Here are the must-haves for anyone:

  1. A helmet that fits

  2. A portable pump like this Lezyne pump in case you get a flat

  3. Backup tire tubes / patch kit / tire levers for the same reason as above

  4. A good bike lock - I like this Kryptonie Series 2 kit

    Optional but nice to have:

  5. Water bottle cage & water bottle

  6. Bike shorts or bib

    Depending on riding conditions:

  7. Bike lights/reflectors

  8. Cold weather riding gear (pants/etc)

  9. For commuters, panniers/etc

  10. Or a small backpack

a spare tube and a patch kit can fit in something smaller than a soda can. A pump is also required, but there are cool frame mounted ones that are small and light and don't get in your way.

I use this one and it's my favorite http://www.amazon.com/Lezyne-Pressure-Drive-Black-Medium/dp/B005X7AHK8/

I use this Pro Bike pump. It's well made, has a hose which is easier to use than direct mount, an inline pressure gauge, and it can be mounted next to your bottles. And it's $30!

I just bought this and it’s fantastic. Takes quite a few pumps to get up to pressure, but the M365 has small tires so it’s really not bad. Super lightweight if you want to take it with you, the gauge seems quite accurate, but the best part is the hose. It’s like a much better version of the one that comes with the scooter. The area you can grab to screw the end on is much longer so you can actually remove the thing fast enough to not lose any air.

I use a cheap digital gauge and this pump. E-PRANCE Mini Bike Pump - Hand... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01MG4BG2Y?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share

It looks to be out of stock, but the recommended items are the same general thing. A cheap $10 pump. Takes about 50 pumps to add a few psi.

We should start a thing, "what's in my OW backpack".

Although obviously I am the minority, the Lezyne MFD failed on me the fourth time I used it. Currently using a Pro Bike Tool pump, which I have not used for all that long, but so far so good.

If you're planning on doing more than just a short commute, you'll want to get:

  • Some padded shorts. Bib shorts are the best as they don't have a waistband to dig into you, but you could get 'baggies' if lycra is not your thing. I use these but I'm not over impressed with the quality, though they are inexpensive compared to most.
  • Some cycling gloves. They'll stop wind chill, stop you grazing your hands if you fall and reduce hand numbness. Typically people use fingerless ones for the summer and fingered ones for the winter.
  • Water bottle. I use these ones as they're dirt cheap and big.
  • Pump. I quite like this one.
  • Spare inner tube. I bought my last batch from Ribble.
  • Patch repair kit. I tend to get cheap ones from Wilkinsons.
  • Tyre levers. I have both plastic and metal ones and the plastic ones are better.
  • Multitool. I use a cheap one I got from Sainsbury's.
  • Saddle bag (for carrying the spare tube, mulitool and patch kit). I use this one and I'm pretty pleased with it.

That's the bare minimum, I'd say. You can ride with less but it'll be less comfortable and more inconvenient when you get a puncture. You'll also need lights if you ride at night, of course. A proper cycling jersey is also really nice and a massive improvement over a t-shirt but you don't need it.

Dont forget a mini pump or CO2. I like the mini lezyne you can fit in a saddle bag instead of mounting to the frame.

here's the one i have. https://www.amazon.com/LEZYNE-Pressure-Drive-Hand-Pump/dp/B005X7AJ3S/ref=dp_ob_title_sports

i've used it several times, and i can get the PSI between 90-100, but it takes some work. it barely sticks out the top of my middle pocket. you definitely want to get one with a flexible hose at a minimum.

That company makes a much better, bigger mini pump that's like a floor pump. I got it so I could ride hard to the trails, soft once I get there, then hard back home. It took me around 5 minutes to go from flat to 15psi in my testing. Haven't had a chance to try it for it's actual purpose yet.

Any reason not to get this one? https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07QHZK8GD I like that it has a pressure gauge.

u/stonecats · 1 pointr/bicycling

can i get a (160psi?) pump recommendation. every few years i have to buy a new pump that i maybe get to use 10 times - because the stupid rubber or piston fails to hold 110psi pressure (presta valve) that i need. i don't need it to be portable, foldable, or any type of "feature", i just want the fucking thing to outlive me and not be just another disposable pos in a landfill. i store my pump in a dry room temp closet, so i don't know what the deal is with these low shelf life pumps, i mean what's the point of having one if it's always going to fail to work when you finally need it. sorry for venting...

ideas thus far;
120: https://www.amazon.com//dp/B01M0R6UP4 (portable gauge no hose)
160: https://www.amazon.com//dp/B0711JKFKG (standard gauge hose)
210: https://www.amazon.com//dp/B01FVX1Z9A (portable gauge hose)
so i can throw it out in a few years,
unless you have a better idea.
