My parents couldn't afford much this year, so I bought presents for my little sisters (11 and 13):

http://i.imgur.com/Yrh3Q.jpg

The Harry Potter Boxed Set, The Hunger Games Trilogy Boxed Set, Percy Jackson Boxed Set, Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of Nimh, Number the Stars, Bridge to Terabithia, The Graveyard Book, The Giver, A Wrinkle in Time, From the Mixed-up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler, Pippi Longstocking, Howl's Moving Castle, Where the Red Fern Grows, Island of the Blue Dolphins, The Phantom Tollbooth, The Indian in the Cupboard, When You Reach Me, Because of Winn-Dixie, The Tale of Despereaux, Where The Sidewalk Ends.

The gift of giving, feels good man. To keep them in good condition I covered them all in contact paper. I used this video guide to get it down, and a bone folder to smooth out the air bubbles. They are a little glossier, but will last for years. Same thing public libraries do with trade paperbacks.

$15 for 6 bags! They appear to be really good quality too.

An honest and well-meaning appeal:

If anyone comes to this thread because they're annoyed with plastic bag charges or plastic bag bans, please hear me out. The prospect bugged me a little at first, but then I bought a few of these.

They fit an unbelievable amount of groceries, are pretty cheap, can be painted/dyed if you want to customize them, can be folded up and stuffed anywhere in your car (that way you always have them handy when you go shopping), and are practically built for war. Not only is it cutting down on plastic waste, but it ensure's you'll NEVER have a bag tear on you while you're carrying it around. Also for us "I'm making ONE trip from the car to bring in groceries" types they're heavenly. I think I've carried four of these, loaded with around 80-100lbs of food total, and had no problem (other than my heart rate).

I know the change seems like a pain, but trust me, canvas/reusable bags are a life changer.

  1. Most produce you purchase doesn’t need to go in a bag. Just put it in your cart and wash at home and put in your refrigerator.
  2. Buy reusable mesh bags for produce if you want to use bags

They sell tote bags. There might be other styles but im only familiar with this type

Story: long before i was keen to mlms i saw some bag and inquired, i was told the brand (thirty one) and found out that i could only get it via some convoluted means (find a person online, facebook, etc). I dont use Facebook but i looked it up on my employers account and found them on the local "garage sale" site. I passed. Cause damn, that seemed like a hard way to get a bag for the price. I found similar ones on amazon and walmart and got those instead.

Do any of you guys use a grocery bag carrying tool at all? I got a Grocery Gripps carrying strap from their kickstarter a while ago and I feel like it makes it way easier to carry groceries. It is basically just a strong fabric strap with a loop on both ends but I think it is really handy. I just feed the strap through the grocery bag handles (except for fragile stuff) and then I can carry the weight of the groceries on my shoulder instead of having the bags digging into my hands.

(Disclaimer: I'm not in any way affiliated with the company that makes the Grocery Gripps I linked to, I just think it is a good product!)

I bought two different sets of 6 bags each that come in mixed sizes from Amazon. I’ll include the links below. I washed and air dried them before use. Love them.

Just the gym? Get a cheap fold-up bucket. I have a reusable grocery box from the supermarket ($5). It’s cheap and easier than dragging a rope tarp around. Takes up a small space for busy gym days.

Going to the crag? Get a simple rope tarp ($5-10). Helps keep dirt off the rope, gives you a space to change shoes. Roll your rope up in it when you’re done and drop it into your pack.

Use the money you saved to buy a good decent backpack, like a 50L. It’ll be more essential and versatile than any specialized rope bag, shoving a rope bag inside a backpack is redundant, and carrying two bags is heavy and cumbersome.

Yeah, I actually just realized this same thing recently. I went on Amazon to check for some reusable produce bags, and sure enough hey had some great ones. Bought them and love them.

I got some off of Amazon similar to these: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07H93KK92/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_1RJBCb7E32M7D

They’re machine washable, pretty big, durable, and fold up small enough to stick in a pocket or purse when you go to the store.

I don’t trust them quite enough to fill to their advertised capacity (50lbs seems extreme) but I use them pretty regularly both for the grocery store and non-grocery things like as beach bags (towels, shoes, etc).

WTH...

Girl. You are a SAINT!!! I can’t believe you allow your MIL to cohabitate with your family. K U D O S!!!

It definitely seems like she is trolling you. This is absolutely ridDONKulous since you are letting her live with you free and clear.

I have no idea your arrangement. However, there is NOTHING that anyone could do for me that would entice me to provide these conditions for them.

Your MIL is one LUCKY lady.

So. For starters: I would post on the refrigerator a list of vegan acceptable items. She can’t feign ignorance when educated by your very informed self.

Also. Gently put a stop to the plastic bag-gate. How easy is it to get reusable fabric bags? On a selfish note, the complete ban imposed by Stop and Shop caused me to realize how much EASIER reusable bags are anyways. My fiancé bought these sturdy square reusable bags (link below) and I feel like my life will never be the same lol. No more annoying unpacking of a million plastic bags.

So in lazy terms, this ban has made my life a little easier.

I'll never understand the drive for custom 'gear' when transporting/organizing a wide variety of basically rectangular things. I can maybe see it if you're a traveling D&D DM with a dice addiction.. so any DM? But for typical board game boxes I don't see why an IKEA bag or any old tote bag would be a bad idea. $79 for a tote??? Obviously I'm too late for OP, but for anyone else reading this thread:

u/schadenfroyde · 4 pointsr/notebooks

A saddle stitch book is the most basic type of bind. You basically grab a stack of papers, fold it in half (a bone folder helps with this step) and staple.

A long reach stapler is great for this type of bind because if you're making a wide book you don't have to crease and bend your notebook to get to the center.

You can also use thread to bind the book together and for that you'll need an awl. (see diagram) A punching cradle makes this method easier.

Bonus: If you want to make the edges even and professional looking you can chop it in a book guillotine. The drawback to this is that your book won't be a standard size because you'll be shaving fractions of a inch off.

I use them for everything now, not just cold or hot items, they make the job so much easier. I got 4 of them and now can do most of my largest orders in one trip from car to house from how sturdy the bags are. If it’s a small enough order, i can even put water bottle packages in them to carry easier. These are the ones I use. https://www.amazon.com/Insulated-Reusable-VENO-Collapsible-Eco-Friendly/dp/B07DS29MY4

I got a whole set on Amazon and I get so excited to bring them to the store...Unless its Trader Joe's, cuz they are top-tier planet killers who waste so much plastic on things that don't need to be wrapped in the first place, then judge me for bringing cloth bags to the register.

Thank you :) I love my reusable bags as well! The grocery store that I shop at (just in case we can't name them - I'm in the south, their colors are blue & white and the name starts with a K) has just started carrying a reusable, fold-down box with handles for heavier stuff. They look like these but my store has the cheaper. I bought two this week so I can pack up my sodas and my hubby's Zero drinks without them breaking the bottoms of my regular bags! YAY!!

Edit: had to switch to markdown mode for my hyperlink to show the way I wanted

For some produce, like bananas and ginger, I dont even bother with a bag. For others, I use mesh bags. I bought a set if them off of Amazon and I use them all the time now! This isnt the exact one I have but it seems to just be different colors.

I got this for my birthday.... Planet Wise Reusable Clear Zipper Gallon Bag . I am so excited to use it.... I might put trail mix in it. :D

brown paper bags are a classic. However, if you want to step it up a bit, there are some with a bit more shiny outside and a plastic window. That might work for you. Like these: https://www.amazon.com/Bread-Kraft-Brown-Window-Bakery/dp/B07KG45W7P/ref=sr_1_2_sspa?keywords=paper+bags+bread&qid=1554814112&s=gateway&sr=8-2-spons&psc=1
or fabric ones: https://www.amazon.com/Natural-Linen-Bread-Bags-Housewarming/dp/B076KT472Y/ref=sr_1_18?keywords=paper+bags+cotton&qid=1554814126&s=gateway&sr=8-18
These are pricey but maybe friend can return them? They also have unprinted ones that would be cheaper.

We use these reusable mesh bags. Urge you to do the same.

u/lancealittle · 1 pointr/moderatelygranolamoms

These are the ones I ordered. They're not a huge investment, so if we don't end up liking them I'm ok with it. And I got the planet wise reusable bags to replace the ziploc freezer bags. We have used their products for diaper wet bags and they seem to hold up well.

It's so true. I used to work for a summer camp and all of us camp counselor's kept out food in those [Rubbermaid totes ](Rubbermaid Tote, 14-Gallon https://www.amazon.com/dp/B002SAOCE0/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_FRDtybM2K368Y) so squirrels didn't get in. One day another camp counselor went to pull out some snacks from hers and discovered one little bastard had chewed a fucking hole in the bottom of it, crawled in, ate a ton of her shit and then pissed all over it and left. During that summer I saw so many squirrels making off with people's food.

There was another squirrel that would chill in a tree and throw pine cones at all the kids. Hilarious? Yup. But still a little fucker.

If you're looking for a cheap option that's also really effective, there's reusable grocery bags with inserts that make the bottoms mostly rigid. I got mine at Stop & Shop, but there's variations everywhere. I also just found some on amazon, but they're a bit more expensive there than what I paid in store. They hold a ton, have a nice handle, can handle a lot of weight, provide really easy access, and fold up for storage.

u/MoogleMan3 · 1 pointr/sousvide

>I do love my Anova but using a lot of plastig is really a down side for me

You don't use a lot of plastic with sous vide, and if you google around, I guarantee there's probably 20 or more things you can do in your every day life to be more eco friendly.

For example: I stopped using grocery bags when I go shopping and use these now.

I found two linen bread bags on amazon and I love them. O line them with parchment paper when I store fresh bread and it lasts for a very decent amount of time. I haven’t had to wash them yet but they’re very washable. Natural Linen Bread Bags - 2-Pack... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B076KT472Y

u/NightGod · 1 pointr/worldnews

I got one of these bad boys when I still lived in an apartment. Absolutely loved it. The only reason I don't use it now is because I'm leasing a house and the garage empties into the kitchen.

u/peepea · 1 pointr/vegan

That is really cool, but may I suggest that when you need to get more, consider cotton mesh sacks? These bags have an ethylene blocker, which is why the fruit/veggies take longer to ripen. However, they trap condensation. Cotton mesh allows for the gas released by fruit/veggies, and won't trap condensation. Here's a link to a good website that has sustainable bags, but if that isn't a huge concern, you can get them cheaper on Amazon. I bought mine about 3 years ago, and they still work. Except for the one that got lost.

u/chiquitadave · 1 pointr/Teachers

I use a big honkin' weekender bag I found on Amazon for a song because I'm one of those people who likes to throw entire bins/baskets/boxes/etc into my bag. It's low on pockets, but I could probably smuggle a small child inside the damn thing it's so huge, which was a priority for me. When I don't need to take massive piles of crap home, I've tried other bags (stylish and not), but honestly find myself using a reinforced box-style grocery tote more than anything. When I need to move a computer around, I put the computer in a heavy duty protective sleeve so I can toss it in with whatever else I need.

u/Userleanslocal · 0 pointsr/SeattleWA

Want to really blow their mind? Just buy 300 of plastic grocery bags from Amazon for $13 and have them filled like the terrible canvas ones.
