FYI Wheel locks are enough to ussually deter someone from stealing your wheels and they are pretty cheap.

$63 for a brand new one on Amazon.

Reality is, it's better to just use it on your own car... what are they gonna do? Boot it again?

If you wanna be stealthy, just scratch it up, or if you're really hardcore spray a stenciled "PPA" on the side but that's not common.

u/jongreengon · 10 pointsr/washingtondc

Not really a rite of passage but you live in a major city...there is always gunna be that risk. Lower your risk by keeping even loose change hidden from view. Also, since I’ve seen several people have their wheels jacked in Bloomingdale specifically i would pick up a set of lock lug nuts just in case. https://www.amazon.com/Gorilla-Automotive-71631NBC-Chrome-Thread/dp/B002809QXW/ref=asc_df_B002809QXW/?tag=hyprod-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=312146907045&hvpos=1o1&hvnetw=g&hvrand=11749705930985817337&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=m&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9061285&hvtargid=pla-504007248407&psc=1

Same principle as a stud installer

u/justinedd · 5 pointsr/GolfGTI

The Neuspeed RSe10 website (linked here) says that late model VW and Audi center caps will not fit, and that they recommend buying a different model from VW. Specifically VW cap part #: 3B7 601 171. I found 3 quick links, one from Amazon(priced per), one from ECS Tuning(priced per), and one from UPS Motorsports(priced for a set of 4).

Wheels are nice, but I'd look into getting proper wheel caps. The mismatch is just odd. I can't say for sure exactly what size you need, but I'm sure you could get some that match or are a custom unbranded design.

u/See3D · 3 pointsr/Portland

If anything, get a wheel lock. Master lock makes a good 4 prong one that I used back on my Ford when I lived in Texas (they too are easy to steal with shaved keys and power tools). If anything, start with that. Other people have mentioned installing a kill switch, but that's a little beyond my skill set.

u/ClintHammer · 3 pointsr/Justrolledintotheshop

That's why I said to slip a nickel under them. Also it doesn't take much weight to throw off balance. Look at how light wheel weights are. A quarter ounce will screw you all up at 80 mph and make your ride rough as hell

Buying and mounting/Balancing MC tires is one of the most repetitive & costly parts of owning a motorcycle. The more you ride the more it becomes apparent. First world problem, the more bikes you own the more it hurts. Granted not something one needs to do everyday, but one that the tools can often pay for themselves the first time out depending on your location. It's getting harder and harder to find shops that will do carry in wheels/tires at reasonable prices in many areas. Locally the going rate here over the last 20 years has crept up from about $10-20 a pair to $20-$50 each with some dealers being closer to $60.

A simple setup can be done for about $50

A not fancy usable set of spoons/rim savers for $19

A simple set of balance cones that will work for most applications $30

Yes you can spend more and typically the more you spend the easier the job gets. You can go from simple spoons to manual changers with bead breakers and tire bars like the Mojo lever that make faster and easier work of the job and higher quality balancers like a Marc Parnes unit or ones that have their own stand. I use a static balancer/truing stand with a set of Marc Parnes cones and sourced my own tool steel axle.

I learned with tire spoons(I was probably 8-10 years old on my own stuff on the farm), as I got older(12ish) the shop(indy MC shop) let me use the manual tire machine until they purchased a powered rim clamp machine 3-4 years later and I eventually bought my own as I took it up as a career. Moved on to another career but I still have most of my tools/equipment.

I did tires for years with nothing more than spoons, a basic balancer/truing stand at home.

99% of my vandwelling is in urban areas. Usually not in the worst neighborhoods but there still is crime.

Last year someone smashed one of the windows in my van. They also smashed the windows of 2 other vehicles that were parked nearby at the same time.

To try to prevent the actual theft of my van, I have a lock that goes from the brake pedal to the steering wheel, and a 4-pronged steering wheel lock.

Brake pedal lock: http://www.amazon.com/Hook-Pedal-Steering-Wheel-Lock/dp/B000JIND4S

Steering wheel lock: http://www.amazon.com/Master-Lock-252DATAPK-Advanced-Security/dp/B00008J2DP

I also have a car alarm system with a remote that I bought on eBay. If the doors open the alarm goes off. I drilled a small hole in part of my dash to install the included flashing LED light that lets criminals know that my van has an alarm and it is activated.

It came with one dual stage shock sensor but I found that the length of my van required me to purchase an extra dual stage shock sensor to provide coverage for the rear of my van.

I keep the alarm turned on while I am inside sleeping at night. The sensors don't go off when I move around inside. When there are drunk people leaning against my van I can use the remote to make the alarm chirp a couple of times and that always moves them away.

I bought a Scytek G20 car alarm for $29.99:

I also bought an extra dual stage shock sensor for less than $10:

http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_odkw=dual+stage+shock+sensor&_from=R40%7CR40%7CR40%7CR40%7CR40&_osacat=0&_from=R40&_trksid=p2045573.m570.l1313.TR0.TRC0.H0.Xomega+dual+stage+shock+sensor&_nkw=omega+dual+stage+shock+sensor&_sacat=0

You're screwed with these as they prevent exactly this from happening. The outer part of the lug spins freely. Good to keep thieves at bay, bad if you lose the key.

Update seems its 12x1.5 for thread size per flyinmiata's site.

$56 for wheel locks?!

I just got these

u/Ninonskio · 2 pointsr/fordranger

They are aluminum, Ill see if I can find them online and link them, but my buddy originally bought them and sold them to me. Like I said, theyve been on my ranger, my explorer, and his jeep as well. I highly recommend them, if youre interested in the stance. You do need an alignment afterwards though.

Edit: These pretty much look exactly like mine. Im not sure about the great handling it says it gives, but my wheel turn radius is pretty nice.

u/bilged · 2 pointsr/Fixxit

Harbor freight bead breaker is only $14. Totally worth it. Also to balance the tires, I picked up this one from amazon and mounted it on two jack stands. Works great.

As for the tire changing process, I use the zip tie method for mounting the new tire. I don't particularly like it for removing the old tire. Also make sure the tires are warmed up before you start. They will be so much more stretchy and flexible.

I bought an aftermarket set on Amazon for $25. They look great in my opinion: https://imgur.com/a/30q9kqG

This is the set I bought, but of course Amazon is saying they are currently unavailable: Tesla Model 3, S & X Aero Wheel Cap Kit White (4 Hub Center Cap + 20 Lug Nut Cover) (grey) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07W3WXP2K/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_tai_C9mGDb8DWQY0V

There are other sets for similar prices on Amazon however.

Trucker here. I park my work truck in a line with all the rest. Everyone has a key since all the trucks are keyed the same. One time I was lazy and left some stuff in my truck. Someone too my phone charger, One of my two fifth wheel pull bars, and 2 snack packs of cheese crackers. I think I was more insulted that they took my crackers. Like dude, are you that hungry man? I would have given him some crackers if he asked.

u/NatakuNox · 1 pointr/videos

I would buy a boot and go over to the Homeco's owners house and boot his car.

Edit: They are cheaper than the $75 ticket https://smile.amazon.com/Coocheer-Heavy-duty-Wheel-Anti-theft-large/dp/B019RLTPYY/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1484560166&sr=8-1&keywords=car+boot

Zane's Adjustable Vehicle Wheel Shield for Detailing https://www.amazon.com/dp/B004QTKDVM?ref=yo_pop_ma_swf

That’s for the rims and inside of the wheel to keep any mess on the trims them selves. And with the control nozzle on the gun, it’s a small fan, only about 2”, so it’s very controllable to keep any build up any where else.

Andddd I do this for myself, I’m not a professional detailer or have a shop or earn a living from this. I just plain old love having an extremely well kept vehicle; both inside and out.

The cheap way is to buy a set of wheel locks

  1. Place on car.
  2. Remove all air from tires.
u/[deleted] · 1 pointr/AutoDetailing

It’s actually not a problem at all. The spray from the gun is strong enough where it doesn’t go every where and it’s pretty dead on.

As to keep the wheels from getting any on it, I use this from Zane’s Zane's Adjustable Vehicle Wheel Shield for Detailing https://www.amazon.com/dp/B004QTKDVM?ref=yo_pop_ma_swf

It's called a "wheel lock," if you're looking for what they're called in general. But even if you know what brand, they make multiple key patterns so you can't just get a generic replacement.

Hopefully you can find the key somewhere in the car -- there are other ways to get a wheel lock off but finding the original key is your best bet.
