Was thinking the same thing.
Here's a cheap 4K Camera with good reviews that looks like it can be put on a chest mount of helmet, gopro style
Edit: It actually appears to use the same form factor and be compatible with all gopro accessories. How have I never heard of this before?
https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B01HGM33HG/ref=mp_s_a_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1495984975&sr=8-2&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_FMwebp_QL65&keywords=akaso
The do the same job for a way better price.
Looking for a decent point and shoot digital camera that can go underwater, shoots video, and is pretty durable. Something similar to the Olympus TG-4. Someone recommended it to me but I would like to compare other products. Thank you!!
Don't get something stealthy, get something super conspicuous. I never get harassed now that I have a big, doofy camera sticking out the top of my helmet. Amazon has some cheap Gopro knockoffs that work well for commutes. I'm using the $60 "FitFort" model, which came with a mount, waterproof housing, and four batteries.
Edit: This guy, basically
> I cant afford another gopro. :(
adequate alternative - better than nothing.
I carry a pro DSLR with 70-200 and a 24-70... the body, lenses etc... tip the scales around 9lbs so most people wouldn't call it "portable"
I also carry a Panasonic Lumix TS5 waterproof/rugged camera. Most of the time, this is the one I have handy in a pocket. It takes decent stills and video, but the best part is that I don't worry about it getting damaged from being dropped, or dunked during a water crossing (my DSLR is in a drybag in my pack if I'm going over water). It's great when I'm out during the winter, easy enough to use without taking off my gloves. I use it in the ocean when snorkeling, kayaking, ice climbing, really great camera.
However, today I'd pick up an Olympus TG-4 instead of the Lumix TS6. The TG-4 is a much better all-around camera, on par with most point and shoots now. But more importantly, it supports RAW format which the TS6 doesn't.
We had a set of GoPros... but we never really got any interesting footage. And while I didn't mind editing video, the audio was always annoyingly bad so I had to add a soundtrack, and mixing isn't my forte. So one is sitting in a closet, gave the other away.
I've thought about getting an RX100, one of my friends posts some awesome footage from his alpine hikes taken with the RX100. I'd consider one, but I do like the benefits of the waterproof/tough cameras.
Good luck!
I would ditch the GoPro. Now hear me out before the downvote. I love my GoPro, both of them. They are great for attaching to a bike, suction cupping to the side of a racecar, etc. With those extreme uses out of the way, in my opinion, it's a horrible camera. Changing modes is a pain, and knowing which camera mode will work best is a guess. For pictures, you can't even be sure you're lined up with what you want without the LCD or cell phone app. You can't review what you just recorded or took a picture of, so you're left hoping for the best. All this, and battery life sort of sucks.
For sub $300, you can pick up a waterproof point and shoot that, for example has 15mp, HD videos, built in wifi to transfer photos, a LCD display, 5x zoom, etc: http://www.amazon.com/Nikon-COOLPIX-Waterproof-Digital-Camera/dp/B00B7N997O
...but again, it's all in what you are happy with. I've seen several videos of people who recorded their whole vacation with a GoPro and they came out awesome. I'm just saying that myself, for the easy of using a decide, I would never depend on a GoPro.
It's a piece of crap: https://www.amazon.com/GoPro-Commerce-Entry-Limited-Accessories/dp/B01MSUJ6EI/
But I bought a long long time ago for even less than it is now.
I would recommend a knock off GoPro like this: https://www.amazon.com/AKASO-EK7000-Sports-Waterproof-Camcorder/dp/B01HGM33HG/
Or just saving up for a modern used GoPro for roughly the same price.
My pond is 5 feet deep, about 5000 gallons, turtles, fish, etc. I had same problem and solved it by buying and installing underwater cameras and hooking to my existing surveillance system. With this setup we watch inside from the comfort of our tv.
I bought them from Amazon and had them up for a year. Super happy with them.

Here is a post I did with one of the videos so you can get an idea:

Good luck!
Apeman A80
Cheap GoPro imitation.
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01LMVIS18/
You can mount it on your handlebars or top cap.
Nikon AW110. The picture quality isn't earthshattering, but it's very solid for a point and shoot. The great thing is I've taken it snowboarding, snorkeling, backpacking, etc.
It can probably take as much abuse as you can, so you can take it on any adventure. And it'll snap (arguably) the best pictures of any adventure camera.
You have the [AKASO EK7000] (https://www.amazon.com/AKASO-Waterproof-Camcorder-Rechargeable-Batteries/dp/B01LMVIS18/ref=as_li_ss_tl?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1483996762&sr=1-6&keywords=gopro&refinements=p_36:5000-15000&linkCode=ll1&tag=dimz04-20&linkId=55528d8b0c335c9e4c6afa8884306d0e) has a 4.6 star rating on amazon, camera quality is pretty decent for its price even in low lighting.
I have a buddy that says doing this has helped him progress most. Instead of phone or shelling out for a goPro (if you dont already have one) he just used one of thoe goPro knock offs on Amazon ( https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07BF76DSX/ref=gbps_tit_s-5_5baf_b85fd3cc?smid=A1GFGUIQT7X8JF&pf_rd_p=a7e1c818-e7bc-4318-ae47-1f5300505baf&pf_rd_s=slot-5&pf_rd_t=701&pf_rd_i=gb_main&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_r=738K2PQ5F1628TZFSW8V )
You could try this camera. It looks like it has the same mount as a gopro! https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07QX7GGTB/ref=sspa_dk_detail_2?psc=1&pd_rd_i=B07QX7GGTB&pd_rd_w=96GEy&pf_rd_p=8a8f3917-7900-4ce8-ad90-adf0d53c0985&pd_rd_wg=0hfWF&pf_rd_r=9QQDD6SDRB9ND84HW95C&pd_rd_r=92447418-7525-11e9-88f1-c5c4d7a27c00
Under $100? Why not try Trawo by apeman. I got an a80 and I thought it was quite enough for me, even though it's not a true 4K. I heard its trawo is cheaper now. It supports electronic image stabilization (EIS) in 4k. I don't how the stabilization works. Maybe you can learn more here: https://www.amazon.com/APEMAN-Underwater-Waterproof-Ultra-Wide-Stabilization/dp/B07DN6VQRC/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1542247512&sr=8-1&keywords=trawo
I looked over a lot of different cameras and reviews when searching for mine. I ended up buying probably the cheapest which is an AKASO.
Xiaoyi is also a good option.
The advantage over a phone camera is that you can just set them down and capture the entire room. The only downside is that the battery lasts for about 1.5 hours which is probably just right for taking BJJ vids.
Everyone rolling captured with AKASO
Camera is the EK7000 i bought for vacation on Amazon last year.
Mount is one of these GoPro chin mounts
I'm sorry for not posting a price, I updated the post. I'm in college so it might be a little hard for me to swing for a Go-Pro. I'd like to stay under $100. https://www.amazon.com/AKASO-EK7000-Sports-Waterproof-Camcorder/dp/B01HGM33HG/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1494698605&sr=8-4&keywords=helmet%2Bcamera&th=1 maybe this one?
Sorry friend,
My dumb ass didn't correctly read your question and was focused on the helmet.
Here is the camera. Came with lots of accessories:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01HGM33HG/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o06_s02?ie=UTF8&psc=1
The next model up is $10 more and has image stabilization. Probably worth it but i do like the one i have.
Apologies for sending you a helmet link for a camera question.
I agree with hours as another user suggested. Or ground school if she hasn't taken that. If you want to stick with the camera I have had good luck with this camera which is a GoPro knockoff and a heck of a lot cheaper:
https://smile.amazon.com/APEMAN-Underwater-Waterproof-Ultra-Wide-Stabilization/dp/B07DN6VQRC/ref=mp_s_a_1_3?keywords=trawo+4k+action+camera&qid=1564784507&s=gateway&sprefix=Trawo&sr=8-3
I have an AW100 Link is the new model.
It a great camera for outdoors. I kayak with it and it takes bumps and falls well. Pictures are pretty good for a point and shoot.
I think the Olympus I got my mom is much better though Olympus 820 I bought her that because he likes to drop things and let the kids play with the camera. I know it can take the abuse and the picture quality is better than my AW100.
I got this one for $34. incl. shipping not sure why it went up in price, but for what I paid, it is a great camera with lots of extras. Definitively worth what I paid for it and for what I'm planning on using it for.
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07FXG151H/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
I just bought a ContourHD from amazon for 100 dollars:
http://www.amazon.com/Contour-1300-ContourHD-Helmet-Camera/dp/B002QGSYZ4/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1320071978&sr=8-1
They are selling really cheap right now because the company just released a bunch of new ones with features I don't care about (submersible, GPS tracking, etc).
But this one has 1080P HD at 30fps and 720P at 60FPS, along with a removable battery. The new versions have an integrated battery, so the entire unit needs to be charged.
I got this for my 5 year old a couple weeks ago after doing a bit of research. There already aren't a ton of tough cameras and there are even fewer good ones. I think I narrowed it down to ~2-3 and the [Olympus TG-4] (http://www.amazon.com/Olympus-Waterproof-Digital-Camera-3-Inch/dp/B00UKV5E4Q) took the top spot.
The time from button press to picture taken was one of the other key things I was looking at and reviews said this camera focused fast. Scrolling through his photos, a lot of them are actually in focus so I think it is doing its job nicely. [This] (http://imgur.com/oPVuHPD) is an example image he took at a playground. Nothing special about it at all, except maybe it doesn't look like it was taken by a 4.5 year old.
I had one of these in the philippines
https://www.amazon.com/APEMAN-Waterproof-Underwater-Rechargeable-Accessories/dp/B07FXG151H/ref=sr_1_6?keywords=apeman+underwater&qid=1564730940&s=gateway&sr=8-6

behaved really well had it down to below 30 meters not as good quality images as the Olypus TG5 I've got now but for $40 it's insane.

Lets put it this way I wouldn't say a GoPro is 10 times better!
I'd say get one and see how you get on and decide what you like and what you hate and what you want to use an underwater camera for and go from there
Check the deals section of Amazon. I often see cameras like this one showing in there with a nice discount.
https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B07HP18CWC/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_IDHXCbQX521Q1
You get tons of accessories as well, including one bike mount.
Alacaksan amazon italyadan al siktir et amerika amazonu. 420 euroya gelir bu da son kıyağım olsun arv https://www.amazon.it/dp/B07YGSXVB8
Every side-by-side I found it appears to be more of a HDR type effect with the EK7000. Could be some rendering done before the upload though but if you youtube the camera, you will see most, if not all videos have those bright colors to it. Looking at the videos, I would definitely say it is nicer than the gopro comparison but again, I don't own either so I am not sure if there's some touch ups before the uploads.
With the price of the EK7000, if the reviews are good you can't go wrong for entry level.
Edit: It's 4.5 stars with 4,220 reviews. BUY IT!

Harvey did a nice number on the lakes around here and I'm skeptical to get the boat out. Still lots of crap (people's docks and trees and what-not) that are just submerged below the water since it's so bloody high.
The one lake I have 100% confidence in is currently closed until the 14th. Feelsbadman, but I'm still excited that we're coming up on Fall! It's going to be a good year for bass, I can feel it.
Edit: This is the FauxPro I bought. It's actually super awesome for the price. I'm mega surprised. Takes as good as video as my Sony action cam.
Not sure what your spending limit is, but I would suggest this digital camera and he can take all the pictures of that he wants-
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004FLL5C2/ref=cm_cd_asin_lnk
I currently have this https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B01HGM33HG
It comes with a waterproof case that has a strap that can attach to it. I loop the strap in the gaps of my helmet and it fastens it in place on the top of my head.
the chin position looks like it gets in the way of rider's field of view. also people say this camera is pretty similar to the gopro and fits the gopro mount: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01HGM33HG
[I am getting this one] (https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B01FQY8984/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pC_nS_ttl?_encoding=UTF8&colid=2X9UC8ES15PDJ&coliid=IC5IE979CK3VP)
I didn't buy a back up, I bought an upgrade and then my regular camera became my back up.
I did buy a discontinued version of the Olympus Tough camera to take on some foreign travel when I didn't want my DSLR (and it ended up raining a lot so the waterproofness was nice) and it could withstand the beach and hiking and stuff. https://www.amazon.com/Olympus-Waterproof-Digital-Camera-3-Inch/dp/B00UKV5E4Q
Instead of 5 throwaway cameras, how about one waterproof/dustproof digital? Amazon's got one for $80-
http://www.amazon.com/Kodak-EasyShare-Waterproof-Digital-Camera/dp/B004FLL5C2/
I picked up a pair of these GoPro knockoffs and they're actually pretty damned good cameras. They don't have image stabilization, which makes them iffy for bike use though.
https://www.amazon.com/Portable-KAMRE-Detection-Security-Activities/dp/B075VM6TQ5/ref=sr_1_51?ie=UTF8&qid=1527308696&sr=8-51&keywords=gadget
Would something like this work or is there something specific I should look for?
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01HGM33HG/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o03_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1
My recommendation, had for 6 months works pretty damn good, have as a chin mount
I use the Barlus underwater camera and it works pretty well
https://www.amazon.com/Barlus-Underwater-Camera-Stainless-Special/dp/B07CY12ZRR
I have one for my goldfish pond and one for my koi pond. Now I can watch them on my phone!
There are a lot of Action Cameras on Amazon under $100. I have never tried one out myself, but you may be able to search the reviews or see if anyone has tried them out. Something such as this
I'm looking at purchasing the same, do you have/know someone with a postage/drug scale and weigh the camera? My hope is I can replace the syma cam with [this cheap "4K" cam. ](AKASO EK7000 4K WIFI Sports Action Camera Ultra HD Waterproof DV Camcorder 12MP 170 Degree Wide Angle https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01HGM33HG/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_JxQBybSXHKCES)
Has anyone tried/thought if this modification?
Edit: BTW, I received a syma for Christmas that looks exactly like X8g (was Red) but the action cam could link up to my phone for fpv (camera looked the same as other x8g's) the problem was the nuts/caps that secure rotors had no threads, only "pressed" onto rotor shaft loose enough that one would fly off as soon as motors fired up - causing the blade to do the same. I returned the drone to Costco and continued to search the web for a replacement until I decided to get the x8g on Amazon (basically the same minus fpv feature). Oddly, I was unable to find the Costco model ANYWHERE online.
So 2 questions:
1.) does your x8g have any similar issues? How are the "caps" on yours?
2.) does anyone know if Costco sells defective merchandise sometimes, almost like a Nike outlet?
For storage like kayaking to a camping spot or something? A Pelican or Nanuk case.
For actual use... Man I'd just buy a Fuji XP1140 or maybe an Olympus TG-5. For a good case for a Leica, you're looking at a lot of money. A Fuji XP140 is $220, a Leica M underwater housing (Housing being probably the safest option to keep it safe) is $5000.
Also you can get a contour HD off amazon for 129.99 with free shipping.
here
Amazon has it too if you rather buy it from them.
The ContourHD is currenly on sale for $149, it's as good (more sleek IMHO): http://www.amazon.com/Contour-1300-ContourHD-Camera/dp/B002QGSYZ4/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1312324227&sr=8-1
Pricing: less than $150
Having seen this post I'm considering pulling the trigger myself..
Pick this bad boy up. 1080p and alot less bulky. Ive had mine for 6 months WORKS AMAZING!
http://www.amazon.com/ContourHD-1080p-Full-Helmet-Camera/dp/B002QGSYZ4/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1301057355&sr=8-1
Oddly enough, I've heard from 2 people that this was a decent budget action cam. YMMV. I haven't used it, but check the reviews. May be a good option. I would chest mount it and just enjoy the trip. AKASO EK7000 4K WIFI Sports Action Camera Ultra HD Waterproof DV Camcorder 12MP 170 Degree Wide Angle https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01HGM33HG/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_sHCfzbR0DEKX3
When you and I see "4k camera" we probably both think "expensive".. but ahh..
https://www.amazon.com/Lightdow-LD-4K-12-40M-Sports-Upgrade/dp/B015XC6XUK/ref=sr_1_8?s=photo&ie=UTF8&qid=1494949416&sr=1-8&keywords=4k+action+camera
That's $29.00 USD. Now granted, it's probably not great.. but on Amazon, there are a bunch of 4k action cameras for under $80.00 USD.
Here's one for $42.00 .. just to further show you how they are low in price.
https://www.amazon.com/Waterproof-Control-Underwater-Accessories-Portable/dp/B01IX8O308/ref=sr_1_12?s=photo&ie=UTF8&qid=1494949416&sr=1-12&keywords=4k+action+camera
Figure bulk purchase price of a camera, or that the camera and drone are owned by the same parent company, and you can imagine the price shrinking.
I happen to own a GoPro knockoff and it records my adventure races just fine! Great quality, and might've cost me $50.00 USD about 1.5 years ago.
I think you'd be surprised at the quality of a picture taken from a drone with even a decent camera.
You could use your phones inside the car and shoot in 4K.
For external, you could get some cheap GoPro knock offs for outside (something like this):
AKASO EK7000 4K WiFi Sports Action Camera Ultra HD Waterproof DV Camcorder 12MP 170 Degree Wide Angle https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01HGM33HG/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_1N1ACbPMXZ8SQ
How lit is it around your car? You could get something like This
and put it on dashcam mode, as long as you have a car lighter socket that's got power it will record for 10 minutes, start a new recording and record another 10 minutes. Once the card is full it just goes and records over the oldest file. I have a 32gb card that holds around 12 hours of footage.
RX100 (any generation) plus a GoPro since you mentioned water (or the cheap Chinese brand action cameras are pretty good)
I bought one of these faux pros after looking at footage online. its a solid under $100 camera!
https://www.amazon.com/AKASO-EK7000-Sports-Waterproof-Camcorder/dp/B01HGM33HG/ref=sr_1_7?s=photo&ie=UTF8&qid=1488091903&sr=1-7&keywords=action+camera
Looks to be sub $100..
https://smile.amazon.com/AKASO-EK7000-Sports-Waterproof-Camcorder/dp/B01HGM33HG?sa-no-redirect=1
I'm not sure which one Swaggles is talking about, but the Akaso EK7000 is incredible for $80. It can do 4K/25, 2.7K/30, and 1080P/60. It also has wifi for live view and supports the same mounts as a GoPro. I love mine.
Edit: it's also a bit lighter weight than a GoPro so hopefully your flight times would increased.
Hmm, that's interesting that there is such a high markup since it's Canada.
You might consider this one, shoots 4k which gives you a lot more to work with when editing (cropping etc), comes with a case, shoots 1080p 60 FPS. There's a ton more reviews on the US Amazon.
Both work with GoPro accessories, so you could get an accessories kit for CAD $15.
I have one of these
I think I got a mid-range model for like $150-$200.
IMO, you don't really need the phone/app connectivity, and the streaming. It's nice, but a majority of the time you're looking at video, it's on a computer, to edit it or watch it. So cutting away all that extra tech, form-factor is the next most important thing. I still cannot understand how folks can do things with those boxy Go-pros on their heads, guys show up to hockey with them periodically. Mounting it on a bike, that makes more sense to me. But for helmets, I like these slim tube-shaped cameras. They're out of the way, don't catch the wind and drag on my helmet/head, and get the job done.
Suggestion: get two cameras, of different styles/types to try em both out. A buddy of mine strapped his GoPro to his ass end on his bike in a group ride, and I've seen guys strap smaller ones to the pegs. Kind of like the idea of a helmet cam as well as a mounted cam, getting two angles from the same shoot. Amazon makes re-sale pretty easy and with minimal loss, I've found.
I purchased this and for the price it's great. I can now watch my fish while at work.
https://www.amazon.com/GoPro-HERO8-Black-Waterproof-Stabilization/dp/B07WSRXMS8
Any reason to buy a GoPro for $400 vs something like this for $90? I always assumed GoPro was the only real option but some of the reviews have me thinking.
