(Part 2) Best makeup palettes according to redditors

I have this double sided Adept palette and absolutely love it: it holds over 100 singles, is incredibly sturdy (survived a drop from counter hight onto tile with 0 casualties,) saves a lot of space being only 9"×7" & 1" thick. They make a couple other styles and I highly recommend them for quality. They do discount codes pretty regularly and have a final sale section with "damaged" palettes at least half off (I've ordered a few and at the worst, one had a tiny mark on the corner sincevthey'll never sell something unusable.)

I went through a lot of other options before this (XL Z-Palette, original metal style MUFE XL & M large palettes, a 70 pan marble palette by Adept similar to yours by Coloured Raine, and a few by CP) & this is my favorite by far.

Maybe depot the palettes and place them in a z-palette? There are tons of cheap ones on Amazon. Also depotting tools and empty magnetic eyeshadow pots if you need them! Or if you want to keep the shadows in the pots they are already in and the bottoms aren't magnetic you can get magnetic sticker to place on the bottoms for z-palettes.

You know what's save me a ton of money on cosmetics? Working from home. One of the many advantages of working in my dinining room (other than the short commute from the bedroom) is I'm not wearing make-up every day. I am also not popping into the drugstores at least once a week (dangerous territory, it's so easy to splurge on a new lipstick or mascara, and bada-bing, there goes $20).

But obviously I'm the exception to the rule -- if I were going outdoors every day I'd be made up as usual. Still, you can do great by getting eyeshadow palettes at Amazon, and hit your local discount stores to snoop for bargains. I was in Manhattan last week and went to one of my fave discounters where I snagged three different shades of Revlon lipstick for $1.99 -- for the three of them, not each!

I have the 2nd one listed and the colors are terrific, great pigmentation, and you can't beat the price!

I have this palette and I really like all the products and the packaging is nice. However it does not come with mascara. This is not a huge drawback for me as a mascara in sample size is easy to add on.

I got my bruise wheel and two of the fake blood types from Amazon. I'm still waiting on molding wax to show up. It'll give the gashes more depth, instead of them just being blood.

Ah, thank you! I should have checked the Ask Us Anything threads first. I love how yours turned out. The outer shape of those palettes is so nice.

My situation is a little bit different. I got that Saucebox collection that's 32 individual shadows, each 1.5 inches in diameter, and they high-key need a home. Thought about getting a few regular sized palettes and breaking it up to make it more manageable, but landed on this gigantic monster.

If it doesn't work for the shadows I guess I could make it into a nice coffee table. 🤣

Check out Temptalia's review on the ABH palette for dupes for each individual eyeshadow. I would go for the MAC and Makeup Geek dupes for singles, they're $6 each.

Alternatively, the Lime Crime Venus I palette has a very similar feel and is $10 cheaper. If you're opposed to purchasing it directly from Lime Crime because of that security breach they had you can get it from Dolls Kill or Amazon instead. I also see it listed in r/makeuprehab often. If you're opposed to giving Lime Crime your money at all then that's another story :) I have the palette though and it's the only one that survived my great palette purge when I decided to build my own custom palette out of singles and destash the rest. The quality is pretty darn amazing.

The best way I've found of getting over our mutual fear of eyeshadow is to just buy some palettes. I'm a cheapier makeup person than you might be, so I bought the NYX Nude on Nude palette for my Naked/Naked 2-type neutrals (it also comes with great lip gloss!) and a Shany 78 palette for all kinds of crazy colors I'd never buy on their own (plus some extra blushes!) for around $40 all told.

I'm new to makeup, too, and even though I have a couple high-end eyeshadows from Lancome and Smashbox which go on SO SMOOTHLY I COULD DIE, it's taken these cheaper palettes to help me build my skills and try new things. Some don't work, but there's always makeup remover.

You don't have to repress, you can just buy metal stickers for the pans! I buy mine on Amazon, they're great quality.

I use one of these. It's fun to mix lipsticks to achieve your own formula and shades. I don't like to use my hand for lipsticks because sometimes they stain.

I actually used to use just high end foundation and contour, and ive been slowly phasing into high end everything. Currently, eye shadow is the only thing where im still currently using cheap shit because I have so much of it that I dont want it to go to waste. I currently use 4 eyeshadow pallets. The first one is some cheap maybelline shit that I like because it has colors close to skin tone so quality doesnt matter too much, and then pallets 2, 3, and 4, are what I use when im feeling sparkly.

The only things I use from too faced are their better than sex mascara, and I use their contour concealers. I use one several shades lighter than skin tone to highlight, and one several shades darker to contour. Will run you $60 total for the combo of the two. You put a lot of effort into your eyes and I put a lot of effort into my lips. :P

Also! Word of warning: Perma-blood is for props/clothes only. I would highly recommend Ben Nye's makeup wheels for blood and bruises and stuff on skin. It's also high quality and very realistic without being itchy :) This is the one I have.

I'm don't run a larp, so full disclaimers apply, but here are my thoughts. As of right now, you've listed your only expense as the location. I would first add all other necessary expenses, such as website upkeep, so you don't think you have more money than you do. The next thing to do is to open a bank account for the larp. You may want to look online for high interest accounts, often found with online banks- that way, any money that's not immediately being used is making you more money (even if it's very little).

The second thing you want to do is consider what you have and what you need, and as for that, I have two suggestions: thrift stores and larp youtubers. Particularly LarpHouse, Tamwise Travels, and the Thrift Store Larper. LarHouse is chock full of useful information on everything, including a full video on her extensive larp makeup kit. You don't need all of the things on her list by any means, and what you will need depends heavily on what type of larp you are, but the basic Mehron Paradise Paint palette, brushes to apply it, alcohol to clean brushes between use, and Pros-Aide (medical grade adhesive) for prosthetics is probably a good start where makeup is concerned. (Those links are her affiliate links, by the way.) In terms of makeup though, never underestimate the value of good old fashioned regular makeup. Zabrena has done a few pool tests with normal, drugstore makeup- LA girls gel eyeliners, for example, are waterproof and can be used for facepaint. I've used black waterproof eyeliner to make paint on a mask to be Mrs. Incredible.

Tamwise has some great larp tutorials, and a very useful series of buying stuff from Wish, a very cheap online store. It has long delivery times, but sometimes the often enough the product is well worth it- like some uber-cool wax seals she got.

Thrift Store Larper is exactly what it sounds like, and she also has a blog with a couple of good articles. I've gotten tons of larp clothes from thrift store. Leather belts, purses that can be remade, leather or fur things that can be remade, fur vests, glass bottles and jars- the possibilities are endless. It can be a good way to find generic NPC clothes for relatively cheap and easy, and you can often also find lots of cloth, if you have people who can sew. One thing I will say is if you get things for eating that are pewter, make sure to test that there's no lead it in (since pre-1960 there could have been), and you can get tests on Amazon. 99 cents stores can also be your best friend for things like ribbon or fake flowers, which can be a godsend. This store also has some handy odds and ends for pretty cheap, like tiny glass bottles and pouches and such.

It's import to remember, however, that it's only worth spending money on things that will genuinely end up being useful- a really cool thrift store shirt that doesn't quite fit in is worthless, even if it's $20 cheaper than a larp-store bought shirt might be, and you've wasted your money.

You'll want to build up your supply slowly. Staple things, like the facepaint or several good quality makeup brushes, are worth purchasing right away, as are generic costume pieces that can be used over and over again. Remember to include accessories in the generic things you'll need like belts and jewlery. But otherwise, don't buy things until you need them. A cool but specific prosthetic for sale will still be for sale when you have actual use for it. If you think creating Important NPC X's costume will cost $100, budget for at least $125- that means that no one else is spending that 25, even though you don't think you'll need it.

Since you seem to be an American larp, the other thing asides from makeup I'd say is worth splurging on is weapons- if your staff has the time and skill to make them. Getting the supplies and following tutorials for generic larp-safe weapons- there are plenty out there, and they do not have to be expensive. If you allow for them, it may be worth it to occasionally splurge on a latex weapon to be added to your arsenol.

Other general considerations- put in the budget enough to account for staff expenses, such as gas when going shopping for the larp, or the occasional pizza. Your writers should consider budget all the time, but as you build up your supplies of generic stuff, this will hopefully leave time for you to be able to spend a bit more money on the details.

I think that's I can think of this second what, but it mostly comes down to is be frugal and check youtube for a better way, always.

There are some good tips already here but part of getting the look right is having the right products so here are some great ones I have used and some I'd like to use:

Ben Nye bruise color wheel for those nasty reds, purples and especially the yellows and greens you wont find in normal make up.

Ben Nye stage blood in zesty mint for liquid or oozing blood. Edible is a must if you put it in your mouth but keep in mind this does not dry! If you put it on your face or knuckles and then accidentally swipe something it will get everywhere.

Scaring liquid to create small cuts, perfect for a split lip or eyebrow this product shrinks and creates a depression in your skin so it actually looks like a chunk of flesh is gone.

Scar wax is great if you want to build up a broken nose or puffy black eye but it is very sticky and needs to be powdered with either a setting powder or a foundation.

Also here is a pretty good video on how to use these products. Its only missing the scar liquid which you could just lay under the split lip and eyebrow.

This is the seller I bought from, but they've bumped the price a touch! FTB Beauty is also a really great store, but I don't know what their shipping is like as I've only ever shopped in-person.

I like my Inglot freedom palette too! They're sturdy and the magnet is strong -- I never have any worries about travelling with it. On the downside, I find it gets dirtier quicker than my z-palettes for some reason, and I don't love the fit of my pans inside it.

I have oily skin and I like Mehron (water based). I find that moisturising well and foundation helps me keep face paint on. I always bring my face paint and brushes with me to a con just in case. I'll touch up oily spots if needed.

I realised after typing this up that you only asked about makeup and not technique but I figured someone else might want to know how to do this.

You can get the basic colours in a palette (Mehron Makeup Paradise AQ Face & Body Paint 8 Color Palette (Basic) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00FGAET6A/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_tXdJDbTF8TEWW ). They come separately as well. I had two 0.25oz white refills that my friend used twice for Pennywise and Jack Skellington (one 0.25oz per cosplay). If you plan on doing this cosplay frequently then invest in the larger white palette.

If you have very dark eyebrows then you might want to cover them first. To cover your eyebrows, use Elmer's glue stick. I prefer the purple one. You'll need to set it with powder. Baby powder will do in a pinch or Ben Nye if you don't buy makeup setting powder. Then I layer foundation over it, and powder to set. There's tons of drag queen tutorials on how to cover your brows.

Apply Mehron white with a damp makeup sponge and let it dry between layers. Get some brushes (dollar store) and play around with the sizes and application.

The picture up there is a post version of the Joker's makeup done more cleanly. If you can, start out with cleaner lines and rough up the edges with a barely damp brush. You can fake the tear by carefully painting the line. You could also gather a bit more water and blue paint on you brush and guide the drop to naturally slide down your face. Be cautious painting near your eyes as they may water a bit. You should do a makeup test to see which method works best for you and to test the opacity. Mehron goes a long way.

I wouldn't recommend Mehron on the lips. Try a test though. I found it stung my lips a bit and I didn't want to eat or drink any of it during the day. You can use red lipstick or lip stain (lasts longer) from the drug store. My friend forgot to get red face paint for Pennywise so we used my Fenty red lip stain. You can easily find a shade of red lipstick/stain to match the Mehron palette for the eyebrows or use the lipstick/stain and feather out the edges with a dry clean brush.

Set it with makeup setting spray. You can usually find a travel size bottle at Ulta or Sephora. The Joker look is a bit messy so you can go without the makeup setter if you want but it might also help with the oiliness. Super cheap option is hairspray but I would be cautious of inhaling or getting it in your eyes.

You should invest in makeup wipes and makeup remover/face wash. Use the wipes first and then wash the leftovers off after. Mehron is water based but it's still annoying to wash off. A damp towel will work in place of the wipes if you don't use red lipstick/stain. Always clean your brushes. Gentle hand soap will work.

Ooh, thank you! I'm gonna invest in a better wheel soon (I'm thinking the Ben Nye bruise wheel), I think, so I can get a more realistic color variety. These bruises look pretty warm on me, so I figured it'd help to have a bigger color variety too.

I'll practice the grab a little more for a more realistic look! I used my fingers to do it but I didn't think about the spacing at all.
