They're adjustable dumbbells. I don't think they are Powerblocks but they are similar.

u/hannahbug28 · 11 pointsr/xxfitness

Fitness Blender has a huge variety of videos, and you can easily search for a specific type of workout on their website. You can search by difficulty, length, body focus, equipment, etc. I find that they are an excellent alternative to the days where I can't get to the gym. My personal opinion is that you can use their videos as your main source of strength training if you are relatively new, but as you progress you will eventually run out of the type of weight/equipment you need at home to keep momentum. I can say that during their strength routines, they use powerblocks. These are by far the best investment I have made in equipment for home. So to answer your question, yes I use Fitness Blender regularly (2-3 times a week), in addition to gym training. I am also naturally petite, and I have gained significant strength/muscle definition throughout my entire body with my routine. Best of luck!!!

Here's my official certificate of excommunication. I'm so sorry.

Particularly shameful that I was weaker than this.

Here is a post for a five minute stretch.

Create a YouTube playlist with these two videos. Go for a short walk in the morning and then go through the videos before you take your shower.

You can do the same thing after work and a few days a week add some gentle free weight exercises in. Here is a link for some good beginner weights:

Instead of the bowflex, buy 2 of these

You may want to talk to a lawyer about liability and stuff like that as well.

u/phrakture · 5 pointsr/Fitness

You could buy two of these and bring them to the gym with you. They take normal plates, so you could fill it up with 25s.

Not to steer you away from 'the brief' (which means I'm blatantly going to try and steer you away from the brief), but is the idea turning her off free weights the idea of dissembling things and having to lug weight disks on and off? That she'd just rather get on and go?

Because if so you want to see if she can be tempted by a light neoprene dumbbell set (something like this).

Some aerobic blocks, or the simplest of gym benches

A yoga mat.

An entry levelish rowing machine.

Perhaps a Swiss ball if space allows.

And a framed poster of basic dumbbell exercises, something like this, so she can just see an exercise to do and go. It'd be easier than putting a pin in a machine because these multiple exercise machines still need maneuvering and it won't nearly be as good for her or as inclusive.

You should also be able to get it all for well under budget and a couple of hundred dollars to spare. Downton Abbey boxset?

No bars, no collars, or pulling things apart and putting them together.

I'd be tempted to take her to a sports equipment showroom to let her try out the sort of machines she think she wants. Or take her to a hotel gym to see if there's an all body cardio machine (like rowing) that she could get into.

As for the machine you've picked out. Would it work? Sure. 80% of the weight there she's never really going to use, realistically. It won't be as easy as sticking a pin in and 'going', for most of it, and it's an expensive and voluminous clothesrack if it ends up not being used that'll be nightmare to shift once you've assembled it. But most of the reviews will probably be comparing it to far more expensive-type machines people have tried in the gym. But these multiple exercise machines? Not great.

I haven't used that particular set of dumbbells, though I have used a different brand that also use a screw on end to stay in place. As bloke226 said, the ends tend to unscrew themselves during sets. There's very little room left if you have the dumbbells loaded to 100 lbs, so I'd be concerned about it falling off.

I've used these before and they're absolutely great. Though they're much more expensive.

u/Thalassophob · 3 pointsr/Fitness

With a little bit of innovation these might be able to suit your needs.

My life would greatly improve with This bathroom set because ours is falling apart and looks like crap, or This table because our current one is a safety hazard to our three children or a weight set to get into shape.

Somethings I think you should add to your list are: one, two, three, because I noticed you like camping as well. We try to camp as often as possible it is just so relaxing getting to get away from everything for a weekend.

u/UniverseChamp · 3 pointsr/gainit

Here’s what I would recommend for starting home training balancing cost and utility. Obviously, if you afford all of it and have the space, just do that.

1-pullup bar or rings

2-resistance bands

3-dumbbells (shop for used, if possible, if space is tight try these)

4-adjustable bench (same, used benches go for as low as $30)

5-barbell set (time to start deadlifting)

6-power rack (don’t go cheap here)

I've been trying to get in shape since I'm over 1.5 years post baby. No excuses! Me and /u/mynthe and other Minneapolis meetup girls are going to share our progress this summer. So far I have cut soda (so many unnecessary calories), I'm on day 6 no soda. And I'm making it a goal to at least do some physical activity each day (lots of walks with my toddler) :)

You could also save a lot of money by doing dumbbells, a bench, and pullup bar instead. Dumbbells:

Here's a dumbbell program:

If you prefer an exercise video format, look at Body Beast.

All the upper body exercises for lifting can be done with dumbbells pretty easily. Lower body exercises are a little more complicated, but generally go with using one leg at a time so you need half the weight. If you want to look "huge" a barbell will let you lift longer before running out of weight, but if you just want to look better like most people do dumbbells will do all you need except for the pulling exercises (which you need a pullup bar or exercise bands for). The dumbell substitutes are less risky than the barbell versions anyways (for squats).

u/heroette · 2 pointsr/StrongCurves

great recommendation! anecdotally, i bought and used these for almost a year before deciding to replace them with the core fitness adjustable dumbbells because the bowflex dumbbells (at a 17" fixed length) are a bit too unwieldy for me (5'6" 130lb woman) while the core fitness dumbbells vary in length from 9-3/8” to 14-3/8" depending on how much weight you have on them. only downside is you can only adjust the weight in 5lb increments as opposed to the bowflex's 2.5lb but, for me, they are still much better for maintaining proper form so i might recommend them over the others. additionally, my husband (6'2" 170lb man) also prefers these over the bowflex because they are less awkward for him to maneuver as well.

u/BrotherFatcake · 2 pointsr/homegym

I have these, inexpensive and I like them. Not much to them, add weights, lift repeat. They just work.

You can get the 90s for $500 new on amazon now FYI - link

Just thought I'd put that out there for the good of everyone in the thread. Given that $350 is still a good used price (particularly if you include the stand), and $220 is a goddamn steal.

I don't think I've seen them any lower than $300 around me, and they disappear in hours when they go up for sale.

u/rude119 · 2 pointsr/pelotoncycle

There have been a lot of comments already but for me none of the accessories from Peloton are really worth it and can be had somewhere else online for less (or just better quality, as in the HRM).

For the weights...you can get a 20 lb set (3 pairs of different weights) from Amazon for about what Peloton charges for just a pair. Yes, the colors a little funky, but you can probably find some more neutral colors for a bit more if you look around. link: [Amazon Dumbbell Set] (https://smile.amazon.com/AmazonBasics-20-Pound-Dumbbell-Stand-Lettering/dp/B0727Q5F94/ref=sr_1_5?s=exercise-and-fitness&ie=UTF8&qid=1522681247&sr=1-5&keywords=weight%2Bset&th=1)

For the HRM...I purchased the Scosche Rythm+. It's priceier but it goes on your forearm instead of a strap around your chest so I thought it was worth it.

For the shoes...I ordered a few pairs online from websites that had free or very low cost return shipping to find a pair that fit right. The wife's shoes were about $60 and my shoes were about $45, they were previous year models so were found in the sale/clearance section of the sites. Some of the sites I visited when looking were sierratradingpost.com, nashbar.com, and artscyclery.com, but there are plenty more out there.

For the mat...we already had one from a previous stationary bike we owned. It was from Amazon and about $28, it fit the Peloton so we decided to keep and use that one.

The only thing I did get from Peloton were the Urbanears Hellas Wireless Headphones. The only reason I got them from Peloton was because I had a referral code to get $100 off of accessories and because that was the only item I saw from Peloton that could not be had for a good amount less elsewhere. They still charged me a separate $12.95 to get the headphones shipped to me since they don't arrive with the bike. They only have black though (if they still sell them), so if you want another color you will have to buy them elsewhere.

Hope this helps.

u/yenom_esol · 2 pointsr/P90X

there is also a select tech 1090 that goes up to 90 lbs. I am doing body beast and have been contemplating making the upgrade myself. I've seen them as low as 230 each on Amazon but haven't quite pulled the trigger.

u/ChicagoDogEater · 2 pointsr/homegym

I’ve had my eye on these for a while. I work as a carpenter so after the next big job I think I’m gonna pull the trigger. Running the rack just seems so easy with these bad boys.

u/Rawtashk · 2 pointsr/movies

1: pullup bar. You don't need some fancy $50 one.

2: Pushup stands. Again, you don't need to spend $40 on 2 pieces of angled plastic or metal. (don't use the pushup stands to start with. Do the first 3 weeks without them, then step up to them after your chest has built up a bit).

3: Weights. If you have some money, I would suggest the select tech dumbells. They're $300, but you'll save time by being able to easily adjust them for every workout.

Or, get a starter weight set like this. There's probably something like that at walmart too. But, DO NOT GET THE SET THAT HAS WIDE PLASTIC WEIGHTS!!!! You won't be able to use them for anything else because they take up the whole bar. After you get the weight set you can buy individual plates like this.

But, if you really have the money, then I would really suggest the select tech ones. When you have you 1 minute break between sets you'll want to sit down and rest for a second, not sit there and have to take the collars off, put on new weights, then collar them back on every single time.

4: Take a "before" picture while shirtless from the front, and from the side. Take one while flexing as well. In 3 weeks you're going to be tired. You'll want to stop. You won't think you've made any progress. That's when you pull out that picture and compare it to yourself now. You see yourself every day, so you don't notice the gradual changes. You see that progress with your own eyes....and then you get excited. "I did that in 3 or 4 weeks?!? Holy shit! I can't wait to see what the next 30 days brings my way!!!". That's going to be your reward, and it will keep you motivated.

5: Download a calorie counter for your phone. I used the one by Fat Secret. TRACK WHAT YOU DO AND WHAT YOU EAT! It's really not that hard, and you can simply scan in most labels on things you eat, or look them up in its database. THIS IS CRUCIAL! 80% of your results will depend on what you eat. If you eat shit, you'll look like shit, even if you workout every day :-/

But, the MOST IMPORTANT THING YOU NEED is self-will. You will not want to do it. You will be tired, you will be sore, you will want to quit. DO NOT ALLOW YOURSELF. You're tired, yes...but I promise you that you'll have more energy AFTER a workout than you did before it. You're sore? Too bad, still do a workout. Working those muscles drives blood to them, which is crucial to getting that soreness out.

I give you this 100% promise....If you eat right and if you exercise for 90 days, I PROMISE YOU that you won't look at yourself in the mirror and say "damn. I wish I'd never exercised". I promise you.

Naw. These are the old school ones:

POWERBLOCK Elite 90 Adjustable 5 to 90-Pounds per Dumbbell Set https://www.amazon.com/dp/B001CC724W/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_cud1DbJVKYP70

They're under 600 complete on Amazon, delivered. I think I paid 450 on an Amazon warehouse sale years ago, then added the 70-90 modules.

Amazon has adjustable ones that are almost the same weight for $50 each. I got a set of these for $40 each off Amazon a couple months ago. It didn't take as long to ship as Amazon says it will.

I was wanting some as well, but the reviews on the Bowflex and NordicTrack ones made me a bit nervous - too many people talked about the way the weights shifted when you lift them, and some people even mentioned that plates had started falling off over time. (!!) I’ve never tried the Powerblocks, but the square shape was a little off-putting. I just wasn’t sure if they’d be comfortable without trying them first.

I ended up buying these adjustable dumbbells by Core Fitness. I was pretty hesitant to buy a brand that I personally hadn’t heard of before, but the reviews on Amazon seemed good. I also really like that when you increase the weight, the plates add on to the ends - basically less weight means a smaller (length) dumbbell, which isn’t the case for the Bowflex or NordicTrack.

I have been VERY happy with them so far! Very very minimal movement in the plates when lifting. And the only negative thing - which I was aware of from reading the reviews - was that over 40lbs, the tray wants to stay attached to the dumbbell when you go to lift it up. No big deal, really...just put your toes on the edge of the tray and it lifts right off.

Edit - I had screw-on-lock adjustable dumbbells before this and hated using them. My husband and I are usually working out together, so we’re either constantly changing each other’s weights, or having to rearrange our routine to wait until the other is completely finished. Way too time consuming and just generally a PITA. These take about 1-2 seconds to change the weight, I swear I wish I had bought them months ago.

u/voyvf · 1 pointr/Fitness

If you have adjustable dumbbells and micro plates I don't see why it'd be a problem for bench.

For OHP, you'll either learn how to clean a DB at working weight to your shoulder, or you'll give up and use lighter weights for the BB, so it's all good there, too.

I've been on my workout plan for just over a week now, which has consisted of mostly watching what I'm eating and exercising a few times a week. I want to make a life change, so I don't want to go too hard or I'll burn out quickly. I want to finally get on the track to being healthy. The workout I have been following requires weights and I don't have any. I've been still doing the moves I'm supposed to do, just not giving my arms the proper workout they need & deserve. So far I've lost 6lbs, and I know if I keep to it, I'll be healthy in no time. If I could get a set of weights, I think that would help me immensely.

Thanks for the contest. This is awesome! :)

That being said, I can load 3 25's per side on a handle pretty nicely.

Depends on what you need. If you need quick adjustable dumbbells to switch weights fast, a set of powerblocks would work. Or, if you dont need really quick adjustments, you could do something like these omni dumbbells. Both options will give you a lot of room to grow at a fraction of the cost of a full dumbbell set. The ones I provided allow for a large range. You can get some cheaper if you buy a set with a smaller range. Hope this helps.

u/bmanCO · 1 pointr/Fitness

I bought this set on Amazon (although it was about $20 cheaper when I got it) and some extra 10 lb weights for about $1 per pound from my local sporting goods store. It ended being a very affordable, effective dumbbell set.

u/Rokeon · 1 pointr/xxfitness

Which style of adjustable dumbbells are you looking for? Amazon currently has a single 10-90lb Bowflex dumbbell for $299, but to get a pair in that price range that go up to 100 lbs each you'll probably have to get one of the mini-barbell type sets with cast iron plates rather than the quicker ones with a pin or dial to set the weight. I know I've looked for used Bowflex sets on Craigslist before and they're still pretty expensive in my area at least.

u/thunderflies · 1 pointr/progresspics

Yep I was skinny fat at around 165 so you're probably about where I started. I would also recommend a leverage style pull up bar mounted in your bedroom closet and force yourself to do 5-10 pull-ups every time you walk by it, that helped build my biceps and back quite a bit. Here is the weight set I bought, nothing special but it's cheap and heavy and you can pick it up and put it down over and over, you will want an adjustable bench as well: US Weight F0105E- 105-Pound Weight Set with Dumbbells https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0041G3ZK6/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_E7uJxb5QTKE95

Sure Enough. Any reason in particular you like these over the bowflex?

u/Pink_182 · 1 pointr/RedPillWomen

I would start a home workout system if you don't like the gyms near yoga mat, set of dumbells, and resistance bands should get you through any home workout to start.

I find 30 day fitness challenges on pinterest and try to complete 1-2 every month. I think having that whole month of things planned helps me. I also set up a reward for it. So this month I'm doing an abs and arms one. If I get 28/30 days done, I will go get a manicure.

I set more weekly rewards too. I love new workout clothes. I have a whole list of things I want. So I set a goal with a new tank or sports bra as the reward. Example for the upcoming week (i run my weeks Monday-Sunday, I know that is weird) I want to run 12 6-minute miles. Obviously not all at once, but over the course of the week. If I do it, then I will be getting this tank. This is a hard one, I've been trying to get it for a few months now, but trying keeps me heading out and motivated.

I would also say find an accountabilibuddy (south park reference anyone?) to try and help keep you motivated. That can be online (me if you want me pestering your inbox) or a RL friend.

If you're training mainly for looks (everyone wants to be strong, but I'm saying you're more concerned with upper body than lower body) you can do a dumbbell program.

I really want to get the Dip and Pullup attachment as well. I live in a semi-cramped apartment on the third floor of a very old apartment building, otherwise I'd have a heavy bag and a jump rope to go with it. I love being able to workout at home, I should have started setting up a home gym years ago. Tough to do when before you find a place that you know you're going to live in for a while. I honestly think the biggest upside of owning a house for me is going to be the epic home gym setup I can have there.

They're 30lb fixed-weight dumbbells, much like these. Adding more weight would involve buying heavier dumbbells. Or joining a gym, I guess, but I prefer working out in my living room with a ufc dvd on the tv, rather than in a gym surrounded by (no offense anybody) a bunch of muscle heads.
