with VM's your best bet is a pair of small MLC SSD's and set them up for mirrored ZIL. The difference in I/O between 6x mirror and any set of raid-z type raid groups is negligible. leveraging a flash device for sync writes (which most VM drivers use) is orders of magnitude better.

I just put it in my rig (8086k/Prime Z370-A GTX 1070 Windforce OC 16/3200MHz 250/970Evo 2TB/BarraCuda) and enabled my spinner to use it like a cache. My rig went from fast to insane, and one of the nice things is that textures seem to load with less pop-in and I scream through load screens.
It was a cheap enough upgrade but it was well worth it, I feel like it's priced just right for futureproofing and you might even be able to step that RAM down and save a buck or even go with an 8700K with what you save. People are calling it a gimmick but to me the point is being able to have something reliable for a long time, and I can see how this will help. I've dabbled on the low end of hardware for years and finally treated myself recently, and I really feel justified since I don't intend to purchase anything (except maybe a GPU upgrade?)

My Prime Z370-A even has a heatspreader built right in.
Other than that, your rig looks like a reliable workhorse, that airflow will be really important. Covfefe Lake tends to get a bit toasty.
Personally, if upgrading the memory was not an option (i.e. you are maxed out), I would use an Intel Optane device as swap space and then set vm.swappiness to 100 on the Linux hypervisor host.

You aren't. It's a straight ssd. Built with Optane memory, which is what Od2 was thinking you meant, I assume.
What about this Optane thing? Is that necessary? Or is it just a replacement/compliment to RAM?
