The post from /u/dcwrite has a link to BestBuy for a switch.
When buying a switch, get anything, just look for something that says "gigabit" or "10/100/1000". Count the number of connections you have in the closet and get a switch that has the same number or greater ports.
Here is one on amazon for a nice price -> https://www.amazon.com/TP-Link-Ethernet-Optimization-Unmanaged-TL-SG108/dp/B00A121WN6/
> an ethernet cable running from the router to the wall
Is that the only cable connected to your router? What make/model is your router?
Go through Professor Messer’s CompTIA Network+ videos. They’re free.

If you really want a book, I thought this one was helpful:

Well then that leaves you with three options. You could have a repairman come test and replace the cables in the walls. You could use a device like this that turns your power outlet into a network connection. Or you can go the wireless route using a wifi extender like this and install a wireless card in the computer.
Thanks guys, I decided to go with AC1200 router listed in https://www.amazon.com/TP-LINK-Wireless-Dual-Band-Archer-C50/dp/B0168G0KZY?ie=UTF8&ref_=cm_cr_arp_d_product_top .

This should do the trick, there is better but not with that budget
Addition: This is the actual splitter we are using.
First try different ports, different devices, then check punch downs/ crimps if still have the issue test it with one of these. Network Cable Tester

I noticed that myself. I guess NETGEAR just gave up on those.
Ended up ordering one of these.
Do you think it will be a suitable replacement?
>TP-Link TL-SG108 Switch
looks to be hardware issue with negotiate. i see user reviews with same issue.

Worse than horrible customer service.
I received a defective unit that would not connect to any 100 Mpbs devices. I contacted customer service to get it fixed or replaced.
Here's the response I got;
"Dear Errol,
Many thanks for your valued reply.
Really sorry for the delay in getting back to you as I was off duty yesterday.
It seems that there is something wrong with the speed negotiation between the switch and your 100Mbps devices. In this case, sorry but I'm afraid that we cannot do anything on this switch as it's just plug-and-play.
Your understanding will be highly appreciated.
Have a good day."
That's it. I'm stuck with a broken switch.
I will never buy another TP-Link product again.
