Try it on Google Cardboard first to get a taste (You'll need an Android smartphone I'm afraid):

> Also, where are the headsets that come with straps? I couldnt find any on this Google Cardboard page here[https://www.google.com/get/cardboard/get-cardboard/]

That's because Google's official Cardboard specs require users to hold the viewers in place. This is because head-mounted viewers encourage users to turn too quickly, leading to nausea.

Of the official Cardboard viewers approved by Google, these look like the best:

  • Mattel View-Master VR ($19.97 @ Amazon)
  • I AM Cardboard DSCVR ($29.99 @ Amazon)
  • Powis ViewR 2.0 ($29.99 @ Amazon)

I have the Mattel View-Master VR and it works well with the Nexus 5, though I have to use a Bluetooth headset if I want stereo sound (since there isn't an opening for wired headphones).

If you want a headstrap, you'll either have to modify one of the official viewers or buy an unofficial headset (just beware that many of the unapproved plastic viewers have narrow field-of-view).

This was the app: http://www.amazon.com/Dragon972-MIKI-KISS-VR-CARDBOARD/dp/B014BXFSRQ

Like I said, basic and some issues (menu buttons are too small, sound effects looped too quickly, but nothing major) definitely worth the $1 though.

This is the cardboard I'm using: http://www.amazon.com/Kollea-Cardboard-Glasses-Virtual-Reality/dp/B018G1CJ3U/ (I glued some foam to the nose cup since it, uh, interfered...)

PART TWO -- wrote this before seeing your VIVE arrives... basically tomorrow

-=- recommended accessories -=-
get the Deluxe Audio Strap. this is a MUST HAVE.

https://www.amazon.com/HTC-Vive-Deluxe-Audio-Strap-pc/dp/B06Y2GDXMC/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=htc+vive+deluxe+audio+strap&qid=1555922928&s=videogames&sr=1-1

i don't consider this an accessory...this is just absolutely CRUCIAL. installation took me ~15-20 minutes after watching a youtube video on how to install as the instructions that ship with it are ...lacking. there's a video of a german guy who shows you have to install it easily.... this strap adds not only great sounding, adjustable and comfortable headphones but (more importantly) will secure the HMD in a way that makes the default strap seem laughable. this deluxe strap allows more comfortable wear of the HMD, better cord management and eliminates the need for supplying your own audio (be it earbuds or headphones) while i ordered all of these "accessories" and received them before my VIVE, i decided to try the original / shipped strap before installing the "deluxe" and words can't describe the difference in fit, comfort, and how great the audio from the adjustable integrated earphones sound. the headphones are able to "snap" in an upright position when you are either removing /storing the HMD or just need to lift one up to hear something someone is trying to tell you...

-=-2nd suggestion for "accessories"-=-

probably most important second only to the deluxe audio strap.... get these tripods. you don't want to mount your lighthouses to your wall... with these tripods you are able to place your lighthouses without drilling/mounting. it is way worth the investment as the stands are very secure, adjustable and the lighthouses screw directly into them. no other parts needed, just these two stands... you'll realize that you might have to fine-tune/tweak the placement of the lighthouses slightly, and with these stands you are able to make adjustments (not only in placement but with the ball/swivel you are able to change the angle/pitch etc.) which you couldn't do if you mounted them.

-=-honorable mention -- not necessary but recommended...-=-

when i purchased my vive i made sure to get a nice stand to set the HMD/controllers on... (...i went a bit overboard with other accessories and for brevity i'll only mention two more accessories that i think you should pick up) here's the HMD/controller stand i purchased for when either storing the vive or to set it on while taking breaks/cooling off... . it isn't an absolute necessity but it gives it a nice place to rest the HMD/controllers during breaks between play (you will sweat a lot even in a cold room, i know i'm out of shape but with titles like sairento, sprint vector, space pirate etcetc i take breaks just to let my face breathe and cool off.) this beats just setting the HMD on the ground or on a nearby table which could easily fall off.... your call, but -- again, protect your investment!

"Skywin VR cable management system"
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0733NN7G8/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

-- these are simply pullies that attach to your ceiling, allowing the cable to be out of the way of the ground... personal preference here but i find these very useful (especially with titles where i'm moving around a lot... sairento, gorn, QuiVR etc) ... protip: i went to walmart etc, purchased -several- packs of 3M "Command" large picture and frame hanging strips 16lb "large picture hanging strips" and have them all over my ceiling at different strategic places (depending on if i'm playing a title that requires my entire room i.e having to move my bed for the max. play area, or if i'm playing a title that requires only the smallest room setup or even for sitting) so using the 3M strips instead of the adhesive that comes with the pullies in the kit, i'm able to switch around the location of the pullies to suit each above situation...also, they remove without damaging your ceiling... if you have any questions on this just message me and i'd be happy to elaborate.
-=-
last accessory suggestion -- after watching videos of people punching holes in their walls etc. i decided to grab these protective frames which have saved my walls and possible harm to my controllers when demoing my vive to friends (even though when demoing i always have chaperone on "beginner", floor bounds on etc) it -never- fails that they will try to throw a grenade and hit my ceiling, swing a punch while playing Gorn and instead of my vive controller slamming into the wall, the cage around the circular top part absorbs the impact and deflects/redistributes the force from one point of contact to several. just throwing this out there, just in case you or someone you are showing it to will be inadvertently throwing your controller into your wall

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B06XDLMYMQ/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o05_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

final thoughts/closing: hmm. well, i think i said a LOT here and hope that your experience with installation is pleasant. again, let us all know how your first experience went and feel free to ask any questions.

I use this stand. Has good balance and the HMD and new controllers fit perfectly. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07FFVTCDJ/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_Ssn6CbP7ASRSS

I have seen pully systems that people attach to their ceiling. The pulleys have retractable cords that can be pulled down. This is the best system I have seen yet... They use these: DS.DISTINCTIVE STYLE VR Accessories Cable Management 6 Packs - Drill Free Retractable Ceiling Suspension System for HTC Vive/HTC Vive Pro Virtual Reality/Oculus Rift/Playstation VR/Microsoft MR https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07H4H9TN5/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_wOvCCbRAPR0Y4

Within your budget:
Viewmaster
https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B011EG5HJ2/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_1XeCxbMKD9AJ9

Slightly over your budget but a better headset:
I AM Cardboard DSCVR Headset
https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B018G17K52/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_IYeCxbTAHEVFK

Over budget but the best headset in its price range (button is a bit iffy on iPhones though for some reason)
BOBOVR VR Z4
https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B01CEBKXJK/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_oZeCxb4ZVCA18

I own all of these, they all have the button and work with iPhones. I had to modify the button on the BoboVR to get it to work properly though.
The Viewmaster is ok, the field of view isn't great, and it looks a bit kiddy, but it is robust and has good clarity.
The DSCVR is pretty much just a plastic version of Cardboard 2.0, but sometimes the more straightforward the better, I found it very good, although the strap that holds the phone looks like it will wear overt time.
BoboVR is by far the best though all round, great comfort, great fov, adjustable lenses (which the other 2 don't have) and the headphones are actually really good.

u/xroninbladex · 3 pointsr/beatsaber

Maybe consider getting something like this for parties. Personally, I just remove the foam, wring it under some warm soapy water, and air dry it before a party. Then, during the party, just wipe it down with a disinfectant wipe between uses.

u/Tosplayer99 · 3 pointsr/PSVR

You can take the silicone like lightblock out of the headset and clean it with water, afterwards you can put it back on. I wouldnt cut it out permanently, if at any point you decide to sell it you wont get much if any money for it.

Its not much of a deal, you can also buy something like this, dont need to be this expensive 1000 piece set, you get a small pack for like 20$ and with this you can protect the headset from becoming too dirty.

u/kline6666 · 3 pointsr/OculusQuest

The official one is too tight anyway.

These should work though you need to cut the foam yourself:

https://smile.amazon.com/CASEMATIX-Headset-Compatible-Controllers-Customizable/dp/B07MJM6JKC/

There are also a couple of compatible Navitech cases/backpacks but they all take too long to ship, so I ended up ordering this one:

https://smile.amazon.com/Hard-Travel-Case-Oculus-Rift/dp/B071RWHPWG/

Arriving tomorrow :)

Based off the internal dimensions, it should fit the Quest, and probably some extra like powerbank and stuff.

u/itsmy1stsmokebreak · 2 pointsr/OculusQuest

Other than the AMVR cover there's also disposable pieces that can be used for demos like these.

u/krakou · 2 pointsr/GearVR

The face foam (don't know the name) can be detached and should be washed from time to time (with care) using an antibacterial detergent/soap, even more if other people besides you are using the headset.

It takes all the oils, sweat and dirt from the skin and can become a nest of bacteria and may even begin to smell, this is not hygienic, so the care with that part of the headset should be bigger than with the lenses that in general are more protected and does not have direct skin contact.

There are disposable masks that you can buy or make with very fine felt, paper towel, etc. to avoid direct contact with the headset foam, Ideal if multiple people use the headset.
Really easy to do, no need for elastic and any paper towel with a hole for the eyes will serve.

Google cardboard. Don't pay more than 3 or 4$ for it. This = ripoff. This = good price. Any cardboard experience, especially with an iphone, will be much, much worse than what you get with Samsung's Gear VR or a high-end Rift/Vive/PSVR. All it can do is give you a taste of VR, so the horrible latency, possible framerate issues, bad lenses, bad display, etc. are all solved in better VR (except for resolution, that's still an issue). Still a fun way to spend a few dollars though.

My Vive DAS is still being shipped but I got this case that, according to the comments, does fit the Frankenquest mod:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07SRLXN3T/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Unfortunately it doesn't work too well with the Mamut grips I just got in today. Hoping to find a case that can fit both so if anyone has recommendations let me know!

I forgot a C.... I always do that... xD

Bit downside is that this doesn't come with strap so you have to hold it... and the fact that there are no padding doesn't make it ideal for long term use

u/yeeah_suree · 2 pointsr/OculusQuest

i got this one am very happy with it, only $10 more and there is more room for cables and the charger. controllers are away from the lens and it comes with a lens cover, has a bungee strap that securely in place and also has 55 reviews all with 5 stars.

Cardboard is ok to see if you even like VR, but Amazon sells really cheap headsets of much better quality that are more comfy.

I got these recently and they're much better and more comfy.

u/qruxtapose · 2 pointsr/OculusQuest

The long wait for the VRCover drove me to find an alternative so I took a gamble on some Vive face cushions. There are probably better alternatives but here is what I did:

Bought this

https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B07FCHYD6T/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o04_s02?ie=UTF8&psc=1

and this

https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B0010HADEA/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o04_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I cut the velcro strips into little rectangles and put them on the glasses spacer, then I simply attached the face cushion to spacer. It doesn't fit perfectly, you gotta work it into the correct shape. However I actually dig the foam padding, it's more comfortable than the stock foam and doesn't absorb sweat which I really like. It's not a high quality product though, there is some tearing at the seams but it doesn't seem to be getting any larger. Also depending on how you get the cushion to fit there could be a little leakage on the sides, not much though. I don't know notice it at all while playing. No idea if that makes the Quest vulnerable to sun damage so be careful and don't blame me if you damage your Quest. Lastly, the foam makes wearing certain glasses uncomfortable, I use some thin harry potter style glasses for VR though and they work just fine. Obviously not a perfect solution but it works well for me.

Edit: Just noticing there are Vive Pro cushions (I hadn't noticed before). Those might work out better for glasses. Can't say for sure.

Any of the v2 ones should work. I got this one but all the v2 cardboard can handle this size phone.

Kuula for iOS: https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/kuulavr/id1193732375

As for the VR headsets, I use a little thing called Homido Mini - it's quite cool, but no strap (in fact, no cardboard even - it's just binoculars) http://www.homido.com/en/mini

I also have the 2nd gen Google Cardboard and it is very good (at least as good as a device of this type can be ;) It doesn't have a head strap either, but tbh I don't think a head strap is useful for this class of devices. https://www.amazon.com/Google-87002822-01-Official-Cardboard/dp/B01L92Z8D6/ref=sr_1_3?s=wireless&ie=UTF8&qid=1484548646&sr=1-3&keywords=google+cardboard

Finally, if you can afford it, get a Samsung Gear VR - this is another level of VR experience... and has a head strap too :) http://www.samsung.com/global/galaxy/gear-vr/

u/CheetosOnToast · 2 pointsr/Vive

Oh yeah I know what you mean. The fan looks cool (lel), but I find that I'm the sweatiest where the sponge directly hits my face so I'm not sure how much that would solve the problem.

Someone already suggested the faux leather covers which works pretty great. Another product that's pretty good are disposable VR masks. They're not cost efficient for personal use, but it's great to have some on you if you're borrowing someone's, or if people want to try yours. It's especially a win for makeup wearers, because foundation is a drag to wipe off even from the faux leather.

Aside from that, I turn on the AC or open a window. I find that feeling a bit cold is the perfect temperature to VR with.

u/geeneepeegs · 2 pointsr/OculusQuest

Thanks for the suggestion! Was planning to become much fitter when my Rift arrives with daily exercise as well as incorporating Beat Saber (amongst other games) but never knew about BoxVR!

Have you considered purchasing disposable VR masks? I feel they'd be a necessity if doing intense workouts.

u/kadengoldaAMD · 2 pointsr/GoogleCardboard

What phone do you suggest? Need to be gyro, at least 1080p for vr. i could go HTC one m8 which has gyro and 1080p screen but limited storage. I have this headset: https://www.amazon.com/Glasses-Magicoo-Virtual-Cardboard-smartphones/dp/B016ULRGPE/ref=sr_1_8?ie=UTF8&qid=1473306708&sr=8-8&keywords=google+cardboard
I can vents on the back if it would work.

u/FlatGarbage · 2 pointsr/PSVR

I too was worried after hearing about people's controllers being killed so I opted for this one https://www.amazon.com/Dinly-Virtual-Reality-Headset-Display/dp/B07F9VT2KL/ref=mp_s_a_1_13?keywords=psvr+stand&qid=1562358590&s=gateway&sr=8-13

It doesn't charge anything but it does the job of holding the headset nicely and looks sleek as hell.

u/OminousDrDrew · 2 pointsr/oculus

I get off work in 2 hours.
I have two dog leashes, one has a little plastic wheel bearing so the cable can slide on it, while being pulled above my head.

The other is zip-tied to a spot in the cable to keep it tight-ish.

Came across this on Amazon yesterday, which I wish was a thing when I made my setup a year ago.

https://www.amazon.com/Skywin-Management-HTC-Virtual-Reality-Headset/dp/B0733NN7G8/ref=sr_1_16?ie=UTF8&qid=1523359178&sr=8-16&keywords=vive

I understand about the SteelSeries; I can live with the drawbacks. For what I can find it's the only one small enough that carrying it around won't be too ridiculous. My interest here is relatively casual.

I'm looking forward to your opinion on the set you have coming. Please update us here if you think highly of it.

Edit: Possibly this one http://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B016ULRGPE/ ? It has a button mechanism.

I have this one: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00S7R0UIA/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1 and it works but if you have a case on, it doesn't fit as well. Unfortunately not very comfortable but I added foam and it's much better now.

u/carrotstien · 1 pointr/GoogleCardboard

For 30 bucks THIS ONE is better if you are in a hurry. If you aren't in a hurry, BoboVRZ Z4 is better (but you have to order from china..aside from the occasional amazon/ebay)

u/PandaReich · 1 pointr/gaming

I feel like the cardboard one is nice to see if you actually will use VR on your phone, to find out it would be worth a $20 (or possibly more) investment for a nicer one.

u/joonaspaakko · 1 pointr/OculusQuest

If I coil up the cable by itself, it fits into either of the zipper pockets in this thing. I searched for it with just: "oculus quest case". You can find the same case under many different names.

I have been putting in Anker Powercore 10000 pd redux + 3 feet right angle cable from ugreen + a microfiber cloth + the power adapter and I was still able to fit in the full length cable when I tried just now.

For the record, I think I could fit 2 more of the same powerbank in there still, if I wanted.

There's also a bit of extra room in the back where the glasses spacer sits.

u/kr_porcus · 1 pointr/virtualreality

I thought they were all the same at that price - derivatives of the basic Google Cardboard V2 design. But I've been happily amazed by the Magicoo, a hard-shell with a headstrap, button, good light blocking, reasonable padding, and a removable view-through window for AR. It looks like a Star Wars stormtrooper training accessory.

I dunno about customization, but after a long search I got this https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00PQA5DVU/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o07_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

It's comfortable, strongish, and has only-somewhat-effective nearsightedness adjustment. But, pretty good!

u/Gallychucky · 1 pointr/jobuds

I use this one.

u/QTpopOfficial · 1 pointr/oculus

I used a second one of the things that came with my pack at the shortest length to "soften" the tension enough that it didn't pull so much.

I also had to ziptie my cable to the headset so it didnt yank out of the front when I would go prone, plus it felt weird until I had it centered in the back.

The length, I found my prefect length was where it had a literal 1 inch of slack when I was standing dead center room.

Hope that helps. :)

EDIT: This is the kit I used. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0733NN7G8 I used standard J hooks, Stickers don't work for me.

u/reelznfeelz · 1 pointr/Pimax

Yeah, you're gonna want 2 light houses, but 1 will work in a pinch for some stuff, seated sims etc. Looks like valve sells them now, the 2.0 versions, but they're $150 each which is painful. It's still possible to just buy a cheap used OG vive kit and use the light houses and even vice wands from that to get started. That's what I did and was lucky enough to find a like-new vive setup with a DAS on Craigslist for $300.

I have the index controllers, but might bust out the vive wands again and have them nearby since not many games support the index controllers yet. A lot of games are just unplayable with them, eg fallout 4, Thumper. Over time more games should hopefully support them though. And there are apps to do custom steamvr controller overrides, I just don't like having to dick around with that kind of stuff because it's tedious and seems like doesn't work half the time.

I'd say the DAS with thicker face foam (there's a cheap Amazon version of the foam that works) is a must for comfort. Mine literally hurt to wear until I did the DAS mod and thicker facial foam. Now it's very good.

Face foam I got:

I suggest waiting for Daydream or something because from my personal experience all the other headsets are just Google Cardboard lenses with a strap on the back. I personally use the Google Cardboard for developing purposes only, but my friend has this headset and he really enjoyed it.

Ok I'm pretty into VR stuff so I've treid pretty much everything. Have you tried either GearVR or the higher quality stuff like the HTC Vive/Oculus Rift? If you have, the headsets you can use a V10 with are not nearly as good as those. I've had a couple of Google Cardboard variants, of which my favorite is probably this one. I mainly just use it for taking Cardboard panoramas, which are basically 360 panoramas with some 3D-ness and recorded sound. Great for taking at a scenic lookout or something.

That being said, this is not really a VR-ready phone. It has a high quality screen which is great, but something like a Gear S7 with the GearVR will be oodles better.

Nice job with mixed reality, it think it's really important in a VR arcade.

I heard in the video that you use leader instead of foam for your headsets, did you consider the hygiene masks for VR (ex: https://www.amazon.com/Hygiene-VR-headset-Oculus-PlayStation/dp/B01ELKKT1Y) ?

I use this stand AFATIH VR Stand,Headset Display Stand for Oculus Rift or Rift S Headset. VR Holder for Most VR Glasses-HTC Vive,Playstation VR and More https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07FFVTCDJ/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_lWaCDbTQEPJKR

It works great and I have base facing the wall so no worries on sunlight damage. I typically keep all the blinds closed in my pc room anyway because I prefer VR in the dark.

The basic specs are not that difficult to achieve, you can buy similar mobile phone based products on Amazon right now and similar optical trickery has been used in flight simulators for ages.

I don't know what exactly the short comings of this approach are, but I assume there are some, given that both Microsoft and MagicLeap didn't went this route and opted to go with different technology (which is much more expensive, yet nowhere near a 90° FOV).

But it doesn't really matter much anyway, as with just 3DOF tracking the thing is essentially useless, it's just TV glasses which have been around for ages at all levels of quality and never been more than a tiny niche. For real AR you need proper 6DOF tracking so that you can anchor objects in the real world and on top of that you need tons of software to make it useful, which these guys don't have.

Edit: Article showing some more similar headsets

Hey more advertisers!

Here's a link to the amazon page for a 15 USD google cardboard. In case you want to buy one but still don't want to get scammed.

Have you considered using some of the paper hygienic facemasks that each user can put on (over the ears) before using the HMD?

If not you could try this

Try browsing amazon. Here's one that I've had my eyes on that seems very decent for a first (or second) headset. It has a capacitive touch button and an nfc button. I don't own it myself, but it seems very good.
