Assuming an iPhone spec camera, that would equal 170mb per minute of 4K30 or 400mb per minute of 4K60. They would record at approximately 2.8mb/s and 6.67mb/s.

An 8TB hard drive with write speed of 160mb/s should have more than enough bandwidth to handle 4K60 recording. This HDD.

How much can you record on an 8TB hard drive?

8TB is 8 million megabytes so dividing it by (400*60) would give us 333.333 hours of footage. That’s about 13.8 days of footage at 4K60

Most security cameras overwrite footage so using an 8TB hard drive would give you almost 2 weeks of footage you can go back on before it’s overwritten. That’s enough time for law enforcement to grab a copy of the footage.

At 4K30, that gives you 32.6 days of footage. So it doesn’t have anything to do with storage. I’m guessing the initial costs just don’t seem to justify the increased resolution for most business owners.

This system costs $630 for four 4K cameras and 2TB storage. Whereas a system with four 720p cameras like this costs $170. That’s almost 4 times the initial cost. Still sucks in cases like these though.

Edit: as someone pointed out this data is true for 1 camera. If you do 8 cameras you can compress the footage to 50% of its original size without major loss of data for more efficient storage. Or compress anyways for double the timespan.

However if all you need is to go back 7 days on footage at 4K30, two 8TB hard drives will provide that with compression on 8 cameras. Regardless, it’s still not astronomically expensive.

If she is, she will just go right back to jail.

Go to either Costco or look online through amazon for a surveillance system that you can access online. This one is 269.00: http://www.amazon.com/Zmodo-PKD-DK0855-500GB-8-Channel-Security-Cameras/dp/B004TS1HH4/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1411490345&sr=8-3&keywords=surveillance+camera+system

That way, if she ever does come to the house, you always have proof and can throw her ass right back in jail.

Edit: Damn brain..CONGRATS BTW!! Super happy you guys got justice in all this!

>And general advice as I prepare my bags and car?

Take everything - even those things you think "I probably won't need that!" Are you camping with a group or by yourself? The packing list will be different. However, one life saver is just a rechargeable battery and folding solar panel. This will charge your phone, your kindle, and anything else that has a USB power plug.

What you do is just let the solar panel lay out in a sunny spot with the battery hooked up to it all day. Once the battery is recharged at night, bring it in your sleeping space and plug in your near dead electronics. It's way easier to do this than to find an outlet open or one that won't cost you probably more over the course of Pennsic than the battery and the solar panel together will.

Drink water. Not beer, not wine, not that funny stuff they serve down in the bog - water. You need it.

Walmart runs are actually entertaining. You can go in garb. Heck, I've been to Church in garb while staying at Pennsic. Don't worry about changing into muggle clothing - no one cares in the nearby towns.

Activities - check out the booklets when troll hands them to you. Read through both of them. One is a schedule of classes and other fun things like the battlefield schedules. Sign up for a few classes. Also, sign up for a couple of hours at troll - you get to see people and you learn a lot.

Will you be going with family? Kids? What sort of accommodations have you brought to sleep in? If a tent, I highly recommend bringing enough pallets to make a "floor" for your tent. Just throw a couple of boards on top of the pallets - you can get the boards at Pennsic or at one of the hardware stores around it- and put some cheap rugs (IKEA!!!!) over the boards. This gives you elevation so when it does rain, your tent will not flood. Also, having a wood floor to walk on is just nicer in general.

Bring money. Anything you forgot at home can be bought at Pennsic. If it's not 100% necessary, wait until Midnight Madness to buy the item if not the next day (or the day after that!). The merchants will start having some sales and deals around that time - not as good as they used to but still some deals are well worth the wait.

OP, I'm probably one of the few people who have direct experience with this, as I used to live on a pretty big drug corner in DC. The security cameras are really the best idea (second to calling the cops, obvs). It's a proactive way of getting the dealers away from your house without getting into a personal provocation.

Multiple cameras is really what you want. Here's a diagram of what I did. You want one looking at your stoop and front door, but from an angle so you can get a good picture of the face of anyone who's coming to your door. The camera's FOV should also capture the sidewalk beyond your door (i.e., going down the street to the left). Cam 2 should essentially mirror Cam1, so you can see the sidewalk to the right.

Cam 3 depends on what you want to do. If you want to chase away drug dealers, it doesn't really matter what the camera sees, it's what the dealers think the camera sees. If you want to actually capture video that can be used as evidence, you'll need a camera that's substantially higher quality than the average video camera, as you'll need a lens. It'll also probably be too far for IR LED illumination, meaning you'll get really shitty night pictures. Personally, I don't recommend trying to 'see' anything with Cam3, since the dealers will probably move on as soon as you set it up, and then you just have really impressive pictures of a vacant building.

It should go without saying that the cameras need to be well out of reach of anyone on the street, so you'll need at least a 12' ladder to set them up. Check out either Kensington Tool Library or West Philly Tool Library, depending on where you live. For cameras, there's tons of cheapo options out there. If you're really going to go all out, I recommend hard-wired cameras, since accessing wifi cameras to change the battery is a pain in and of itself.

Good luck! And let me know if you have any questions. One real advantage to having security cameras is that you get to know your local detectives pretty quickly, especially if you live on a busy street. My cameras helped solve an attempted murder!

If you're concerned, I'm going to recommend installing these:

Camera 1 OR

Camera 2

These are better than a security system because:

It deters crime in your area, not just someone breaking in.

It's cheaper long term ($300 one-time vs $30 / month).

It's video, so it can serve multiple purposes.

It has a recording log, can watch packages, check on 'if someone arrived' etc...

I got Camera 1 hooked up to my business, $300 + installation which was another $300 (you can get it done cheaper). That linked the Cameras to my phone, so I can watch my business on my phone, track customers, etc, security, packages, and storms.

And I've used my footage to assist crime in the area, and simply knowing that cars coming in and out of my area are being recorded reduces crime in and of itself. Not to mention I got 30 day recording and can expand from 4 to 8 cameras any time. No additional / monthly fees.

I can't give you a recommendation I have tested, but here is Amazon's top-selling system in surveillance DVRs:

http://amzn.com/B004TS1HH4

It's $204, and you get 8 cameras all over. The cameras are all standardized and inexpensive so you can put up different ones if you want.

You hook it to your tv or using your phone/Internet.

If you want higher res, get a PoE system, maybe like this:

http://amzn.com/B00I2GNBZ

It will be all digital, but less cameras

Both systems record for some time so you can view what happened after the fact.

Or just hunt around on amazon, and read the reviews. It'll give you an idea what you're getting into.

Hey, here's a list of compatible cameras and the ones i used.

Camera List: https://wiki.zoneminder.com/Hardware_Compatibility_List

Camera I used (similar): https://www.amazon.com/Zclever-Security-Surveillance-Weatherproof-Detection/dp/B07H2C2RV2

Thanks for all this.

I was looking at https://www.amazon.com/Amcrest-8-Channel-Pre-Installed-Smartphone-AMDV10818-1TB/dp/B07S39GGJ5/ref=sr_1_2_sspa?keywords=4ch%2Banalog%2Bdvr&qid=1569775031&sr=8-2-spons&spLa=ZW5jcnlwdGVkUXVhbGlmaWVyPUFUU05aMDAwWldVTFMmZW5jcnlwdGVkSWQ9QTA5NzMxNTUyMTNCWlJNU0tIWFpPJmVuY3J5cHRlZEFkSWQ9QTA2Mzk2NjUySzUxUU85M05VRTJBJndpZGdldE5hbWU9c3BfYXRmJmFjdGlvbj1jbGlja1JlZGlyZWN0JmRvTm90TG9nQ2xpY2s9dHJ1ZQ&th=1

because it has the ability to view remotely without having a direct line to a monitor via the Amcrest View Pro app.

It's like 80$ more than what you posted though.

Do you know if there's a cheaper solution that still allows for remote viewing?

u/houstonhousebreakin · 2 pointsr/houston

I purchased this from Amazon. It's a wired DVR system so I had to have help to do the wiring and installation.

u/StealthCamper · 2 pointsr/skoolies

You are correct in that I didn't answer your question. My advice, and take it with a grain of salt as I am not a mechanical engineer, is this:

If you are trying to monitor the outside of your bus from the inside of your bus, it is very doable. There are a host of battery powered cameras that do not need to be tied to shore power and are able to be monitored remotely (At least the setups I have seen are). Most are motion activated which helps to save battery life.

https://www.amazon.com/ZOSI-Security-Recorder-Weatherproof-Smartphone/dp/B00MP57IOY/ref=sr_1_6?crid=1WYCL3K85MPVL&keywords=remote+security+camera&qid=1574011642&sprefix=remote+secu%2Caps%2C150&sr=8-6

The issue is this, I believe that these are tied to WiFi and require a stable connection. Hard to do on a mobile bus without it being tied to shore power and a wifi connection. This is why it is important to know WHY. If I knew a little more about your setup, I could offer better advice.

I personally would recommend using a hardwired setup. Harbor Freight has them pretty cheap. No need for WiFi or battery power. But that is assuming that you have onboard battery setups.

Happy to help however I can, but I am limited without any further information.

Best bet may just be buying an analog DVR similar to the one below and connecting the cameras to it and see if they work. I never tried this model, but it's cheap and just an example. If you have an analog viewfinder, you could just connect the viewfinder to the BNC end and see if you have an image. But theres no real point in spending money on a viewfinder, when you could just get the DVR through Amazon, and worst case return the DVR. There has to be a power source somewhere, typically 12VDC but they definitely could be different. I have some flirs at my house (IP though) and mine disassemble by unscrewing the shroud from the base. Then the ball of the camera just hangs loosely. It should tell you on the camera its voltage requirements.

u/dh42com · 1 pointr/homesecurity

They are I am pretty sure. They advert them as 5k cameras, but I am not sure if it is the compression on the dvr or the actual cameras that is causing the low video quality issues. Here is what I have. https://www.amazon.com/ZOSI-Security-Cameras-Surveillance-Channel/dp/B07S8VXHCG/ref=pd_sbs_421_4/132-9281614-8376710?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_i=B07S8VXHCG&pd_rd_r=753c5b3c-75b4-491c-adf5-4e37b94bcc2d&pd_rd_w=CoFhq&pd_rd_wg=w1mnN&pf_rd_p=52b7592c-2dc9-4ac6-84d4-4bda6360045e&pf_rd_r=4GX014PB2PQY6CMPP4PX&refRID=4GX014PB2PQY6CMPP4PX&th=1 That camera and that dvr, but with 8 cameras.

The limitations I have is they use a windows app to view on the computer, I cannot connect to the dvr with any web access. I use ubuntu for my computers. The app on my phone is super horrible with lag, like I cannot view past video without it just freezing and locking up (s9 so its not the phone).

I work with severs daily, I was just thinking about repurposing an old 3770k in a new box with a better graphics card and more storage than the 2tb and seeing where it got me. Its the small stuff that annoys me, but I figure something better could be done.

u/protogenxl · 1 pointr/homesecurity

well they are 800TVL this is TV horizontal Lines so these cameras are Under 720p so even the basic Amcrest 1080p dvr should support them using the 960H setting. The Linked DVR does not include a hard drive as you can find one via pcpartpicker.com at a significantly better price point.

u/BearskiMcBear · 1 pointr/HomeImprovement

I just installed this system at my parent's house and it's pretty slick. You can purchase a hard drive separately to store all of the data and play back from any device (including native iPhone/iPad app). You can log in to view your cameras in real time or view storage from anywhere on the internet. Hooking everything up was super easy, and the system can be expanded from 4 cameras to 8 if you buy more.

All that being said, my favorite security system in the world is a German Shepherd combined with something that goes "bang".

u/fritocloud · 1 pointr/homesecurity

What about something like this?

I currently have a wifi battery camera (made by Reolink) and it absolutely sucks and is not suitable for my needs. I need something that records continuously and that I can check remotely by phone and hopefully desktop. And I want 3-4 cameras on the same system. This is for home security. From what I can tell, a DVR is what would work best for me and what I plan on doing is running the cables through conduit along the edges of my house, into an upstairs window and it would connect with the DVR which would connect to my router. At least I think that's how it would work. I'm pretty new to this so any help would be appreciated. Also, I was thinking on making a post but it seems like there are already a lot of posts with these kinds of questions already (I just haven't seen anything specific to my situation yet.) Please let me know if you think I should just make a new post.

Edit: typo

would something like this be fine to replace it with: https://www.amazon.com/Night-Owl-8-Channel-Extreme-Compatible/dp/B07DF6NSQW/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1542641382&sr=8-5&keywords=8+channel+night+owl

i had the Model: L-DVR8-5GB 8 Channel H.264 DVR w/500 GB HD

u/justin_144 · 1 pointr/homeowners

Here's the system I have. It's great overall, but the motion detection is crappy, so I turned that feature off. I don't know how the motion detection compares to other systems.

u/AlphaRugaru · 1 pointr/homesecurity

Would this system fit my requirements?

By fit, I mean. Can I use this without internet. Strictly recording locally on a DVR.

It's only $86 - 10% on Amazon today:

You're talking about buying a shotgun and confronting an unknown person with an unknown threat level, and then claiming money is too tight for a security camera?

Look up surveillance systems on your favorite online merchant. I found this.

I live in a neighborhood outside of a major U.S. city which has a lot of gang problems. Surveillance systems is our neighborhood's favorite security solution, along with alarm systems. Nobody has to play Batman.

Step One is you should go down to the police station and file a report.

Step Two is obtain a simple system that records, along with 2 - 4 cameras.

Step Three: Check what's being recorded. For all you know, the guy is coming a lot more often than you realize. If you get footage, take it or show it to the police. They may recognize the person, and they will certainly appreciate the information.

Step Four. The next time an incident happens, call 911 immediately and tell them that there is an intruder.

If the person is trying to get into the house, turn off inside lights, turn on the outside lights, and from inside the house, tell the person to fuck off or you'll blow their brains out. There is a good chance that will scare them off.

If not, as quietly as possible, go with your wife to a lockable room such as a bedroom or bathroom and wait for the cops. Note the time. When the cops come, if the guy is gone, they can deduce how far he may have gotten.
