Seconding that you should upgrade the knife.

There are a lot of good options, although I would recommend you shy away from the Gerber brand as they have some quality control issues, and have been running quite a few recalls (Including on that utility knife you're carrying). I was hoping to have a link for you to an article comparing their number of recalls versus several other companies but can't seem to find it currently. A quick googling though will show you what I mean.

For a list of nice knife options for less than $100 (and most around the $50 mark) check out some of these:

Spyderco Endura

Cold Steel Recon 1

Cold Steel American Lawman

Cold Steel Voyager

Kershaw Blur

Benchmade Griptilian

Ontario RAT 1 Folder

CRKT Heiho

I think these on top of the list /u/OC4815162342 provided should give you oodles of options!

Also if you want to upgrade that wallet of yours here are some options to look at.

You should go with the ESEE6 then: www.amazon.com/ESEE-6P-B-Survival-Micarta-Handle/dp/B004DTWMH8/ref=pd_sim_468_3?ie=UTF8&dpID=41vpikPqK2L&dpSrc=sims&preST=_AC_UL160SR160%2C160&refRID=0JR22YP07JS8KQV9C38C

They've been around the whole time. I bought a Boker .45 pen several years ago. Works great and I just replaced the ink for the first time 2 weeks ago. I paid significantly less than that Amazon price though.

u/Syncharmony · 3 pointsr/knives

Yup! The Chaparral is what you are looking for.

It also comes in titanium scales

Here's a comparison picture with a sage 1 on top and the chaparral on the bottom.

Chap is about 3.62" closed vs the Sage which is 4.18". Blade length is only a .2" difference though which is nice. It's a back lock vs the liner lock of the Sage. I understand it's a very nice knife and the carbon fiber scales are practically identical between it and the Sage.

u/BobJWHenderson · 3 pointsr/EDC

Not sure what your budget is but I always thought this thing was pretty sexy. Here’s a way cheaper orange knife

u/cricks1492 · 3 pointsr/knifeclub

Yep! Cold Steel is pretty hard to beat at this price-point. Could also consider the recon 1 (is this in cts-xhp or aus8a?), mini recon 1, or the american lawman.

I have a bayonet on all my handguns! Amazon, 20 bucks. https://www.amazon.com/Firefield-FF77000-Pistol-Knife-Bayonet/dp/B00K0TOF70

They are a bit rough for appendix and Mexican carry though.

Well obvious plug for /r/EDC

u/TwoStepsFromThursday · 3 pointsr/knives

For a folder, either a Spyderco ParaMilitary 2, Benchmade Freek, or a ZT 0350 will all be top-quality knives that can take a helluva beating.

For a fixed blade, either an ESEE 6 or a Fallkniven A1 should handle everything you could ever do to it.

u/funknjam · 3 pointsr/fountainpens

PLEASE AND THANK YOU!!!!

I'm very, very new to all this. Maybe this might seem like a weird request at first but bear with me and I'll explain. How much would I have to spend / what would I have to buy to get a fountain pen that is:

  • made from absolutely no plastic

  • uses/consumes absolutely no plastic in its operation (i.e., ink from a bottle, not from a disposable cartridge)

  • has a fine nib that is conservative in terms of ink consumption

  • good for everyday / all day use, not just a "special occasion" pen

  • doesn't look fancy or expensive

  • cheap enough so I can afford two

The explanations for my various criteria... I'm a college prof and environmental scientist. I finished a lecture the other day on resource depletion and waste and after railing against plastic water bottles for (and a lot more) for the millionth time, I looked down and took note of the many disposable plastic pens (Pilot G-2s) hanging on the lanyard around my neck with my ID badge. Epiphany. As a teacher I consume so MANY pens, it's ridiculous. There has to be a way for me to do my job (I write a LOT) while consuming no plastic at all. Not even a cartridge refill. Just ink.

Speaking of ink... talk to me about that. What's the availability of soy-based or other "eco-friendly" inks for a pen like I'm describing? I need red

The reason I want two is, as you might expect since I'm a teacher, I regularly use red ink and blue or black ink.

I'd prefer that it not be too expensive so an argument can be made that there is an easily affordable alternative to disposables. However, I am prepared to spend what is necessary to "go green" here.

I don't do calligraphy and in no way will I be doing anything artistic with this pen (other than the occasional smiley/frowny faces I might draw on an exam) so I don't want a flexible nib, I want something with a nib that gives me a fine line and doesn't consume a lot of ink (again, just trying to do my job while minimizing my ecological footprint).

Since I had never even held a fountain pen before, just as a place to start I bought this Schrade SCPEN7G "tactical" fountain pen from amazon the other day. After consuming about half of the cartridge I've realized it is far too "wet" for me. It lays down a really thick amount of ink and just writing on regular copy paper (exams/quizzes/handouts) it would seem that the paper really sucks the ink out of the pen a LOT faster (and with a really fat line) than I'd like.

So what do you recommend? I've been poring over amazon, ebay, /r/fountainpens, and even /r/edc for way too long now and it's consuming too much time and I have homework to grade so I'm admitting defeat and asking for help!

    PLEASE AND THANK YOU!
u/doctordangerdds · 3 pointsr/EDC

I've had the folder for about a month. The grip is comfortable and fits in my hand well. I would definitely buy another.

u/phi303 · 2 pointsr/EDC

this is exactly why i went through a dozen EDC pens and finally landed on the BOKER PLUS, small sacrifice with the cartridge but the pen's design is awesome!

u/stylus2vinyl · 2 pointsr/knives

I'm currently eyeing the BK10 or the BK2

The BK2 seems better suited to heavier tasks, some light chopping and batoning whereas the BK10 seems like a nicer all around knife that can handle batoning and the abuse but is also thinner so it can carve and feather stuff.

u/theproghead · 2 pointsr/knives

I have these Cold Steel knives and they are great. Carbon steel, so they are less brittle than stainless knives and won't chip. They are a good weight and length for throwing. Shorter knives spin faster so you need to be more consistent and accurate. They don't look fancy, but they are nice knives

u/unclever · 2 pointsr/EDC

I came across this one the other day: SOG Twitch II Rosewood

Looks nice and the reviews are pretty good.

The Cold Steel Recon 1 is built like a tank.

http://www.amazon.com/Cold-Steel-Recon-Tactical-Handle/dp/B00322JP04/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1376643842&sr=8-4&keywords=cold+steel+knives+recon+1

There's 3 different blade shapes to choose from, you can get serrated or plain edge and you can pick different sizes.

http://www.coldsteel.com/Product/RECON.20_1.20_SERIES/RECON_1_SERIES.aspx

I'd go with the 4 inch clip point plain edge version personally.

Any Cold Steel knife with a tri-ad lock should be pretty strong.

u/Noktol · 2 pointsr/knives

Here is I list of some links where you can get some great knives from places that sell in the UK, consider it my list of recommendations for an early self-Christmas-present.

For a Becker, great knife worth the money for sure, https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B00BBJI9PW/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1511425783&sr=8-1&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_QL65&keywords=kbar+becker+knife&dpPl=1&dpID=41L3PrBWYlL&ref=plSrch

Spyderco knives, my personal favourite for relatively inexpensive quality folders. Check out the tenacious in particular its only £49 (yes I did the conversion for you) and it's an excellent knife, mines going strong 2 years later
https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/s/ref=is_s_ss_i_0_4?k=spyderco&sprefix=kbar&crid=382PF9VOSSUVS

And a uk based website selling tonnes of quality stuff , check out ESEE knives, they also sell mora knives, Opinel knives and tones more.
https://www.knivesandtools.co.uk

I hate to see someone without good knives. Now Buy yourself some awesome stuff. Trust me you will not regret it.

u/hufsaa · 2 pointsr/knives

THis maybe a long shot and it isn't made by a small family anymore, but maybe he was searching for a Mercator? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mercator_K55K It's a classy and durable design suitable for a gentleman. http://www.amazon.com/Mercator-Knives-Black-Lockback-Handles/dp/B004GEGB0Y though it seems to be too cheap for your price range. Any chance the dude is from NYC?

Hey, it's close.

u/dbmeed · 2 pointsr/knives

Personally Id go for a Seal Pup because I love the feel of SOG handles, but that might be a bit too tacticool for your tastes.
Maybe a more traditional Ka-Bar?

u/ApocSurvivor713 · 2 pointsr/fountainpens

I like my Schrade tactical pen. It's really cool looking, sorta an old style flat top look, and made entirely from milled aluminum as far as I can tell. I'm pretty sure the nib unit is the same thing that goes it a lot of Jinhaos, but it's perfectly serviceable, and if you don't like it it should take any number 6 nib. The cap takes some force to unscrew, but that's probably for the best. I've dropped mine a couple times, and while it's lost some ink into the cap, I've not seen any real damage to the nib, and I can't think of anything that could possibly happen in normal usage that would destroy the body or the cap. There are several that seem to be marketed, I own this one, but in black, and can attest to its quality to some degree.

u/ItIsOnlyRain · 2 pointsr/knives
u/UncleKerosene · 2 pointsr/backpacking

Moras are very capable.

Clearing brush is more like cutting than chopping (in my terminology). A thin blade is light and sails through the stuff. I like a short 12" machete like a Tramontina or Imacasa. Gotta sharpen them though. From the factory, they're kinda silly.

I don't do fires on the trail, but for firewood chores, you can't beat a small hatchet. Baton one of those-- it's like a splitting wedge.

I do admit that big knives are fun. I've done some yardwork with this one:

http://www.amazon.com/Ka-Bar-Heavy-Bowie-Knife-Large/dp/B009XN20G2

But something like this next one carries a lot nicer and is plenty tough to beat on.

Nice Deejo, I have the same one for when I dress up. As for simplifying, try to get pieces that do more then just one task. For instance you could combine the role of knife and emergency tool with a Benchmade Triage. Also better key organization could help.

u/wetked · 1 pointr/Survival

I have the ESEE 6 and it can easily be used to baton, even with some fairly large logs. It is also large enough that it can be used like a hatchet for limbing small branches. It has also been decent enough at smaller tasks like feather sticks and cleaning small game/fish. It's not quite as easy to use as a smaller knife for some tasks and not as nice as a hatchet in some tasks, but it will do everything good enough all the time and is really nice if I can only take one item.

I've got a few you might like:

(None of these links are referral ones, by the way)

Dirt cheap.

Nice knife, it holds an edge. I used it for a long time until I upgraded.

A bit more expensive.

Not as slim but a nice knife for the price.

In your price range

This is a great knife for the price, it will hold and edge and it is pretty slim.

There are other versions of this knife, you might like the Recon Mini

If you can spend the extra money, then I recommend this one to you.

It's a great knife, you can go without sharpening it for weeks and it will shave hairs off your arm, assisted opening, and it's a decent size for carrying.

If you wear a long shirt, no one will see the clip in your pocket.

Hi and welcome! Here are some ideas:

Opinel (as you already know)

Svord (as /u/Zickefoose suggested)

Douk Douk - not wood handled

Mercator Cat Knife - again, not wood-handled

Kiridashi - brass-handled, but still beautiful & functional

Case Sodbuster - not wood handled

Higo no Kami - brass handle & I can't personally vouch for this manufacturer, but there are several manufacturers out there

These largely don't meet your criteria on the handle material, but I think they should present some options in your price range that may be attractive.

u/Itsgoodsoup · 1 pointr/Gunsforsale
u/Miggy_wiggy · 1 pointr/knives

yeah I stopped carrying that now that I've started a different job been running with a smith and wesson swat not the greatest knife but it gets the job done not to mention they're cheap so I don't mind losing it.

u/smallbatchb · 1 pointr/knives

If you're open to fixed blades they're generally a bit cheaper due to less materials/manufacturing. Just a thought.

Try a Douk Douk or a Mercator for solid, old school, working style knives.

Look into Cold Steel. They're not my favorite brand but they make solid products, have a lot of budget friendly options, and have a pretty wide array of different styles and patterns.

My GF prefers things purple. So when I got a knife she chose a purple leek to match my black.

When we were shopping for AR15 she expressed a strong interest in having a pink one of her own.

So...yes?

yes. I'm going to get it in orange and purple.

I use a pullsaw and a big knife or axe. I have an Esee 6, though I've used a Fiskars X7 in the past, and I'm currently lusting over a Skrama.

Anything else is too much. Truthfully, an axe is mostly unnecessary. You can cut logs with the pullsaw and split them into firewood by batoning with the knife.

u/SJToIA · 1 pointr/knifeclub

The KaBar Heavy Bowie is another one you might consider. Owned one for a short while, but never tested it out. It's very big and beefy, and gets very good reviews.

u/[deleted] · 1 pointr/motorcycles

You on-road or off? If off, an entire spare wheel with rubber is a must, and a folding rigid workpad made out of something stiff that's bigger than the bike is also a must.

Also, your own patch kit, including borers to clean the hole, plugs, and liquid rubber. No $10 gas station crap, but something you could use in a shop to patch tires all day.

Map your trip and have a paper copy on the bike. If you're leaving 911 coverage, know emergency contact #s.

Your passport NEVER, EVER, EVER, EVER, EVER, EVER leaves your person. People say "yeah," and then leave it on a hotel dresser inside their locked room while they sleep, because it's still "with" them. No. You will forget it. Someone will take it. It will get knocked down. You'll leave the bag it's in in the bathroom. Hey, hotel's on fire! Did you remember to grab it out of your toiletry bag as you ran screaming?

I recently spent 6 days out of country, and when I say it never left me, I mean it lived in a front pocket, came into the bathroom with me, and I slept in pants with it still in pocket. And that's not even anal enough for some. Folks that travel to sketchier places use an IWB passport belt or pouch that is secured to their person.

Also on my person at all times (except where not allowed by law) is a knife. Nothing scary, nothing tacticool, just an assisted-open knife. i've had this one as a daily-carry for a couple of years now, and like it enough to give it to friends and take the time to review it on Amazon.

u/tomtim90 · 1 pointr/AskReddit

Smith and Wesson S.W.A.T. is a great choice. I love that knife. If your state has one and you qualify, it get a concealed weapons permit (aka CCW, CWL) and buy a compact pistol if you really want to have protection. I personally carry a Glock 19 9mm, but a small 38 special revolver or .380 pocket pistol would do the trick. Don't bring a knife to a gun fight. If you want more info about concealed weapons check out /r/CCW.

u/MaximumEffort433 · 1 pointr/politics

Throwing knives are MY hobby!!

I don't know if you've just picked the hobby up, but I've got some suggestions for knives, just because I'm really excited to find someone else who likes them too:

Schrade SCTK3CP These are like cheating, it's damn near impossible to not get these knives to stick.

Cold Steel 80STK12 is a nice hefty knife, great for spin or no spin throwing, also the thud is extremely satisfiying.

United Cutlery United Throwing Triple Knife these were my first knives, and I still love them. They're great for spin throwing, and they look wicked. I don't know why they only have 1 star on Amazon, cuz I love mine.

Anyway, yes, knife throwing is fun, definitely a good alternative to a punching bag.

Clockwise from center:

  1. Keys w Shard tool
    • I've carried the shard for about a year now. I've used it for all of it's intended purposes, except wire-stripping (which I doubt it could do very well)

  2. Gerber Remix.
    • Carried this knife for about 2 years, never had an issue with it. It's still sharp as fuck, and can be easily opened and closed with one hand, quickly if need be. I know gerber gets a lot of (dumb and unnecessary) hate on this sub, but I've never had one not perform for me. I recently ordered the tanto style remix, excited to try it.

  3. Ray Ban prescription sunglasses

  4. M&P Shield 9mm
    • This is my CCW

  5. Walther PPQ M1
    • This is the 'in the car' gun. I prefer the M1 paddle style mag release over the M2 button style. Also, this is the best handgun I've ever fired. I don't have enough good things to say about it.
  • Not pictured: Surefire light, don't remember the model, but a car gun without a light is pretty irresponsible if you ask me.
