Ok, Wikipedia says that

According to wikipedia, the boston school distict has 57,230 students. According to wikipedia, boston is 124 km2.
I picked a random blender with a 40 fl oz cup. (amazon).
According to a reddit map, it takes over 60cm of snow for school to be cancelled in the boston area.

normal blender = 40 oz - maybe half of that when full? = 20z = 591.470592 cm3

snow height = more than 60cm

124 km2 = 1,240,000,000,000 square centimeters
1,240,000,000,000 cm2 (60cm2) = 7.44e13 cm3
7.44e13 cm3 snow needed / 591.470592 cm3 = 125788164291 blender loads

125788164291 blender loads/57,230 students = 2197941.01505 loads/student (at least)

wow. that seems like a lot- I might have done something wrong...

edit: as rrnate pointed out, the map actually doesn't how 60+cm- it shows 30 cm. Oops!
So it would be

1,240,000,000,000 cm2 (30cm2) = 3.72e13 cm3
3.72e13 cm3/591.470592 cm3 = 6.28941e10 blender loads
6.28941e10/57230 = 1,098,970.50753 loads/student

thanks for catching that!

Holy crap it takes them $235 to make a single unit? That's surprising considering it's primarily plastic [injection mold] with some off-the-shelf electronics.

Edit: I wondered how much each major part of the Coolest Cooler would cost if I purchased each component individually:

Let's start at the beginning. How do you cook the rice and the beans? We fix a big pot full of rice and beans (okay, it's actually two pots) every week or two and this is how we do it.

First the rice. You can add a lot of flavor to the rice by cooking it with stock. It's easy to make your own stock. Throw a big onion (quartered), some celery, some carrots, and some rosemary (or other herbs you like) in a pot of water and let it simmer for a few hours. If you eat meat you can throw in a soup bone or some leftover chicken bones. Then mix this stock half and half with water when you boil your rice. When we cook rice Mexican style we also toss some oil in the pan and fry up some onions first then fry the rice a bit before adding the liquids. It's subtle, but I think it adds a bit more depth to the flavor of the rice.

For the beans, start by soaking them in plain water for at least 8 hours before boiling. And change the soak water every couple of hours. The more changes the better. You do this because it dissolves and removes the indigestible sugars that cause gas. And no matter how good beans are for your heart, this makes you easier to be around. When you are ready to boil the beans, cut up an onion and some garlic and throw that in the water too. If you can get epazote throw some of that in there. It really adds something to the flavor. I like a half and half mix of black beans and pinto beans. My wife likes to add garbanzos, but I think they ruin the flavor. We then throw the beans and onions with some of the water in a blender and make frijoles refritos. If you can get Mexican oregano throw some of that in too. It adds a lot of flavor. And lastly you need to add salt when frying the beans. Enough salt really makes the difference between disgusting and delicious.

Okay, now you have great tasting beans and rice. You can eat them plain. They really are delicious. But I usually like a hot sauce to spice them up a bit. I just ran out so I made a new one today. I started with about a quarter cup of home grown, dried, crushed cayenne peppers. I added a few cloves of garlic, a couple chipotle peppers a friend gave me, some salt, and covered it all with vinegar. Then I put that in the blender and let it blend for a while. It really kicks it up a notch. It's a lot cheaper and, in my opinion, better to make your own salsa, but you can use Siracha or whatever you have. You can also put some cheddar cheese on top of your beans. That's always nice.

Good luck and bon appetit.

Edit: By the way, did you know that you can screw the blades and collar from a standard sized blender (like an Oster) onto a mason jar or other standard threaded salsa jar or spaghetti sauce jar? You can then turn the jar over and stick it on the blender to make your hot sauce without having to clean the carafe. Great time saver.

Woah my Dudes ! 3 HP. That's the peak power of a Blender you got there. Be careful with all that road shredding lunacy !

These are immersion blenders. I'm a fan of this one because the buttons are on the top which makes them easier for me to use with my thumb.

I will absolutely ship you one. Well, not entirely. I will absolutely get Amazon to ship you one just like I have. :D You can PM me your info or... make an Amazon wishlist and PM me your wishlist (that way I won't see your address. You just never know about me.)

ETA: More descriptive immersion blenderness - It's a blender you just stick in the pot. Like, for your pea soup: cook it all up, turn off the heat, stick the immersion blender in, turn it on, and swirl it like you're stirring with a spoon. It'll blend up everything into a nice smooth soup. My favorite use is with boiled cauliflower: I boil it, drain it, add sour cream, chives, cheese, cream, salt and pepper, then immersion blend. When I'm done, I can serve my fauxtatoes right out of the pan into bowls.

Immersion blenders: Stick It In! (I entertain me)

The one I've got I've had for about a year and is actually $16. I probably wouldn't trust it to blend ice, but I've done a few broccoli cheddar soups and saag paneers that were really thick and it stands up nicely. The whisk attachment whips up hwc nicely too. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B018ELIYA4/

This was recommended by Serious Eats and I have it, it’s very powerful and easy to clean.

u/kuppajava · 6 pointsr/soylent

What you are describing is 2 bags every 3 days, so 20 bags a month. Start out with a one time purchase of 7 bags (28 meals) and try it out, you may not like it right away, so eat it for a week. If you don't like it, you can easily sell the remaining bags for what you paid for them and just walk away. If you like it and still want to do like you describe, go with the 21 bag subscription which they call 84 meals.

If you do like it, buy this and one of these to make your life a million times easier and to make the Soylent taste better IMO.

Remember that once you mix up a bag of it, you have 3 days to finish it if it is refrigerated. I would also suggest getting a couple of 1 liter blender bottles, but that is not necessary just more convenient.

It is mashed Cauliflower. I boil a head of cauliflower. Drain it, add butter, salt, pepper and garlic powered to the whole thing and use this. Sometimes I boil some garlic cloves with the cauliflower.

Cuisinart Food Processor for $180

Blendtec total blender classic for $400

* edit - it isn't amazon, but Fry's also has a 7/11 sale and has the Zojirushi Micom Rice Cooker & Warmer for $90 (after a promo code you get if you sign up on their website). I hear this is the best rice cooker out there.

The /r/gainit diet style, suited for skinny guys wanting to bulk up, would work just fine for you.

They have plenty of good advice on taking in more healthy calories. The only difference is that you might not need as many calories as a weight lifter, but that shouldn't be a problem for you because you're struggling to take in calories anyway.

I'm a skinny guy too. The best quick and dirty tip I have is drink more whole milk. That's a big, fairly healthy calorie bomb that has a good mix of nutrients. What I do is I throw a banana, some blueberries and some peanut butter and some whole milk into a cheap Oster blender. It tastes like a dessert, is easy to make and is totally healthy.

If you supplement your meals with the occasional shake, you can gain weight pretty easily.

I also periodically snack on unsalted peanuts. I've gone from 155 to 175 recently.

u/cmagnuson · 5 pointsr/soylent
  1. I definitely think so. I'm not a big fan of Soylent at room temperature. I prefer mine to be nice and cold. I even freeze the glass I use before pouring myself a meal.

  2. I haven't noticed a difference in taste between fresh and couple day old Soylent. The directions advise you to consume each batch within 48 hours of making it but I've pushed that number to 3-4 days without the taste or smell changing on me.

  3. Yes, I highly recommend purchasing a hand blender like this one. The difference between blended and shaken Soylent is absolutely huge.

Shaken Soylent is much, much grittier and doesn't taste as smooth. Blended Soylent is much more like a thick cream and has very little grit to it.

Plus, blended Soylent doesn't separate as much as shaken Soylent. When I finish a pitcher I'll go ahead and make another one so that it's cold for my next meal. I noticed that when I came back for my next meal, shaken Soylent will have separated into a big layer of water and oil at the top of the pitcher while the blended Soylent has a very thin layer of water and oil. This separation had a noticeable effect on the taste.

If you're going to be consuming Soylent with any kind of regularity I would definitely recommend purchasing a hand blender.

I highly recommend one of those multifunction stick blenders. I actually bought this cheap one. The food processor attachment does its job and the whisk comes in handy. The immersion attachment is awesome for soups, smoothies, and sauces.

I own an Oster Beehive blender that I've been happy with for the past 4 years. I call it the man-blender due to its single industrial toggle switch. On, off, and medium pulse are all I need.

Glass jar is nice, steel square peg interface between blade and motor instead of the finicky hard rubber pinwheel type things that many blenders use. Doesn't leak, and replacement parts can be had for cheap online. My only caveat is that the plastic screw-on base cap has cracks forming, but still works fine. Thicker and more durable base caps are <$5 on ebay should I ever need to replace it.

As with almost anything, other people have had some issues with it, so you should definitely check out the reviews on Amazon

Vitamix, Blendtec, and Breville Hemisphere. The last one is best in value by Cooks Illustrated and is under $200.

I mostly mix whey isolate with water. Milk here and there, and sometimes with oatmeal (mix unflavored protein with flavored oatmeal or flavored protein with unflavored oatmeal).

I use a Promixx 2.0 to mix them... and it is awesome. I was very unsure about it. I was kinda like "oh, that would be good... but it seems so unnecessary... just use a damn shaker bottle". I guilt-ed myself out of buying it several times. Then I got a $25 gift card from somewhere, so I bought one. And I'm telling you that if I dropped it today and shattered it, i would go home and order another immediately.

https://www.amazon.com/PROMiXX-2-0-Technology-Lithium-ion-Rechargeable/dp/B010C4I5FU

well fuck... they're like $50 now. I got mine for $30. I'm glad because I never would have bought it for $50. That said... I stand by what I said. If dropped mine today or it was stolen or something, I'd buy another one. There are knockoffs for less.

I put protein, pre workout, etc. in stackable containers made for baby formula powder. They work great and even have a top piece that makes pouring them out easy.

So I'm not sure how popular it is, but I received the Ninja Mega kitchen system for Christmas a few years ago. It has a blender, processor, and two smoothies cup attachments, as well as a dough hook.

We really enjoy it. I drink a lot of smoothies in the summer and make salsa frequently, so it gets plenty of use from me.

The large blender is great at pulverizing ice for margaritas!

This is, unfortunately, the case. After shopping around myself for a <$100 blender I went with a good Oster.

That was nice enough and did the job, for a while at least, but it gave out after less than two years. I then saved up and got a commercial-grade BlendTec and holy crap, it's a beast. It takes seconds to liquefy a pile of frozen goods, even turning all the strawberry seeds to powder. I make really good soups with it now, too. Cheap, easy, and I eat half now, freeze the other half for later.

Totally worth it.

Oster My Blend

I had the same problem but knew that there must be cheaper options than Vitamix or Blendtec - and I found it! The wattage is mostly what matters.

This baby blends like a dream - no more ice chunks to chew through](ttp://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00JFLVMNE/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o08_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1) I tried cheaper, lower-wattage models of Ninja and they didn't work. This thing is so great it can even make powder out of whole flax seeds.

u/ramplepampkins · 2 pointsr/fitmeals

If you want single or double serve smoothies my ninja has not let me down. Sure you can spend a lot more on a vitamix and it will be better; but that's up to you.

I have this one: https://www.amazon.com/Nutri-Ninja-Auto-iQ-Blender-BL482/dp/B00NGV3X2W/ref=sr_1_7?s=home-garden&ie=UTF8&qid=1518667488&sr=1-7&keywords=ninja+blender&dpID=51zfGBpSyAL&preST=_SY300_QL70_&dpSrc=srch

and got it on sale for 50 bucks at target. I make at least 5 smoothies a week and have 0 complaints about this product. I owned a bullet in the past and this one is much better.

For 5 smoothies a day this one is way more then enough in my opinion.

It's not a blender, it's an Osterizer.

u/cer20 · 2 pointsr/BuyItForLife

I have had luck with the 1000 watt Ninja NJ600 I looked at a ton of reviews before buying it and the consensus was it was not quite the blending capability of the Vitamix and Blendtec but $200+ cheaper.

u/Ratlettuce · 2 pointsr/BuyItForLife

While not completely indestrucable i guess. This thing (Blendtec) is a jack of all trades and is a freaking TANK of a blender. Anything from soups, ice creams, powdered sugar, coffee etc.

Blades arent sharp, they are just POWERFUL, so no cutting yourself or sharpening. Blends like i never thought possible. Money well spent. Got ours at costco.

u/dreiter · 2 pointsr/veganfitness

I got my mom the Oster Versa a few years ago (it was on sale for $150). It does everything my Vitamix does but at a much cheaper price (and obviously a worse warranty).

The Nutribullet is cheap and works well for people, but it's too new to really know about durability. Probably not great, but for a machine that is $60 on sale, you can't complain too much.

I would use recipe for a frappe (milkshake with ice cream). It's incredibly tasty. Magic ingredient would be the right syrup. You want something like this, which can be found at littlerhodyfoods.com, or ask your local creamery. I use one of those upside-down blenders, like this. I prefer mine plenty lumpy as opposed to totally smooth.

Ingredients

  • ½ cup cold whole milk (about 4 ounces)

  • ¼ cup strawberry-flavored syrup (not like Hershey's, but ask at your local creamery) (about 2 ounces)

  • 8 medium scoops strawberry ice cream (about 1 quart/24 ounces), softened until just melty at the edges

    Directions

Place the milk and syrup in a blender and blend to mix thoroughly, about 10 seconds. Add the ice cream and pulse several times to begin breaking it up. With the blender motor off, use a flexible spatula to mash the mixture down onto the blender blade (or into the blender compartment). Continue pulsing, stopping, and mashing until the mixture is well blended, thick, and moves easily in the blender jar, roughly 30 to 90 seconds. Pour into a chilled glass or glasses, and serve at once.
u/bootysmashfittynine · 2 pointsr/food

Ah, sorry to hear that man =( hope you find some things that work well for you.

I would definitely go for soups, get yourself an immersion blender. This is the one I have, I did a lot of research because I use mine so much, and I think this one is a really good buy.

You can put practically anything in to a soup, even chicken or beef, and grind it up. If you don't strain the soup the texture isn't the most pleasant thing in the world, but at least you get flavor and when you're jaw is fucked up that's better then nothing.

http://foodwishes.blogspot.com/

This guy ^ has a ton of good soup recipes, but you can find a recipe anywhere online for literally any vegetable and they are quite delicious. Even chilis and stews, just take the immersion blender and blend the fuck out of it. for most recipes, you can literally chuck everything in a pot, let it simmer for awhile, blend it, and you're good to go.

u/Sirius_Starr · 2 pointsr/soylent

They're anywhere from like, $15-100, depending on how good of one you want. Just depends on what you want to use it for. I do a lot of cooking (or did before my 'lent diet and will again afterwards), so I have this one, but it's essentially the nicest, strongest one out there. (I like to blend ice into my 'lents.)

This one is only like $27 and not horribly reviewed, though I have no personal experience with it. Like most things, you're going to get what you pay for in general, with greater power/reliability, but if you're just using it to get 'lent into solution, you don't need that much power.

700W motor for $27 or so. Probably the most power you're gonna get on a budget. Any thing in the kilowatt range seems to be in the Benjamin price range.

Either that or hit up Craigslist, but I'd be extremely wary of used blenders.

Honestly? I got something for around $40 at costco (this one I think http://www.amazon.com/Cuisinart-HB-155PC-Blender-Blending-Attachments/dp/B00DOK0R2O/ref=lp_289916_1_5?s=kitchen&ie=UTF8&qid=1412661542&sr=1-5) and it does everything I want an immersion blender to do. Perhaps more of a duration thing is what I meant. It would take me about a minute to clean the Vitamix. It takes me about 5 seconds to clean the Ninja (confirmed with the wife that it's this one).

Multiply that twice a day and that's a lot of inconvenience saved. The Vitamix is kind of overkill for a daily smoothie/protein shake/meal replacement anyway.. it's more of the tougher jobs like making soups.

I have an immersion blender on my wishlist because there is a really good recipe for butternut squash sweet potato slowcooker macaroni chili (Edit: I mixed up the recipes). that requires a blender and I don't have a blender.

Edit again: Ok. I'm all over the place. I think it was some kind of butternut squash pasta. The chili doesn't need a blender.

Alternatively, on my "fitness stuff" list I have something called a chalk ball. I go bouldering 3 times a week and if you don't know, chalk is used when climbing to help with friction or something like that... but anyways, it'll make it easier for me to bring chalk to the gym with me without the risk of spilling chalk everywhere.

I use a mixer cup to mix it all up. If I end up letting it sit for a few minutes after the first gulp, it's no big deal to mix it all together again. One benefit of this device is that there are absolutely no clumps.

Like you, I enjoy the Green Machine too!

u/romanticheart · 2 pointsr/xxfitness

That is a damn good question. I can look when I get home! He bought it years before we were together so I'm not sure. I know we are planning to upgrade to this one soon, so I imagine ours is either a lesser version or an older version of a similar thing. Last time he moved he lost the attachment for the small blender bottles and we want them back, which is why we are upgrading.

I recently bought this Oster blender/food processor combo. It's loud, but does a great job making oat flour, hummus, smoothies, etc.; the blender base detaches for easy cleaning under the blades (an awesome feature imo); and it's really affordable. They also sell a version with just the blender and that might that be enough for your uses, but I decided to splurge.

Reviewed April, 2013

youtube review

The old winner (the VitaMix 5200) cost $450 but are there any blenders out there now that can beat that one? All blenders were put through a variety of tasks from making hummus to crushing ice. Decibel levels were also part of the testing.

the WARING PRO failed at almost every task!! The Oster, Hamilton Beach, and Quisinart models all failed some of the tasks, actually struggling to make basic foods needed from a blender.

VitaMix 5200 ($450) was the winner again. If you are going to be doing a lot of heavy duty cooking, you might want to invest in one. The Breville Hemisphere Control Blender also performed very well and, at $200, is less than half the price of the Vitamix.

I think smoothies are a really great idea. A blender works, or an immersion blender like this one! Also, you should definitely check your local goodwill and craigslist - you can definitely find a working microwave for $10-$20, and that is definitely worth it if you can save a lot of time making oatmeal, reheating dinner, and heating breakfast things!

I was a Soylent convert too. I don't know if you ever just did Soylent 2.0 alone for any length of time, but I did for a couple weeks and I think it was a perfect transition for me to be introduced to Keto Chow. I think Keto Chow is totally delicious but at this stage eating is mostly utility and only partly luxury, if that makes sense. I haven't had any extravagant sweets for the last month so it might help my appreciation of it. My boyfriend also thinks it's delicious but he doesn't really like sweet things and he said he liked it because it's not overly sweet? Bottom line, it's possible you just have to adjust to it, flavor wise. Also, I make one serving at a time in a personal blender (not a blender bottle) and it's never clumpy and has always been a great consistency after a few hours in the fridge. I'd highly recommend that route. $20 on Amazon.

Personally my favorite flavors have been rich chocolate and cookies and cream, and I'd recommend cookies and cream even if you don't really like chocolate. It's a very unique flavor profile.

I don't know why, but I've never once had a negative reaction to the MCT oil. It's possible I felt my tummy grumbling the first day, but that was it. It's interesting how differently everyone's bodies respond. Hopefully you just need a slow introduction to it and it will be easier to digest later.

Def Magic Bullet. It's cheap and it's doesn't have the beefiest motor but it's compact and it just works. NINJA makes a similarly sized smoothie style blender also that my friend has had good luck with. Can't vouch for the longevity of that but my other Ninja blender is legit for the price. I've had my Magic Bullet for so many years and it keeps trucking and I blend frozen fruit almost daily so I'd go that route.

The folks at Modernist Cuisine discovered the sweetest of tricks, which is that the addition of sodium citrate to melted cheese stabilizes it and keeps it from re-hardening. This means that you can make a sauce or dip that has the consistency of alfredo or nacho cheese or Velveeta or cheese whiz, from any cheese including delicious high quality ones, and get a stable, creamy result that still maintains all the delicate nuance and strength of flavor of the good cheese you used to make it. You can also use a variant of this recipe to make American cheese style slices that melt easily but taste like, well, real, good cheese.

on Amazon:

sodium citrate, enough for a long time, $15 and free shipping

a digital scale that measures in hundredths of grams, $36.60, free shipping

immersion blender, $15.83 and free shipping.

This puts you at roughly $66. If you decide you want to throw a few more bucks into it, or he already has an immersion blender or something, get him some nice cheese to melt.

... If you wanted some non-food-related ideas, I love this product and have just been waiting for the right occasion to give this to someone.

The hand blender is much better. If you do the jar/thermos method, you just have to ensure you have a good lid.

This particular hand blender is the best for making BPC in my opinion. Other blade encasements cause the liquid to spin up the sides of the mug and make a complete mess. This particular one sucks down to the bottom of the mug and pulls the liquid down. Much cleaner. http://www.amazon.com/Hamilton-Beach-59770-Turbo-Twister-2-Speed/dp/B00008IH9S/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1404425361&sr=8-2&keywords=Hamilton+Beach+hand+blender

u/RealLifeNoRespawn · 1 pointr/coolguides

I use Frozen blueberries.

Frozen Blueberries, Banana's, Liquid of your choice, Vanilla and optionally a low calorie sweetener (or pinch of sugar) is a solid combination, imo.

That said, consistency largely depends on the quality of blender. I have a Ninja blender and EVERYTHING comes out the same consistency. I'll throw spinach in there and everything. It all comes out in 'smoothie' form. On the other hand, literally every other blender I've used does not do that. You really need to spring for a good and unfortunately pricey blender.

This is the one I have.

It's nice, but very loud. The quality is really high though. The cups are strong, thick and have the 'screw grooves' on the inside, which I'm now convinced is how everything should be. It's worth the price, imo. It actually blends everything I throw at it.

>I’m sick of feeling meh and low energy all the time due to my diet and sleep being screwed up! Plus my wife and I have our first baby on the way, so I REALLY have to get it together for me and the wife and kid!

So you'll typically get one of three types of babies:

  1. A sleeper (note: you'll have to manually wake them up to feed them, they need to eat constantly!)
  2. A regular kid who wakes up occasionally
  3. A non-sleeper

I consider sleep to be #1...the #1 natural steroid (up to 75% of your body's HGH is produced when you sleep!), the #1 "vitamin", the #1 source of energy, the #1 source of motivation...screw up your sleep & you're just hosed! Sleep deprivation is an actual form of torture (they even used it in Guantanamo!). So depending on your baby, you may have to implement an alternating sleep plan. If you use formula, great, if not, then get a pump & use bottles so that you can let your wife sleep every other night & so that you can sleep every other night. Stuff like postpartum depression is serious stuff due in a large part to long-term sleep deprivation, so it's really important to babysit your sleeping situation both for your sake & your wife's sake!

    >So I’ve created your meal prep system as a GTD project in Todoist and gotten started.

Awesome! 6-pack Fitness makes great bags! So you're setting up what I call a "KPR Stack":

  4. Reminder
  5. Procedure
  6. Kit

Whenever you have a recurring situation that you have to deal with, like eating better, you need a KPR Stack to help you Git Good. From an execution level, mine is pretty simple:

  7. Reminder: I have multiple alarms to remind me when to eat during the day. I just get busy & will space it sometimes. I eat smaller-sized meals & snacks throughout the day to keep my energy up (or something like Soylent or Sated, if I'm feeling lazy) & just have alarms buzz me to remind me to eat so that I don't go too long without eating & then get an energy dip.
  8. Procedure: Eat the food. That's it, lol. Note that this involves a support system for meal prep, but that's outside the scope of this post, haha.
  9. Kit: In this case, that's your lunchbox. So you have a nice, big, insulated, chilled system for carrying your food around all day.

So provided you handle your meal-prep for the day/week/month/whatever, then you can pack your lunchbox in the morning, set your alarms, and then easily be 100% successful every single day at (1) shoveling food into your body at regular intervals to keep your energy high & steady, and optionally (2) meet your macros for the day. I don't want to have to figure out my meals or my macros throughout the day, that's waaaaay too much work to do on a daily basis...I want everything already figured out & prepared ahead of time, so that I just have to execute the next-action, haha!

    >I’m going to get the freezer soon, and I’ve read up on a few models of sous vide devices. I love the Mellow, but can’t justify the expense right now.

I'm actually saving up for a second upright deep freezer right now (same model), as my first one has been (1) such a huge cost-savings for us (both from cooking more at home more often, and from being able to buy in bulk, at a discount), and (2) such a ridiculous convenience. I'm planning on basically using one for raw materials (ex. uncooked chicken breast, wings, steaks, burgers, etc.) and then one for partially-cooked or fully-cooked meals. For example, another redditor recently turned me onto these great trays called Souper Cubes:

    https://www.soupercubes.com/

I mean, just LOOK at that picture! SOUP BRICKS!! Genius! You can use them for so many things, too:

  • Soups
  • Stews
  • Chilis
  • Bisques
  • Broths
  • Stocks
  • Sauces
  • Baby food (homemade purees etc.)

On a tangent, if you don't already have one, you may want to pick up an immersion (stick) blender for your Instant Pot. It's like having a blender or food process that you can use directly in the pot, which is super useful for pureeing pressure-cooked foods, especially baby food! I use it for stuff like homemade applesauce, sweet potato bisque, etc. Here's a basic overview:

    https://allthenourishingthings.com/make-blended-soup-instant-pot/

Here's a good stick blender: (cook the food in the IP, take the lid off, stick the blender right in the pot!)

    https://www.amazon.com/Mueller-Ultra-Stick-Immersion-Multi-Purpose-Attachment/dp/B075X1KPLZ

Down the road, you can soften different veggies & then puree them into baby food if you'd like (those little Gerber containers are like a buck a pop for the same thing!), and then freeze them in a mold like this:

    https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00MYE40CO

I also use that mold for copycat Starbucks Egg bites, which you can make in your Instant Pot!

I would go with a Nutri Ninja Professional. It has a more powerful motor than the Nutribullet and has a better build quality, and it's $100 less so how could you go wrong?

Smoothies are really great for like a breakfast in the morning and you can add lots of greens and protein powder for a sort of pre-workout.

For a smoothie recipe that I really like try this

Fill the beaker with:

  • 1/6 frozen mango chunks
  • 1/6 frozen pineapple chunks
  • 1/6 frozen strawberry slices/whole strawberries
  • 1/6 frozen peach slices
  • Fill the rest with greens of your choice and ice
  • Add water or orange juice to fill the spaces left in the beaker
  • Add a scoop of protein powder (optional)
  • Blend and enjoy

Makes a really good breakfast especially because it's really quick and easy to make, and the mango and pineapple go a long way in masking the flavors of the greens, and with the Nutri Ninja you can just slap on one of the to-go lids and still catch the bus to work!

If you don't want to do the drill-attachment, which would probably be the best (even if you stuck a hand mixer attachment to it). You could just get an immersion blender. I've seen it used for probably a gallon or more of other products, so I don't see why it couldn't work for this.

I agree with the shaker though, that removes anything you have to put into the liquid in the first place. And it is probably less maintenance in the long run without having to constantly clean it.

You don't need a $500 blender.

I got this one when it was on sale for ~$100:

https://www.amazon.com/Kitchen-System-Blender-Processor-BL770/dp/B00939I7EK

I feel pretty good about this thing doing everything I need it to do, and that includes kneading seitan. I've had it for 2.5 years and it seems well built enough to last many more years.

I used to have a cheaper blender (oster brand). It was good, but I wouldn't knead seitan in it for fear of killing the motor, and I'm not sure if it would have lasted as long as my ninja.

I'm not saying it's a waste, what I'm saying is that if you have $50 now, can you save an extra $75 or so over the next few months and get something with a stronger motor?

Also, OP wants something to potentially juice with, so that's another cost concern.

No prob! I roasted 1 cup raw sunflower seeds in 1 Tbs coconut oil at 350 F for 15 minutes, stirring halfway through, then generously sprinkled with Kosher salt. You can alternately just buy roasted/salted sunflower seeds, but raw ones from the bulk bin are cheaper. Then I put them in a high-speed blender (this is the one that I have) with another tablespoon of coconut oil and blended for a WHILE, scraping down the sides occasionally. It will turn to a powder at first, but eventually it gets a peanut butter consistency. You can also use a food processor but I don't think the results are as smooth, maybe I would need to add more oil or something. This blogger prefers the food processor and gives instructions for that. HTH!
