The higher the pressure you run the more often you should check.

I check my 100psi 25mm tires every single day.

I check my 50psi 40mm tires weekly.

If I were you I would not make a hand pump my primary pump and I would not make a separate gauge my primary gauge.

A decent floor pump with gauge is not very much.

Without a doubt the Lezyne Micro Floor Drive in either high pressure out high volume model depending on your tire type. It's like a portable floor pump, works great, only pump I carry. Comes with under bottle cage mount.

I like the Genuine Innovations Ultraflate because it can use unthreaded cartridges. You can even throw a penny in the bottom and it will work with unthreaded 16g cartridges, which are a lot less expensive. But the trade-off is that it's bulky.

CO2 is fast and convenient but the inflators usually fail eventually(and at terrible times) due to the cold gas warping the o-rings.

A mini pump is much more reliable and will stick with you for a long time. I'd strongly recommend a high volume version as it makes the pumping process much faster.

I can't say enough good things about the lezyne tech drive HV: http://www.amazon.com/Lezyne-Drive-HV-Medium-Black/dp/B005X7IUTI/ref=sr_1_8?ie=UTF8&qid=1459164772&sr=8-8&keywords=hv+mini+pump

I have this one and really like it. It lets me transfer all the goods from one bike to another easily.

What I have in mine:

  • CO2 canisters ex
  • CO2 inflater ex
  • Patch kit ex
  • Tire levers ex
  • Allen key tool ex
  • Tweezers (I use these to get things like thorns out of my tire)
  • Spare chain link ex (just be sure you get the correct one)

I'm a fan of the small Lezyne pumps. They come in a high pressure version for skinny tires and a volume version for fatter tires. They are small and fit in a jersey pocket or mount neatly next to a bottle cage. They aren't fast, but none of the little pumps are. You can also get fancy colored aluminum ones for more $$$ if you need to match something.

I just received my rev, and it seems like since the hub motors are kind of in the way, a lot of pump valves might not fit in there. You may need to get a Schrader extension (something like this) depending on what your pump is like. I ordered that extension that I linked, but haven’t gotten it yet so I can’t be positive that it will fit-but it looks like it will.

Edit: never mind, rev comes with valve extenders in the box, I didn’t notice them at first.

It's just a lil 5 gallon! :) The CO2 is the basic Fluval mini co2 kit, but I replaced their diffuser with this bad boy. I usually have it at about 1 bps (bubble per sec).

Also, here's a fun tip! You can get significantly cheaper CO2 cartridges on Amazon! As long as the cartridges have the threading you're good. 6 cartridges for $20, vs 3 for $16. For me, one cartridge usually lasts between 3-4 weeks.

Get the toughest tire pump for your bike that can be used as a weapon. Never tell anyone that you'll use it as a weapon. Just saying you'd use it as a weapon could be illegal. Attach it to the bike where you can grab it and knock some heads. Maybe something like
Klic HP - Gauge https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01M8O2VNP/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_ZEMRDb3J65P39

Another option is a sturdy flashlight loaded with D cell batteries. Again, never tell people it's to be used as a weapon.
Here's a smaller flashlight option.

I didn't want to buy a cheap compressor so I bought one of these instead:

https://www.amazon.com/Airshot-1-15L-Tubeless-Inflator-Color/dp/B01BJ4MXQY/ref=sr_1_fkmr1_1?keywords=air+blaster+tubeless+setup&qid=1566754770&s=gateway&sr=8-1-fkmr1

Seats tires first try every time, and I can also travel with it.

u/SwervingNShit · 2 pointsr/cycling

This Crank Brothers one, also, you can't go wrong with lezyne.

u/[deleted] · 2 pointsr/cycling

If you want to do it properly you will need a proper pump! I got this one which is great value for money and is even cheaper now.

>What make and width do you use?

35c front, 40 rear. I use Schwalbe Mondials because I like doing a mix of gravel, and dirt roads on top of my pedestrian asphalt routes. They're excellent, and seemingly indestructible! :o)

>What is too wide/too narrow?

No such thing, and it's limited by your bike - there are guys touring on 25c, and guys touring on fat bikes. Too thin a tyre will obviously cause some trouble on gravel and mud, so it all really depends on your route, and what you like to do for fun.

>Has anybody experimented with solid tubes? (Thinking mostly for the trailer)

I have, when I was young, and stupid enough to believe the marketing bullshit. They almost killed me too...

Here's what the bible has to say on the matter

I've been dragging a BOB trailer for the past few years. In that time, I've seen only one puncture. The tyre on a trailer isn't holding a lot of weight, and on rougher terrain the lower pressure stops the trailer bumping around (potentially damaging it).

>Any better types of tubes that will be worth the money?

Everyone will have their own opinion of what's best, but in my experience, I've found Schwalbe tubes to hold air-pressure really well. They can do this because they're slightly heavier than some other tubes, but this extra weight is irrelevant on a touring bike.

> Tips, tricks

Buy a pump with a built-in pressure gauge. The "thumb test" just simply will not work on thick-walled touring tyres, and may lead to sub-optimal inflation. This can prematurely wear your sidewall, and in the worst case cause a blow out.

I've just bought a Lezyne Micro Floor Drive, which comes with a gauge, and is beautifully engineered.

I've run Fluval mini's on 4 of my 5-15gal tanks for over a year with no problems. I only run them for about 5hrs after I get home from work and they last about 45days. You can buy the non-fluval tanks for much less on Amazon

I’m probably screwing up on something super basic here, but...

The largest mining truck in the world is the Belaz 75710 (it’s over 60 ft long, with 13 ft tall tires). It takes eight 59/80R63 tires ($65,600 each)! They are each rated to 220,000 lbs @ 110 psi.

Road bike tires are required to be around 80 to 130 psi. This $17 pump on Amazon maxes out at 160 psi.

While it would take you forever, I’m pretty sure you’d be able to pump up the tire to 110 psi without any problems.

I think you’re right the pump couldn’t handle the situation pictured though, because to pump a tire on a vehicle with only 4 wheels, the pump is also having to lift the weight of the vehicle (according to this). I would imagine these small pumps couldn’t overcome that weight.

u/stonecats · 1 pointr/bicycling

can i get a (160psi?) pump recommendation. every few years i have to buy a new pump that i maybe get to use 10 times - because the stupid rubber or piston fails to hold 110psi pressure (presta valve) that i need. i don't need it to be portable, foldable, or any type of "feature", i just want the fucking thing to outlive me and not be just another disposable pos in a landfill. i store my pump in a dry room temp closet, so i don't know what the deal is with these low shelf life pumps, i mean what's the point of having one if it's always going to fail to work when you finally need it. sorry for venting...

ideas thus far;
120: https://www.amazon.com//dp/B01M0R6UP4 (portable gauge no hose)
160: https://www.amazon.com//dp/B0711JKFKG (standard gauge hose)
210: https://www.amazon.com//dp/B01FVX1Z9A (portable gauge hose)
so i can throw it out in a few years,
unless you have a better idea.

If you want a hand pump, I really like this Crank Brothers pump I got recently (about $30) https://www.amazon.com/Crank-Brothers-Klic-HP-Gauge/dp/B01M8O2VNP It has an integrated gauge and both valve types. Also comes with a mount for the bike if you want to mount it.

u/09RaiderSFCRet · 1 pointr/motorcycles

Did you actually blow it or a slow leak/flat? I carry a bicycle style “air tank” that uses a CO2 canister, I carry 2 canisters. It’s very small but will air up a tire pretty good. With only a small leak it’s a huge help. Here’s one similar to what I have.

CO2 Inflator Kit by BICYKIT, Quick & Easy, Bicycle Tire Pump for Road and Mountain Bikes, Fits Presta & Schrader Valves, Insulated Sleeve, THREE CO2 Cartridges and Carrying Case Included https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01M71VPJY/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_Q0ZaBb8NYSR0E

They are not the same thing and you don't need one until you do.

Here is a kit, I have a Bontrager one but they're pretty much all the same.

They're incredibly small and easy to carry a few cartridges in your pack or something and they're only useful if you get a flat tire and can patch it if you're in the woods. Depending on the psi in your tires, like if you run lower psi, like ~20-25 depending on your weight, you are susceptible to pinch flats since you run tubes. So if you get a pinch flat, where your rims bottom out if you hit a big rock or curb hard, you can change the tube and use a cartridge or two to pump it up. A small hand pump would accomplish the same thing but would be slightly more difficult to tote around and use, however you don't need to buy co2 cartridges. Handpump is probably better tbh because you can use it forever and help anybody on the trail no problem but the co2 is smaller, lighter, and more convenient.

For shoes, Five Tens are widely regarded as the best and I picked up a pair of Free Rider Pros (normally $150) for $90 on Ebay brand new in an outdated color but they're fantastic. The base Free Riders are just as good, just a little less stiffer and I think made of canvas and only retail $100 new.

I'm sure you can't go too wrong if you read the reviews but Five Ten has the patent on their rubber soles which are the best atm I believe, however some people say they're TOO sticky so your miles may vary. They're perfect for me though.

I always bring Tire Levers, a new tube, a bike pump, wallet, & phone (I personally ride with a CamelBak, but you could easily fit this in a small underseat pouch). Plan A is fix the flat. Plan B is call a cab. Although I purchased my stuff at LBS, here's some amazon links:

Pump: http://www.amazon.com/Lezyne-Micro-Floor-Drive-HPG/dp/B005UZO7RM/

I have a question: how do you store your CO2 inflator. I just bought my first one (this one).

I see that you can put the cartridge in backwards and the head will poke out a little hole in the bottom, but I worry that it still seems very exposed and might get punctured while jostling around in my saddle bag.

Topeak Ninja P Mini-pump

Gear keg I paid like $5 at my local REI. It's a rebranded Specialized product.

u/SurfPine · 1 pointr/fatbike

If you don't use dropper posts, like me, buy one of these and you'll always have it available in your seatpost: Topeak Ninja P Mini-pump

u/slomar · 1 pointr/cycling

I have one of these. Works rather well. Can be used with or without the core in... CO2 cartridge also works well.

You need a bike pump which is easy to operate
try this one : http://www.amazon.com/Kitbest-Aluminum-Portable-Mountain-Compatible/dp/B011L3LVNY

u/CCLoveMe · 1 pointr/bicycling

I used a portable hand frame bike pump, since I think it is more reliable than co2. this pump is made of a quality aluminum tube body with matte black plastic components. There is a nozzle for both schrader and presta valve stems, rather than needing an adapter, so it is very easy to use for me. Recommend you to try it.

u/manta_style · 1 pointr/MTB

dude you don't even need one of those dakine bags. Just strap a tube to your frame, get a frame pump or c02, and put your multi tool, phone, and keys in your pocket. I use [this] (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B008R5MC60/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o06_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1) strap and [this] (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B078HPJNP5/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o05_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1) pump.

u/Zakamiro · 1 pointr/bicycling

I just bought this, or at least this same thing but as a different brand, the serfas tcpg floorpump. I don't know how to linkify text, so pardon this:

http://www.amazon.com/Serfas-TCPG-Bicycle-Floor-Pump/dp/B00CBKJUDK

I have had it for about a week, and have had to 8 tire inflations with it so far, with both presta and schrader, and I'm still amazed by how it works, but it does. It seems durable and decent quality, and I have no regrets getting it considering the value I think I'm getting out of it.

u/bmwtrekpse · 1 pointr/bicycling

I'm looking at buying this - Crankbros

Any luck with this anyone?

u/itsmoirob · 1 pointr/AskUK

If your embarrassed you can always just buy a foot pump and use that at home.

I bought one for the bicycle but use it on the car also. One like this https://www.amazon.co.uk/Vandorm-Legend-Bicycle-Inflator-Schrader/dp/B009KLWRG0
