I don't have a flamethrower, but I do have one of these propane flame torches for weed control.

For comparison, the big burners on a high-end domestic gas stovetop put out about 20,000 BTU/hr, the commercial ranges used in Chinese restaurants for heating woks put out 80-100,000 BTU/hr, and turkey fryer bases put out 50-180,000 BTU/hr.

The "Mr Heater" flame torch (love the name), on the other hand, puts out 500,000 BTU/hr.

Even so, it is surprisingly ineffective for melting ice and snow. In my mind, I would sort of wave it at a pile of snow and watch with satisfaction as it melted instantly, or even vaporized. In practice - nothing of the sort. You point it at some snow, and you wait .. and wait ... and wait ... and eventually it begins to melt.

So, sadly, I don't think a flamethrower is the answer.

Go to your hardware store and get one of these.

https://www.amazon.com/CRL-Complete-Propane-Torch-UL100/dp/B00QL53S0W/ref=sr_1_18?ie=UTF8&qid=1549898608&sr=8-18&keywords=propane+torch

It's a much more sturdy, more powerful and more versatile thing than those butane kitchen torches.

Still perfectly safe to use (provided you're not an idiot) and safe for food.

Only need 2 bricks. and the burner is very affordable, albeit a little unsuitable. its the cheapest way to accomplish what he's trying to do. its like the definition of hobbyist tools.

Oh, that's not so bad. From your post, I was expecting 4 yr old tree saplings! You could run a lawnmower over that and it will be 90% improved.

Don't worry yourself about getting your strategy right the first time. You can try a couple different things, and go at it again if the previous failed.

These would each work:

  • pour boiling water on the weeds, which will kill them
  • get a weed-killing flame wand
  • kill and remove the weeds with a pass-thru hoe
  • pull by hand (labor intensive, but can be relaxing)

Don't worry about "kill or pull first". Even if it's a perennial with a gigantic root system, it can only survive losing its top a couple times before it dies completely, so feel free to just keep pulling the tops off.

You'll have to return a couple times a year to kill new weeds, this is a regular maintenance item. New seeds will germinate, and the roots will grow in mulch just like dirt.

Personally, I've never had much success with weed mats. New weed seeds will blow in from the wind, and they will germinate in the mulch you put on top of the mat. But to answer your question, no, you don't have to put it down the same day or week or month.

I don't see much weeds worth identifying in your photos.

I briefly considered buying this thing.

I use this torch. I use it for silver but I do rather large pieces and have never had trouble getting it hot enough. The opposite actually lol I have to be careful not to melt the whole thing!

That's my quick recommendation, those will be enough to get you into trouble.

MAP/PRO TORCH KIT by BERNZOMATIC MfrPartNo 345372 https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00L8T9IC8/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_l7FWzb3ZB7E7D

Assuming your power supply is like 90amps, you will want a 120amp (9 series) torch with gas valve. The Ck part is ck9v-12 for 12’ or -25 for 25’

https://www.amazon.com/CK-CK9V-12-RSF-Torch-Valve-Piece/dp/B00JMG453G/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?keywords=ck9v-12&qid=1556883994&s=gateway&sr=8-1

You will then need a ground lug to attach your argon hose to and clamp your stick electrode holder to:

https://www.amazon.com/Weldmark-105Z57-15PCA-Power-Adapter/dp/B0711BKF7Q/ref=mp_s_a_1_fkmr2_1?keywords=tig+torch+ground+lug+ck&qid=1556884235&s=gateway&sr=8-1-fkmr2

The torch hose goes in the smaller opening.

You could also get a torch that plugs directly into your machine with a gas pigtail but I don’t know what fittings your machine has if they are 3/8” dinse:

https://www.amazon.com/9V-Cooled-Torch-1-Piece-Connector/dp/B07KRPGRKH/ref=mp_s_a_1_15?keywords=9v+tig+torch&qid=1556884503&s=gateway&sr=8-15

I would suggest going with ck for the torch and their braided hose.

Or get one of these cheap torches that burns camping butane.

I use this one and am also a beginner :) Been very happy with it, as my last one was very under powered.

a set of torches is around $200 to $300 and where i am you have to rent the bigger tanks and i dont know what small tanks cost. go to a welding store and rent a K cylinder of oxygen, buy a set of harris torches and get a propane tip then hook the fuel regulator to your BBQ tank if you have one at home and you are in business. here are cheap regulators, dont buy used ones. https://www.ebay.com/itm/NEW-HARRIS-Model-601-Regulator-Set-Oxygen-Acetylene-Cutting-Welding-Torch/163627986056?hash=item2618fcec88:g:8DIAAOSw3XZcokQO

you can buy some cheap chinese sets, they are probably fine. look on ebay. if you want to just cut and save money then use propane, acetylene is a rip off. here is a good set. https://www.amazon.com/Harris-Ironworker-Oxygen-Acetylene-4400366/dp/B01DN2OWIW/ref=sr_1_2?keywords=harris+torch+set&qid=1572326696&sr=8-2

This one is the one I'm fond of, but it's definitely a lot more money: https://www.amazon.com/Bernzomatic-ST250-Micro-Torch-Kit/dp/B0000CBJBQ/ref=sr_1_7?ie=UTF8&qid=1479130801&sr=8-7&keywords=Micro+Torch

Also, I have no idea what that video is about, and if I saw a guy filming and talking to himself like that in public I would probably call security.

This kit has served me well. I wouldn't use it all day every day, but I've wired up a few cars and panels with it.
