My father uses an ozone generator too. It keeps the bugs away. Be careful, because it makes things rust and die EXTRA FAST.

Use it after the house is dry. 24 hours should be long enough to kill most living things. Three unstable oxygen molecules (ozone) are great at killing mold!
I think that it smells like lightning and stinkbugs.

Wonderful post. Excellent research. Thank you.

Our world will never be the same again, as we start to wake up in large numbers to what TPTB have been doing to us.

But you have to start somewhere.

So on an individual level, here's what I suggest for staying as healthy as possible while we work on a larger scale to address the problems you've mentioned:

here are tips i can add to the pile; get an accurate remote thermostat or humidistat for your window A/C units.

http://www.amazon.com/Lux-Heating-Cooling-Programmable-Thermostat/dp/B000E7NYY8

thermostats built into most A/C units are cheap, inaccurate and cycle your unit on/off unnecessarily.

what i do is plug an A/C rated appliance extension cord into this thermostat, then my A/C into the extension cord so the distance between the A/C and the thermostat is now across the room. this separate thermostat helps keep your A/C unit from cycling too much by moderating the temperature where you actually are in the room.

when you plug your A/C into this thermostate, set the A/C thermostate on lowest and fan on always. that way when the remote thermostate goes on the A/C will always be on Cool+Fan no matter what the temperature is.

some new A/C units have temperature sensing thermostat built into the remote control that you keep accross the room from the A/C unit window, so look for this feature when you are buying a new window unit as it should help you be more comfortable at higher ambient temperatures without your A/C cycling too much;

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0036WTWCQ (i do not own this A/C, i just link it as an example)

.

if you really want to save money on A/C, you could set your unit to go on/off based on HUMIDITY, not temperature. to do that you will need to buy (and apply the same way as the above a remote thermostat);

http://www.amazon.com/DAYTON-1UHG2-Dehumidifier-Control-Plug/dp/B001OLVNU0

so when the room Humidity gets uncomfortably above 50%, only then will you let the A/C kick on more for it's dehumidification ability, then it's cooling power. once the air is lower in humidity you should be fine with nothing more than a box fan to circulate air against your skin for cooling.

.

if you live in a dry heat zone, combine a fan with a evaporative wick humidifier. as the water evaporates it takes heat energy out of the fan blown air and moderately cools the room. the added humidity will also make you feel more comfortable in the dry air. this approach is commonly known as a desert cooler. evaporative wicks can last all season if you use a capful of bacteriostatic solution in the water. to clean a wick, simply allow it to run dry for a few hours.

Oh wow, a question I'm fully qualified to answer! I have 2 Oregon Scientific air purifiers plugged into 2 WiFi outlets (obviously ZWave or Zigbee outlets would work as well). When the outlet is turned on the air purifier turns on and it turns on to speed it was on last. I didn't know this purifier did this prior to purchasing, I just bought it because it was on sale at the time and I got lucky. Link to the purifier: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07CSKQF53

It generates ozone (o3). It’s a highly volatile molecule, it kills bacteria and eliminates smells pretty good. If you have fire damage of water damage in your house, company’s that fix it will usually use an ozone generator to get the smell out.

I ordered mine on amazon, it was like 35$. I vacuumed my car ( esp the seats). Ran a extension chord through the window and used painters tape to seal the gap in the window.. ran the ozone generator for about an hour.

There’s still a very mild smel, I wanna pull the seats, vacuum under them and just do a better, deeper vacuum job. Then do another hour or two ozone treatment. I think that’ll totally get rid of the smell... and shampoo to get all the stains out of the carpet while Doing it🤘

If he is a decent fellow, he will try to make you happy. Two ways he might go:

He could set up an ionizer and/or ozone generator in the crawlspace:

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01N3JIWDD

Or he could try an enzyme treatment. This is often used in kennels to control the odors:

This is not an overnight treatment. It takes 48 to 72 hours to break down the odor causing compounds. But I have had very good luck with it.

Weird.
I have this one it works awesome especially for small rooms. Ozone smell goes away and it just smells clean. https://www.amazon.com/Commercial-Generator-Purifier-Deodorizer-Eliminator/dp/B07WSSY8YK/ref=sr_1_5?keywords=ozone+generator&qid=1570802230&sr=8-5

Ozone. That is the only real way that doesn't mask .. it basically nukes everything. If you live in a major metro area a treatment costs about $100. Or you can purchase a minimalist setup to have on hand for future use. I use mine whenever I need to remove an odor a house/vehicle. 100% satisfied.

I have a roommate with a really smelly dog (apparently, anal glands get all over your stuff) and what I've done is get a plug in deodorizer and a exhaust fan. We leave all our windows open now and we put a screen on the door so we can leave that open too. For awhile, I really thought about just moving out of my own house.

Or buy one, I have this one and it's great to have around. I bought it after an Airbnb guest used a condo I manage to throw a massive party. The condo had the worst smell I've ever smelled (pot, dog piss/crap, spilled beer, vomit, cigarettes, rotting pizza and more all rolled into one). The ozone generator helped a lot. We still had to paint and clean the ducts and carpet but I'm convinced the ozone generator was worth having around. If you buy it you can run it regularly and if you do have to paint you can use it to help clear out the paint smell.

If I can get the invisible dander from the air to the floor, that would solve 90% of my problem as I mop like a maniac every day for an hour. I just couldn't get the invisible particles down to the floor. If this can do that, I will definitely buy one.

We bought this ozone generator about two years ago and have been very happy with it. Our home is about 2,000sq ft with a fairly open floor plan. A single 2 hour cycle usually eliminates any odors in the home.

Our reason for purchasing one was my girlfriend and I were fairly heavy smokers and wanted to kill the stench when we had non-smokers over, so I'm not sure how much this will help your situation.

For the moisture issue, you may want to look into a dehumidifier. We own this one. It's pretty poorly rated on the Lowe's website, but we're happy with it. It saved us when our ac went out for over a week during the hot humid Missouri summer. We were able to get the humidity inside down to 30%.

You can accuratly monitor your apartments humidity with this cheap home comfort monitor.

Hope this helps!

Cost isn't an issue? Drop $100 on an ionic air purifier.

u/FartingtonFartsworth · 1 pointr/lifehacks

This may not completely solve your problem, but it may help. I have a cigar room with a venting system and I use an Ionic Pro to cut the lingering odors. It takes a full day or so but it cuts the smell on the drapery and upholstery. Hope this helps. http://www.amazon.com/Ionic-Pro-Air-Purifier/dp/B0000DC2ZH/ref=sr_1_4?s=home-garden&ie=UTF8&qid=1408215890&sr=1-4&keywords=Ionic+Pro

I run this evap cooler if it's high temps & low RH: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0000D8EJZ/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I like you can set the designated RH and it will run into that's reached. Though I did notice the built-in hygrometer isn't properly calibrated.

I have had four cats in my lifetime. It is in my experience that cats under one year old just have smellier poop. After about one year, it is much easier to take and should not smell as bad. Also your cats personality will solidify as to how they will probably act the rest of their lives.

I would suggest getting a plastic bag just for cat poop and use that to pick up the poop any time you can smell it (besides twice a day). Also, I have had friends who have used de-ionizer fans (like below). I have not personally used them, but I know she said it made a huge difference.

http://www.amazon.com/FIVE-STAR-FS8088-Purifier-Ionizer/dp/B004I8MTCM/ref=sr_1_1?s=home-garden&ie=UTF8&qid=1421789998&sr=1-1&keywords=deionizer

good luck!
