I think it's OK. Instead of buying a bunch of dongles I decided to replace a few of my cables. E.g. USB-C to B for connecting my printer/scanner and USB-C to 3.0 Micro for my portable HDD.

The only thing I personally worry about is wanting to unexpectedly use a USB-A port, e.g. if I'm traveling and someone wants to give me a USB flash drive. I picked up a few USB-C to A adapters and I try to keep one in my bag but I haven't had to use it yet.

YMMV.

u/beyondthetech · 4 pointsr/mac

You need more than a straight cable.

I suggest this cable, plus a couple of USB-A to USB-C adapters.

Hi guys! So I mostly play my switch in handheld/portable mode but I want a hori pro controller. Would I be able to use this
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01EL4PVFE/ref=ox_sc_sfl_title_2?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=A1RI0YHZ8J2HZU

With a hori controller + a stand? Or should I just shell out the extra 50 something for a pro controller?

Second the BAR drive. It's what I'm using.

Then get a USB-C to USB adapter so you can clear Sentry clips from your phone.

I ordered a couple different cheaper adapters to try them out. Bought them from Amazon.ca but I imagine they sell them on .com too.

I just noticed this happening on my new 15" touchbar MBP. I purchased these Rankie adapters which work perfectly for what I need, but regardless of which port I plug them into, wifi stops working.

Is this the adapter itself? Apple's ports?

What about using a USB c to USB 3.0 converter like this?

u/WarpedFlayme · 1 pointr/Games

Yeah, lost my head for a second there. C-B cables definitely not a thing.

>Type C devices are allowed to connect to past usb versions yes, but only as hosts

Not true at all. The whole point of an A-C cable is to connect a Type C client device to a Type A host (that's the point of Type A vs B: Host vs Client). And I can connect a male Type C to female Type A adapter (example) for my Type C equipped device to act as a host. That is one of the major features of Type C: eliminating the distinction between host and client port.

>'Legacy adapters with a USB Type-C receptacle are "not defined or allowed"

Yes, you cannot create any kind of adapter that will accept a Type C cable because it could be dangerous. I never said this could or should be done. Perhaps there is some miscommunication between us on what brought up this point?

Then that last paragraph of yours I don't really understand at all. It seems to contradict itself... You wouldn't call them independent because a Type C device doesn't have to support 3.1 or PD? Doesn't that make them independent? The "Technology Key Messages" section of your linked document does seem to emphasize that the Type C port, USB 3.1, and USB PD are all, in fact, independent. They were all announced as part of the USB 3.1 "package" at the same time because they can be used in combination for an expanded feature set, but they are in no way the same thing.

u/NobodySpecial999 · 1 pointr/GearVR

Yes, exactly. But I think I would prefer something more like this: Amazon Link
I'm thinking that the dongle with the cable between the ends might swing around and work its way loose if used while in VR. The one piece unit might be preferable.

I do not miss any old ports. I have single adapter that has all ports like LAN, ssd card, hdmi etc which I used when I had my hdmi monitor. Now I got usb c monitor. I also have usb Blu-ray and hdd, so bought 2 tiny usb c to usb a adapter and have it fixed to the Blu-ray and hdd. But I don’t use them since my Mac is backed up using time machine wirelessly.

Usb c multiport adapter

Usb c to usb a adapter

So, technically, I don’t miss the ports. I have an adapter just in case.

u/CypherColt · 1 pointr/chromeos

On my CB+ I bought the following adapter (sorry amazon canada link) and it works fine with my wireless mouse (Logitech Performance MX using the Logitech Dongle)

u/Soulflare3 · 1 pointr/factorio

On that topic, I have a couple of these adapters, both ends are metal and the cable is braided, nice little adapters.
There's also smaller variants if preferred, these ones seem to be rated well on Amazon.

Only downside to both of these devices is that you can't charge your phone and use it at the same time. So if I fall asleep with my USB headset plugged into my phone, it will kill the battery. Android properly recognizes and lets me use a USB audio device, however it tries to "charge" the device and constantly pushes power to it, eventually depleting the battery.

If you wanted to be able to charge your device while using USB devices, this looks like it can get the job done.

u/Chris-in-PNW · 1 pointr/mac

I've never had any issues using various versions of these. (I've not tried that particular brand, but that's a typical price, $6-7 for a 2-pack.) I've purchased about a dozen of them over the ~2 years since I bought my MBP. Some ended up semi-permanently attached to a cable, some got lost, and some are floating around one of my desks or the other.

Remember, the USB-C port on the Mac supports a superset of the protocols supported by the USB-A port on your PC (assuming it's not a non-standard USB implementation on the PC). Using an USB-A to USB-C adaptor changes the connector, not the protocol. It's still USB, end to end.

u/iOnlyPlayPetBuilds · 1 pointr/SmashBrosUltimate

What I meant is will I need it even if i'm playing right next to the dock even though i'm in tabletop mode. I figured you can use the controller as long as it was plugged into the dock.

So is there an official adapter? If not what would be the ideal one on amazon? https://www.amazon.com/Rankie-2-Pack-Adapter-Hi-speed-Black-x/dp/B01EL4PVFE/ref=sr_1_9?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1541810631&sr=1-9 this one has the most reviews but I don't know if it's the best.

Now I would need the adjustable charging stand so it can stand up straight right?

u/notaneggspert · 1 pointr/Cameras

This should serve you just fine.

Alternatively get a good usb 3.0 card reader and an adapter.

USB-C to USB-A cables aren't expensive and they're only going to get cheaper. Also in terms of mice and peripherals you're probably going to want bluetooth versions for a thin and light workstation.

EDIT: These cheap mini adapters exist for the common case of USB-C to USB-A https://www.amazon.com/Rankie-2-Pack-Adapter-Hi-speed-Black/dp/B01EL4PVFE

Also USB-C can carry native HDMI/DP signals. All you need is a $10 cable. I think you don't really understand the versatility of USB-C. In most cases you don't need an expensive dongle or adapter. You just need a different cable (eg. instead of HDMI-HDMI cable you get a USB-C to HDMI cable). The USB-C cables tend to cost like $5 more than the more common cables we use today but that's a pretty small cost and they're getting cheaper each year.

Example of a USB-C to HDMI cable: https://www.amazon.com/CableCreation-Thunderbolt-compatible-MacBook-Chromebook/dp/B06XDMKQKJ

> Comparing $2000 to $1500 and saying that that $500 isn't much in bullshit.

It's not bullshit. You would say a $450K house is only a little more expensive than a 450K house. But you would say a 70K car is a lot more expensive than a 20K car. You would expect a much bigger difference between a 70K car and 20K car than a 450K house and 400K house.

Well let's look at the chips first. It's a bit confusing. The ASMedia 1142 is for type A/5 Gbps ports. However, it looks like the cards with 1 type C and 1 type A also use the 1142. The ASMedia 2142 is for type C 10Gbps. They both seem to come on cards designed for a PCIe x4 slot.

Those chips control 2 ports each and if you got a card with a 2142 you would need type C to type A adapters as well. The 1142 has great performance so I wouldn't necessarily avoid it even though the cards are older, since you just need type A connectivity.

So if you want the newest and best and money isn't so important, I would get a 2142-based card with two type C, and get Type C to Type A adapters. Such as:

https://www.amazon.com/Ableconn-PUSB31P2A-2-Port-Express-Adapter/dp/B07595W7TF/

and:

https://www.amazon.com/Rankie-2-Pack-Adapter-Hi-speed-Black/dp/B01EL4PVFE/

If you want to keep it simple and get a card with two Type A, something like:

https://www.amazon.com/Ableconn-PUSB31P2A-2-Port-Express-Adapter/dp/B010PNUALA/

Also note that they suggest using the built in Windows drivers and not installing the ASMedia driver, for UASP support. This may not be true with subsequent updates to their driver.

Hope that helps some. You may want to search dedicated VR forums as this has certainly come up before. You might want to try comparable ASMedia cards from lower priced manufacturers than Ableconn, that's up to you.

I would look for USB to toslink and just get the $4 adapter that converts to USB-C. You might be looking for a while if you want native USB-C. (and it doesn't matter for this purpose)

examples:
https://www.amazon.com/Behringer-UCA202-BEHRINGER-U-CONTROL/dp/B000KW2YEI

and adapter:
https://www.amazon.com/Rankie-2-Pack-Adapter-Hi-speed-Black/dp/B01EL4PVFE/ref=sr_1_7?ie=UTF8&qid=1523988357&sr=8-7&keywords=usb-a+to+usb-c

That will all work w/o drivers on the newer macs.
