I've always thought it was pretty junky... I've wanted to get lights to put on the tops of the shelves, so they're directly above the plants and maybe find a new shelf. But these have worked out since November of last year! I started using really cheap LED lights from Walmart, highest wattage equivalency with the highest color spectrum(usually 5000k).

I now use these:

u/wobblyparadox ยท 11 pointsr/SpaceBuckets

Combination of parts from Amazon and ebay. Not all of them are necessary, fittings and Brute trashcans and such are from Home Depot.

You'll need more light. If it claims "35 watts" then it's really closer to 1/3rd of that and 10-12 watts won't cut it.

I just ordered a "100 watt version" of these lights for safety and lighting level evaluation for $22 that will be here Thursday. If the specs are accurate, which I doubt but will test myself, then this may be the minimum needed for a five gallon bucket.

I also just bought the following to test for bucket use:

I bought one of those red led grow lights on amazon for 20$ and leave it running 24/7. Grows chaeto like crazy. I looked for the least amount of wattage i could find so it wouldnt really use too much electricity. Sorry its not sold anymore, but there are a ton of alternatives. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01CH75SGY/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o06__o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I listened to an interesting podcast on it You can buy a bulb and add to an ordinary lamp that it fits. Like this

Interesting article (NSFWish)

You can buy expensive units to do it, but many people just use an ordinary lamp with specialist bulb.

I use plastic Rubbermaid storage containers and 2" net pots. I had room to drill 8 holes with enough spacing for plants to grow. It takes a minute for the plants to establish roots but once they do, its non stop productivity.

I start out from seeds using rockwool cubes. Soak the cubes in water, add a seed to each one. Place them in something like this with a heat pad so they germinate faster. http://www.amazon.com/Hydrofarm-CK64050-Germination-Station-Heat/dp/B000HHO1RO/

I let the plants germinate and grow for about 2 weeks, manually watering the rockwool cubes, with the cover on them you don't have to worry about them drying out very fast. Then when they look good, i put them in the 2" net pots, add some clay hydroponic pellets as well.

Now in the Rubbermaid storage box, make sure its not clear, if light gets in, it will create algae. I just use regular tap water to fill it up. Then use a cheap air stone, connected to a little air pump. This will create air bubbles in the water, the roots need to breath, more bubbles the better.

Then I will add the nutrients, I paid 15 dollars for two bottles I use. Just cheap, vegetative solution. Its not very powerful because lettuce and herbs don't need to flower. Now for this part I have two devices I use. A pH pen, and a PPM pen. pH pen will tell you how acidic your water is, the PPM pen will tell you how powerful your Rubbermaid water reservoir is. I use this handy little chart to tell me what the pH as well as the PPMs should be for growing what. http://www.homehydrosystems.com/ph_tds_ppm/ph_vegetables_page.html

Those two pens costs about 15 bucks each on amazon, you don't HAVE to have them, but it makes things a lot easier. If the pH is too high or too low, they have bottles of pH Up and pH Down, a few drops will get it to where it needs to be.

So now that the water has the nutrients going, and air stone making bubbles, I put the lid of the Rubbermaid back on with the 8 holes I had previously drilled. Then add the 2" net pots with the plants growing. The roots will break through the rockwool and end up floating in the water, the more roots, the faster your plant will grow.

You can do this outside, but during the winter where I live inside is the only option. There are a ton of options, but I choose LED. Its the most expensive option, but they use next to nothing on your power bill, they also don't create much heat at all. The life span of LEDs are also incredible, something like running 24/7 for ten years.

Here is a cheap light that works good. Just hang the light up close to the plants, add a timer for 18 hours a day.

tldr - I trim off an entire head of "Gourmet Blend lettuce" each week, will grow back by in about 7 days, if you have 8 plants going it can be a lot of free, low maintenance food

They live on my work desk under a light with some other plants. I've started putting them by the windows at night now that it's getting colder at night, after reading about their growth cycle. They're about 1/4" across.

Since I recently started tugging regularly again, I've been working on developing a routine that works for my schedule, yet has good growth.

I do MM3 & MM5 a few times at work during the day, but far more in the evenings and on days off. I also wear my TLC-X 1 to 4 hours per day in 1 to 2 hour cycles.

About 6 weeks ago, I got a redlight, and I've been trying to integrate it's usage at night before bed, after what is usually my most intense tugging session of the day, evening tugging whenever I can. So far, I'm only using it about twice per week on average, but I'm working on getting more consistent.

So far, my anecdotal evidence is that is seems to reduce soreness. I feel I've been making good progress overall, but it's hard to tell what is related to my actual tugging versus what is from the redlight. The reality is likely that they go hand in hand. The red light helps keep the skin healthier, thus it is more receptive to tugging.

When I use it, I pull my penis through tight underwear, but the scrotum stays inside the underwear. I then cover myself with a blanked, and use the red light within inches of my penis. Ever 30 seconds, I alternate sides, top, left, right, bottom, front. I try to do it some with the skin rolled forward, and some rolled back. In total, I'll do it for about 10 to 12 minutes. After which time, the heatsinks on the bulb get quite hot. That is my sign to stop, as this is the time I've read is pretty safe. Plus, I don't want to get burned by the bulb's red light or physical heat.

I'm just using an inexpensive amazon set one of the other members here recommended:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01H2Y5U4M/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00J1LZA4A/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I didn't buy any protective eyewear, though I keep it under a blanket the whole time. My daily glasses also have UV protection.

So far, I'm happy with it. Keeping the skin "happy" during tugging regiments is important. "Happy" skin is more likely to grow favorably. For $30 and relatively low risk, I think it's worth it for many.

Wow glad people like it! It's a pretty simple build. It's a 30 Gal bucket lined with aluminum foil (should probably switch to mylar). Then I just used a 36W red & blue LED bulb for lighting and 2 PC fans for a dual exhaust.

Northern Lights

Soil: 2:1 EcoScraps potting mix and my own compost with 2-7-4 granular mixed in at 1\2 cup per 5-gallons.

I chose this soil because it's what I use in my other container plants. It was a known starting point.

Light: Roleandro UFO LED 270w

Nutes: Fox Farms Schedule for the top 3, kelp, and mackerel. I repeated some weeks when I topped and waited for some outgrowth. All nutes were delivered with compost tea.

The large plant was the real plant in this first grow. I chose Northern Lights because I read it was easy and bushy. I opted for topping with SCROG training because it was the smallest learning curve, though I'm not a stranger to pruning and training.

The smaller plant was also Northern Lights. It was grown for a short-lived idea. I attempted to give it away and was shut down on this subreddit. I had a few personal connections but no takers. I opted to leave it in and see what happens. It hasn't been topped at all.

I had the #5 nursery pot already, so I went with that. My next attempt will be #3 pots. #5 is too big for the tent, too big to move, and too much water retention.

My next grow will be a mix of 2:1:1 of Potting Soil:Compost:Perlite. I want looser soil, better drainage, and a lighter pot so I can use less water. Instead of any granular fertilizer additions, I'm going to add earthworm castings, for a total ratio mix of 2:1:1:0.5.

This way I can use the fertilizer schedule in full for reg. plants and half for autos without worry of burning anything.

For any plant that looks bulbasaur-ish (Sempervivum, Echeveria, and some Haworthia varaties [Haworthia v. Cooperi maybe?]), yes.

Without light the plant will become etiolated, quickly growing tall as it can and folding it's leaves out as flat as it can in search of light resulting in a tall weak stemmed plant that will often fall over. Haworthias can be OK with just the light from a windowsill though and the leaves don't really grow from a stem that will stretch out with lack of light.

For Sempervivums and Echeverias a few hours under something like this(or any full spectrum light, there are cheaper versions out there) daily is enough to keep them happy. edit: They'd probably also be happy enough in the windowsill but they'd get tall enough to look strange in a bulbasaur pot pretty quickly.

I only keep one side on at a time because Iโ€™m afraid to melt my plants but I just got this one and am a novice user!

Hope this helps you decide on one! I know how tedious it is to pick some lamps out, especially online.

Always happy to share knowledge. :) All my lights are diy pendant lights so I don't have personal suggestions for clamp hood setups but here are a few suggestions:

Clamp light fixture - No personal experience with this one but it's a broader clamp hood to accomodate larger LED lights but they may poke out of the bottom of the hood. Ymmv

LED Light suggestions:

  • Sansi - This is the light I use and I really like it. I have no useable windows in my apartment so all my plants are under 4 of these lights and they're all pushing out new leaves all the time. The monstera uses 2 bulbs as its become quite large. Sansi also makes this bulb in a couple lower watts if this one is too intense but you'll have to move your plants closer to the bulbs.

  • GE - No personal experience with this one but the specs are really similar to the Sansi above. Btw/fyi, PPF/PPFD is a more accurate measurement of how much light is available for photosynthesis.

  • iledlight - Again no personal experience but this looks like a super bright light, brighter than the Sansi or GE. I might consider buying this one to try on my monstera... ๐Ÿค”

Hope this helps and good luck! ๐ŸŒฑโ˜˜๐Ÿ€

I think the reason you're not getting blooms on some is low light. Cattleyas need 2000-3000 fc (according to the AOS, which is in line with everything else I've read). Oncidiums (which I'm pretty sure is what you other non-bloomer is) like quite a bit of light too, mine are in an east-facing window that gets full sun only filtered by a window screen until noon. The only cattleya I've had for a while hasn't flowered either, I got this light for it and had to raise it up a little because the leaves started reddening so I know it's about as much light as it can handle. Hoping for blooms next year.

Hmm... the container is a plastic storage box I had lying around at home which I spraypainted black. The container was less than $5 if I recall correctly. Black spraypaint (make sure to get one which is designed to adhere to plastic) was about $5.

Air pump is this guy which was about $15.

Light is one of these bulbs, housed in one of these reflectors. $18 and $11 respectively.

Then the air stone, clay pebbles, net pots, air tubing, etc were all leftovers I had lying around.

All told maybe $50?

For the lights i got, they are all 4 heads facing the 1 small Serissa about 4" away. Glad to hear that's not too close! I can still return them though cuz i just got them, so if that bulb is better then i'll get it if a similar one comes in white/yellow. Purple would make me crazy.

That's a shallow, four-liter plastic dish with three 2" mesh pots. There's a air stone aerating the water, and this LED lamp timed for 18 hours on, 6 off. The peppers have been sprouting in peat starter pots for a few weeks. I've fertilized with two-part dutch formula grow. Can't wait!

Thank you for your answer.

>But loose, undense buds are a sign of not enough light.

My guy was sure it was the light and I trust him completely. He does not use a bucket though.

>2 on your list that specifically mentions the CREE CXB3590 is the only light that I would consider. If it really is running at 100 watts then that would be overkill for a five gallon bucket. Secondary optics on the COB really is not desirable for Space Buckets, though.

Thank you very much for your answer, the description in this one says:

>pcs 100W CXB3590 or Citizen ClU48-1212(wall draw power: about 50watts)*

And the cover can easily be removed by removing the four screws.

Would you recommend that one over the Niello UFO that you have? I do not use side lightning. What kind of harvest do you get with it? I'm leaning towards the UFO as it would be the easiest to install in my current setup. I found a bunch of very good reviews for this very similar one.

>A light that can not be beat otherwise would be a DIY COB. Growmau5 on YouTube has a bunch of videos on building COB LED grow lights that actually has a high amount of competence in this field.

I understand that, but I'm looking for minimum hassle.

>A major mistake that I see a lot of people making who build COB lights is that they will not spend $20 on a light meter to dial in the height of the COB from the plant.

Thanks again, I'll keep your guides in mind!

A T5 or LED setup like the ones in the links should work pretty well. There are definitely still other cheaper options out there, but I haven't done my research on that end of the market so I rather not give you possibly incorrect information.

u/joeasian ยท 1 pointr/indoorgardening

The problem with having a plastic cover is that plants need carbon dioxide to photosynthesize. This is why good greenhouses have fans. Plants do such a good job converting carbon dioxide that if there isn't good ventilation their growth will be stunted.

I would also get a stronger LED grow light such as this one. I have a few of these. They're blindingly bright.

u/lovelystrange ยท 1 pointr/zerocarb

u/TigerBeetle ยท 1 pointr/hydro

Yeah... I get excited about lights sometimes. I am used to thinking in terms of my set up which has no natural light. And when I thought 'tree' I thought much bigger.

If you have some natural light you won't need nearly as much power as I suggested. I'd get the clamp light (or other lamp of your choice that can be aimed directly at the plant) and then either a CFL or if you want an LED, go up a couple sizes to be safe. Though, you might be able to get away with less depending on your windows situation.

u/Mikerk ยท 1 pointr/gardening

u/kimcaal ยท 1 pointr/houseplants

This lil guy is potted in organic potting soil with a heavy mixture of pumice stirred in - the soil retains water well and also drains well. The only appropriate window in my apartment faces north so I have a plant lamp on it for most of the day while I am at work (7am-5pm). After reading up on the plant a bit, I put a tray with gravel and water under it to help with humidity. I also have a moisture meter in it and water when it is in the Dry range.

When I first got it, I unwittingly placed it near an air vent and the draft caused the leaves to get crunchy, brown, and fall off so I moved it from that spot.

I thought it was getting better after the move but my building A/C is on high this summer and I think it's causing this guy to stay in shock. How can I confirm and/or mitigate the damage the A/C is causing?

I'm extremely green when it comes to grow lights so I really appreciate the knowledge and please forgive all the questions. Is any extra light helpful to plant health or should you try to stick to as much of a day/night schedule as you can? I assume 24 hours on would not be good but would an extra few hours of light here and there be beneficial? Is there a practical difference between "daylight" LED bulbs and something like this? I'm shopping for an office setup for a couple of specimens of Stapelia: S. hirsuta and S.grandifola. Thanks to those who provided some early feedback on what I'd need.

Specifically, I'm going to be buying a grow-light for my office. I anticipate having a total of 3 succulents, each in 6" or 8" clay pots. Substrate will be Bonsai Jack Succulent Cactus Soil Gritty Mix #111 -- the relative high cost of this soil is OK since I won't need much, and I'm hoping for a good setup.

I'm having difficulty picking a grow light. For several reasons, I want to go with LED grow lights, and not fluorescent tubes. What I need help with is the wattage of lighting that I'll need; I want sufficient light, but don't want to fry the plants.

I'm thinking about this 100W grow LED bulb, which I'll mount over the plants. Is this a good wattage, or should I be looking at something like this 300W enclosed LED kit?

Thanks! -- Dan

I have no outdoor space where I could keep a bonsai. I already know that indoor bonsai is more of a challenge than doing it the right way, but if I were to place a ficus by a south facing window and supplement that with this kind of grow light, would it be able to live under those conditions or would I be setting myself up for failure by doing that as my first tree?
