I've been using the wall pocket calculator holder all year and I love it.
It was a fight at first. I'd tell them the number was on their desk, there phone went in the pocket. Then I'd take role based on which phones were in their pockets (I do this on a seating chart projected on the smart board). It was a time-consuming annoyance for the first couple of weeks. "Tim, no phone today?" "Oh, I forgot..." Or they'd lie and say they didn't have it. Then later I'd see them with it and have to write a referral and confiscate the phone.

My admin was supportive. That first month I wrote a lot of referrals. I even had to write a referral for a kid who put in an empty case. Idiot. But by now, they just put their phones up and we move on with life without their sirens call.

I also will structure the day's schedule with clear marking for times when they CAN have their phones⎯like at the beginning when they're supposed to be doing a journal, or to listen to music while writing, or at the end of class when they're supposed to be reading. It's clearly labelled as available phone time which seems to make them better accept the phone-less times.

Search for world map posters (on amazon or so) and then get a nice frame (depending on the map the frame will be more expensive). The standard poster size is 61cm x 91.5cm.

This is a good example (Amazon US, you can see a bit more on the customer pictures). 10-15$ seems to be what most posters (and I assume) of those dimensions and quality cost.

Or if you are willing to spend a bit more for something a bit nicer and possibly bigger then you might wanna look into National Geographic's World Maps although I have honestly just assume those are nicer, NG is known for their great maps but I its also owned by 21st Century Fox/Murdoch, so no clue if quality is still what it used to be.

Maybe some of these wood pattern blocks. You could add some light spray paint that doesn't completely cover the color to make them look worn. And with 250 pieces, imagine dumping a pile on the table as you describe the loot!

I do have way too much time on my hands since going part-time at my job and know that I still would never put that much effort into a bullet journal. I love looking at other people's though--so many creative and beautiful entries.

For me, planners like this and this or this serve the best purpose.

I use this. It's easy to hang and is the perfect size for a small crop.

For the eyeliners, or even smaller brushss, have you tried those blocky pencil grips? They're pretty angular and you can put more than one on if you need more grip space. I don't know how difficult they would be to put on initially, though.

Edit: Revlon also has a new-ish mascara line in a bottle similar to the Revolution lip glosses. Here's a random blog post I found going over the formulas.

Zap will still forever be in my heart as the game that got me interested in Electrical Engineering. At least, I think it was called zap, I sadly can't find it via google or youtube or anything, which isn't too uprising considering I played it many years ago (2001ish?)

Edit: Found it! http://www.amazon.com/Edmark-llthisczaj-Thinkin-Science-ZAP/dp/B0007XWBBQ

It's a good idea to focus on yourself and make lists everyday of things that you want to accomplish to get yourself where you need to be. I'm 30 now, and this is my first year using a planner--I highly recommend it. I was terrible and planning anything ahead of time, and so I didn't get a whole lot done. Now, I'll add things that I want to do for the week on Sundays, and then also add extra things for the next day each evening. It has really helped me get my shit in order, and is just another way of imposing discipline and living a more deliberate life.

Do it for yourself, not to get her back--that ship has sailed. Don't be too hard on yourself for relapsing; break ups are extremely stressful.

u/Cresh07 · 3 pointsr/tipofmytongue

Thinking Science - Zap? Sorry I can't find a better link, I'm on my cell.

Anyways, I remember the light section focused on lasers mirroes and color filters. The electricity section had you making circuits that allowd you to power fans and lights and stuff, plus you could "see" the electricity flowing through the wires.

I want to day that you were "hatching" animals in the sounf section, but that is the section that I have the least recollection of.

Hope this helps.

Edit: I'm so excited tgat some one else might know this game that I continued searching and found some images

Architects and engineers commonly use scales like this one.

Plans drawn at 3/4" scale means that 3/4" on the paper equals 1' in real life. So, on the ruler, every 3/4" is marked incrementally, indicating the number of feet the measurement is.

I love these little sensory ring things. They are inconspicuous enough that I can play with them in a meeting or church without looking weird. I still have the urge to pick but I can kind of redirect here, helps take the edge off https://www.amazon.com/dp/B06XKD9WCK/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_awdb_t1_LyaRCb5DTA3J0

The device on the right here is a parallel ruler. The idea is it slides perpendicular to the lines you draw, so that you can draw parallel lines. Like this.

I have a world map that I bought at Walmart wayyy back. Looks great. Has all the large and fair sized cities on it and an old fashioned "weathered" colour to it. Very closely related to this one.

Get something likethis and make them turn their phones off and put them in this rack when they enter your classroom. I confiscate my kids' phones and give them back every day.

Your kid will grow up into a world of typing most things by the 5th grade. It's not a bad thing, i've been in the same situation since kindergarten. I would say improve by getting college ruled paper and teaching him about spacing his letters and basically have him write out the alphabet and coach him on correctly placing the characters on the line to improve neatness. My first grade teacher gave me one of these and it improved me
a bit http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00FQQRRIQ/ref=pd_aw_sims_1?pi=SS115

My Grandfather has awful adhd and doesn't really write at all. My dad has really bad adhd and writes basically sideways, he happened to be a silicon valley business man so typing devices have been available to him his whole life. I also have adhd as well. At a young age i found a special interest in computers because i could type faster than other students and it was rewarding because with my handwriting, keyboards were essential. Here I am a senior in high school who has worse handwriting than a 4th grader. I was given a packet to fill out to present to my schools college counselor for a meeting regarding letters of recommendation for private colleges. I tried my hardest and wrote about one character per a second (probably slower) and still handed in a messy document. If it becomes a problem never give up because some that would not be fun to run into the same problems as i do.

I use multicharger blocks, one of these and some long usb cables. Works well for me.

Gotta make sure to buy phones with charger ports on the bottom but that's not usually a problem.

Get the molymod one. Easy to use, robust. I got mine second hand 15 years ago and it is still going strong. Haven't checked for best price, but here is an Amazon link to get you started.

I use an architects ruler like this. It lets me "scale" my drawings and work out dimensions. But I don't go full blown "drafting"... There are youtube videos on how to use them.

u/Cawendaw · 1 pointr/Calligraphy

This is... really good for a second day doing calligraphy. Actually, it's pretty damn good for a second month doing calligraphy. Stop making the rest of us look bad by comparison, you talented jerk! >:( Ok, but you wanted tips on how to improve. So...

**

It's good that you're using a nib ladder, but it looks like you aren't using guidelines? Either that, you're using guidelines that are misaligned. One of these two things is causing irregular letter heights, and for each line of letters to sag downwards as it goes to the right.

Either way, it's an easy fix: when you make a nib ladder, align a straightedge to the bottom and draw a line to the opposite end of the page (a lot of people on here use a T-square or a rolling ruler; I usually just use another piece of paper because it's easier to tell if it's really perpendicular and also I am a cheapskate). Then do the same thing to the top of the nib ladder. If you want, you can also make a nib ladder on the opposite end of the page to check if the lines are really parallel. Do this for a whole page of lines.

When you've done this once, you can use that piece of paper to rule future practice papers: just make tick marks at the places the guidelines begin/end and use a straightedge to draw between them.

*

Other than that, it looks really good, especially for the second day! You have all the letterforms down, your strokes are confident, and you're keeping the nib at a consistent angle. I'm especially impressed with C, O, Q, and G—it was months before my circles were that even. some days they still arent! If not for your title, I'd have guessed you were at least 3 weeks along.
Bravo!*

>The letters S, X, and Z

Saaaaaaame :( I'd suggest studying the geometry of those letters. X and Z are basically diagonals drawn across a rectangle. Figure out the proportions of that rectangle (
x units wide by y units tall) and try to internalize them. Try drawing a bunch said rectangles and filling them with X's and Z's. Then have that in mind while writing them. It looks like you might already be doing this, since they're underlined? If so, ignore this entire paragraph except the last sentence. If not, I found this pdf to be mildly helpful, although not as helpful as I thought it would be when I first found it, if that makes sense. I'm afraid it's mostly going to come down to practice.

S is like that, but more complicated. There's guides out there that have it as circles inside of circles, or inside a half-square, but I could never keep it all in my head. So far, I don't have a better answer than "practice, compare with examplar, practice some more." There's some pretty awesome people in this sub, though, so maybe one of them will have better advice.

One final note that has nothing to do with calligraphy:

  • if you want to make a bulleted list

  • put a hyphen followed by a space, and it will turn into a bullet and become indented.

  • remember to double-tap enter after ending each line, otherwise reddit markup will ignore it.

  • also, always remember to flair your post! On desktop, there should be a little dropdown menu that allows you to do this. On mobile, it depends on your app. If you can't figure it out just type out the name of the flair you want in brackets inside the title, and it will be added automatically (it's too late to do that for this post, but you can do it for the next one). In this case, it would be [CC] or [Constructive Criticism].

What about getting those little variety smiley-face sticker packs? Put a matching pair of stickers on the end of each child's shoe (one kid gets 2 red, another purple, a third gets stars or whatever, etc.). Then when you pull out their shoes, even if they are similar they can work on matching the stickers.

I feel your pain. I normally just wear a baseball cap but I guess that won't play in some offices. Perhaps you could ask for a glare shade to be fitted above your desk?

Jesus, these people are fucking demoralizing.

If you're a chemistry major, then you are probably smart, you probably like the subject, and did pretty well in Gen Chem. The biggest problem with OChem is that there are so many different mechanism. Dozens of different types of reactions, with different catalysts, producing different products, with a variety of structural characteristics. You'll need to learn all the different structures of the reactants, products, intermediates, and track every single atom as it transitions through every step. It seems impossible to remember it all, which is why people hate it.

But you don't need to learn everything all at once. OChem, if nothing else, is the one class that teaches students how to properly study (and that it's impossible to learn all the material the night before the test).

Here is my advice:

Go to every single class. Take notes by hand (putting away the phone). Review said notes from the previous day for 30 minutes before bed. Do all the homework. Review said notes from the previous week for a couple hours each the weekend.

If you do those things, you will have learned the material five separate times before you even study for the exam for real. Once by hearing the prof, once by writing it down in your notebook, once by reviewing your notes later that night, once in the homework, and once in a weekly review. And if any of the material does not make sense after your weekend review session, go to the professor's office hours and ask.

If you do those things, in OChem and PChem, I guarantee you will do well in the class.

(Source: Got an A and a B+ in OChem, an A and a B in PChem)

P.S. A molecular modelling kit can also be a very useful tool for visualizing organic structures and understanding the reactions.
