Quick glance. A lot these are good I would say, but I'm not a fan of all of them.

Screen issues:

  • ASUS P2540UA. I still don't like this one due to its poor TN display. It's $500 not $800, but you can now easily get a decent display for this price in a laptop that's also fine for "normal" use. This Acer, this Dell, and the Thinkpad E570 (pick i3 + 1920x1080 IPS + 256GB SSD + upgrade RAM yourself) I might consider first. Most base specs are already more than enough such that you won't notice a difference for normal use, but "base" displays are often really not very good. I also think SSDs are worth it, and the Acer R 15 has an open M.2 slot, and the E570 offers one on the config page for a good price. You could choose the ASUS and get one of these to replace the poor TN panel with, but then there's still the question of SSD.
  • Dell Latitude E7250 refurb has the poor 1366x768 TN display when you can get a newer refurb Latitude 12.5" model through the Dell Outlet for not much more, or perhaps cheaper if a coupon works. Really, you can check all the sizes of refurb Latitudes if you would like a different size.
  • Acer Aspire E 15 E5-575G-57D4. Partially a screen issue partially also the GPU. The new similarly-priced A515-51G-52R1 has the doubly-fast NVIDIA MX150, in addition to its better display.

I also think the Ideapad 510 @$800 is a poor deal since in most cases you can either go cheaper or get a better GPU, at the same time as keeping the decent display. Both, with the Acer A515-51G-52R1. I'd also be aware this 940MX only has DDR3 memory so it's a bit lower than the Acer with the DDR5 940MX (which I wouldn't really recommend either way due to the availability of the A515-51G-52R1), and that the "i7" 7500U can be considered a misleadingly-branded CPU since it's not appreciably faster than an "i5" 7200U despite carrying branding so often touted by Intel and computer companies as top-end, and is easily beaten by an "i5" 7300HQ. Fine for normal use, I just wouldn't choose the laptop because of it.

If you think you may be interested in a 2 in 1, maybe look into the Lenovo Yoga 710 for just under $700. It is a 14'' with a touchscreen and 2 in 1 capabilities with pretty good specs and build quality. It has a new Kaby lake i5 processor, 8gb of ram and 256gb ssd. It also has a full 1080p IPS display, a backlit keyboard, a very long battery life, and weighs in at 3.6 pounds. The only problem is the right shift button is in a bit of an irregular position and can be difficult to adapt to. It has intel HD 620 graphics which should work fine for CS:GO and similar light games as well.

If you want something smaller, Another option you could look into is the new HP Envy 13 for $700 (US). It is small and compact, yet decently powerful with a new kaby lake i5 processor, 8gb of ram, 256gb ssd, and intel HD 620 graphics. It also has an extremely long battery life (advertised up to 16 hours), a sleek aluminum build, and a 1080p IPS display. It also has HD 620 graphics which should be fine for light gaming.

If you're fine with less portability and think you may want a 15'', I would suggest the Acer E15 for $550. It has a new kaby lake i5 processor, 8gb of ram, 256gb ssd, and a GTX 940MX graphics card. It will work extremely well for light / moderate gaming with its dedicated GPU. It also has a 1080p TN display, a backlit keyboard, and a very long battery life.

What about this Acer Spin 5? with the new and solid 8th gen i5 processor, 8 GB RAM and of course, the gtx 1050 graphics card... You will be able to play games as well as engage in video editing.

Asus C101 or variant. I had this until I lost it, awesome hardware and support for Android apps, which is v important https://www.amazon.com/Chromebook-C101PA-DB02-Quad-Core-Lightweight-Touchscreen/dp/B075KFFMZS

u/kurikintonfox · 3 pointsr/Dell

Can you link it? I could only find this one for $2655. Comes out to $2920 after tax.

Over a year ago, the similarly specced 9560 from Microcenter was $1599 no tax.

u/Scope72 · 3 pointsr/Dell

Thought it said 25XX but maybe I mixed my numbers around. So let's use the one you linked and compare. But including tax isn't really the way to go because that is different for each person based on where you live and which store you buy it from.

Surface Book 2- 1060, 512GB, 16GB =$2,650

XPS 15 2 in 1- Vega M, 512GB, 16GB= $2,350

So that's 300 dollars difference.

Anyway, my original point still stands. You can get a lot of battery life from a device just like the XPS 15 2 in 1. The Surface Book 2 has double.

Also I wouldn't compare the normal XPS 15 since that isn't really the same kinda machine.

For me personally, I'll likely still get a XPS 15 2 in 1, because if the 1080p version can get 8-9 hours that's fine for me. Also the SB2 doesn't have TB3 and has issues charging while under heavy use. Kind of a deal breaker for me.

u/SurfaceDockGuy · 3 pointsr/Surface

Which country are you in? 3rd-party retailers may have stock and a better price than MSRP. You can purchase 3rd-party and within 2 weeks buy the MS complete extended warranty plan from MS if you provide proof of purchase date and proof that you didn't already break the machine.

In the USA, for example, several independent Amazon sellers have15" 512GB units in stock:

Hey,

There is also the Lenovo Flex 5, which is much cheaper than both the Yoga 730 and Acer Spin 5. Same components but smaller SSD, which shouldn't be a big issue for scohol work. The laptop runs Windows 10 Home. The display is 14". It is a touchscreen 2-in-1. It has 8 GB of RAM.

Since you won't be doing anything requiring much performance you can get a basic i7 laptop and if you want to do a little gaming, you can take a look at some Ryzen Mobile systems although they do have some driver issues:

  • Asus VivoBook
  • Acer Aspire E15
  • Dell Inspiron 15
  • Acer Swift 3
  • Dell Inspiron 13
  • Lenovo IdeaPad 15.6"

The Aspire E15 is the only one with a dGPU if you want to play some games, it's great. But the Ryzen Mobile systems perform really well in a small package, especially the Acer Swift 3 and if you don't care about performance AT ALL, get the VivoBook as it's a great thin and light which is well built and performs quite well. If you're interested in a 2in1, get the Inspiron 13.
u/techstar2000 · 2 pointsr/LaptopDeals

I really love this ASUS ZenBook Flip 14 especially for it's build quality , solid battery life , portability and wonderful aesthetics. It's display is also very good and based on its performance power, it will allow you to browse and prepare documents effortlessly.

u/elducky · 2 pointsr/thinkpad

Yeah, just use their site :S, might have to change your browser if its not working properly. I just played with the middle of the pack TP yoga, upgraded the i3 to i5 4200u, 8gb, wacom, and 256 gb ssd, came out to ~$1700. Then you have to wait for them to build and ship :/. The BH one is a great price for more stuff (i7) and less money but its backordered. If you need one right now, amazon has one too for cheaper than lenovo. Note, I didnt check the lenovo discount portals, so Im not sure if the SPP/B&N/EPP are cheaper than amazon.

u/tristan957 · 2 pointsr/linuxhardware

I believe my model is the ThinkPad Yoga S2

More specifically, this model: https://www.amazon.com/Lenovo-12-5-Inch-Convertible-Touchscreen-20CD00B1US/dp/B00I5F7SCK

Nice little laptop

u/construktz · 2 pointsr/SuggestALaptop

If you are looking for a high end laptop for programming, the Lenovo ThinkPad T540p would be the best way to go and you can configure it with a 3K IPS display. It's going to have the best keyboard around, and definitely be upgradeable to handle a lot of VM's.

If you want a digitizer, the Lenovo ThinkPad Yoga would be the best way to go.

I wouldn't go with a Razer Blade unless you plan on gaming a lot.

u/CyberJeeves · 2 pointsr/SuggestALaptop

The Lenovo Thinkpad Yoga 8GB version is really the best option for you. Most Yoga models don't come with the digitizer, but this one does. While it's over your max budget, if you tried to save a little by getting the 4GB version, you would likely run into issues when trying to photo edit, which requires a good amount of RAM. The Thinkpad Yoga doesn't have ultra high resolution, instead opting for a regular 12.5" 1080p IPS screen, which is really quite enough for a small screen like this.

u/Selkinor · 2 pointsr/SuggestALaptop

I noticed no one has answered you yet, so I thought I'd chime in with what I decided to purchase. I was looking for something almost exactly the same as you were. I found the Lenovo Yoga 2. It's worth looking into, or something similar if you're interested.

u/E-werd · 2 pointsr/sysadmin

The Lenovo Yoga 2 is a great option if you have 1) a good imaging solution and 2) a volume license. It comes with standard Win8, not Pro, so you'll need to reimage it. That cancels out the license that it comes with so you'll need to either a) purchase Win8 Pro or b) up your volume license agreement for the devices--since it comes with a version of windows, you'll be fine. I did this with this exact device earlier in the summer and it worked great. This is a fine little laptop/tablet.

Also, CDI has the Unobook 2/ter that starts at $359. I work with CDI for cheap refurb computers and I had a demo of their first Android Unobook--it wasn't bad, wasn't great, but worked well enough. That was almost 2 years ago so they've improved quite a bit by now.

u/LonerIM2 · 2 pointsr/SuggestALaptop

I agree with Trained tech, this ASUS Transformer Book is a great option for what you need, because it comes with 12.5" ASUS TruVivid Display with IPS technology, 1920-by-1080 resolution(just like you wanted), Corning Concore Glass, Intel Core M Processor with 4M shared L3 cache, Turbo Boost up to 2.00 GHz. 4GB RAM(the best you can get for the price),
128GB iSSD(great for faster booting and loading), 8-Hours Battery Life and very light at 3.2 lbs.

u/trainedtech88 · 2 pointsr/SuggestALaptop

This is a great computer at a great price. If I could offer some help; people around here like specs and links with prices. I would suggest adding the following to the post:

  • Integrated graphics
  • 12 hour average battery life
  • 3.3 pounds
u/massivewang · 2 pointsr/SuggestALaptop

if 13 inches will work, this is an amazing laptop according to the reviews. You can flip the screeen all the way over and use it like a tablet. A bit heavier, but I think this will be the most satisfying option in terms of build quality/performance/etc.

This is getting quite confusing o_o

I got mine from Amazon. Over the past weekend and yesterday they had the i7 8/256 going for $1090, I see they bumped the price up about 30 bucks to $1120ish now. Still not a bad deal!

You can use a price tracker to follow the price movements of products on Amazon. Right now it looks like that model is hovering around its lowest point ($1090 being the lowest).

This HP might fit the bill for you. You get a 940mx, not the best in the world, but gets the job done. If you dont mind paying $50 extra, you get a 1080p touchscreenLink. The issue is that this is less of a value compared to some other gaming laptops. The inspiron 15 and the acer vx 15 give you 1080p screens and 1050's for the same price. It is the touchscreen that makes you have to settle for a 940mx. The thinkpad yoga is a decent choice too, but that has a 940m, even lower end than that of the 940mx.

This goes on sale for $650 USD every so often. It has everything you want. The touchscreen is Wacom, and the pen technology is Wacom AES.

Another option is to go with a Surface, those things have N-Trig pens.

I agree with a Surface. I am not sure for Android tablets, but Drawboard PDF is available on Windows and is fantastic. I speak from experience, as just about every college professor I've had posts their lecture slides online as a PDF. My Pro 4 has been a great device. I'd suggest looking into Drawboard if you haven't already to see if it fits your demands.

Additionally, although an Android based tablet would be cheaper, having access to desktop versions of Office apps and compatibility with other applications you might need for class is great.

You don't have to get a Pro 4. But I'd suggest a Windows tablet computer with a stylus. I'd also highly suggest getting a typecover/keyboard folio. That way, your device is a tablet when convenient and a full laptop when you need it.

Here's a quick list to check out:

Hi,

Based on your requirements I have made this noteb search

You can see and change the search parameters using the "Refine results" button in the upper-left part of the search results page. You can also click on the laptops for more information.

If you would like a 2in1 you can consider this one Lenovo Ideapad Flex 5-15 (2018) - good battery life, decent build - you can find it on amazon for 786$

u/omega44xt · 2 pointsr/SuggestALaptop

At that budget, there are rarely any laptops with Thunderbolt 3 that too with 4 lanes of PCIe. You might older XPS 13 under $1000 but that has 2 lanes of PCIe, thus affecting performance. 2 in 1 & gaming doesn't go hand in hand, even in higher segment.

You will get ultrabooks like this under $1000 with MX150, which can barely run all runs at 720p low at 30fps:

https://www.amazon.com/Acer-i5-8250U-NVIDIA-GeForce-SF314-52G-55WQ/dp/B0746P25QX/ref=sr_1_7?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1550460238&sr=1-7&keywords=mx150

Moreover, it lacks Thunderbolt 3.

Only 2 in 1 in your budget than can game, again without TB3:

https://www.amazon.com/Acer-SP515-51GN-807G-i7-8550U-GeForce-Convertible/dp/B0756TSZCT/ref=sr_1_3?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1550461054&sr=1-3&keywords=acer+spin+nitro+5

This MSI GF63 is a good gaming laptop if you want something light to game on:

https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIACVB8GV8558&Description=msi%20gf63&cm_re=msi_gf63-_-9SIACVB8GV8558-_-Product

Its GTX 1050Ti Max Q is good enough for a few more years, again no TB3.

XPS 15 is thin, light & has a Thunderbolt 3, but above your budget:

https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIADYY8AG5793

XPS 13 is smaller & lighter without a dedicated GPU, has TB3 but costs similar & has a much inferior CPU to XPS 15.

My recommendations are to compromise TB3 & get MSI or increase budget & get XPS 15. XPS 15 has a great battery life.

u/drfoqui · 2 pointsr/lowendgaming

At $1000 I'd probably recommend the new Dell G7 with the 1050Ti.

I have a laptop with the MX150 and yes, the performance is notably lower than a 1050. The thing is, the MX150 is the only discrete GPU you can put in a slim laptop and not experience serious thermal throttling while gaming. There may be some exceptions in really well built laptops like the Surface Pro but they'll be really expensive.

While doing research for my current laptop, every review I saw on a slim laptop with a GTX 1050 complained about throttling. Examples are the Acer Spin 5 and Asus VivoBook.

The reason why gaming laptops are bulky is that you need good cooling. And you definitely need it.

u/WankyWidgets · 2 pointsr/chromeos

Also, give passing consideration to the Asus Flip C101:

https://www.amazon.com/Chromebook-C101PA-DB02-Quad-Core-Lightweight-Touchscreen/dp/B075KFFMZS/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1539625121&sr=8-2&keywords=asus%2Bc101&th=1

10" screen so as big as the iPad. But you also get a decent keyboard and trackpad, and it functions as a tablet as well. Great for media consumption and mild productivity, such as emails and draft writing. Only drawback, its base model only has 16GB eMMC. It's barely enough. There is a 32GB model but that's a touch over your 300 budget.

To be honest, just a sleek watercooled pc inside one of those mini dan cases. Love me a small build. A 1080ti mini and a 2700x (I'll admit I'm an AMD fanboi) and I'd be a-ok. I just want something small and portable that I can bring around places (I'm living on campus in the near future so I want to bring something small I can fit comfortably in a small apartment without being a nuisance to my roommates). And this may besides the point, but I'd also take a surface book 2 to take notes on in class and for general productivity. Yes, all i5 8th generation cpus are faster than that i7(3rd gen). Plus look for decent SSD as storage.
If you want to compare you can visit www.cpubenchmark.com and put in your targeted laptop CPU to see how it stacks up.

Reposted from yesterday because I was ashamed to show the tower, but forgot that the rules make me.

Because I got this question yesterday, I'll go ahead and address it. I moved from retail to work for a good friend of my family. He owns a local business that's been around since the late 1930s, and was started by his grandfather. He's done well, and decided he wants to break into the online sales market, so I'm working with a web developer company to put together an e-commerce site, and once it's up, I'll be running it by myself until it's too much for just me, at which time I will hire people, and train and supervise them.

Only real caveat - the screen won't auto-rotate, so you have to learn the keycombos for screen-rotate or go into the settings menu each time.

u/calden74 · 1 pointr/chromeos

Any number of ChromeBooks fit that description, though I think what you're looking for can be found in the Dell ChromeBook 13.

Though may I suggest an alternative, first Chrome OS can be installed on pretty much any notebook available today. You can either compile a binary yourself or grab one here. Now it's time to choose a notebook, I highly suggest a ThinkPad, in my humble opinion  there the absolute best line of notebooks for alternative OS’s like Chrome OS. I would look at the ThinkPad 12.5. It's a great laptop/hybrid in which even the Wacom Stylus works with Chrome OS.

Though my favorite make shift ChromeBook has to be the Asus Chi T300, it's a fantastic hybrid in it’s one right, but with Chrome OS installed it's elevated to a whole new level, especially with the new DEV version containing the Google Play Store.

Lots to look at and if you have any questions just let me know.

u/canurelaxwow · 1 pointr/stylus

I ordered this one off amazon which is a refurb but it looks and feels like a new laptop. The 4003dx is a 2015 model. I think I saw that they fixed the 2016 issues with active styli but if you want to order a new one you should contact HP and verify.

u/Super_Cyan · 1 pointr/SuggestALaptop

Yeah, I'm thinking about maybe changing my budget to something sub $1k. The Spectre you linked has a 512GB option that's $900 and pretty nice, and the ZenBook series has a couple interesting options (especially this one) that are right around the $1k mark.

The build quality on the ZenBooks are a major draw, and they seems reasonably affordable. I'm looking for something that's going to be better and more portable than the monster I have right now, but I'm willing to give up a bit of portability if it means I get something a bit more powerful.

If you are just doing basic high school tasks like web browsing and word processing, then this Asus Transformer Mini is probably your best bet. It contains

  • 10.1" 1366x768 display
  • Intel Atom Quad-Core x5 processor
  • 4 GB RAM
  • 64 GB EMMC storage (similar to phone storage)
  • Keyboard and pen included

If you absolutely want a cheap 2 in 1 system, then this is the best you can do. In my opinion, I would opt for a traditional laptop with better specs. Though it has great battery life, the screen is definitely not on par with other 2 in 1's and tablet computers. If you need the 2 in 1 feature, then this will get by with most media consumption. Just don't be blown away. The storage is also pretty meager, at just 64 GB of EMMC, you will most likely need to rely on OneDrive or Google Drive to store your files. Otherwise, it does include a keyboard and pen in box, unlike the more expensive Microsoft Surface. If you want more onboard storage and overall better performance, I would suggest its bigger brother which includes an actual 128 GB SSD. Let me know if you have any questions.

u/paupaupaupau · 1 pointr/funny

Eh.... this is arguable. I agree that a lot of the time, apples-to-oranges comparison are made with regard to things like specs and form factor, but there still is a significant premium for Apple products, even when comparing like-to-like.

As an example (I don't feel like researching too much, so this won't be perfectly like-to-like), here's an i5 Zenbook for $780 compared to the base Macbook Air (starting price: $999):
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01LYYUWNM/ref=psdc_13896615011_t2_B014VHWFKA

Pros of the Air:

  • Better battery life (up to 12 claimed versus up to 10 claimed for the Zenbook)

  • Faster storage (PCI SSD vs. M.2 SATA in the Zenbook)

  • Thunderbolt2

  • Magsafe charger (it annoys me that the Zenbook doesn't charge over USB-C)

  • Trackpad (some Windows laptops are at parity with Apple imo, but that doesn't seem to be the case with the Zenbooks)

    Pros of the Zenbook:

  • 7th-gen i5 versus 5th-gen i5

  • Higher screen resolution (1920x1080 compared to 1440x900)

  • Much higher storage capacity (512 GB versus 128 GB in the Air)

  • Thinner (.5" thick versus .68" for the Air)

  • Convertible with touchscreen

Things that are subjective opinion or essentially at parity:

  • Build quality

  • Design

  • RAM capacity and speed

  • Weight

  • OS

  • Backlit keyboard

This is just the 1st one I searched for and seems to be the everyday price on Amazon. Apple products also tend to go on sale much less often and are almost always excluded from more general sales and coupons.

u/bastiano-precioso · 1 pointr/SuggestALaptop

Just out of curiousity, why would you choose that one over this one?

u/LysandresTrumpCard · 1 pointr/SuggestALaptop

I have one last question if you wouldn't mind answering it for me. I've spent a lot of time researching more on the laptop models that the comments have suggested for me, as well as doing my own research on some I like, and I am very close to making a decision. I was just wondering on whether or not you would be able to tell me which one you think would be the best path to follow. I'm asking both you and u/shopineer since your usernames tend to pop up a lot in the subreddit and you both seem like you know what you're doing.

  1. The Acer Aspire E15 - In doing my own research, I'll admit that I really like the sound of this one. The price tag and value you get for this model is incredible, and it looks like this is a positively reviewed laptop on both here as well as Amazon. The general design is a bit bulky but I thoroughly enjoy it for some reason, I'm just not sure how much upgrading it would cost. RAM isn't too much from what I've read but to add an SSD to it rather than rely on the HDD within, that could be a bit costly.

  2. The Acer Spin 5 - This one is also one that I enjoy, but with a somewhat heftier price tag. The 2-in-1 form factor is definitely cool and the SSD included is definitely a boost over standard HDD. My main concern here is whether or not that 2-in-1 form factor would be best used in my hands, seeing as it's still a somewhat large rectangle in tablet mode and I'm not exactly going to take notes or likely draw with it anytime soon. I'm unsure on whether or not this can be easily upgraded (it seems like the RAM is from the reviews I read, which also favor this device, but I can't find anything on SSD upgrades) and the bigger price tag makes me a bit hesitant if the previous option would be better overall.

I ultimately decided against the HP models that were suggested to me in this thread because they didn't seem to have very good reviews upon closer inspection. They're beautiful pieces of machinery but I don't think they're the correct fit for me. The same goes for the Acer Swift 3, since the reviews point to possible bad experiences in comparison to the laptops I've narrowed it down to. Even now I'm hesitant to purchase a used or refurbished unit, hence why I won't attempt to go after a refurbished Surface 2 or 3, and while this Acer Aspire E15 model is tempting, I'm still a bit squeamish since it seems like a very hit-or-miss sort of ordeal.

The main question now is whether it's a better choice to go with an Aspire E15 that can be upgraded, which could serve as something to gain experience from, or whether it would still be the better choice to opt for a Spin 5. Any advice you can give me is greatly appreciated and thank you for taking the time to help everyone here. A lot of us would more than likely be lost without helpful users like you.
u/theallnightrave · 1 pointr/SuggestALaptop

Thanks for your suggestion. How would this Spin 5 handle multiple tabs and videos? I feel like a RAM upgrade will be imminent.

I'm just looking at laptops on Amazon and it's nearly every one. There are a couple models which look like the same chassis used by Dell, Asus, HP, etc that do center the trackpad - so not all. I will say though, there are far more laptops with numeric keyboards than I thought. Regardless, I still don't believe it makes ergonomic sense to shift the track pad like that.

Just a quick click through and I found these that are off center.

How about the [Surface Book 2] (https://www.amazon.com/Microsoft-Surface-Book-Intel-512GB/dp/B076J15LKM/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&qid=1541072713&sr=8-3&keywords=microsoft+surface+book+2&linkCode=ll1&tag=gaming0789-20&linkId=a78112bb87dcffa6b3f8f55eb2b48bf8&language=en_US) which looks less like a gaming laptop. It comes with the latest i8 processor which is very fast, good gpu performance with is gtx 1060 anf a wonderful screen display.

You can get the SurfaceBook 1 without dgpu for under $800 on amazon - I find that an amazing deal and would seriously consider it. I find the keyboard incredibly comfortable for writing papers on.

However if you're looking to maybe spin up some VM's for playing with linux or anything else, I would look for something with a little more RAM and possibly even a quad core. I personally like the Spectre line from HP - they provide much more specs for the dollar than Microsoft. I would recommmend you take a look at some posts at /r/SuggestALaptop

edit: This Spectre has really nice specs.

u/commanderxhalo · 1 pointr/laptops

that one is cheaper because it has an older generation processor. have you considered the HP spectre? it may be a little out of budget but you get a great premium laptop with great specs.

this one is a 2 in 1, has very good b&o audio (it is quite good) has 16gb of ram and a 1080p display, led ofc. 521gb SSD should be sufficient for games and other important files. it is a bit out of budget but it is very good IMO however, you can get a slightly better variant refurbished for less.

Might be very difficult to find Lenovo within a budget of $500.
I recommend this for $679 or this for $635. Both have 13-14" monitors, an SSD and since you said you're not worried about purchasing used I recommend Craigslist or looking at AmazonWarehouse deals which both of these monitors have, one of them are going for under $500 used.

https://www.amazon.com/Dell-Inspiron-Touchscreen-Computer-Quad-Core/dp/B07D56W5KF This is $600 but I highly recommend this because almost all 2-in-1s totally suck below $600.

Vega 8 should be able to play OW at 720p low settings, and Dell's i13 7000 series do have a good track record. But I do need to warn you that budget laptops never have amazing build quality; they might be good but they need to cut corners to keep the price low. You would want a 1080p screen and a decent SSD as well.

Hi! Considering your budget, I think this Dell Inspiron 13 7000 is a good match:

I grabbed one on Amazon the moment I noticed Black Friday fuckery begin. Currently it is $587 https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B07D56W5KF/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

On Newegg it used to be $557 for months before Black Friday. Then they bumped it up to $730 and put a $70 sale for $660. Right not it is $630. https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA6V68D40456&Description=dell%20inspiron%2013.3%202500u&cm_re=dell_inspiron_13.3_2500u-_-9SIA6V68D40456-_-Product

Best buy also had it for $557. Raised the price for Black Friday and did a small sale. Now they are selling full price for $700. https://www.bestbuy.com/site/dell-inspiron-2-in-1-13-3-touch-screen-laptop-amd-ryzen-5-8gb-memory-256gb-solid-state-drive-era-gray/6208228.p?skuId=6208228

Literally anything can run minecraft 😂. Anytime someone on the sub asks for a recommendation for minecraft I throw this out: https://www.adafruit.com/product/2885

Sims 4 is also super lightweight. If you wanna go cheap and entry level you can grab a 1050 or 1650 for the gpu. In fact you can get an AMD cpu and if it has Vega 8 integrated graphics you'll be set for the two tasks you asked. Anything higher will help the longevity of the laptop and make a better investment since you'll have a machine that is relevant for a bit longer.

So you can do what you want with $400ish and probably find some solutions even down $300 if you wanted to. The amd cpus you'll want for Vega 8+ integrated graphics are: 2500u, 2600h, 2700u, and 2800h (or 3000 series with the same scheme). Anything lower has Vega 3-6 and won't meet recommended specs for Sims (will for minimum tho). Here's some examples of machines you could shoot for:

R5 Vega 8 (my min recommended)

R7 Vega 10 (slightly better but right next to the Vega 8)
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07DF9KKRD/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_RbKIDb8QJW60N

Intel i5 + 1650 (exceeds all requirements by almost triple and my recommendation)

I'd recommend going for something with a dedicated gpu but you really don't need to spend the money on it if you guys don't want to because the objective isn't a very hard bar. Obviously it depends on how much modding and what your intentions are, but to meet recommend specs for the games, that's all you need.

>As he doesn't see gaming or any of my free time activites as a valid reason to spend more money on a computer

He's correct.

>Basically I graduated highschool recently, so I'm going to study programming/robotics at a university in couple months.

Look at your future courses. Many will require a computer to help you do the course work. A few of the courses might be aided by a dedicated GPU. Look at the specific programs you'll be using and then look at their system requirements.

Light gaming can be more easily done on an AMD based machine with integrated graphics. If you do go this route then make sure you get a Ryzen based solution and not a much older AMD A or E series APU.

They do! Last year's model had a Ryzen 7 2700U

Do you think the Zenbook would be better than the Vivobooks? Or are they in the same boat. This laptop pretty much fits all my needs but not sure if it's a reliable machine.

u/billFoldDog · 1 pointr/tablets

I own the SP3, but I don't recommend the large tablet form factor.

As far as performance goes, the whole lineup is fine for office applications, web browsing, art, and writing. Pen input is fine and performance is fine. The touch UI on Win10 is tolerable, and the desktop UI is pretty good. Gaming sort of falls apart due to thermal throttling.

The problem comes in the physical form factor of the device:

It is really uncomfortable to use in your lap. Sitting and unfolding it into your lap will leave the keyboard very close to you and the kickstand will put all the weight on two points on your legs. The keyboard flexes a great deal and the mouse can malfunction as a result. Everything works much better on a flat surface.

While standing, the tablet is too big and heavy to easily hold it in one hand and write and tap with the other.

That means the only reasonable use cases for the large tablet form factor are on a desk, or perhaps holding it with two hands and no keyboard.

If you want that ultra-mobile format, maybe get the high end surface go. The smaller form factor will make it easier to manage, but a lot less productive.

Otherwise, I'd stick to the 2-in-1s. I actually bought an Asus Zenbook Flip 14 for my wife earlier this year. It is as mobile as a Surface Pro, easier to use on the lap, and far, far more powerful. The MX-150 NVIDIA graphics card will do indie gaming like you describe just fine, provided you keep the graphics levels down. It has the same top-of-the-line i7 processor you'll see in many tablets, but it has a more robust cooling solution to keep that processor at full speed, and it has 16GB of RAM clocked about 40% faster than what is in the surface lineup.
