Buy a region free dvd player and lend it out with the dvds. http://www.amazon.com/Orei-DVD-Z1H-1080p-Region-Player/dp/B004ZHE9AG

You can rip the DVDs with software, but if they are dual layer, you will need a dual layer burner and disks in order to burn them without cutting out content or lowering quality.

What year are you living in? You can play Blu-Rays on both current gen consoles, and the PS3, and on separate Blu-Ray players from at least 25 different brands, for as low as £30 on Amazon, with free P&P (or far cheaper, if you look for something used). Blu-Rays can store vast amounts more data than DVDs, and at far higher bitrates, allowing them to play 2d or 3d video at full 1080p resolution, and on certain equipment at up to 4k UHD with HDR color. Even as a casual viewer, on a modern HDTV, you should be able to instantly tell the difference. As for them being "just a fad," they have been the dominant physical medium for home video for around 10 years now. Granted, you wouldn't see any benefit from the added resolution and bitrate on any of the older Doctor Who episodes, basically up until series 5 of the new show, so if that's all you want to watch or own physically, Blu-Ray is perfectly adequate for your use case. And of course, if you do watch other content, but you don't notice enough of a difference between the two to justify the added cost of a new player and more expensive discs, then by all means, save your money, I'm glad you're happy. But to go around saying Blu-Ray is "just a fad" that "only plays on like two machines" makes you seem ill informed and pretentious, and is simply incorrect.

So let me get this straight.
Let's say I want to do what you suggested. I go ahead and buy the box set, which is $82. Let's say I don't own a TV or DVD player (you'd be surprised how many people don't). That's another $24.99 for the DVD player and another $150 for the TV. That's great, but that still doesn't let me watch it on a tablet or phone. For that I would need a computer, but not just any computer, one with a CD-ROM (computers don't have them anymore) or let's just say an external DVD drive, which would be around $25.

OK, now we have our digital copies. The problem is, unless you have a phone with a LOT of space, you can't have all 6 seasons on your phone. You're gonna need to store them somewhere in the cloud, and I won't get into pricing for storage. All of this just so that I can watch it on my phone on the way to work.

Or I could just spend 50 bucks for now.

Simple.tv is a brand new option with lots of potential (but still somewhat buggy).

The Magnavox MDR537H 1 TB DVD Recorder/HDD with Digital Tuner (http://www.amazon.com/Magnavox-MDR537H-Recorder-Digital-Tuner/dp/B009I5KWLK) is a complex DVR designed around 7 years ago to straddle both the old analog signals and new digital ones, and is like a video Swiss Army Knife. It's probably nowhere near as easy to use as a Simple.tv, but may also do more.

There's a Boxee TV cloud dvr which might do this-- but it only works in very limited areas.

You can also build a custom PC dedicated to do all sorts of DVR style tasks, and lots more (and sit by itself in a closet somewhere).

One huge problem with DVRs is most require a monthly subscription to enable even the most basic recording options. However, all the alternatives listed above offer ways around that, for maybe as little as $0 a month.

Personal advice: Check out region free dvd players. Then you can keep all of your dvds and will be able to get new US dvds and play both. Here's a very highly reviewed one for $75 (55.50 pounds). A bit pricey, but probably cheaper than replacing all your dvds.

Without actually being there and prodding it myself, it's impossible for me to tell you what needs to be done. I don't know that anyone here will be able to help.

You'll have to manipulate it around and look for any broken/misaligned parts yourself.

If this isn't something you feel comfortable with, you can simply buy a new Sony DVD player for $28 from Amazon.

If any parts are broken, it won't be worth repair.

You get used to it. The only time it is an issue anymore is when someone gets in my car that has a car where the giant center knob IS the volume like the Honda Fit.
There are a couple Chinese manufacturers making Mazda 3 specific touch screens that get sold under several different names. The Eonon line seems popular. Make sure you get one that retains the steering wheel controls.

My Magnavox dvr recently died after 8 years but it performed like a champ until the end. ETA: mine didn't have any sort of guide and only had one tuner/no networking. Still, it worked great and was easy to use.

I am using this exact same screen but was lucky enough to get access to a mill and machined a aluminum enclosure to do exactly what you have here. My suggestion is grab a small board amplifier from amazon and some mini magnetic speakers.

I usually buy this one:
https://www.amazon.com/DROK-090155-Dual-channel-Amplifiers-Potentiometer/dp/B01ER1X450/ref=sr_1_12?ie=UTF8&qid=1479833185&sr=8-12&keywords=board+amplifier

And small speakers:

EDIT: As someone mentioned below, pickup a small USB audio card for $5 on amazon as well. It will sound so much better.

DVD's. I buy the Region 2 (Europe) "Complete Series" sets because they come with around 50 episodes rather than the standard 12-13 found in the North American DVD Sets. You can buy them on ebay or amazon.co.uk even if your not from Europe. You will need a Region free DVD player though. Here's the 4th set with episodes 154-192.

I bought this one a year or two ago:

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00TAD0IKA/

u/sharkamino · 1 pointr/BudgetAudiophile

CD/DVD with RCA out: Sony $33, LG $40, Sony $40. Panasonic $52.

CD only, over budget, Onkyo 6 disc $80 or single $100.

You can get a stand alone Region DVD Player for a few bucks.

Example given (but i dont own it so i dont know how good he is):
http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-DVD-E360K-Region-Player-Karaoke/dp/B008PB8XN2/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1450367955&sr=8-1&keywords=dvd+player+region+free

Edit:
The console is only Region free when it Comes to games (BC) and digital games if you Switch the Region and go to another market. But it is Region locked for movies afaik unless that changed in the last 2 years.

I'd be all for a shuffle, but I already bought some cc51's on Cyber Monday so changing tracks with the cord is out of question.

If you are looking for something cheap...I haven't found it yet. To be honest, I'd advise against cheap and go more robust and versatile.

Like me...I saved 10 bucks to get ATSC tuners only. Which are useless now that I have the option to record QAM.

If you're looking to simulate the experience of a cable company style guide we recommand the Forumler Z7+ or Formuler Z8. They are on the higher end in terms of price and stability. As well as their app being far suppier to anything else out there.

Msg me for a trial of our service when you get your box, I'd be pleased to help in any way I could!
