Sorry this will be a lot of information, but when you're buying something that sits on your ears for hours at a time, you want something that feels good.

Newegg has the Gamecom 780 on sale right now for 28 bucks. They usually float around 50-60 bucks so it's a really good deal. The only problem with them is they're not very drop friendly as they're plastic. The audio and mic quality are amazing for the price though.

If wireless is more his speed a Corsair H2100 is in your price range or a Logitech G930. I just recently bought a Corsair VOID on sale for 95 bucks and it was the best decision I've made in a long time, best wireless headset I've used. (but normal price is about 120)

Links:

Gamecom 780 priced 27.99

Corsair H2100 priced 99.99

Logitech G930 priced 84.36

Corsair VOID wireless priced 129.99

Pro's and Cons:

Gamecom 780

  • Pro: One of the best gaming headsets in the $50 range.
  • Pro: Easy to setup software, buttons on headset are easy to reach and use
  • Con: Very prone to breaking, if they fall the wrong way, they're toast
  • Con: Wired, I belive a 6 foot cable. Very limiting in distance (if you buy one of these buy a USB extension as well)

    Corsair H2100

  • Pro: Very good entry wireless headset, clear mic audio and decent sound quality
  • Pro: Wireless so no cables in the way
  • Con: Battery life
  • Con: Distance is short before cutout

    Logitech G930

  • Pro: Easy to use and reliable
  • Pro: Good range on headset (longer than H2100 and roughly same as VOID)
  • Pro: Build quality is nice, audio quality is decent
  • Con: Wireless receivers die before the headset does (will start with randomly dropping connection)
  • Con: Mic gets white noise in it
  • Con: Not very loud/Charge doesn't last long

    Corsair VOID RGB

  • Pro: Strong build quality, clear mic, great battery life
  • Pro: Good quality audio, can go very loud, bass drivers are decent
  • Pro: Long range, Similar to G930
  • Con: Software interferes with some other programs currently, Corsair is working on a fix (The headset does not require the software, it is just used to control simulated surround sound and lighting)
  • Con: Feels loose on your head, the mesh fabric makes it slide against your hair
  • Con: Users have reported turning on/off the headset can sometimes put the headset into a failed mode, and require being plugged into the computer to fix (i have not experienced this and could have been fixed in a firmware update already)

FF tactics is a great one, though it's far inferior to the PSX version.

I can also whole-heartedly recommend Golden Sun, though it's not as deep of an RPG, it's extremely fun. Etrian Odyssey is as hardcore as they come, so it may or may not be your cup of tea. You actually explore and draw your own dungeon maps in it, and the class combinations are nuts.

If you aren't a big fan of JRPGs, you probably won't like The World Ends With You but you'd be doing yourself a great disservice if you skipped it.

There's also Chrono Trigger, which, if you never played it, deserves a chance to be seen. It is definitely an old school JRPG though.

FF3 and FF4 are both great if you like that kind of thing, but if you're not into JRPGs, again, you probably won't enjoy them.

I really loved the most recent Dragon Quest, even though it is decidedly old school and very much a JRPG in the traditional format. But it does a lot of things well, and the class system is deep and rewarding.

Bioware made a Sonic RPG, though I haven't played it so I can't recommend it.

The Castlevania games are all awesome, but they're RPGs like Diablo is an RPG.

Alright, for BG1 and 2 there are more or less 4 essential mods (along with the need for patches).

http://www.amazon.com/Logitech-Wireless-Gaming-Headset-Surround/dp/B003VANOFY/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1325260426&sr=1-1

I've been using these for nearly 6 months they are pretty awesome for gaming. I also have some turtle beaches for my xbox but they just feel cheap the sound quality is nothing compared to my G930 Logitechs the wireless feature is really nice especially if you play WoW(you can stroll around your house whilst still talking on ventrilo/Skype which is handy for those quick sandwich breaks without anyone noticing).

http://www.amazon.com/Ear-Force-Wireless-Headphones-Xbox-360/dp/B004F4BBEG/ref=sr_1_4?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1325260669&sr=1-4

My headphones that I use for my xbox/laptop. If you can afford the G930 Logitechs do get them they are super comfortable even after 8+ hours of gaming and the noise cancellation/surroud sound is amazing. Also about the microphone its really decent quality and there is a handy mute button on the side of the headset that you can easily press if you want to talk to someone without it going through your mic ;)

Edit: Not sure why but they are $139 on US amazon and £139 on the UK amazon( Im from UK and I just noticed the lower cost on US amazon zz)

u/jojotmagnifficent · 3 pointsr/gaming

I recommend getting a good pair of closed stereo Sennhiesers or something similar. Those 5.1 and 7.1 headsets are a gimmick (you hear perfectly fine 3d with only two ear holes don't you?). Couple with them one of those Zalman clip on mics on amazon and you have a sweet gaming setup that's good for music too.

I recommend closed because it gives better isolation (which works both ways, sometimes people don't want to hear what your listening to as well. I remember these and these getting excellent review, although they are both open headphones, so you may want to consider their use environment first. This clip on mic seems to be pretty highly recommended.

I don't think you can beat many of the RPG's for depth (in terms of content, immersion, etc) so I'll stick to those.

Baldur's Gate series, Fallout series (the older ones especially!), Icewind Dale series, Dragon Age, Mass Effect - in short, basically anything from Bioware. If I had to choose one among that list it would probably be Baldur's Gate 2 - it isn't easy to convey how deep the game is so just check it out and see for yourself.

A lot of these games I mentioned are older and are available cheaply in collections (talk about value for money!). You may need to do a little bit of tweaking to run them on Vista or Win 7 but it is easy to find directions online with a little bit of searching:
Baldur's Gate Box Set $19.99 on Amazon.com
Fallout Trilogy $16.61 on Amazon.com
Icewind Dale Collection $20.98 on Amazon.com

I'd probably also recommend Morrowind (from Bethesda) and Oblivion, though I'd recommend Morrowind over Oblivion if you had to pick one.

If RPGs aren't your cup of tea, I also have a short list of shooters that offer tactical depth in single-player and/or develop their game worlds well:
The Orange Box (HL2 + Expansions), Far Cry (trust me on this one it is actually a decently long FPS that can be quite engaging and tactical), Crysis (if you have a strong enough PC to run it, you'll find it offers some very intense and involved firefights).

u/specialk16 · 0 pointsr/gaming

This is precisely with I think places like /v/ have much better conversations than /r/gaming in general. Whenever a movie-videogame thread appears nobody goes into this "better-than-thou" attitude. Everybody knows it's a joke, everyone does it for fun. Nobody is trying to appear all smart and intellectual because they are repeating what's already obvious.

It really is fun to see people speculate about which actors would play which characters, for example.

Also, Bioshock:Rapture is proof enough that quality adaptions are possible as long as you have talented people behind it.

u/[deleted] · 3 pointsr/gaming

Here are a few great older games that have had a lot of influence on some newer titles.

Star Control 2 -
Open world space explorer RPG with fantastic writing and gameplay.
Definite all time favorite and widely considered one of the best games of all time.
If you've played a Mass Effect game, you'll notice some striking similarities. ;)

*It's been ported to both Mac and PC under the name "The Ur-Quan Masters" and is free to download here.

Baldur's Gate 2: Shadows of Amn - Party based, single-player fantasy RPG with a combat system and universe loosely based around the D&D ruleset. The world within the game is surprisingly vast with loads of cool quests and items. The 2D graphic set makes for a smoother gameplay experience than, say, Neverwinter Nights, it's spiritual successor, so it should run like a dream on your netbook. Dragon Age: Origins borrowed a great deal from the Baldur's Gate series.

Available on Amazon along with Baldur's Gate 1 and expansions for both here.

X-Com: UFO Defense - Sci-Fi RTS with RPG and city-builder elements mixed in.

You manage a shadow organization tasked with defending the earth from alien invaders and funded by nations based on your performance in their territories. The goal is to build bases, intercept UFOs, clean up crash sites, defend cities under siege, and eventually go on the offensive. X-Com is often within the top 10 of many "top 100" game lists. There have been many attempts at reviving the success of the franchise with different iterations of the basic gameplay elements, but none have come close to the quality of the original.

X-Com: UFO Defense is available through Steam along with sequels here

might I recommend the excellent bioshock rapture by john shirley?! believe it or not, the audiobook is quite good as well; narrator seems to shift his accent to mold to each decade the chapters take place in. i truly enjoyed both mediums. great prequel story to jump into, as long as you've played some of the games.

u/biezel · 3 pointsr/gaming

The Playstation Gold headset is awesome. Very comfortable, great battery life, great sound and the mic is excellent.

u/BejitaMarius · 2 pointsr/gaming

Not 66% off but 50%. I waited so long and then I did this. Some major retailors honor online price match. Best Buy is one of them. If you have a best buy, Fryes or another company near you that does online price matching. Show them this.

If you are looking for a challenging RPG with a great story, Baldur's Gate is just what you need. It's old school hardcore DnD. Also you can take your character through the first game and import them into Baldur's Gate 2 and take them all the way to level 40 if you get the expansions.

You can easily get 200+ hours out of the games (BG1 + Exp + BG2 +Exp). The graphics are old, but the gameplay still stands up.

http://www.amazon.com/Baldurs-Gate-4-1-Boxset-PC/dp/B000FGA1US/ref=pd_bxgy_vg_text_c

20 bucks, enjoy one of the best RPGs ever made.

edit

In regards to Icewind Dale Series. It's basically the same as Baldur's Gate but the story is much weaker. nonetheless this series is also HIGHLY recommended.

I just got the Logitech G930 which is now on sale for less than I paid for it

http://www.amazon.com/Logitech-Wireless-Gaming-Headset-Surround/dp/B003VANOFY

Great 7.1 headset, fits comfortably and blocks some outside noise. Wireless is pretty awesome if you have never used it.

u/antimatter3009 · 1 pointr/gaming

Last time I played through BG it was on XP and it worked fine for the most part. BG1 was very rough, but you can use the tutu mods to play it with BG2's engine, which was much improved. There's also a widescreen mod that worked well for me.

Also: http://www.amazon.com/Baldurs-Gate-4-1-Boxset-Pc/dp/B000FGA1US/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=videogames&qid=1269630374&sr=8-1

The DS version is the best one to get. Everything from the PS1 version with all the advantages of the SNES version in addition moving all of the menus to the second screen, a fresh translation, an automap, and run enabled by default. It's fucking excellent.

It's also extremely affordable.

u/shadyinternets · 1 pointr/gaming

small disclaimer here, i am a bit of an audio snob so mostly have more expensive gear because i like overpaying for things apparently lol

So, at that price point im really not that sure what is "best" as i dont have a ton of personal experience there other than some audio technica m40x, which are on sale for $80 with no mic on amazon right now. at $80 they are great, but with no mic you would need to spend a bit more.

http://smile.amazon.com/Audio-Technica-ATH-M40x-Professional-Monitor-Headphones/dp/B00HVLUR54/ref=sr_1_cc_1

if you could up your budget just a bit you could add a v moda boom mic that would work with the m40x. it is $30.

http://smile.amazon.com/V-MODA-BoomPro-Microphone-Gaming-Communication/dp/B00BJ17WKK/ref=sr_1_4

any non-usb mic would work too, but the v moda attaches to the headset to keep things nice and tidy. so something like either of these 2 should do the trick and both are under $10. you just have to figure out how to get the mic in place since it isnt designed to attach to a headset straight out the box. the one is a lapel mic so just attach it to your shirt, and the second could possibly be broken down and you could try attaching it to the headset on your own somehow.

http://smile.amazon.com/Microphone-Smartphone-Blusmart-Omnidirectional-Condenser/dp/B01H19E0JE/ref=sr_1_39
http://smile.amazon.com/Connectland-Tabletop-Microphone-Recording-CL-ME-606/dp/B0028Y4DCC/ref=sr_1_7

Or you could try these Hyperx Cloud II's out. i have never tried these, but they are in your price range and they are sort of a chinese knockoff version of the more expensive mmx300s i have. they have a lot of really good reviews though so might be worth a try. even though they arent from an actual headphone manufacturer they apparently are very good for the price point, so could be just right for you.

http://smile.amazon.com/HyperX-Gaming-Headset-Nintendo-Switch/dp/B00SAYCXWG/ref=sr_1_1

you could also pop over to /r/headphones to look for some advice. there are people there with a lot more experience with products across a wider price range so could be somebody who already owns a headphone/mic combo that fits that budget.

u/insanekoz · 1 pointr/gaming

Way too great of a game to miss. If you don't mind playing games with Super Nintendo graphics (I sure as hell don't) Chrono Trigger will hold up today without any problems, though this is also probably due to the stagnant JPRG archetype. But Chrono Trigger is sooo great. Just pick it up for the DS for like $15 on Amazon.

u/jimbo831 · 2 pointsr/gaming

You didn't look very hard:

$40 from NewEgg

$50 from Best Buy

$50 from Amazon

I have never paid more than $40 for a year of Xbox Live. It is always available for that much or less. Most recently, I just bought a new one in March for $35 from Best Buy.

u/unoimalltht · 1 pointr/gaming

Civ5 is a very excellent game.

I'd say that Civ 5 + Brave New World pushes it to the best of the series, however the base game alone is largely flawed in comparison to 4, but still good.

However... iTunes is a rip off. Steam has the game for sale at $30, but regularlly puts it on sale for $5-$10 http://store.steampowered.com/app/8930/

Amazon also frequently sells it for cheap, though if you're on Mac, be careful to search for the correct version:
http://www.amazon.com/Sid-Meiers-Civilization-V-Download/dp/B004774IPU/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1383086071&sr=8-1&keywords=civ+5

u/OverExclamated · 2 pointsr/gaming

Hyper X Cloud Alphas are really the way to go - good sound, decent mic, very good comfort, good build quality. As importantly as anything else, they have a standard 3.5mm detachable/replaceable cord. Worn or broken cords are by far the most common fault for any corded headphone, and having a standard detachable cord makes for an easy and inexpensive repair, eliminating the need to replace the entire headset. The mic is also detachable, and replacements are sold at a very reasonable price by HyperX.

If you would like something even more versatile, and if open-backed headphones are suitable for your listening environment, then, at a cost of around $85US, SHP9500s paired with a VModa Boompro are the no-brainer recommendation as they surpass everything in the same price range, by far.

I got these not too long ago for PS4. I LOVE them, mainly because of how easy they are to set up and use, but even for the price, the sound quality is real nice and they're comfortable. Mic is hidden, so it's not jutting out in front of your mouth, and it works on PC also (only for sound though, not chat unfortunately). I recommend, especially if you can find them on sale. I've seen them for as low as about $50.

u/ultimanium · 2 pointsr/gaming

I would advise a normal headphones with clip on mic, much better quality, and typically more comfortable.
For example, this

or this

I would be wary of surround sound headsets, as I've found that the drivers all far too close to great an effect for me, and simulated surround sound, via soundcard, receiver ,or ingame, works better.

And this is the Mic I use.

I have used a tritton 5.1 headset, g330, etc, and in sound quality, comfort, and reliability, my sennheiser 555 destroys them. (My trittons practically broke bimonthly while in warrenty)

u/clarke1408 · 1 pointr/gaming

So unfortunately I have only Apple standard built headphones in my house and have been on travel so I haven’t had time to do more troubleshooting but my next step was to try something else. I have sent an email to Bose asking if their “android” built aux cords with inline mics use android style which is a 30 dollar solution. Secondly I was looking at aux cords with single button inline mics but haven’t seen much on amazon but I have been looking at the V-MODA BoomPro Microphone https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00BJ17WKK/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_FXlHAbB3FRBR0 which I just am not sure how well would fit into the bose headphones and is also 30 bucks but I’m 90% sure there are no volume controls and is definitely not built with Apple standards in mind.

u/RobertM525 · 1 pointr/gaming

You mean like this? (PS3/PC rather than XB360, I know.)

Not that I've used it, but it sure looks nice. ;)

u/02J · 5 pointsr/gaming

Nice.

I lived in the original GT for months after release yet I haven't followed GT5 much and haven't gotten into any other racer since.

At 17, never having owned a car, racing with a gamepad was acceptable. At 30, having become something of a car guy I can't fathom playing a racer without a wheel.

The one I had my eye on has gone up $40 in a week (not entirely unexpected).

It turns the game into a $400 rather than $60 proposition.

Decisions, decisions.

Wouldn't it be much more effective to spend the money on malaria nets or something instead? Let's just assume that a PlayStation 3 costs $250, a malaria net costs $5, and 1 in every 400 malaria nets saves a life. Then with a $2,000 donation, you could either buy eight PS3s, or save one life.

Is the choice obvious?

u/yorshsunei · 2 pointsr/gaming

I recently just purchased the v moda boom pro, I should get it within 2 weeks. Its a mic that attaches itself to any headset that takes a 3.5 mm cable. That way you can use some really good headphones built for audio experience while having a good mic, since most gaming headsets that try to include it all usually suck.

I'm new to the headphone game but I heard good things about the phillips shp9500. They aren't base heavy but people that got them for gaming stand by it.

u/blackraven36 · 3 pointsr/gaming

On a side note to anyone who really likes the Bioshock series, the book is really good.

u/samfreez · 3 pointsr/gaming

Do you have a budget, and would you be playing too?

The Logitech Momo is a good wheel. I've had mine for eons, although it finally started to die on me (more specifically, the cable got mangled due to cats and I'm too lazy to fix it again) so I replaced it with a far-superior G27 (https://smile.amazon.com/Logitech-941-000045-G27-Racing-Wheel/dp/B001NT9TK4)

If you can swing it, the 900 degree rotation on the G27 is far more fun to use than the 180 degree-or-so rotation on the Momo, but the Momo is a solid wheel, and a good force feedback option for a kid, IMO.

There was a book written, a prequel to Bioshock 1, in which we see Andrew Ryan's descent into madness, a lot of the main characters, and how Rapture started out and became so messed up. Reading it really felt like playing the game, just the style they used. I recommend it.

No problem at all. Glad I could help!

Just a heads up: The G35 is on sale on Amazon for $92 and the G930 is on sale for $100. For the couple dollar difference, I would suggest the G930, but the decision is totally yours. It DOES look like the G930 has a sturdier build, but the G35looks sleeker.

u/Shmag · 2 pointsr/gaming

I've had this problem as well. Headsets, especially those marketed at 'gamers' seem to be able to get away with this stuff. Buy some quality cans (Sennheiser 555's are good from what I hear) and get a Zalman clip on mic.

you can get Dungeon Siege for dirt cheap and its a good PC game. Played with 4 others for like 16hrs and still didn't finish all the content for 1.. now they are up to Dunegon Siege III.

Also, if you are going to get Neverwinter Nights, make sure you get the platinum edition. Its still cheap right now and it has all of the networking fixes that made multiplayer broken in the past.

Or just kick it old school with Balders Gate...http://www.amazon.com/Baldurs-Gate-4-1-Boxset-Pc/dp/B000FGA1US/ref=pd_sim_vg5

u/tEhKeWlEsT · 2 pointsr/gaming

My recommendation, for PC at the very least, is to avoid "gamer headsets" altogether. Generally what you are signing up for is a sub-par set of headphones attached to a sub par mic. What I did is research some of the best headphones in the business and matched them up with a very serviceable microphone. This setup has worked great for me and the sound and voice delivery quality has been head and shoulders above any "gaming headset" I've owned. Here's the setup that I use - you can go much more expensive or much cheaper, but this works great for me.

Anyone from the UK can get skyrim on physical CD cheaper but I guess you'll have to wait a bit for shipping because of the holidays.

NO SPOILERS, PROMISE:

EVERYONE WHO READ THE BOOK:
Did you know there's a Bioshock: Infinite tie-in in the Rapture book? Page 153, first paragraph refers to "Comstock Mines"! Pretty stinking creative of the author if you ask me.

Edited to pretty-up the link.

u/Fishvtt · 1 pointr/gaming

Sony made a product some time ago for this - link - I haven't actually tried it out, but it seems very cool.

u/disgruntledgaurdian · 1 pointr/gaming

There's a book called Bioshock: Rapture written by John Shirley which basically takes you through everything from the construction of Rapture up to the beginning of the first game. It's well written and he talked to the makers of Bioshock while writing.

I have no idea what that is called or where you could get it, but I am 99% sure that you could easily make one yourself for mcuh, much cheaper.

EDIT: Just saw this post linking to the product and now I'm 100% sure that what I just said is wrong.

Amazon has them new for like $26 ish I believe.

Here you go

couple friends and I have the Sony PS4 headset.. no complaints.
sounds pretty good considering there's no boom mic. you can just plug the dongle into a computer and it works there too. comes with a standard cable so you can use them with anything else too.

Get This

and This

Better than any "Gaming Headset" you'll find.

I've had.

  • Hyper X Clouds 1/2

  • Steel Series Arctis 5/7

  • Astros A40/50

  • TurtleBeaches etc etc
u/Clurichaun · 2 pointsr/gaming

It costs more than I would ever seriously recommend for a single purpose peripheral, but if you really want the most realistic racing wheel, you want The Logitech G27.

u/IamSparticles · 1 pointr/gaming

Is it a circular scratch that goes all the way around the disc? That's what happens when the read head crashes into the disc while it's spinning at high speed. It will render the entire track unreadable, and it's really difficult to fix. You can try one of these, but don't expect miracles. It basically polishes off a layer of the polycarbonate. It works fine for minor scratches, but deep ones are pretty much a lost cause.

u/bryanhbell · 1 pointr/gaming

From what you describe, I'm guessing you bought the boxed version of Skyrim on Amazon UK (which is now £19.51!).

On Amazon US, the boxed price is $43.99 USD (it isn't available for PC download). While Steam is available worldwide, its developer Valve is in the US, so there might not be too much pressure from Amazon UK to make Steam lower its prices on Skyrim. But hopefully I'm wrong. :)

Since you can use any headphones with the mixamp you have soooooo many options!! Whats your budget usd? You can get a vmoda boompro mic and use almost any headphones!! You can get some ath700x for like 100 dollars and get the boompro for 30 and have a much cheaper version of the one you mentioned earlier. Or check the gamestop website or ask an associate to check web in store or inventory at other stores.

Just depends on the store and what's been traded in. Like my store probably has about 10

I'd sell you one if I hadn't traded them all in awhile ago.

u/TheDanishInquisition · 3 pointsr/gaming

Well yes that works in theory, but in execution: the boxless, bookless, diskless, versions of COD:MW3 Skyrim and Max Payne 3 are all $60, while the physical versions are the same if not cheaper due to limited shelf space. Granted there is probably some selection bias, these were the three $60 games on the steam storefront.

u/Blepharospasm · 7 pointsr/gaming

Can anyone confirm whether the UK version of skyrim is a steamkey as well? here is the link

I wonder if he used the standard controller to play or a racing wheel.

I got this Sony Playstation 3D Display for $200 some black friday/cyber monday 2 years ago. The image quality is fantastic but the audio is very tinny. Use headphones. There's a 3.5mm audio out on the side. Attaches via HDMI, Component, and composite connections.

What's your budget?

I generally recommend getting audio headphones and a microphone, like http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00ENMK1DW + http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00BJ17WKK, since almost all gaming headsets suck.

I have the wireless PS4 Headset works well but takes up one usb slot for the receiver. The battery for the head set last about 2.5-3 times longer then the controller.

u/S7evyn · 3 pointsr/gaming

Get a set of Sennheiser HD 555's and do this to them. If you want a mic, get a Zalman ZM-1. This is almost always the most upvoted advice.

For headphones, you only need stereo. You only hear in stereo; your brain extrapolates the origin of the sound from the delay between each ear. Surround is useful for speakers, since the origin is actually relevant, but headphone speakers are close enough to your ears that the origin is irrelevant.

Half-Life 2 is available on the X-Box.

Half-Life 2, HL2: Episode One and HL2: Episode Two are all available on The Orange Box which is on 360 and PS3.

currently it's just the on-board sound of my laptop however I plan on building a new rig soon so I'd probably include a nice soundcard, so it would kinda be a waste with USB headphones.

Iv'e narrowed it down to these: one, two, three. I am unsure if I were to buy the steelseries V2's if i should also get this to compliment it. I am totally unsure about which is is the bet of the 3 choices though.
