cradle the fur baby in your arms on their backs, and just slowly bottle feed them. Literally does what you think it would with a baby - brings them close, again, lying on back in vulnerable pose, the entire mentality of being fed (although they can't have raw egg all the time, think like 1 full raw egg a week or maybe 2 egg yolks, so think of it as a treat), and plus it's a TREAT! :D And since you're doing it at a time when they would be going to bed anyway (again, this is when they are older and have learned your schedule), they will get full tummies and potentially start dozing off in your arms. A ferret only sleeps/cuddles where it is comfortable, so if it's on you, you're set :3 And from sleeping we get to
  6. Cleaning ears - now most ferrets HATE having their ears cleaned, and it can be a real hassle trying to get one to cooperate to do so. BUT, momma ferrets DO clean their kits ears, generally while they are sleeping, they just use their rough tongue to gently clean behind, the surface of front, and just barely inside ears. Pretty much, you're gonna imitate that. While fert is sleeping, wet q tip (in warm water!) and just gently brush behind the ear, surface of ear, and just little crevices that are visible (NEVER go in!).

That's pretty much what I got/can think of right now, and everything i do with my own ferrets. As a side note, if she is a chewer and you do the bottle feeding thing, cut the rubber tip on bottle low and watch carefully. Swallowing rubber can be dangerous and cause blockage in ferrets. If you prefer, maybe a good, solid eye dropper made of metal or glass. Anywho, I hope this help you a little!

My cat started puking after years of having him, took him to the vet and there was nothing wrong with him at all. The vet suggested one of those slow feeding bowls because he might be eating too fast.

If it is the fact that she's eating too fast, you can try one of these. It's fairly normal for dogs to not chew their food very much though, they don't have the same molars we do. A bigger concern is packing a lot of food down in a very short amount of time, which can cause bloat in the long run.

u/kororon · 2 pointsr/Dogtraining

I use this for my dog: Gobble Stopper. It works fairly well.

u/fwizard226 · 2 pointsr/dogs

This is the one that I use. It has a hinge so it stays open and pushes closed easily, which is great, especially when training on walks. It has an adjustable belt that clips (buuuuut I left it in reach of my dog one time and she ate treats out and chewed the clip...so I have to tie mine now, so sad).

Does it still look like a fanny pack? Yeah. But for me I'm at the point where it's a choice between 1) looking stylish and having a leash aggressive dog or 2) looking like a dork with a fanny pack and training my dog to stop flipping the hell out. So dork it is! :p

u/YellowSwan · 2 pointsr/ferrets

So had a very similar issue, but genders were reversed (had a male who likes to eat off the tier and wood flip the bowl. Axed bowl, but returned it when I got my younger female ferret).

It could be she just likes her food out in the open because she doesn't like her wiskers touching the sides of the bowl.

Or she's doing it because it's her routine and what she's most confortable with.

Or it's dominance, she gets her food her way and by flippong it out of the cage, controlling when your new male eats.

Either you have to live with her doing it for a while and hope she eventually stops, or you can get a bowl that is attached to the cage.

I use MidWest Snap'y Fit Stainless Steel Pet Bowl, 10 oz. Found in the link below https://www.amazon.com/dp/B076M18DJB/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_kEFDCb2DX7CPA

This bowl allows my older one to scoop some food onto the tier to eat, but doesn't allow him to knock it over as it slides tightly into a track. That seemed to clear up my issue... but when he is upset at me he still manages to throw a few kibbles in my direction lol.

Hope this was helpful to you!

u/DietCOKAY · 2 pointsr/kittens

You need to feed them separately and continue to bottle feed them. They aren't fully weened until about 8 weeks. Only use wet foods if you are going to feed them, especially kitten formulated foods. If you feed them milk, it should be a kitten formula and done in a bottle if possible, that way you can measure out how much food each one is getting so no one feels they aren't getting enough and then fighting over it. That's why one cat is NOT a) fighting the other b) suckling on little bits because it's replication of suckling a teet c) expressing aggressive behavior.

So get a few bottles for her to suckle on:

https://www.amazon.com/Pet-Nurser-Bottles-Kit-2-2/dp/B0002ATA6I/ref=sr_1_5?keywords=kitten+feeding+bottles&qid=1558462462&s=gateway&sr=8-5

Kitten formula with bottle: https://www.amazon.com/Kitten-Replacement-Bundle-Nursing-Bottle/dp/B077X3QBF7/ref=sr_1_1_sspa?keywords=kitten+feeding+bottles&qid=1558462518&s=gateway&sr=8-1-spons&psc=1

Nova is probably more likely to go for kitten milk at 4 weeks and it may be her prefered method of feeding, don't worry about weening her too much, it's better for her to be a happy and healthy kitten than a hungry and angry kitten. If that means she drinks more milk than she eats, that's fine, just leave out some food for them to munch on here or there throughout the day for her to nibble on and hopefully eat. Maybe make a gruel and mix in the formula and wet foods to see if that will encourage weening, slowly removing milk as you go every week.

u/sheeeeple · 2 pointsr/Homebrewing

Just noticed that in the background, someone brought a pet food container that they turned into a fermenter. It's a great idea! It's food grade plastic, has an easy to remove lid with a rubber seal, and has convenient handles on the side.

I'm surprised I hadn't seen that online before.

Most Labs do tend to eat with gusto. Make sure he's getting enough food. They do make some different food bowls to supposedly slow dogs down.

You can try a rubber mat with a hole cut in it. Get a bowl with a slight lip at the bottom like this, cut the hole in the mat slightly smaller, then fit the mat over the bowl. The idea is for the mat to be thick enough and stiff enough to be difficult to flip up and to keep your pup from getting a hold on the bowl. A horse stall mat would fit the bill nicely. Places like Tractor Supply and Rural King should have some in various sizes and thicknesses.

u/NYSenseOfHumor · 2 pointsr/rescuedogs

Leash walking takes time to train, I’m talking minimum months, frequently a year or more.

>but what "nose work" can I give her that doesn't involve her wanting to pull me into someone yard?

That’s what you are going to train. You can play find with treats and toys. If you use a soft toy, I suggest storing it with your dog’s food so that it absorbs the smell.

You can also use a snuffle mat at home to hide treats, or kibble at meals. Using it for meals is great for active, nose driven dogs.

If she pulls you into a yard, stand firm and practice good leash manners.

I recommend getting something like the SureFeed with the rear cover:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01JM4XK9W

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07KXYB8PN

Put her food in there and she'll be able to eat it at her own pace whenever she wants while the bengal won't be able to get to it.

I actually use one for my bengal, Crixus. My other cat, Spartacus, eats like a dog; if there's food available, he's going to eat it. This allows Crixus to free-range throughout the day and Sparta can't touch it.

I have used this feeder for over two years for two cats.
http://amzn.com/B00MU2F8C6

It isn't a smart feeder and the panel to set the schedule isn't intuitive at all, but once it is set, very worth it.

My cats don't get along very well so I made a thin divider in the center of the dish.

Having them beg before the sunrise was the main goal. Spreading out a balanced diet of four meals is much better for them.

Currently we use Gobble Stoppers, we have ordered a few different sizes to figure out what works best and what bowl size works best.

It has slowed our 3 down, except for one. He will get frustrated, grab the stopper, and use it to fling the bowl upside down.

Chewy.com has them as well and that is where we order our stuff from now

u/legicid3 · 1 pointr/dogs

Let me try to explain it a bit better. I can't find the exact leash I have, but here's a similar one: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00CCW50WC/ref=pd_sbs_199_5?ie=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=EYXAEVSV2RHRR5VJX535.

If you look at the shoulder leash or waist in the last image, you get that by hooking one of the leash clips to a loop. You can thread the leash through a treat pouch with belt loops before you clip it to the loop. I use this treat pouch but obviously there are many others with belt loops. Does that make any sense? If not, I'll take a picture of mine later.

u/schmin · 1 pointr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

Declawing is the same as surgically removing the last bone from each of your fingertips. Learn to keep the cat's nails trimmed correctly. Too short and if a cat's not used to it, they can't walk, run, or jump without wobbling until they grow back.

Not all cats like scratching posts -- mine prefers cardboard, but not the 'on-edge' cardboard cat scratchers, so my dad helped me add a wooden 'tray' to the top of the post in which I place flat squares of cardboard cut from boxes. She scratches and sleeps there, and sometimes just perches there to watch out the window. Don't get a carpet-covered scratching post or pad unless you want to teach your cat that scratching carpet is a good idea. =P

I have a Booda Dome for a litter box -- she still tracks some litter. I don't think there's a system out there that will keep cats from tracking any. Some litters are better than others. Covered litter boxes are nice for the humans, but not all cats will adapt to the flaps. Some litters are lower 'dust' than others, and this is better for cats' lungs and humans' alike. =)

Not all cats will respond to catnip or all types of toys. My cat is indifferent to laser pointers, and only likes the actual fur-covered realistic mice. She doesn't care for bell toys, but those little plastic springs drive her nuts (when she's in the mood). Her favorite toy is a wooden wobble 'bead' in which you can place catnip. Also a Da Bird Feather Cat Toy which you can make flutter to sound like a real bird. I'd suggest the non-collapsible one, as I'd suspect my cat would pull that apart. =P

Talk to your vet about what food(s) are actually good for your cat. From my research, you want to avoid bone meal products or and 'meal' products as they include ground bone which is hard on your cat's kidneys. Also avoid grains. Turkey is better than chicken; not all fish are terrible, but you have to consider mercury levels. You should consider only feeding your cat wet food, but this is more expensive, and difficult to manage with hurried schedules. Mine loves kibble and hates having to give that up, so I leave that out all the time and supplement with a big scoop of wet food at night. (These are the best quality, least expensive per-serving foods I've found.) A 6-lb. bag of kibble seems to last my cat ~3 months. At four days (servings) per can, the 12-pack of 12.5 oz. cans last about 1.5 months. You'll need two snap-on plastic can lids. My cat adores salmon as you may see. =P

Not all cats will like all types of cat beds.

Mine LOVES water (she literally demands 'cat showers') and she likes to play with the dripping tub faucet, so next I'm going to get a cat drinking fountain. Cats in general prefer 'fresh' or moving water, so mine always wants clean water in her bowl every time.

Because no one cat will like every toy or bed or litter box, you may have to buy more than one. Talk to your vet about what types to try and how to encourage a cat to like what you buy. I put catnip on my cat's things -- that seems to have worked, but not all cats respond to catnip.

I've had 2 auto feeders for my cat.

The first one was similar to this: https://www.amazon.com/Petmate-Portion-Automatic-Feeder-brushed/dp/B005O324ACand my cat broke into it on the 2nd day. The bowl detaches from the feeder part for easy cleaning which is nice, but the part where the food comes out is not covered by anything, which is how my cat managed to break in. He stuck his paw up the chute where the food came from and was able to wiggle his paw around to get all the food out.

The second and current one is similar to this: https://www.amazon.com/Crown-Majestic-Diamond-Automatic-Feeder/dp/B00JIWW3VUand it's been fantastic for the 2 or so years we've used it. The one I have doesn't have the water attachment, so I think they've upgraded models or something. For this one, the bowl doesn't detach, so it's not as easy and convenient to clean but still doable. This one does have a little plastic guard where the food goes into the bowl which prevents my cat from breaking in. The lid that covers the food reservoir latches nicely and can't be broken into unless your cats have opposable thumbs ;) unfortunately I don't remember how the lid on the first one attaches

One concern I have for you and your cats is that they might not be happy to share food from the same bowl, but if your cats are ok with that then you should be fine. Hope this is helpful, let me know if you need more!

It could be that your kitten needs to slow down how it's eating...you could try feeding smaller amounts more frequently throughout the day, or a slow feeder bowl. If it continues it could be a diet incompatibility and you may have to discuss what other diets to transition to with your vet. You can also see if your vet can recommend any probiotics that may help as well, those are typically not prescription (where I live they aren't) and they may have some on hand to sell you. Best of luck.

Image: Pixie is confused about why she can't get into her sister Trixie's bowl any more!

For years, I've used the PetSafe automatic feeder to dispense kibble, because my last cat was a food-obsessed only cat and this was the only way to keep him from begging incessantly. When he passed away and I adopted new kitties last year, I continued using the same automatic feeder as they had no complaints about sharing a bowl. Unfortunately, it turns out that one of them will often not eat her share of kibble, and her sister will happily eat the extra, so a weight problem was developing. Enter the SureFeed Microchip feeder. I had been looking for options and ran across a mention of this here on Reddit, and as it will actually read an implanted microchip instead of requiring a collar, it seemed perfect for my needs, although pricey.

I ordered two feeders in early February, expecting to be able to start training the kitties right away. Unfortunately, I missed the teeny, tiny "batteries not included" note on the order page, and so due to weather issues and multiple Amazon delivery failures, it took nearly two weeks to get enough batteries for both feeders (I had enough for one but not both.) In the meantime, however, I decided to set the feeders up with the lid open, and at least start getting the kitties used to the new contraption. Fortunately, since they have a self-cleaning litter box and were eating from an automatic feeder, they're already used to small mechanical noises and just needed to get used to the new bowls.

The first thing I did was take the automatic feeder and large shared bowl out, then put the feeder contraptions in the same place inside the cabinet where the kitties eat. I opened the lids on both feeders, and set the bowls in front of them so the kitties could have a new bowl without having to stick their head into the smaller confined space at first. Once they got used to the bowls, I put the bowls in the feeders and left them with the lid open for another week. During this week, I would occasionally call the kitties over, and push the open/close button on the feeder with batteries to show the mechanism without having it be in the way of eating. Lots of "check this out, isn't it cool!" positive encouragement while doing so. Luckily my kitties are young, curious, and fascinated by movement so they got used to it pretty quickly.

After three weeks of eating in open feeders, yesterday I finally programmed each feeder to read the microchip from one cat. Luring the cats through the hoop was no problem, a couple of favorite crunchy treats dropped in their bowl did the trick for that. Then once the feeder was programmed and the lid closed, another round with crunchy treats to lure them through and show them that it would open for them when they moved their head through.

The first couple of hours with programmed feeders was a little bit dicey, mostly because extra-eating kitty was quite confused about why she could no longer eat from her sister's bowl, and also slightly worried about the bright green light reflecting behind the open lid of her feeder. A couple of times sitting with her an re-assuring her while she approached the feeder and ate took care of that, along with setting the lid to the maximum slow-close duration so she had enough time to approach, open, contemplate, and get comfortable to eat.

The biggest problem mentioned in the reviews is the ability for a second kitty to come over the open back of a feeder and steal food while the "authorized" kitty eats. Luckily mine aren't at the food-stealing stage yet, but now that I don't need a cabinet large enough to handle the automatic feeder, I'll be moving the microchip feeders into a small Kallax cube shelf so each kitty is in a walled-off section that her sister can't invade. Bonus for being able to store the kibble and supplies in the upper sections of the shelf. There is also a back cover available for sale for the feeder, although apparently they can't manage to keep that in stock as it keeps going "unavailable" on Amazon. The only other change I need is to order a second set of the stainless steel bowls for the feeder, the included bowls are plastic and based on past experience, plastic bowls often cause chin acne in cats. I'd prefer ceramic over stainless, but so far I can't find the right size/shape of ceramic bowl to use with it.

Overall, a pricey option for multiple kitties, but worth it to be able to control feeding portions without having to separate kitties or add more daily feedings or other sort of crazy additions to daily life. Open feeders twice per day, add appropriate amount of kibble, and done. (Supplemented with wet food, which is a whoooooooole other thing. Note, though, that the lid on this feeder closes well enough it could support feeding wet food instead of kibble if needed. )

hahaha I can totally see myself doing that too.

My dog is tiny so I have to cut her treats into microscopic pieces which is a gigantic PITA but one advantage it gives me is that I don't have to carry a large volume of treats around. So I think I'll be okay with the treats themselves moving within the bag, but wasn't as sure how I'd do with the movement of the bag itself. I'm thinking about trying the PetSafe pouch since it's flat but also easy to open.

I have a dachshund that does this sometimes. I started mixing in a tablespoon of wet dog food with his kibble and now have no problems. I just keep the can in the fridge, takes us about 4-5 days per can. Got one of those can saver lid things to pop on the top.

Used to buy Nutro from PetSmart but now I now buy I&love&you brand from amazon, natural ingredients, smells like human food. Lol! Decently cost effective. Seems that he prefers purina salmon kibble with beef booyah stew the most... but then sometimes he’ll start refusing again and then I’ll switch up the wet food and he’s fine. Maybe he’s just bored with no variety? ¯_(ツ)_/¯ go figure.

You could try one of these portable water bottle/bowl things. I'm sure Petsmart/Co probably sell them.
