Not sure if you guys can notice the difference on my soft top, but for those of you who don't know how I did this I used this soft top dye, I restored it fairly cheap. I used black top gel and it totally transformed my Miata.

You're welcome.

Griot's has a conversion kit with 4 pads that you can buy off Amazon for $50.00 That's what I used.http://www.amazon.com/Griots-Garage-10515-Orbital-Conversion/dp/B00X608RJ2?ie=UTF8&psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_search_detailpage

A set of wheels and tires dedicated for Winter / snow driving, and having the oem set for spring / summer / fall. Check out Blizzaks. Unless the tires you have are some really good all seasons, your tires will freeze and not get good traction in the winter. I'm from the South though so I'm not an expert on the subject, but think this is worth mentioning first.

Digital tire gauge. Don't get an analog gauge because they lose calibration easily. Check tires often.

12V tire compressor kit.

Sunshade for front windshield.

Legal tints for side and rear glass.

Dyson handheld vacuum. So clean everyday.

Ice melter.

Here's a nice cleaning kit by Meguiar's that costs $25, Amazon link, contains Gold Class soap, wax, applicator pads, microfiber towels, quick detailer, scratch remover, and clay bar. Nice little kit to start you out on getting some nice car detailing supplies. There's also the New car care kit but I prefer the other one, just get your own wash mitt and bucket. But seeing you're in the northeast right now, I guess all this would be pretty useless to you as all the salt and slush you guys are going to get for the next few months.

Lint - free paper towels or toilet paper. Don't bring linty towels in your clean car!

Invisible glass and RainX protectant on windows! And for your inside windows, keep a 100% clean microfiber to dry polish the inside glass to remove any smudges that appear. Keep your glass towels in plastic baggies separately and label them, you don't want them getting mixed in with wax towels.

If it were me, I'd prefer something that I can actually use on or in the car, as opposed to clothing/wallets/accessories.

Off the top of my head:

  • New pair of front floor mats (if his are worn)
  • Rear decklid lip spoiler (eBay - I'd check seller reviews carefully before purchasing)
  • BMW valve stem caps ($4, found on eBay)
  • Griots Garage car care kit ($65 on Amazon). I got this as a gift a few years back, one of the best car-related gifts I've been given. I still use the Griots stuff and replace individual items as needed
  • Mountek smartphone mount ($30 on Amazon) - This is the best mount I've come across. I have an E46 M3 and it fits perfectly in the CD slot, nice and compact and can easily be removed if needed.

    Good luck!

I’m no detailer, but I like these Meguiars wipes: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00381BSKO/ref=dp_cerb_1. They’re big and you can get quite a bit of surface inside with them. They come in gloss, low gloss and matte depending on what you prefer.

Awesome! Thanks for the research. I too like to research, so inspired by and based on your research, I calculated the price per gram/ounce for each of these:

$0.33/g $9.44/oz AutoGlym Hi Def $49.96 for 150g / 5.29oz

$0.32/g $9.23/oz AutoGyym HDWAXUS High Definition Wax $48.92 for 150g / 5.3oz

$0.09/g $2.67/oz Collinite 915 Marque D'Elegance $31.99 for 340.19g / 12oz

$0.07/g $2.74/oz Nattys White & Blue both $21.95 for 226.80g / 8oz

$0.41/g $11.82/oz RaceGlaze 55 $130.00 for 311.85g / 11oz

$8.73/milliliter Swissvax Divine $3490/400ml

$4.00/milliliter Mystery $799.00/200ml

$4.00/milliliter BoS and Concourso $799.00/200ml

$0.46/g $12.97/oz Victoria Concours $38.90 for 85g / 3oz

$3.67/g $104.09/oz Zymol Vintage $2290.00 for 623.69g / 22oz "with unlimited refills for life"

$0.45/g $12.63/oz Glasur $101.00 for 226.8g / 8oz)

The Swissvax ones list the volume, not weight.

This list is for the price per gram/ounce of each wax. Price per weight is not necessarily accurate to compare waxes because some might be lighter or heavier than others and while having the same coverage and protection. Some include instructions stating to apply it as thin as possible and some state to apply two to three layers for deeper gloss.

An accurate price comparison would be the price per area covered and protected per layer and/or per depth of gloss and/or per amount of protection (perhaps quantifiable by the duration it lasts). All of these seem to be something that would take significant time, expertise, and possibly equipment to determine. I looked at the descriptions only briefly and did not see manufacturer estimates for how much area the waxes would cover at all, let alone how much area it would cover at the recommended thickness to last a specified amount of time. It would be nice if we had an industry standard for this.

1g = 0.0353oz

1oz = 28.3495g

u/Adoraci · 2 pointsr/AutoDetailing

I got mine on Amazon - you'll only use 1-2oz per application.

u/sboyerfour · 2 pointsr/GolfGTI

The actual tool I used was Porter Cable's DA Polisher

With that I did:

  • Simple microfiber mitt wash
  • Microfiber towel dry
  • Full body clay bar using this kit

  • All-in-one wax & polish with this, applying with these.

If you go this route, you'll also need a [hook&loop attachment]
(https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B00BQVF8J0/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o07_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1) for the polisher. I did a lot of research before landing on what would get me good results with very minimal time. I did the whole thing in about 4 hours, after not having done anything but a normal wash for 3.5 years. about 9 months later, I'm ready for (need) another detailing.

A hand wash and wax with a dedicated wax product is always the best option. And you can buy all those products yourself for $50-60 and DIY the job yourself every saturday / day off for years.

If you're short on time and cash, just buy this $20 Meguiar's car care kit on amazon: http://amzn.com/B004HCU77I

It has: Ultimate Wash and Wax, Ultra Plush Microfiber Wash Mitt, Water Magnet Microfiber Drying Towel, Ultimate Liquid Wax with Soft Foam Applicator, Supreme Shine Microfiber Towel and Endurance Tire Gel with applicator.

Yeah I know your pain. There is this on amazon if you want both, but it's still $8 for shipping. That is what I bought when I bought FG400 and SF4000.

You could always wait until autogeek has a free shipping sale or coupon or something. They seem to have some good ones every once in a while.

As a black car owner:

  • A good wax
  • A California Duster
  • Quick Detailer

EDIT I feel like someones going to chime in and say I'm wrong. This is the way I keep my black car clean & new looking. I bet there are better ways but I do what works for me...

You can use an aluminum silicate polish and it will fill and shine it. I use it all the time for reselling phones that are gorilla glass (aluminosilicate glass).

It is expensive and that smallest size you can get is a quart (which is overkill)

Here you go!

I would try one of the DIY alloy wheel repair kits you can get from most Auto Part stores. Consists of a filler to fill the chip and some silver paint. Should be able to do a half decent job with some effort.https://www.amazon.co.uk/Alloy-Wheel-Repair-Planet-Polish/dp/B0036IQOXU

Clay bar probably won't remove the scratches, it just cleans the surface, so it may even appear to make the scratches more visible. If the scratches are just in the clearcoat, you can get something like Scratch-X, or this stuff which would be even better.

3M Finesse It II

u/hippocratic_oaf · 1 pointr/everymanshouldknow

There are two different factors in machine polishing: the hardness of the pads and the coarseness of the polishing compound. Until you have a feel for things then the basic advice is to work from a hard pad and coarse polish through a medium/medium to a soft pad and fine polish.

If there are really deep scratches then you might not get them out. For a while there was a cat that used to like sitting on my roof and I have a few quite deep scratches thanks to its claws. You can still see them but only when you are close.

Depending on how deep the scratches are, you might be able to use some 3M scratch remover and polish them away. It will take some doing but it should work. Make sure to use a microfiber cloth so as not to create new ones.
Professional quality refinishing products can be quite pricey and don't usually come in 1 tub quantity. Plus you'd have to invest in a respirator, etc.

Stage 1: Pure polish
Stage 2: Micro-Polishing Glaze
Stage 3: Carnauba wax

I was thinking of adding in actual compound before stage 1 though.

Thank you for your reply. I've been neglecting her because the BMW gets all the love. Would this 3m Paint Restoration System work at all or would you strongly advise that I pony-up and get better products like the Meguiars you've mentioned? What else should I get as well as far as supplies? (clay? which pads? what other bottled items?) I have a DA polisher on deck already. I ask because I can get this kit for $14. Otherwise, aside from re-painting or wrapping, I'm willing to spend what I must for over-the-counter goods first.

Got just the thing for you. I made the same mistake on my car. The product is called "Auto-Chem Scratch Off." http://www.amazon.com/Auto-Chem-Professional-655-008-SCRATCH-OFF/dp/B00JBNYYQ8
Though it has mixed reviews on Amazon, it did a great job on my Toyota.

I’ll post good after pics tonight on a separate post, the before pics aren’t great quality. Honestly the top was in great condition for how old it is, but I really baby this thing so I did it anyway very carefully. I’m very happy with the results. Already multiple people asked if it’s a new top.

Unfortunately I don't have it anymore. You can get it on Amazon for 25 dollars shipped though!

Bottle doesn't look right in the picture but it's the same stuff you'd get on Autogeek.
