1. Very sharp razor, ideally brand new. Dollar Shave Club changed my LIFE. Take it slow, and pull skin taught where you can. I always sit down in the tub to get a better angle, too. Shaving creams have never helped me (and I definitely don't want to get any in my lady bits), so no recommendations there.

Ok so the solution to razor bumps: Kill germs + exfoliate

You can do this in many different ways. There are lots of products out there (TendSkin, Bliss Ingrown Hair pads, etc) that are to treat razor bumps and they are all generally a mixture of alcohol and a chemical exfoliant (some type of AHA/BHA) You can try these products but Ive found it much easier to use my own.

My process:

1. Cleanse/exfoliate my legs with CeraVe SA Cleanser and a scrubby glove
   
2. Shave with a clean razor and a nice shave gel. I use Aveeno Sensitive Skin
   
3. After shower I use Witch Hazel toner w/ Alcohol to kill germs and soothe microscopic cuts
   
4. Follow that up with my CeraVe SA Body Lotion
   
5. MOST IMPORTANT STEP: Is to repeat exfoliation DAILY until your next shave. This means applying your AHA/BHA product each day.
   
   Immediate bumps are caused by germs getting into your pores, which could come from your razor, your towel, your shower, really anything. This is why sanitizing with some type of alcohol immediately after shaving is important.
   
   Bumps which appear later (especially next day after shave which was always when it happened for me) are caused by the hairs inability to push back through the surface of the skin properly. This is where exfoliating comes into play. Exfoliating after shaving and each day until your next shave helps the hairs come back through the skin with minimal irritation.
   
   You can use any combo of products to kill germs and exfoliate. Ive used just pure alcohol and stridex pads before. The stridex pads work really well for this, actually. But I like using the SA lotion instead since its a lot more moisturizing and seems to work just fine. If you understand what you are trying to accomplish, then it doesnt really matter the products you use to achieve it.

For anyone wondering they're using a lubricant known as Elegance shave gel. They sell it at my local barber. It works really well but dries relatively fast.


So it's not wetshaving, its meant to be used in barber shops instead of traditional lather.

Hopefully someone else can speak to laser hair removal (I'm super curious myself as I've heard a lot of mixed things) but in the meantime while you are pricing things out and the summer approaches, I have a few suggestions. I also have thick dark leg hair and am prone to bad ingrown hairs. I use a Japanese exfoliating towel with some bath gel on my legs/bikini line before I shave, shave, then exfoliate again with the towel/more bath gel. And once out of the shower, I rub this magic on the areas I'm prone to getting ingrowns. It's more or less completely eliminated my ingrown hair problem. If you haven't tried either it might be worth the $15 just to see if it'll help a bit before you can get the laser removal.

Shaving oil.

Something like King of Shaves oil is great as it really gives your razor a glide to reduce the 'neck burn' you're experiencing.

Hey! So I used to have a somewhat similar problem. Everybody is different, but I found that switching to a single bladed safety razor helped me stop breaking out when shaving my face and neck. My understanding of it is that the more blades on a razor, the "closer" the shave. The problem with this is that if your shave is too "close" your razor can actually shave your hair to below your skin line. The hair then has to grow back out from underneath the skin line, and sometimes has trouble, resulting in ingrown hairs, razor burn, and the like.

Some things I would try:



-Switching razors: If not a safety razor (which is a pretty big switch), try switching to a double bladed razor, maybe something like This.

-Changing how you shave: Try shaving more lightly. Try to not press down too hard on your skin when you shave. On the first pass ALWAYS shave with the grain of your hair.

-Using shaving cream: From your post it sounds like you use normal hand/body soap to shave your face. I would highly recommend against that. Not only is it not great for lubrication, it also dries out your skin, and results in your pores overproducing oil, eventually leading to greasier skin. Buy some shaving cream or shaving soap. I personally use Gillette shaving cream for sensitive skin. Here's a pack of six, so don't buy this at first, just buy a single one to test it out and see if it works well for you, but know that you can buy this stuff in bulk online and can cheaply get enough to last you for years.

Honestly, I would go with a Gillette Slim Adjustable. You can get them from 20-50 bucks on eBay and they are a razor that will last for ever. I've got nothing but great things to say about them. Being adjustable if you have a trouble spot dial it down and viola. Here is one for 28 bucks
I cannot recommend this razor enough. It shaves like a Gillette Fatboy but at a fraction of the cost.

Tube is fine. I've used Proraso green, Speick and Jack Black Beard Lube they all did ok. Still have them for traveling but at the house I foam up. I get a much better shave and less irritation if I use Checke and Speake pucks. YMMV It really doesn't take me that much longer in the morning to make a lather than out of a tube.

NIVEA's shave gel is fantastic. It's what I use when I'm traveling or when I need a quick shave and don't have time to whip up some lather.

C.O. Bigelow Shave Foam, on the other hand, is complete garbage.

You can do whatever works for you. There is nothing about a DE razor that prevents it from working with Barbasol canned foam or Gillette foaming gel. That said, I think it's fair to say that most of the folks here enjoy using soap and brush for a variety of reasons.

Personally, my progression went something like this:

• Gillette cartridges and Gillette foaming gel

Usually better to use body razor/trimmer (face hair and body hair are different), but a regular one will "get the job done".

I got a personal shaver to get what was left, use with talc (optional)

If you want your hole beight and shiny like a porn star's ass, bumper brite supposedly lightens the hole for a more even/smoothed out skin tone

  It's not easy as I thought... I have small cuts and nicks all over. I hope the experience gets better as I improve my technique.

Try some beard lube - it's less of a hassle than going the whole shave oil + badger brush + cream/soap but gives comparable results (particularly when you shower shave). The 6oz tube lasts me over a year of every other day shaving.

Throw away the Gillette shit. Instead, get a safety razor with DE blades. You'll find those from Haniffa. If you have sensitive skin, I can recommend this

Wet your face. Then apply lubricant. Shave with the grain. Optional: lubricate again, this time, shave against the grain. Then rinse. Remember, let the blade do the work. Don't apply too much pressure. The angling of the blade against the face is also crucial. A well developed technique can leave your face smooth as baby's bottom without nicks/irritation.

Go to your local drug store and buy a Gilette Mach3 or similar and some shaving gel or cream. You can also get some aftershave lotion; personally I've never found one I really like so I usually go without it, but it can help with irritation or dryness.

With your skin wet, squirt some gel into your hand and rub it onto your face. It will lather or foam up a bit. Don't be shy here, get a good amount on.

Take the razor and drag it slowly across your skin along the direction of hair growth. There will be a good bit of shaving cream and hair stuck to the razor after each stroke, so rinse it off frequently. I find I usually have to use my finger to push some of the hair out from between the blades. Repeat until your face is clean. You can also pull the razor against the grain for a closer shave, but you're more likely to cut yourself doing this. I'd recommend shaving along the grain for the first few times until you get a feel for it.

If you do cut yourself, just tear off a tiny piece of toilet paper and stick it to the cut.

When you're done, dry off with a towel and apply aftershave if you want. Make sure you dry off your razor blades too, it will help them stay sharp and last longer. Replace the blade whenever shaving becomes more difficult or painful, roughly every couple of weeks depending how often you need to shave.

It's basically just an AHA/BHA roll-on, but I would absolutely not use it on my face (it also has alcohol in it). Great for legs though!

It really helps preventing ingrown hairs. You can get tend skin in a royal blue bottle from Wal-Mart. I think that and the link I posted are more or less the same thing. but I hate ingrown belly hairs! So i thought I'd share.

I struggled with ingrown hairs so badly until ten years ago when a friend introduced me to a product called PFB Vanish. I cannot possibly explain how well this stuff works. I had tried everything. I know I'm late, but I had to log-in to help you, because the other answers were not that great. I've spent a lot of years and money struggling with the same issue when I was younger until I got this product. I know it's expensive, and will sting the first few times, but it will be life changing. If you use a strait razor, trying using electric for a not so close shave in combo with the PFB. Also, before you shave again, let this heal completely first, which will allow you time for shipping the PFB and finding an electric razor.

I've never used it, but I've read about lot of people using Elegance, which sounds like it would be up your alley.

Search "Iraq barbers" on this subreddit, and it often gets recommended.

I've had trouble forever with Razor Burn / Razor bumps. I've tried just about every product out there. Here's what I've settled in on:

1. Make sure you're shaving with the grain.
   
2. Consider an electric razor. the Norelco Sensotouch 3D does a decent job but nothing will be as smooth as a blade.
   
3. Jack Black Beard Lube Use this instead of your shaving cream. Great stuff.
   
4. Use some kind of abrasive scrub afterwards. The goal is to get rid of ingrown hairs. The beard lube worked so well I've stuck with Jack black on this one and really like their Face Scrub
   
5. Use a moisturizer of your choice.
   
   The only other thing that worked at all was Tend Skin but I hated the stuff. It's salicylic acid in an alcohol solution. If that sounds painful to put on your face after shaving that's because it IS. It also stinks. And leaves a white powder on your skin. And drys it to hell and back.
   
   Fewer razor bumps but my girlfriend (now wife) wouldn't come close because my neck stunk and tasted bad to kiss. Stick with the jack black stuff.

Srs Why would it darken them?

I use it once or twice a week like I would on my face to avoid over exfoliation. When doing bikini area I don't put it anywhere near sensitive parts to avoid irritation. Yes, doing it every day would be harsh though! Many ingrown hair treatments you'd find at the store contain salicylic acid and/or glycolic acid (such as this or this). So I figured I'd just use what I already have instead of shelling out extra money for something to do the same thing a tub of Stridex can but for less.

This stuff has worked pretty well for me.

I would recommend bring your preferred razor, and grabbing a bottle of Jack Black Beard Lube. I just picked up a bottle myself a few weeks ago to use with my shavette and I really love it. It doesn't require a bowl or brush, just pour out a bit and rub it on your face. It goes on clear which is the main reason I got it, then you can see everything while you shave. It washes off easily from my face and my razor, and it really has helped with irritation I used to get.

Is it the best shaving cream/lotion out there? I'm not sure, but I've tried a bunch of different shave soaps and creams and this is on par with some of my favorites. The fact I don't have to mess with a bowl and brush is a major plus, and the fact it goes on clear is even better.

Clean the inside of the visor really well. Take a small amount of shaving gel and put it on a dry white cloth. Rub the gel into the the inside of the visor until you can't see the gel anymore. This thin layer of soapy material will keep fog from binding to the surface of the visor.

You may want to shop about though - it's not for everyone, and a lot of people use this as a 'base' under shaving foam.

Shaving soap is also VERY good (applied with a brush), so you may want to try that - the cost is significantly greater though.

I started shaving with a Dovo straight razor shavette about 8 years ago. For blades Merkur or Feather are recommended, I'm on Feather at the moment.

I went with a Basel haired shaving brush and good shaving soap for a while but have found the shaving oils like King of Shaves work best for me.

as far as shaving cream goes i highly reccomend this Aveeno theraputic stuff

it's pretty cheap compared to practically every other shaving cream out there (especially stuff marketed towards consumers with sensitive skin) and it actually works in helping reduce ingrown hairs and rashes.

As for razors, if you have problems with ingrown hairs, definitely try a safety razor, or even a straight razor (if you want to deal with the time and effort of keeping it sharpened).

I work as a fry cook so my face is almost always sweaty, greasy, and gross by the end of the workday, and switching to a safety razor + that Aveeno shave cream is a godsend. It's pretty much ended my problems with ingrown hairs from shaving.

Only thing that's ever worked for me.

Also, important to note: NEVER put any cream or moisturizing lotion on the bikini area directly after shaving. It clogs the pores immediately and causes ingrown hairs. This took me years to learn, because I always moisturize my legs after shaving, and that's fine, so it's counterintuitive. But the bikini area is a different beast.

from your description it sounds like maybe the hair pores got infected. When you shave, you are creating little tiny cuts in the skin that are open to bacteria, dirt etc. as I'm sure you may already know. ANY time you are shaving a sensitive are make sure you are using a brand new razor and shaving cream formulated for sensitive skin only! This product has been my lifesaver. Used to get really terrible ingrown hairs and bumps on my lady bits, now not a single one. Ease into it though, it dried my skin out at first when I was using it once a day, now I use it 2-3x a week, especially after I shave.

Red/pinkish pigment on and around nose, under eyes and chin area. palms of my hands have been red/pink too for as long as I can remember so wondering if it could just be the way my skin is or something. It also might get worse as weather gets colder but I can't say for sure.

Skin type: No clue. I have a dry/flaky scalp if I don't use head an shoulders a few times a week though.

I didn't have any issues with itchy-ness luckily, But I do seem to be getting razor burn as I have little bumps on the back of my head/forehead/where my hair used to be before it started receding lol. But I also use this Nivea Aftershave - It has been awesome and takes away any stinging after shaving. You should be able to get it just about anywhere. I've seen it at Rite Aid , Target and Walmart for sure. I also use this Nivea Shave Gel Neither of those products have alcohol in them so it helps with dry skin issues.

  To be fair, a few of these are actually pretty decent. The Kiss My Face and Pacific Shaving Company Caffeinated creams are actually pretty good and work well with or without a brush (though better with a brush). These two are also pretty easy to find at retail, almost every retailer I found that carries Cremo also offers at least one of these two.
  
  Having said that, using a brush with a traditional soap or cream will almost always result in a nicer lather than any of these products.

Gillette even has Sensitive gel with Aloe in tube form that's intended for wetshavers. It's meant to be applied with a brush. It's marketed in Asia, but should be available on Amazon/eBay.

After lots of experimentation, I use Aveeno shave gel and Venus razors, which have kept the discomfort lowest for me. I shave like every 3 days and use Tend Skin on the ingrown hairs.

Shaving itself: turn on the bath, douse legs with hot water, apply shaving cream, and shave. If it's been a while, I'll pre-trim with a trimmer. Afterwards I use Dove men's aftershave cream.

We'd probably have an easier time offering suggestions if we knew what kind of stuff hasn't worked for you, so we can avoid suggesting similar products (and maybe help figure out any common ingredients that are setting off your skin). For example, some shaving aids have menthol, which can be irritating/uncomfortable, as it creates a weird hot-cold effect—it's the main ingredient in Icy Hot. Others have aloe, which is a soothing agent, so perhaps you could try one that has aloe? I know canned shaving products also tend to have alcohol, and it's usually not irritating, but perhaps you're sensitive to it.

Also, are you using creams, or gels? I've been shaving my head with Gilette Fusion Ultra Sensitive Shave Gel for half a year now, with good results. I use Headslick to clean up the temples, as it goes on mostly clear, but that has menthol and might be irritating to you.

I transitioned to wet shaving about 4 years ago, and now you'll have to pry my Merkur Progress out of my cold dead hands (a great transitional razor because the blade depth is adjustable!).

I love these feather blades. $4.50 for 10. I get at least 10 shaves out of each one, so that's less than a nickle per shave.

Compare to what I was using before: Gillette Mach3 Base Cartridges $29 for 12. I used to get about 10 shaves out of each one as well, which comes to $.24 per shave, or 5x more expensive.

There is less of an economic effect with shaving cream: soap (I'd guess about 100 shaves from this at ~$.09 per shave) versus canned gel (I'd guess 40 shaves worth at also ~$.09 per shave). But, I much prefer lathering up my face with soap/brush than hands/gel, and Proraso smells great, like you're getting an old school barber shave in Italy.

Depending on how your skin reacts to shaving, the technique can vary. I cannot shave at all because the irritation is unbearable. It isn't as bad if I go in the same direction as the hair, but that doesn't get as close. Some people are fine, but I end up with vast amounts of ingrown hair that takes months to recover. I found that paying an esthetician to wax it for me is much much better.

Also: PFB Vanish applied before either waxing or shaving, then used twice a day after/during regrowth really does keep the skin baby smooth.

If you are going to shave, use a new, good quality razor and keep the skin pulled tight for each pass. First few tries may cause some nicks, but with practice you'll get better. I think it's easiest to sit baddha konasana style with a mirror propped on my feet than to try it standing in the shower. Experiment a bit and you will find what works best for you. Like I said, I eventually resigned to getting waxed every month, though finding someone to wax a male wasn't the easiest at first. It seems like it's getting more common, though.

So, this is a weird one, but if you have the room/if you're outdoors, this is the funnest thing in the world to play with! Get one can for each of them and then let them spray it aaaaaall over a nice clear surface. Encourage them to make it all fluffy and then draw their favorite things with their fingers in the foam. You'll be the coolest aunt ever, guaranteed. It worked like a charm when I babysat.

You can't go wrong with Pokeballs, and these ones are soft, so they're great for games of catch with lil' kiddos. This, this and tell him to splash his face with warm water first. The entire time I’ve used those, I haven’t gotten a razer cut once.

I used a Norelco beard trimmer for the longer stuff to keep my beard looking trim and groomed. I use a mach 3 turbo razor to shape the areas around my beard with Jack Black beard lube. It's better than shaving cream and gives my neck and cheeks a very smooth feel.

Just make sure the neckline of your beard sort of coincides with the shape of your jawline.
