Just a suggestion, get your dog a harness that attaches to the seatbelt. I have the Kurgo Tru-Fit Crash Tested Dog Harness. If you love your dog, you don't want to slam on the brakes and have him fly into the car dash. Or God forbid, worse if you get into an accident.

u/breezymcgz · 8 pointsr/Dogtraining

Thirded, as soon as we got our puppy a front hooking harness he stopped pulling. We got this one.

u/snakenecks · 7 pointsr/dogswithjobs

Does your friend’s dog have the “do not distract during job” or something like that service dog vest ?
My classmate had it and when I asked them about the effective of the vest and she said it’s worked fairly well expect for some children

u/ThomsDroopingEye · 6 pointsr/running

I have a border collie mix, and I agree they make great running partners. For the lead I use the Easy Walk harness -- it's over the shoulders instead of a collar (more comfortable), and it diverts their forward momentum so they can't pull.

That said, my dog is only 3 years old and it's fairly easy for me to tire her out on long runs. I have to leave her at home if I'm doing more than 5 miles or if it's too hot. Keep an eye on your dog, they're not all built for endurance.

u/Na3s · 6 pointsr/woodworking

Hi OP I noticed you had your tied into your car which is a good thing! but if you were to get in a crash that setup would break your dogs neck or rip the head-rest off. I would suggest you buy this (https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B009CE8106/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1478392199&sr=8-1&keywords=kurgo+harness&dpPl=1&dpID=41V3RoFG6iL&ref=plSrch) it's a crash tested harness and it will distribute the crash over their entire body and is much safer because it attaches to the seatbelt also it's only $18. Great intentions but the setup is ineffective.

u/apathycoalition · 5 pointsr/explainlikeimfive

They don't. That's why they sell truck bed leashes, harnesses, and other things to keep the dog from doing something stupid.

u/kneauxp · 5 pointsr/shiba

Thanks!! It’s this harness. Overall it’s fine but pretty stiff and bulky, I got it because I needed one with a front leash attachment. For obvious reasons lol.

u/radddchaddd · 4 pointsr/goldenretrievers

Hey! It's a Halti harness, and I have it paired with the leash.

I can't recommend it enough. It's super easy to put on and take off. Also, he gets excited when squirrels run by. I had a harness like this before, which he was easily able to pull with. With this harness, I can control him from the chest and back, which makes it really easy to keep him under control.

u/bbcabbageface · 4 pointsr/shiba

harness lead my shiba was constantly getting out of his harness before this one! I highly recommend it

u/brianna1981 · 4 pointsr/JeepWrangler

Mine has a seat belt "short leash" I got online very similar to this one [https://www.amazon.com/dp/B076TC88MV/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_773XDbRGH49H3] and even when she's in the front seat with me I'm able to hook my seatbelt thru so that she's always attached. She may be a tiny 8 lbs but when she sees a leaf or an animal there's no stopping her!

u/Barkbringer · 3 pointsr/puppy101

You can probably ask the breeder to measure for you and look for something adjustable to have ready.

My puppy went through so many harnesses, and it was almost impossible to find ones that fit a 2lb puppy at all, but this style has by far been the easiest to grow with for us.

u/Zelophobic · 3 pointsr/dogs

You could try accessorizing your dog a little bit...This harness is a pretty nifty tool in my opinion. I work with shelter dogs and have "adopt me", "no dogs" and "caution" versions and it at least decreases our negative experiences if I have to put the dog in a bad situation.

First idea, if you see another dog coming, then have your dog sit and focus on you. You need to try communicating with the owner and can't watch your dog for a few seconds, sit will keep them out of trouble. If the owner sees you stopped, then they will be aware that something is up.
The message you want to send to other owners is that you're not ready yet. More people will respond to "in training and can't deal with you yet" than "get your dog on a leash, wtf are you doing?" You're not trying to berate people for being off-leash, you're just trying to take care of your fluff.

Another potential solution if you feel comfortable is to try and body block the incoming dogs if you can get yours to sit off to the side or behind you as both dogs and people will understand this as "hey, go away" and again communicate "hey, we're not ready for this."

Good luck! Thanks for taking on a challenging dog and keeping them exercised. Go you!! Hope it improves.

I don’t know how well this would work in a car, but my escape artist has never managed to escape out if this

u/LeonAquilla · 3 pointsr/Trucks

Its tricky but the secret is don't drive like a maniac with dogs in the bed. Having dogs that weigh 50+ helps too.

I do have a couple of these though. Highly recommend them.

Rabbitgoo Dog Harness No-Pull Pet Harness Adjustable Outdoor Pet Vest 3M Reflective Oxford Material Vest for Dogs Easy Control for Small Medium Large

I got it off Amazon and so far so good. It's got a clip on the back as well - so you can switch between the two as needed.

Also, the instructions it comes with shows it on backwards - just look at the pictures people post on there for orientation. Logo should be on their back, not the chest.

u/Awesomedeer · 2 pointsr/MadeMeSmile

One of my mals was abused and neglected. Stun prods, yelling, etc. This turned her into an aggressive scared dog at four years of age. Really a shame because shes the fastest dog I have ever worked with and has lots of potential. She gets very scared/anxious during thunder storms. I used a regular work vest and a thunder shirt with her during stressful moments. They really do help. It's important not to cuddle or baby them during these times. If you do this they will become more reliant on you rather than fixing the issue themselves.

Just got this and am a fan so far!

u/touchdowntonabbey · 2 pointsr/greatdanes

Another short Dane owner checking in! (5'2) The EZ walk harness is a really big help to reduce pulling. Also, I cannot recommend finding a good dog trainer and making sure that your Dane is well socialized enough! Some people are going to be physically intimidated by such a large dog- and the more training you have in, the less anxiety both you and your dog are going to have.

https://www.amazon.com/PetSafe-Easy-Harness-Medium-ROYAL/dp/B000BHWMYO/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1495027306&sr=8-1&keywords=EZ+walk

As long as you are prepared for the, "Are you walking that dog or is she walking you" type of jokes- walking a dane as a smaller stature person is really fine.

Owning a Dane is such a joy (we have 2!)- they are big sweethearts! More to cuddle!

u/SheytanHS · 2 pointsr/Dogtraining

There are "do not pet" vests, and if you leave your dog unattended and think she might bite, I would strongly recommend using one. It could save your own dog's life by avoiding a bad situation where she injures somebody, who then presses charges.

Vest:

https://www.amazon.com/Harness-Removable-Reflective-Patches-Purchase/dp/B00BOWR0L0/

Bandana:

https://www.amazon.com/NEED-SPACE-Bandana-Medium-Large/dp/B01AVJNNDA/

If I thought my dog was somewhat likely bite somebody, I would have every possible vest, bandana, collar, etc. available on him to warn others avoid that possibility. Heck I'd consider strapping on a speaker that plays "Do not pet, I may bite" over and over.

u/cakesngiggles · 2 pointsr/reactivedogs

I got this one after my 55lb dog broke his basic pet store harness while bolting at an animal. I love that it has two clips (though the front one looks less sturdy) and is adjustable on the sides.

u/retractableclause · 2 pointsr/Dogtraining

Does your dog know how to heel? If he doesn't know he's supposed to be doing anything else, he's just going to pull. You need to refocus him so he has a job to do. Heeling is a great tool - it gives your walk purpose for the dog, and helps keep you both safe from being dragged into traffic.

Try a stop and go technique. It requires a lot of patience but is effective if you can stick with it. When he pulls, stop moving. Right now he knows that pulling = forward movement. You need to rewire that thought process so he learns that pulling = no movement. When he lets the leash slacken or he sits (or does anything other than pull), move again. Stop as soon as he pulls again.

I'd also recommend an easy walk harness. I use one when my dog will be in unfamiliar places. She's a good walker normally, but will still occasionally lunge in a new place if she's only on her collar (sees water or birds and forgets that she's dragging me halfway around the earth). The harness shouldn't be seen as a solution, but a tool to use until your dog learns to heel properly.

I tried Halti products (face/head halters), but they made my dog lose all personality and spend her time face-diving into the ground to try to get them off. I'd rather she enjoyed walks, and the easy walk harness doesn't bother her at all. There are a bunch of different brands of them out there.

Kind of dog? How old?

u/Ristarwen · 2 pointsr/pics

I fostered a chihuahua for about a month, and since I worked at a vet clinic he came in to work with me every day. I got him just a normal harness and a seatbelt attachment. It's just a loop that goes around the buckled belt, with a strap and a clip to clip to the dog's harness. You can put a little dog bed on the seat for her, if you like, but the important thing is to have her secured. It's safer for both of you in the event of a crash, and keeps her from becoming a distraction during the ride. In some states (NJ) there's a law to secure pets in the car - you can be heavily fined.

Edit: I used something like this.

u/neilalicious · 1 pointr/germanshepherds

Not OP But I have the OneTigris and it fits perfect, doesn't leave any rashes or anything for long durations/hikes. It's designed so you can add any MOLLE standard equipment to it including pouches. Just go to your local military surplus store and you can get anything you need to add. The nice thing about that is if we're not hiking it's a good harness and if we're hiking I can load him down.

I'm not sure what your budget is, but we have a Ruffwear harness that has clips on the front and the back. It's been super helpful, and it's padded so if he does pull, it's not digging into him and hurting him.

u/borntoperform · 1 pointr/dogs

Here's a solid harness that has a top and bottom leash attachment: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01M6YASY1/ My dog would fit a medium.

u/Theopocalypse · 1 pointr/puppy101

Get a harness with a chest loop. Pup won't choke itself and when it pulls will be spun back around to you. One of the best purchases I've made. I'd get an adjustable 15 to 20 foot leash for free walking as well as a 6 foot for quick trips out to potty and for training purposes. https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B01M6YASY1?psc=1&ref=ppx_pop_mob_b_pd_title

I like it. Currently have the large, fits snug, reflective, has a handle and two leash connect points.

u/ksbsnowowl · 1 pointr/Hounds

> We can clip the leash to the front of the harness and this helps her from pulling.

Yeah, front-clip harnesses are the only thing that has muted my Plott's desire to pull as hard as she can. Wish we had known about the harness you linked when we ordered one for our girl. I'll definitely keep it in mind for a replacement in a few years.

u/joshlymanismygod · 1 pointr/dogs

There are basically two types of harness styles I've found: strapy ones (like this) and more vest-y ones (like this]. My dog hates the strapy ones, and will scratch/itch at it and try to pull it off, so if your dog is really not a fan of their harness, try the other type - it could help.

I use the Canine Equipment no-pull harness, and it puts pressure on her shoulder area as opposed to her neck when she pulls. Its been a really great harness for her, and is similar enough to the vest-y type that it doesn't bother her.

u/Franks2000inchTV · 1 pointr/nonononoyes

I have a seatbelt for my dog on long trips, or any time we're going on the highway:

u/busterhound · 1 pointr/dogs

I use a Halti connected to a front clip harness, no collar. Below are the ones I have but I'm sure there are cheaper options. I tried a choke collar once because my husband pressured me and it was horrible.

If he's pulling, stop where you are and only continue once he lets the leash go loose. It takes a lot of patience but he'll learn that pulling means he doesn't get to go anywhere. With the halti/ gentle leader, he won't be able to pull very hard anyway.

u/atlantisgate · 1 pointr/dogs

Honestly, you aren't going to find any crash tested restraint options that are safe for a dog riding in the front seat - that's just a really unsafe option.

Your best bet is a crate on the floor of the backseat or in the trunk if your backseat opens to the back. If you must then something like this is better than nothing, but you need to make sure the airbag is disabled/off for the passenger seat.

u/jocularamity · 1 pointr/Dogtraining

Agree with notochord that you should retrain her to walk with you using your new equipment.

If you want to try a harness, make sure it's one where the leash attaches in front of the dog's chest, not on her back. If the leash attaches on her back then it will let her pull even more, like a sled dog. If the leash attaches on her chest, it removes some of her pulling power and lets you steer her easily.

Freedom Harness and Sense-ible Harness are both good, if you want to go the harness route.

u/waig · 1 pointr/Survival

I like this style of harness as it's great for when our peke pulls. It also won't choke him and make him gag. We've used this style for my last peke and pom as well. Even converted my mom's pom to one as she is a massive puller.

u/chortlesandgiggles · 1 pointr/AskWomen

I got this one for small dogs. It works really well to stop pulling with the front clip.

u/tommynowheels · 1 pointr/dogs

I would definitely echo what the others have said. Negative reinforcement training is too high risk.

Here are some of the positive reinforcement tips I've been taught :

The first thing I would suggest trying is walking with some super smelly treats in your hand, and presenting them to your dog when you start the walk to let them know your hand is where their focus should be.

If other dogs are still causing too much of a distraction the only thing I've found to work is to either stop the walk and try and have your dog stay by your side until he realizes he's not going to get anywhere by barking, praising him the second that he stops barking and pulling.

Another method is to turn and walk further from the other dog whenever he is barking, showing him he's getting further from what he wants by behaving that way. But this could be hard to do if he's pulling hard.

A personal suggestion would be this cool harness I've just started using that let's you pull from the front and back without putting as much strain on the dog as other styles (2 Hounds Design Freedom No-Pull No Leash Harness Only, 1-Inch, Large, Black https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B0085XOVLS/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_VTaBDbDH9JW37)

u/SaltyBabe · 1 pointr/aww

These work pretty well for dogs who like to slip out of their leads/collars/harness. If they're a hyper aggressive puller with no regard for discomfort I wouldn't suggest it, but that's really a training issue not an issue with your gear. I was a foster dog Mom for nearly ten years and had to introduce many dogs to leads and a lot of them strongly dislike it and slip out when backing up or rolling but this works pretty well.

Ruffwear Front Range Harness
It’s a Ruffwear Front Range Harness (Small) - $39. No handle on it, but because these guys are not large, not really necessary, as you can easily just grab the harness itself if you need to. Very easy to put on and off as you just slide it over the head and then snap/clip around the body - if it takes more than 4-5 seconds to put on you’re taking your time.
