They sell electronic locks that use a fob to unlock. Something like this ETEKJOY RFID Electronic Cabinet Lock Hidden DIY for Wooden Drawer Cabinet, Ready for Use & Programmable https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B07G5MPC95/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_pleiDb0FXS8CB
I believe they sell ones that use phone apps as well. Wouldn’t wreck the exterior but still lock it so kids can’t get at it.

I think something like this would be pretty unobtrusive while adding a significant amount of reinforcement and weight distribution. Put a pair of these on the bench back/table underside and it's no different than a plaque on a bench.

The rule says not to make your title something like "pls help I'm noob". In the dark eras past, there were entire streams of such posts and it makes sorting through them a pain. It's in fact encouraged to mention in the post body if you are a beginner, so you don't get thrown into the deep water :)

There's a chance your bulb uses some inconveniently high voltage to drive the LED strings, and there is a decent chance the bulb doesn't have enough current capability to power an electric lock solenoid. I said not impossible, but probably less convenient (and safe) to work around its peculiarities than making it from scratch.

Showcase locks such as the one in the link or better ones if you wanna go fancy or shims as others have suggested for a budget

The biggest hassle is usually the battery requirement; if you've got plenty of room in the box for batteries then it's a fun project.

There are various solenoid door latches available. I like this style because it has a pusher to open the door when it unlatches. In addition to the Arduino and a 12V battery you'll need a MOSFET or relay to pulse the latch.

The same locks used on the sliding glass doors of store displays.

I have a consolevault in my truck - and honestly, if they had any sort of return policy, I might not have it today. The fact that they don't should say something too... The overall makeup of the safe is pretty solid - it's thick metal that'd take some work to defeat - but it wasted probably half of the volume of my console because they simplified it to a basic square box and use a top cap to make it look flush - but it wastes an absolute ton of usable space. In addition, the lock is seriously the weak point... it's a simple desk style cam lock. I also don't like that you have to leave the dial on the combination, meaning my kids can see the combo and know it. I'd really like to upgrade it to this and still might (it's made by the same company that makes all their lock options) - but they told me it'd void the warranty... but I really may switch it out. Edit - vehicle is a GMC truck.

You're going out of town. She's going to have a party. You might as well agree to it, so you have at least some control over it. If you refuse, and she does it anyway, it's going to be a much larger problem.

So what you do is spend a little time going over the public areas with her. Talk about what rooms and places are acceptable for guests and what ones are not. You also may want to get something like this for your bedroom door, to make sure no one goes in.

But the main reason to go over all of the public areas with her is so you can both take photos and take note of any pre-existing damage to your things, or your home. Ask her to point out anything just like if she was renting a car or completing a lease agreement for a new apartment.

Once you've agreed on where the party can take place, and the condition of the things in those areas, then you need to explain to her that any damage to your belongings will be her personal responsibility to replace. Tell her that even something so small as a scratch on the remote control will mean she has to replace your TV.

Then explain that any damage to your home or property will be professionally repaired or restored at her expense. This doesn't mean she can put you off by saying "Oh Jim-Bob broke the door handle, but he's going to replace it." It doesn't mean that she can give you 10 gallons of paint and call it even for a scratched wall, unless you agree to accept a substitution for professional repairs after assessing the damage yourself.

It doesn't matter who caused the damage, or what repayment options she's going to make with her guests if they break something. That's her problem. Instead, she will pay you back immediately, to your satisifaction. Then she can do whatever she wants about it with the person who did it.

But ultimately, it's on her. If she doesn't trust her friends to be respectful of her home, she shouldn't invite them to her party. But as long as she's willing to accept the responsibility there's no reason she shouldn't be allowed to have a party. Even if she doesn't own the place, she still pays rent and (for now) she still gets to call it home.

edit: Fixed the link, had a bunch of needless /ref garbage in it.

Hunh. That's got a weird hub on it.

Whatever. Measure the cylinder front to back. Looks probably like a 1 1/4" one. Than go get something like this that matches your height, replace the hub with the one from that one, and you're golden.

A latch solenoid should only be activated to unlock, and then only for a short time, lest it overheat. These should be fine for batteries. However, solenoids are generally pretty weak; any pressure, whether from spring or human pulling or warped hinge or anything will tend to bind them up. Car door locks are better. A linear actuator is very strong and reliable, but usually aren't short enough to be a latch.

You may be interested in a cabinet latch. This type has a nice "pop" open.

If I'm not mistaken, this is the lock that all the others are copying https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07P6HQV5T/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_0BQNDbNDVVQNN

Structurally, this one is almost - passable. Not good, far from great - but beats a paper sack. It's only passable when it's "cage" is used. Without it's 'cage', it's pretty much a paper sack. But, that lock - it's a joke. Trivial to open with a jiggler, nail clipper or even a narrow strip of credit card.

I've ordered up a couple of these - it's a bit better, still not 'good' - but, better. IF, (big if) I can get it fitted, it may just be - usable.

I'll know better after UPS delivers the goods.

What kind of lock is it? Is it like a standard cam lock? I was wondering if it could be replaced by something like this

u/TheCopenhagenCowboy · 1 pointr/LifeProTips

What's the purpose of the lock? (I know the purpose) but does the door itself not have a lock or are you trying to keep people out who have keys like RAs?

Look at this. By looking at the design, it should work on the exterior of an outside swinging door.

u/n17ikh · 1 pointr/homelab

The locks on my Dell rack (and most racks) are typically cheap standard-issue cabinet locks. They may use a different cam but in my experience you can take the cam off the old lock and put it on the new one. The main variables for that kind of lock are length and diameter, so get those right and you'll be able to find drop-in replacements anywhere.

I also like thumb turn locks for this application, since they have about as much security as those crappy cylinder locks and are a lot less annoying than using a screwdriver after drilling them out.
