Do it yourself. It is MUCH cheaper.

I recommend this one if you want to replace the entire knob. (kwikset) It has the benefit of being able to re-key your locks in about 10 seconds, without disassembling the knob, if you decide to change your locks again in the future. Super easy. $20 per knob.

Alternatively, you could get something like this (re-keying kit). It's only $10, and you can re-key several locks. It's definitely a bit delicate though. Make sure to follow the instructions very precisely, or you'll end up with pins shooting everywhere from the springs.

Whichever method you choose, you should be done in about an hour. Do you like the idea of having a job that makes/saves $130 per hour?

When you say "apartments," do you mean actual apartment with their own locking doors, or more like mother-in-law suites that are just connected internally?

Because if it's apartments, you need to lock your door. If it's suites, you need to buy and install a locking doorknob. Here's one for ~$16 Just find one that matches the rest of your doorknobs; five minutes with a screwdriver and you'll be all set.

That is a tubular lock pretending to be a cylindrical. It is complete garbage in every way and should not be sold but rather given away as it will surely break shortly as it is not a durable lock. I am pretty sure this guy was a huge fucking scammer, ironically he charge a $29 service call, that is how they get you, with low service calls and sky high prices for garbage. You likely googled the shit and got a scammer. This shit happens all the time and you are not the first to get conned. Frankly you schmucked yourself but realistically it is not like you knew any better. You fucked up and it is going to be a huge hassle to try to get your money back. Lastly you should really replace the lock with something else that is at least a similar color to the door.

I would recommend a Baldwin

Many are less than $20 for the whole thing.

Can you switch to one-handed handiwork otherwise known as reading erotica rather than watching porn? It's what I do sometimes anyway just to switch it up and keep it fresh. Also...on the kid front? It may seem like a harsh way to go about establishing a boundary, but I went to the hardware store and put a doorknob with it's very own key on my bedroom door. because, here's the thing. Kids love to snoop. I knew EVERYTHING about everything in my parents' room. When they weren't around I went through their books, under their mattress, inside every drawer, every box in the closet and put back everything exactly as it was. My uncle lived with us for awhile. I would borrow his VHS porn tapes and then rewind them back to the very second where he had stopped it each and every time I used them. And I was the boring, goody two shoes kid in the house, who only challenged my parents openly once as a teen (they refused to let me go to a party in the middle of the week that everyone was going to and I was a freaking A student who never asked for anything). But I digress. Don't feel like you failed for getting a lock. If it makes you feel better, get one for everybody. You get this for them and this one for you.

Get a lock for your door!!!! Squeakiness check the bed and do some BDing! In the event of a squeaky bed throw a couple blankets on the floor.
A polite guest should not come knocking in the middle of the night. For added effect hang a “Do not disturb” sign on your door.

Yes there are various keypads and smart locks that work with just a latch. E.g. with no particular endorsement Schlage has a keypad locks in a number of styles and there are various Ultraloq models.

So get a door closer (I own this cheap thing and it works) and a lockset that is always locked. This will make the door secure every time, for less than $50 and 20 min of your time.

I am not saying don't install cameras, but I do feel you should stop inviting them to enter, too.

Buy a doorknob like this. You can lock it from the inside or outside depending on how you like. Put things you want to keep safe in your room. Keep it locked you have people over.

Oh, the joys of owning a home! I need a doorknob. A bit boring, but totally necessary!

I bought one of these "used" from Amazon and just didn't use the included non-smart deadbolt.

Wrong color, but something like this?

My sister's cat figured out how to open doors. Her house had lever style door knobs for all of the inside locks, so the cat just had to pull down on them and push. This got so annoying that she changed all of her doors to round knobs.

If you need a knob they aren't hard to find. Example

This is "expanded metal":

Rats can chew through it but then they can also chew through hardware cloth (aka wire mesh screen).

But combining the two to form two or more layers together might actually slow them down enough so that you could catch them at it before they succeed. Just a though.

I wasn’t a fan of how low the exhaust was either, I swapped the hangers with these and it looks much better
