For a kid who is just getting in to it? The bar for "acceptable" is pretty damned low. Amazon that shit for $40 bucks.

You can always upgrade to something nicer if they actually enjoy it.
Love this one! https://smile.amazon.com/VTech-KidiBeats-Drum-Frustration-Packaging/dp/B071Y71Y3J/ref=sr_1_5?crid=Y087H4N2FI0B&keywords=drum+set+for+kids&qid=1574784588&sprefix=drum+set%2Caps%2C143&sr=8-5
My daughter has it and loves it.
You laugh, but I actually did it. Twice. I got this thing When my nephew turned three, and this monster when he turned five.
He's turning 7 next month. Not sure if I should spring the next one now, or wait until the early teenage years.
Amazon I believe. It's Coco themed.
Edit: I am pretty sure it is this one.
Haha I have ideas but they’re not entirely for newborns:
music activity table
Ikea play tunnel
Matching tent
bouncing horse
Pillow Pets
Here’s some just awful toys my daughter has gotten:
Evil duck
Demonic Sesame Street toy
thanks I hate it talking bear
Pretty much any V Tech toy to be honest.
I’d have a harder time naming toys my daughter actually enjoys to be honest. :|

Terrible triggers, plastic heads with practically no rebound, terrible onboard practice songs. Not even a kick drum. 3/10.
Buy his kid this: https://www.amazon.com/Musical-Violin-Battery-operated-Hey-Play/dp/B06XKR21QJ/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1494758577&sr=8-4&keywords=Toy+violin
When the string is touched, it plays one note constantly until let go. It's painfully loud and just drones on and on.
[More than that for 20 bucks. It's not unbelievable at all.] (https://www.amazon.com/iPlay-iLearn-Instruments-Percussion-Tambourine/dp/B07MDYBGB2/ref=mp_s_a_1_23_sspa?adgrpid=56361972219&gclid=Cj0KCQjw3uboBRDCARIsAO2XcYDw_bawed36XfoJiUrzdjsDfCucNYjGeK87Iie12xTR3BpIUm9v6QQaAlAUEALw_wcB&hvadid=274673227611&hvdev=m&hvlocphy=9028071&hvnetw=g&hvpos=1t1&hvqmt=b&hvrand=5936235510114192386&hvtargid=aud-649564993678%3Akwd-296756139830&hydadcr=26681_9481159&keywords=childrens+instrument+set&qid=1561988130&s=gateway&sr=8-23-spons&psc=1)
I used to rock this fuckin puppy. Do I count?
My personal favorite is the kazoobie wazoo kazoo, It's loud, but still sounds nice. Another good choice is the Schylling tin kazoo, which is a nice metal option. If you're going for something loud and annoying, which i assume you are, considering the choice of kazoo, i would say the wazoo is the best choice.
There's a fretless instrument similar to a theremin called an Otamatone that you'd probably enjoy.
The same company that makes the pBone also makes a [pTrumpet](pBone PTRUMPET1W Jiggs pTrumpet Plastic Trumpet with Gig Bag & 3C & 5C Mouthpieces, White https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00MPRVQPY/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_zxAzybTC8A9ZB) and an instrument called the [pBuzz](http://www.pBuzz.com/ Kid'sMusical Instrument https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01H3E0YM4/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_VwAzybA4K6FAF), which is like a slide vuvuzela. The pBone and pTrumpet sound surprisingly good when played with regular (metal) mouhtpieces!
Yeah, unfortunately there's not a whole lot of options out there for 49-key pianos. The only thing that comes to mind would be one of those roll-out mat type ones. They're flat and don't provide tactile feedback though.
This kind of thing:
https://www.amazon.com/PicassoTiles-Educational-Electronic-Recording-Different/dp/B01LW5JG15/
You could always use a 49 key midi keyboard and then find some piano software for a computer (but then you'd always need the computer to be able to play).
I feel bad getting rid of toys that my kids like because I remember how it felt when my mom would do it to me (and most of mine didn't even make noise), but this thing was making me insane. That guitar actually doesn't seem so bad, at least compared to the keyboard anyway. One that is really bad, however, is this Mickey drum set that my daughter loves. It's not so bad when it's in use, but it goes through a long, annoying intro every time you turn it on, so of course she has to turn it off and on repeatedly. When I bought it, I thought that was just part of the demo mode, but I was so very wrong. I only continue to keep it around as punishment for myself.
It's quite a while off before they're ready, but I came across these in my search for the same thing

First off, consider something like a roll-up keyboard. I know they will be garbage, but they're way, way more portable than a full size keyboard. Also, easier to power. You can either go for local batteries (expect AA and maybe D only available) or solar. This one has a 5V USB plug for power, which you can probably get a corresponding solar charger to bridge the gap.
Also worth thinking about is that this isn't like something local, meaning that it's a lower value item for theft. No one will know what your crazy American folding keyboard needs to work. But a small but full-size keyboard is something that has resale value because people know what it is and what it does. My guess is that your CD won't ever give you permission to go to Nigeria for any reason, and I wouldn't even consider it. It's a crazy place. Keyboards in country that work will likely be jankey at best, and expensive because there are so few.
I saw this, but it has a really low number of keys http://www.amazon.com/Schoenhut-30-Key-Fancy-Grand-Bench/dp/B0006PJOW4/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1451551959&sr=8-3&keywords=baby+grand
There's a junk shop with a fuckload of upright pianos for nothing. But they're all junked up, I think. If I bought one of those, you think it'd be 150 tops to get it taken care of by a technician?
Can you recommend some starter guitars?
I'm thinking:
Thanks
Schoenhut
Edit: We got one for my daughter's first birthday and love it.
