First impressions of the Amazon Premium Headphone

Now I'm not a huge fan of earbuds, but I do like the current generation Apple EarPods. They are well designed, and, more importantly, sound surprisingly good for earbuds. So when Amazon recently dropped a lightning deal on its [Premium Headphones] (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00HX0SRXW) for a mere $10, I had to check it out to see how it compared against Jony Ive and company.

**

We All Know That People Are The Same Where Ever We Go

The biggest problem I have with earbuds is the fit. Most people cannot get them to sit securely in the acoustic meatus (the triangular depression of the pinna of the ear between the [tragus, the antitragus and the concha] (http://sonoworld.com/images/FetusItemImages/article-images/face_and_neck/ear_anu_patil_images/ear_anatomy.gif) in a way that offers any kind of seal, and so earbuds typically sound tinny and distant compared to IEMs. And since they offer little isolation, folks tend to increase the volume of the music they are listening to in order to compensate for ambient noise. Which in turn frequently leads to distortion, further degrading sound quality.

But the same factors that place earbuds at a disadvantage can also be advantages in certain situations. There are times when you don't want excessive isolation, and earbuds offer portability and convenience in a way that open full sized headphones can never achieve.

There Is Good And Bad In Everyone

The Amazon Premium Headphones are packaged well, in an attractive black container made of thin card stock, with a profile image of the earpods subtly etched in bas relief. The packaging opens up to reveal black glossy earbuds, with no accessories.

These earbuds were clearly "inspired" by the Apple EarPods. Build quality is excellent, with the inner face of the earbuds mirroring a dark quasi-ceramic look, just like the Apple EarPods. The ends are more angular than Apple EarPods, and the Amazon earbuds don't have the long stem that Apple EarPods do. Amazon earpods have two slit-like bass ports, one on the inside face and one up top, in comparison to the three vents on the EarPort.

The ends of the Amazon earbuds are magnetized, and so they conveniently stick to each other, which makes them easier to carry around when not listening (with the cable around the neck and the earbuds magnet-snapped together like a necklace). I can also put one earbud inside my front pocket and snap it to the other outside: the magnetic bond holds through the cloth even when I am walking around. Its a super convenient feature. Round cables from the buds terminate in a 3 button control, and then emerge as a flat cable to the TRRS 1/8 inch connector. The connector has a narrow lip so I can plug it into my phone easily.

Amazon earbuds are optimized for the Amazon Fire phone. The play/pause button works on the phone iPhone and some android phones, but YMMV with the other buttons.

We Learn To Live, We Learn To Give

The cables feel slinky to touch, and microphonics are mild to moderate. The flat cable is supposed to be less likely to tangle in theory. In real life, we know that all cables tangle, it is a law of nature that cannot be opposed, like gravity or the cuteness of kittens.

The earbuds feel comfortable against the ear. The cable hangs easily from the intertragic notch (the v-notch of the ear) without discomfort. Seal is, well, a joke, like any other earbud. Ambient noise is clearly audible. Buttons emit a reassuring haptic "click" when you press on them. Cord length is appropriate.

What We Need To Survive

On first listen, Apple EarPods and the Amazon earbuds sound surprisingly similar. But with some extended A/B testing, differences become apparent.

Specifically, bass on the Amazon earbuds is not as boomy as on the Apple EarPods, and sub bass is virtually non-existant. The Amazon earbuds overall have a smoother tone, and high end rolloff is earlier and more prominent. Mids, and particularly vocals are a tad recessed, although they are not mildly distorted as they are with Apple EarPods. Instruments in classical performances sound somewhat artificial.

Overall, these are a good option for folks looking for a smoother sounding pair of earbuds. They will never be my first choice for listening to music, but at $10 IMO they are a steal in comparison to the $30 Apple EarPod.

The best thing about these: The magnetic ends of the buds are a nice design feature, and very convenient.

Amazon Fire Premium Headphones work perfectly and are a good quality for the price. $15 to $20.

Also, my experience tells me that if you bought some that didn't work they were probably designed for Apple products.

I like Amazon's premium headphones, cheap, good sound, mic and controls - Amazon Premium Headphones https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00HX0SRXW/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_cnTLxb9J2HC6M

Here are the S6 OEM earbuds; they work very well IME.

Another good option are the Amazon Premium Headphones.

I use both of these on a daily basis and they are very similar.

They sound great. More bassy and airy/distant than Yuin. Excellent clarity.

I went to find this on the US and found that dropping in the AIN (B00HWHTGOK) took me to Test product do not use. I found that funny.

For US, you want: http://amzn.com/B00HX0SRXW

Personally I like non-enclosed earbuds like these:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00HX0SRXW?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00

They don't go all the way in your ears like earplugs and don't do any noise isolation. With the volume turned down to like 50-60% on my phone, I can listen to music and still hear pretty much everything around me easily. My general rule of thumb is that if you can't hear a car coasting behind you then it's too loud.

u/CosmonautLaika · 4 pointsr/buildapcsales

I bought two last go around. I got two pairs of Jlab Jbuds J5 metal earbuds, one black and one pink. The style without the mic. The sound quality is pretty good actually, and I gave the pink ones to a friend. But I probably won't buy again because I have so many pairs of earbuds now. And I really only need ones with a mic to use with phones. (My favorite are still the Amazon Premium Earphones) http://www.amazon.com/Amazon-KA416Y-Premium-Headphones/dp/B00HX0SRXW/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1425397994&sr=1-1&keywords=amazon+premium

I think they're just rare.

Amazon Earbuds are my favorite cheap earbuds. They sit in your ears pretty flush, so they're easy to lay on. Flat cable doesn't tangle too bad, and the buds themselves click together with magnets. Big fan of these.

The sound on these is awesome, and the mic is very good although maybe a little too sensitive, just tuck it under your shirt to muffle it a bit.

Here you go :). They're basically Amazon's equivalent to apple's earpods

Amazon offers some apple earpod clones that supposedly work with Android. I haven't used them yet, but plan to order when I eventually get a Pixel.

When they launched the Amazon Fire Phone they came out with their own set of earbuds, similar to, but with slight differences from the Apple-style ones. They were cheaper, in black, had the volume control on the cord, but the cord was flat tape-like, so tangled less. And they have a light magnetic back on the buds, which would keep them together when not in use, less tangling. Maybe you'd like those.

In searching for that, found a Groupon deal for them for slightly less, if you're in the U.S.

These do that neat magnetic trick as well. I think /u/veni_vidi_vale tried them already?

u/cluelessmoron1 · 2 pointsr/CasualConversation

they make earbuds that sit in your ear but don't seal off noise, i use them when i still need to hear around me.

Magnets in the buds to keep them from tangling. Volume and play/pause controls for Android. Flat cable

u/kunmeh13 · 2 pointsr/pcmasterrace

Honestly, I LOVE these. Only $15, so you can buy 6 of em haha. I use them with a separate mic while gaming as well.

I've tried ATH-m40x headphones, and was really underwhelmed by them. I was expecting to be blown away, but the only difference I noticed between my earbuds and those was the noise suppression of the m40x, but no difference in sound quality. I ended up returning the m40x and just stuck to these.

I'm no audiophile, but I have really enjoyed the [Amazon Premium Headphones] (https://amzn.com/B00HX0SRXW) that came with my Amazon Fire Phone. Reviewers comment on how the buds fall out easily and the cord frays but mine have given me no issues over the past 1 1/2 years. Sound quality and bass sounds excellent, magnets allow easy 1-earbud listening, controls and mic have worked for every phone I've tried them on, and the tangle-free cord has redeemed earbud headphones for me (never used them previously due to the tangled mess they usually become).

As for wireless, the AUKEY EP-B26/KINIVO BTH-240 has been my go-to. I've tried the Jaybird-style headphones but they never seem to fit my ears correctly. Sound quality is perfectly fine for running/outdoors. Comfort is great except that my ears heat up during distance runs. Mic leaves a lot to be desired, but works fine for the price.

Sorry I was on the mobile site and didn't think to provide a link. They are simply called the Amazon premium headphones. $19 so not too bad. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00HX0SRXW/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Hi, I'm looking to buy something similar in design to the Amazon Premium Headphones: http://www.amazon.com/Amazon-KA416Y-Premium-Headphones/dp/B00HX0SRXW

but I don't want something that's IEM and can still fit in my pocket (earphone-sized).

What are some options? Thanks!

u/toejam0707 · 1 pointr/Nexus6P

The Amazon Premium Headphones that originally came with the Fire Phone work great.

[Edit:] Er, no, they don't. They worked with my Nexus 5, but I just double-checked, because I haven't used them in awhile, and the volume and play/pause buttons don't function.

u/b_wander · 1 pointr/PS4

Amazon's Premium Headphones are extremely comfortable. I sleep with these in my ears and never feel any discomfort...except maybe getting choked by the cord.

They don't sound bad, but they lack that deep thumping bass. Overall, they sound good enough.

They're similar to Apple's Earpods in almost every way except the mic doesn't cause that annoying high pitched sound. They also work well with Android Phones.

http://www.amazon.com/Amazon-KA416Y-Premium-Headphones/dp/B00HX0SRXW

I use the Amazon earbuds more often, but when I want my music to sound rich with solid bass I use Sony's MDRXB50AP Extra Bass earbuds.

They're not nearly as comfortable as the Amazon earbuds, but sound AMAZING!

i use the ones amazon made for the fire phone, they sound as good as earpods and have better cable management imo, also the media controls actually work so you can manage the volume unlike earpods. LINK - the one good thing that came from the fire phone

Hello, I'm new so I don't quite know how this works but I'm looking for earbuds without the rubber tips at the end as those never stay in my ear.
I was looking for something shaped like the Apple Earpods or the Amazon Premium Headphones (https://www.amazon.com/Amazon-KA416Y-Premium-Headphones/dp/B00HX0SRXW) which I had but they tend to stop working after a bit.
Does anybody have any suggestions, preferably as cheap as possible

u/WakingUpJose · 1 pointr/oneplus

These Amazon Fire phone headphones work well and are compatible with OPO.

http://www.amazon.com/Amazon-KA416Y-Premium-Headphones/dp/B00HX0SRXW

The main complaint people have is that they can fall out of your ears easily (for some people). The sound is decent though and better than the silver bullets in my opinion. The cord's design makes them get tangled up much, much less. I think they're worth $18.

u/c2005 · 1 pointr/MotoX

I picked up a pair of the Amazon Fire Phone headphones when they went on sale a couple days ago for $12.

http://www.amazon.com/Amazon-KA416Y-Premium-Headphones/dp/B00HX0SRXW/ref=sr_1_1

I just tested them and the middle button does mute the line when on a call. It pauses when playing music.

The other features of the headphones are also slick including the magnetic back of each earbud and the flat cable. So tangling should be minimized.

Certainly worth $12. At $18, you make that decision. I'd still buy them though.

Amazon premium headphones, all three buttons including volume control works perfectly with my Nexus 6.

Amazon headphones have a very similar design to apple's earpods. they're much cheaper than the apple ones and have a flat cable and magnetic housings that make it more difficult to tangle. i would suggest checking those out. link

u/gmb81 · 1 pointr/xboxone

The Amazon Fire Headphones are very similar, and work great with the headset adapter. That's my configuration of choice. The cord is tangle-free and the earbuds have magnets on the outside to keep them from tangling.

Amazon Premium Headphones https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00HX0SRXW/ref=cm_sw_r_awd_fQNDub1B7CDYB

$18 right now, but they were $10 a couple of months back.

Edit: To answer the original question, it works great - any audio comes over it, not just chat. My wife uses it all the time to watch tv while I'm working. It does chew through batteries though, so definitely consider a rechargeable solution.

I think I've seen the official Xbox headset on various deals for $30/$40. That actually comes with the adapter, which is normally $25.

The Amazon Fire Headphones are great.
They're wired differently from Apple Earpods and allow you to control volume with most of the Android phones I've tried them on. Also, they magnetically clip together.

The ear bud form factor has a lot wrong with it.

To start with, it's not sealed. This means that as the speaker mechanism moves air, a lot of energy is transferred to the surrounding atmosphere instead of your ears. Unfortunately, this leakage is not uniform. Lower frequency tones are affected more than high frequency tones. Because of this, it's incredibly difficult to make earbuds sound good.

Secondly, because earbuds are not sealed, people using them while out and about will often turn the volume up way too high. This ends up hurting your hearing in relatively short order.

So, not only do earbuds frequently sound awful, they're also borderline dangerous to use.

When faced with these problems, headphone manufacturers often decide to build IEMs instead. IEMs are sealed, so it's easier to make them sound good for cheaper, and they're safer to use (though this point is debatable).

However, you said that IEMs are uncomfortable and unhygienic.

I find them to be very comfortable (much more than earbuds). Earbuds move around (since they're not anchored in any way) as I do, which causes the plastic to rub against my skin and pull at the cartilage in my ear. IEMs don't have this problem.

Also, earwax is designed to keep your ear clean. I wouldn't want to share IEMs, but using them just by yourself is in no way unhygienic.

TL;DR; I've never heard of wireless earbuds and don't expect to. They'd fall out too easily. Just get these or these or these and deal with the wire.
