The makeup artist from What Not to Wear has a great book for makeup basics, including eyebrow stuff. get this book!
Edit: spelling
I have this book on my bookshelf about perfume and it says that with the exception of some very cheap fragrances, they do indeed last a very long time.
There’s The Politics of Black Women’s Hair,
Hair Story: Untangling the Roots of Black Hair in America,
and, bonus politics & social conformity, Plucked: A History of Hair Removal.
You may also like the anthology Me, My Hair, and I: Twenty-seven Women Untangle an Obsession
Here goes the dump:
On perfume industry:
Chandler Burr - The Perfect Scent: A Year Inside the Perfume Industry in Paris and New York - the book that originally got me into fragrances. It is exactly what it says on the cover: an inside look at how mainstream fragrances (specifically Jardin Sur Le Nil by Hermes and Lovely by S J Parker) are developed.
Jean Claude Ellena - Diary of a Nose J-C Ellena is the head perfumer at Hermes and a part time writer (and a hero of the previous book). This book is more about his personal reminiscences and thoughts about perfumes. He also gives an interesting list of cool fragrance recipes (accords) in the appendix
Jean Claude Ellena - Perfume: The Alchemy of Scent - by the same author. This book is mostly about the industry.
Denyse Beaulieu - The Perfume Lover: A Personal History of Scent This is an autobiographic book from a woman who reeeealy loves perfumes and managed to convinced a famous perfumer Bertrand Duchafour to make a perfume for her. Sometimes reads more like an erotic novel but a good book.
Perfume guides:
Luca Turin, Tania Sanchez - Perfumes: The A-Z Guide - a famous guide, very quirky and opinionated but their perfume descriptions are great fun to read.
Luca Turin's blog Turin is a famous perfume freak and olfaction scientist, he stopped writing, but the blog posts are available for download.
Chandler Burr - articles Burr is a self-styled perfume art critic, who writes for major newspaper and magazines. His articles make a good intro for a layman.
Barbara Herman - Scent and Subversion: Decoding a Century of Provocative Perfume This is about collecting antique perfumes. Reads a like a slightly edited collection of blog posts (which I think it indeed is).
Tessa Williams - Cult Perfumes A guide to niche perfumes. I suspect most of the text was written by the brands themselves, because sometimes it has a marketing blurb feel to it. Nevertheless it gives a good overview of major players.
The H&R Books (4 Volume Set) Book of Perfume, Fragrance Guide , Feminine Notes, Fragrance Guide, Masculine Notes, Guide to Fragrance Ingredients It doesn't say all that much about each perfumes, just the notes, but what it lacks in depth it makes up in breadth.
Michael Edwards - Fragrances of The World - another huge compendium. Don't have it myself, but looks very solid.
On general olfaction:
Chandler Burr - Emperor of Scent - it's about Luca Turin and his new theory of olfaction. I get the feeling that the technicalities are over the author's head but it's a fun read. Has a lot about fragrances as well.
Luca Turin - The Secret of Scent: Adventures in Perfume and the Science of Smell the book by the man himself. Fun popular science.
Avery Gilbert - What the Nose Knows: The Science of Scent in Everyday Life A collection of popular sketches about olfaction, from Smell-o-vision to the way they train police dogs
Gunter Ohloff, Wilhelm Pickenhagen, Philip Kraft - Scent and Chemistry - I havent read it yet, but it comes with high recommendations.
I also have a bunch of books on perfume making, but these probably should go into a separate topic
Great question. I'll start with a quick shoutout for my book, Style for Fat Guys, as this is dealt with in much greater detail there. Note that the title only uses the word 'fat' as it's the most commonly searched-for term for portly gents trying to find style advice, and I make special note in the book to use more positive/colourful language to describe a gent's girth.
Anyway, the reason you look/feel great in your suits is because they do all the right things to bring an overweight body towards the "ideal" masculine proportions; they give you a strong, structured shoulder - which counteracts the overweight man's naturally slumped/sloped shoulder - and taper in at the waist. This makes you look strong and is exactly what a suit should do.
What do you do for work? It's fine to use sport coats and blazers in a casual style - I personally wear blazers with jeans and a t-shirt, still gives you that same structure but can be worn in a much less rigid way.
Your sister is so awesome! Congratulations for her and this little angel!
When I first started learning about my natural hair I used Chocolate Hair Vanilla Care. It's a great website that is desgined for people in your sisters situation.
Next I recommend she reads The Science of Black Hair. It's the best book about hair i've ever read and will give her a througouh understanding of African American Hair.
Lastly, I've been telling everybody about The Maximum Hydration Method because it's the best thing since sliced bread. The results have really been phenonemal with me. Plus it is cheap and easy to do. Best of luck!
First, in the words of the late George Carlin, "ya gotta wanna". You must first decide that you want a better relationship with yourself. You don't necessarily have to feel it (because depression), but you do have to make that decision, that choice. This is a good time to learn something new, which is: choices don't have to be felt emotionally to be made. We kind of grow up doing things that, on some level, we want to do; part of maturing is learning how to make decisions even if we're not "feeling" it.
I suspect everyone hits a point in their life where they experience depression, which is a good opportunity to do two things:
Also, two hallmarks of depression are:
Second, you have to accept yourself as a valid person. You are valid simply because you exist, because you are a human being. You may not struggle with this, but this is an important part of anyone's foundation of self-esteem. If you never see yourself as valid or worthy, then why bother caring? It's easy to say "I'm not worth it" & shove it all, but that's just a cop-out.
Third, understand perspective. I like to use the movie analogy: right now, we're just seeing a frame, a snapshot, of the movie of your life. This is the part where the hero is going through self-doubt, through a struggle, through difficulty. It's not going to last forever; brighter days are ahead, but right now, you have to hold on & get through this scene.
Fourth, you need to fix your fatigue. This is typically because people with depression create the perfect formula for depression: staying up late, not exercising, not feeding themselves well. Sometimes there are other reasons: PTSD, lyme disease, sleep apnea, etc. Your job is to find the root cause of your fatigue & fix it. Absolutely every single thing you do in life will be a huge chore until you resolve your fatigue issues. I want to be very, very clear about that. You can't feel good if you don't feel good!
Fifth, learn that the secret to life is having good procedures (checklists, or steps to follow) & using them over time. That may sound a little vague, but let me explain: you need to lock in ways to do things, and you need to do them over time. You need to create structure for yourself. As kids, we just run around & have fun all the time. As adult, we have responsibilities, and it stinks lol.
Your job now is to design & build the kind of world you want to live in. Is being exhausted all the time, not wearing makeup, being lazy, feeling unworthy, and feeling hopeless your idea of your ideal world? You're just as free to live under a bridge as you are to life a good & happy life; no one is stopping you from doing either - those are both personal choices.
Depression throws a wrench into things, but life goes on, so you have to decide if you're going to let that stop you & dictate your actions. Learning how to function when you don't feel like it is a huge part of maturing, imo. It's not easy, but it will get you through a lot of situations...when a close family member dies, when you get fired from your job, when you have a baby & don't sleep for months, etc. You need to learn how to function even when you're not feeling it; this is a key life skill!
It's a little bit scary & overwhelming to realize that you're now in charge of literally everything in your life, but at the same time, it's quite liberating, once you realize the power you have: you have the power to select & bring things that bring goodness into your life. You can choose to stay up late & be tired, or choose to go to bed early & feel amazing. That loops back that thing about feeling your choices vs. making choices. Also, if you need permission, then I hereby grant you all of the powers vested in me to make your life AMAZING! Go forth & conquer! Haha.
Sixth, let's put an example of a procedure or a "checklist" into play. You mentioned makeup...let's start small & create a basic routine for you. I'd recommend picking up the book "5-minute face' by Carmindy:
https://www.amazon.com/5-Minute-Face-Quick-Makeup-Guide/dp/0061374415/
Read through the book & develop a quick routine that you can do in just 5 minutes, not hours. That way, even on the days when you're feeling lazy & exhausted, you can still push through for just 5 minutes. Sometimes we just have to go through the motions to get stuff done, even when we don't feel like it.
We can talk more about other stuff next, but first:
Start there, and then let's talk!
Not a bad little guide for how to help heavier guys look a bit snazzy. I think it only works if you have an e-reader.
There are quite a few actually, some are more social history, some are more art/fashion and some are more linking political movements and style. If it is okay here are some links from Goodreads:

Since it returned after going off the pill, it sounds like hormonal acne, right? In my experience, antibiotics (oral and topical) don't really work for this kind of acne.
Do you break out at a certain time during your cycle? If you start to get the really painful pimples right around the same time every month, take an anti-inflammatory before/during that time. I've been trying this and it has mostly stopped breakouts. And a diet full of anti-inflammatory food can really help too. Check out Dr. Perricone's Clear Skin Prescription.
Check out acne.org
Proactiv doesn't seem to be very effective for hormonal acne problems. Your doctor might eventually come around to Accutane after you've tried out the antibiotics, but research it before you go on it because it's pretty serious stuff.
If your mom is into unique funky polishes I would suggest going the indie route with some polishes that have glitter or are just sort of wacky. Model City Polish, Finger Lickin' Lacquer, Nail Pattern Boldness, and Carpe Noctem Cosmetics on Etsy have some great stuff, as does Lucky 13 Lacquer.
I would also suggest getting in contact with /u/kyoti, /u/ninakasper, or /u/riotcoming about possibly making a custom for your Mom. They are three of the shop owners of the above shops I listed.
Beyond that I think a nice basket of supplies, like a glass nail file or two, some acetone if she has natural nails, maybe some cuticle oils from Emerald&Ash in her favorite scents. (I really recommend the Blood Orange with Cinnamon) Check out Amazon for cute nail decals and gems for added bling and as little extras to add into her basket.
I use this book for nail art inspiration. It's easy to follow and has fun designs.
I hope this helps you out and don't forget to wrap everything well in bubble wrap and in really cute tissue paper and maybe some ribbons. Having something to unwrap that's girly and frilly can lift a mood as well as the present you get!!
Update and give us pictures!!
I've been doing the massage techinques that I've read in a book (The Truth About Hair Loss: https://www.amazon.com/TRUTH-about-Hair-Loss-Prevention-ebook/dp/B07BTKM35N), plus what I've seen on YouTube. I don't think there's that much of a deal with how you are massaging, as long as you are moving around your scalp and stimulating blood flow. Still, make sure you are not hurting the scalp, so avoid scratching.
The Science of Black Hair there is also a kindle addition
Wanted to direct your attention to this pretty recent book on the topic:

Thought it might be of interest.
Here is an interesting book for anyone who is into perfumes. Apparently before the authors came along, there was no such thing as really impartial perfume critics who sometimes would write negative reviews, only fawning editorials from magazines who relied on advertising money. The authors have interesting ways to describe all the different perfumes, and are really bitchy and funny about the ones they don't like.
Perfumes: The Guide
Supposedly, no matter what the brand, the actual perfume only costs about 2$, the rest (advertising, bottle, packaging) brings the price up to 60$ or whatever the retail cost is.
Also, since perfume is a luxury good, it is one of those items where you can keep raising the price, and demand will actually increase once it is perceived as a high-end status item. So I am sure a lot of retailers make a conscious choice to set the price of their perfume at $100 or more, even though they would earn a profit at 50$ or something.
In learning to do makeup recently (24 yrs old), this boo was really helpful.

I wanted to look nice but not look overly painted, and I've gotten nice compliments on my appearance.
The first two months I did 30-60 minutes of cardio every other day and started eating less knowing absolutely nothing about fitness and nutrition.
Then i bought this book and some other books about a healthy diet. I followed the routine for 60 days, started counting calories (2000calories, then 2500, now 3000). Today I had my third workout at the gym, looking to get some of that muscle back (I'm as strong as I was with 13 years, ouch)
I'd recommend Ariel Levy's Female Chauvinist Pigs. It's an interesting view of how women are objectifying each other in the way men used to/still do. I also really enjoyed The Beauty Myth.
Thanks for joining the feminist side =D
EDIT: Spelling
What's on your scent to-try list right now?
I think it was this one? I read/skimmed several. Lol.

If products don't seem to help your acne check out Dr. Perricone's skin diet I believe that's the correct book. I saw this book back in 2006 before all the anti-inflammatory diets really started to become popular. Basically this doctor suggested inflammation in the body could cause acne, since he was getting sooo many clients with acne in their 30s who had dry skin or lacked some qualities normally attributed to acne. This is more commonly accepted now, but was a more fringe idea at the time. Anyways, he his clients cut out inflammatory foods (ex: bread, cheese) and found it made a difference. One of my close friends followed the diet for a few years and it helped her acne quite a bit. I imagine even doing a whole 30 type diet would have the same effect.
Maybe it's just my poor reading comprehension or the fact that internet posts don't really convey tone, but when I read a comment like this one, I perceive an insinuation that fat people are unhappy because they have mental problems that cause them to overestimate how shallow other people are, and if they knew how accepting human beings really were, they would perk up immediately.
I believe that's a relatively minor factor. I don't blame people for treating fat people badly, but there is a great deal of evidence that better looking people get treated better and worse looking people get treated worse purely on the basis of their appearance.
This book has sat on my toilet tank for almost a decade now, and I've never tired of reading the reviews in it, which are thoroughly saucy and entertaining. I was delighted to discover, just now, that there's a new edition.
Editing to add: I don't even wear perfumes, but something about reading great writing about them just gets me. I don't know.
How about getting her a book or two on fashion or beauty? For instance, Lauren Conrad (a popular style icon) has two books currently out that she'd probably love and together equal about $20:

For anybody who would like a pop-science rendering of the "vibration" theory of scent, I can recommend Luca Turin's book, The Secret Of Scent
It's (obviously) rather one-sided, but is a pretty good read.
While I normally wouldn't recommend a book, I bought this one and I found it awesome:
http://www.amazon.com/Man-Up-Classic-Skills-Modern/dp/157965391X
>Go to your library and start finding books on "how to dress."
In high school/early college, I found Lauren Conrad's Style and Derek Blasberg's Classy to be very helpful in understanding basics and creating your own sense of style, personality- and wardrobe-wise.
Great, I'm glad I could help out :) As a young college-student in my 20's, I also find that many sites cater to older people. You have a similar body type to mine so I'm going to draw from what clothing works best for me.
Taking a look at your pinterest, you have some great outfits! I'll talk about my two favorite outfits and how you can create several looks from the basic pieces in each outfit.
First, http://pinterest.com/pin/189643834278830756/
This is a great summer outfit! A bright boxy top, cuffed shorts and strappy sandals with boho/tribal accessories.
-The boxy top is great because it can go with shorts, skirts, ect.. and is a beautiful, bright and trendy color. You can go for a polyester blend shirt such as this one from Forever 21. I like this blend because it's a little more elegant than plain cotton but it's not shiny and satiny.
-Cuffed shorts. A great pair of jean shorts can make or break your summer outfits. Look for shorts than have a bit more length in the leg that most short shorts, that way you can have room to keep the same cuff or roll them up a bit more, here's another great pair from Forever 21.
Now, let's talk about how the boxy top how it can be versatile in your closet.
-The boxy top can be worn with cuffed jean shorts, with solid or printed trouser style shorts such as these
or a variety of trendy skirts. Here are some suggestions:
-High-Lo Skirt
-Print
-Maxi Skirt. (You can go with solid, pleated, print, really anything!)
-The bootcut jeans you already own
-Pencil Skirt or any kind of Bodycon skirt
-PLUS: You can wear your cardigan over this blouse on a chilly day or into the fall/winter.
So I think one or two boxy shirts perhaps one in a solid bright color and another in a basic black or white could be very versatile in your closet. Printed boxy shirts can go a long way as well, just pair the shirt with a solid bottom.
--------
Next: http://pinterest.com/pin/189643834278830766/
A plain cotton tee (I can tell it's from Abercrombie just from the label peaking out a bit ;P) a colorful scarf, boot-cut jeans and cute Toms.
Great! You already own a pair of boot cut jeans, so all you need is a good plain t-shirt (You can use one of those boxy tops I recommended) and scarf. I find cute scarfs at Forever 21 and Target all the time so those might be some good places to start at. Anything with any kind of print that you fall in love with will work. You can go for leopard, aztec, tribal, the possibilities are endless!
Here's one I liked from F21: Scarf
-Cross-body Purse. Super trendy and you can find virtually in any store.
-Shoes: the Toms featured on this pin are perfect, they are a little more elegant than the average slip on shoe and would look great with shorts, jeans or skirts. You can also opt for flats or strappy sandals. Wedges would also look great with this outfit.
-PLUS: Add a chunky cardigan and some knee-high boots and you have an outfit that works well into Fall.
--------
Here are some examples: Blue Ikat Skirt - Floral - Printed Maxi - Solid Maxi
Payless Flat Sandals (Payless has really impressed me in their variety of fashionable shoes, you can find some great styles here that look just like department store brands) - Taupe Flats - Nine West Wedges
------------
Accessories
-Skinny belt that can work with any of your bottoms, I suggest something in gold or brown
-A cross-body bag
-A good scarf. Once again, it's an accessory that works in any season and can brighten up any outfit
-1-2 statement necklaces.
-Earrings or Bracelets as you see fit
Lastly, an AMAZING book that can guide you through fashion looks, beauty and more is Lauren Conrad's Style book. I haven't bought it personally but I looked through a great chunk of it and it is flat-out amazing! She is one of my style icons.
Hope all of this helps!
I can't be gifted digital unfortunately but I thought I would throw my hat in the ring with this diy book that I really want! Used is completely fine by me, sometimes you get books with great tips written in the margins :D
I see what you mean, but I don't have the knowledge to apply this to my wardrobe in general to manipulate proportion in a successful manner. I found this though which seems to have some good information on the topic.
All of these are on loan from my library network and on Amazon.
Coming to My Senses; A Story of Perfume, Pleasure, and an Unlikely Bride, by Alyssa Harad. The book that got me into this. An account of how author got into it, recommended for those interested in niche.
What the Nose Knows: The Science of Scent in Everyday Life Avery Gilbert
Scent and Subversion: Decoding A Century Of Provocative Perfume by Barbera Herman
Fragrant; The Secret Life of Scent Mandy Aftel. Author trivia; before Aftel was a perfumer, she was a psychotherapist.
A Natural History of the Senses by Diane Ackerman.
The Secret of Scent: Adventures in Perfume and the Science of Smell Author Luca Turin explores the two competing theories of smell. Is scent determined by molecular shape or molecular vibrations?
Available sometime in June I believe, the new edition of The Perfume Guide by Luca Turin and Tania Sanchez will be available.
Here's some goodness from Instagram from Mandy Aftel
This is $13.05! http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/1440545170/ref=aw_ls__4?colid=33TESZHJT1R64&coliid=I1HETQIRSUN1GQ
Hey thanks for sharing, just added some of your items into my wishlist! :)
This one (Man Up!: 367 Classic Skills for the Modern Guy) looks great, I am getting it today hehe.
i'm sorry, i thought that challenge was very popular.
you do a lot of body-weight exercises for all body parts like 3-4 times a week. in most of the sessions, the time between the excercises is limited to keep the pauses as short as possible. every week there is an evaluation session where you can test your skills and might move up to a harder "level" of the exercise.
This is the book: https://www.amazon.com/90-Day-Bodyweight-Challenge-Men/dp/3868837736

Your hair sounds exactly like mine (when I wasn't sure how to take care of it). Does your hair end up curly or wavy when it's wet? 'Cause then you probably have curly or wavy hair.
After I finally stopped trying to straightening my hair, I spent a lot of time experimenting with this and that. After a long time I've found a few things that work really, really well.
This is a really good leave in conditioner, but you might want to avoid the Silk Elements shampoo entirely. It cleans pretty well, but it dries out your hair way too much; the chemicals are too harsh in it. So instead, I use this. It's sulfate, phosphate and paraben free (all things you want to avoid, especially when you have wavy/curly hair, but found in many shampoos), and also a little pricey, but when I used it for the first time, I could feel the difference -it felt so much better to even use, let alone look at. I'm on my first bottle still (it's a little over halfway done) and it's been a month (my hair reaches the small of my back and it's very thick), so I'm thinking it'll last even longer for you, assuming that you have way shorter hair since you're a guy. And lastly, I use this once a week. I don't know if the masque is necessary for you because I'm (again) guessing your hair is shorter than mine because you're a guy, and therefor healthier because it's not as long (the longer your hair is, the weaker it is at the bottom because it's been there for a while, therefore more subject to natural wear-'n-tear).
You can also swing by the library and pick up some books on curly hair, too (that's how I got started). When I was still learning the ropes, I found this one, and even though this book is more a guide on really curly hair (I have more wavy hair than anything), I definitely picked up a few tips from it.
I hope this helped you a bit. Your hair is a part of yourself as much as your DNA, unique and unlike any other's, so cherish and bring out the best in it! Good luck on your future hair endeavors~!
You should read The Beauty Myth. I'm very average as far as looks go and have been plagued by the same exact thoughts as you, and I've found this to be a really empowering read.
Aber gerne:
Zum Anfang würde ich dir diese abgepackten Salat, die kleingeschnitten und gewaschen im Kühlregal stehen empfehlen. Die liegen beim Rewe zwischen 90 Cent und 1.20. Dann kannst Du Dir eigentlich alles mögliche an Gemüse holen was Du magst.

Erst mal alles aufmerksam lesen bevor man loslegt.
Viel Erfolg!
Review Excerpt:
"I already knew that the beauty standards placed on women were unfair, etc., but like many I still found a lot of that to be really hard to let go. The Beauty Myth helped me to let go. I can’t say that I no longer have “I’m ugly” and “I’m fat” moments, but I can tell you that they’ve been dramatically reduced in a way that I never could have imagined. Can’t recommend this one more.

Absolutely. I'm multiracial as well so I've got a good idea of what you're going through as far as getting it to look the way you want.
My best piece of advice for you is to read Curly Like Me by Teri Laflesh, it's a godsend. If you're not interested in reading the entire thing, the most helpful chapters are 3 & 4 on shampooing & conditioning detailing the best method to use for keeping your hair looking good all week. It's what I did years ago when I started growing mine, and I've followed what I learned from it ever since with great results.
My more in-depth routine:
Stop here
If you want kinkier/chunky curls (1):
This leaves the hair more coily and somewhat intertwined if that makes sense. Thicker coils and they hang heavier.
If you want more defined, individual, lengthier, larger volume curls (2):
This will really showcase your hair length more. Each individual curl will be easier to see, and not coiled together with other curls. It does take up more volume, and in my own experience doesn't last as long as method 1 after washing.
With both routines your hair will still look great even days after washing. If you're wondering why the conditioner doesn't get rinsed out, I'll tell you why. It can't do it's job entirely if it's down the drain. The purpose of leaving the conditioner in your hair is to "seal" your individual curl strands together. This brings many benefits, such as:
Hope this helps. If you need anything else lemme know
Hey Swiss, What do you think of Ray Peat's and Danny Roddy's advice http://www.amazon.com/Hair-Like-Fox-Bioenergetic-Pattern-ebook/dp/B00GYX6QXC to take grams of Aspirin a day, with their lower PUFA protocol, to heat up the metabolism - when Aspirin has been shown to substantially lower PGE2?
Absolutely ridiculous. Aspirin will kill your PGE2 as well. And lack of PGE2 is just as deadly as overexpression of PGD2. As demonstrated by the germans for example with their Certirizine experiment.
In fact aspirin is so strong it can even inhibit your muscle growth after training. Yes muscle growth is in part mediated by PGE2.
It's a book by Mark Lauren, there's one for men and women on German Amazon, unfortunately only the male version in the US for some reason:

There's this one however, for women: http://www.amazon.com/Body-You-Guide-Womens-Fitness/dp/0345528972/
I would try to overlap the interests, at least partially. Nail art would be the best way to intersect pink/red. Something like a DIY Nail Art book and a set of nail varnish would be a great first step. Maybe with colors where she can try out to do Hobbit related nail art like the ones here.
For Sex and the City (and again pink/red):
This is outside of the scope of the budget but something similar to the Louboutin nail polish might be something to consider if you can find it cheaper. Or [this].(http://www.amazon.com/Boston-Warehouse-Jeweled-Shaped-Polish/dp/B00L21PGQE/)

Haven't read it but here's a link to a book by a guy who was also trying to halt his hair loss with diet using a paleo based approach. For $0.99 I don't see a good reason not to give it a read.
You don't need Accutane. You need an extreme lifestyle overhaul. I'm talking NO sugar or dairy or refined carbs. EVER. Nothing but whole wheat, a shitload of omega-3's and as many fruits and vegetables as you can stuff in your mouth. Salmon is the best kind of meat. Water is your only friend. This along with exercise and all you'll need is soap to wash your face.
Take it from me. I had cystic acne for years and my girlfriend recommended this book. Changed my fucking life.
