Top Reddit comments about Men's Shaving Razors & Blades:

I've got an old Gillette from 1905 or something; it's an open comb, and it doesn't open at the top (like yours), but the handle and comb section are one piece, and the top cover has a threaded shaft that runs the length of the handle to an internally threaded screw. The whole thing separates into 3 parts, and looks identical to this: Gillette 1905

I bought mine about 12 years ago, and used it daily for about 10 years. A couple years ago, I switched to a Merkur 34C, and prefer the Merkur; I found the Gillette to be quite brutal at times (it will occasionally peel the skin off, even going with the grain with the same technique/pressure as my Merkur), but I rarely have any issues with the Merkur (usually due to a lapse of judgement). The open comb on the Gillette is great for cutting through longer hair, however. I also have a Dovo Shavette; it allows me to use the same double-edged razor blades (snapped in half lengthwise) as my other razors. I use the Shavette on my face, and the Merkur on my head.

BTW, a good blade makes all the difference, and I hate Wilkinson Sword blades; I found them to be the worst of all the ones I've tried. I was a fan of Gillette blades, but they became hard to source locally a while back, so I found other options. I loved a particular brand called "Fresh", but I think they were a house brand for a company in Western Canada, and I can't source them anymore. I currently use Feather blades (even in my shavette... I like to live dangerously), and occasionally Merkur blades.

BTW: Welcome to the wonderful, intoxicating world of wet shaving. I'll leave this here: You're welcome.

They're currently running such a massive, all-encompassing advertising campaign in London that I'm surprised we haven't had the city renamed Harryville for the next few months.

I haven't been tempted, but that's because I'm firmly settled into what I believe is the optimal set of de-bearding equipment:

  • Muhle R89 or similar decent-quality safety razor.
  • Wilkinson Sword blades (you can get better, but they're £3.50 for 10 in the supermarket and therefore convenient)
  • Nivea shaving gel. (Nice soap and a badger brush are better, but I am also lazy so the handy can of shaving goop wins.)

Tried all sorts of fancy multi-blade options but nothing works as well as the simple, tried and true safety razor. The ones with loads of blades just clog in the first stroke and then they're blunt after a couple of shaves, which is a bit disappointing when you're paying nearly two quid for a blade.
u/StevenMC19 · 24 pointsr/Frugal

Some comparison math for those wanting to see the numbers right now:

All from Amazon.com, and the cheapest I could find at a decent quality...

  • Gillette Fusion Pro Glide w/ Flex ball and two blade refills: $10.59
  • Gillette Fusion razor blade refills, 12 count: $40.99

    __

  • Merkur Long Handled Safety Razor w/ guard, w/ 1 platinum-coated double-edged razor: $29.85
  • Personna Double-edged Razor Blades, 100 count: $14.54

Already, the totals are: Fusion, $51.58 and the safety razor, $44.39.

    Now, let's shave.

I'm not including cream or soap, since that's a preference for people, and can change prices drastically for what people use. Personally, I use absolutely nothing; water works just fine and I don't break out at all like I would if I applied some sort of substance on my face prior to scraping it off.

We'll give Fusion the benefit of the doubt as well, by getting THREE shaves out of a single blade. The double-edged razors, we'll toss out after every shave (yup, double-edged or not, resharpened or not, one and done for this experiment). We're going to shave twice a week. That's 104 times a year (I wanted a figure close to 100, because I like that number).

Fusion: One razor, 35 blades (three shaves per blade). That's three packs of replacement blades, totaling out to 38 blades including the two that come in the starter pack...$10.59 + ($40.99 x 3) = $133.56. You can go an additional nine shaves before having to buy another replacement pack.

Safety razor: One razor, 104 blades (one shave per blade). That's two packs of replacement blades, totaling out to 201 blades including the one that comes in the starter pack...$29.85 + ($14.54 x 2) = $58.93. You can go an additional nine...ty-seven shaves before having to buy another replacement pack.

The craziness is that even after giving as much home field advantage to Fusion as I could, they still cost over $70 for the first year. Realistically, you can get a lot more shaves out of the single-blade, double-edged razors which increase the longevity of a single replacement pack. If treated properly, one 100pk can last over three years. Those "moisture" strips on blades today last maybe a shave, and they're just about worthless afterwards; hairs constantly get stuck in between the blades and are difficult as fuck to remove, thus causing frustration or added swipes to get all the hairs off your face; and these added technologies like a swivel head, vibrating shaft, lubrication spitting spout, or rotating super ball does nothing differently than what you've already learned how to do with the contours of your own face and how the products treat your skin, rendering these features completely redundant.

    It's a no brainer.

Edit: Oops, messed the links up. FIXED NOW!

Edit edit: I just want to state that I am in now way shunning the use of the pro glide if it works for you. If you have found a way to increase the longevity of those blades, and you prefer them to any other blade, then by all means, continue to shave with what you like best. This price comparison is to show to those one the fence about trying a new method, or are searching for new methods to save a couple bucks, that there is an alternative. This formula is very basic, and doesn't contain all the variables that go with shaving (i.e. sharpening blades, the actual amount of shaves you can get from a single cartridge, a high quality durable electric pre-shave, hair growth and thickness). This is just to show that the single blade product at its most basic level is a much cheaper solution to shaving needs.

u/GREEN_BUCKSAW · 15 pointsr/Frugal

You should start shaving with an old school double edge safety razor. See /r/wicked_edge for more info.

I use a Merkur razor and Feather razor blades.

There are special shaving brushes and shaving soap but I don't use those. I use normal shaving foam.

The price is about 30 cents per razor blade. Each blade lasts me a week. However I don't shave every day.

u/DocLefty · 14 pointsr/BuyItForLife

Parker 91R Safety

Derby Bulk Razors

I shave everyday cause I have to (military) and I have a fairly tough beard so I replace the blade once a week.

You can make your own shave oil & aftershave

u/LR2 · 13 pointsr/pics

I have a very think beard and shaving with a safety razor has greatly reduced irritation and other shaving issues. I did the research a few years ago and here is the exact equipment I've been using since then:

Merkur Long Handled Heavy Classic

Feather Razor Blades

Note though that feather blades are known to be the sharpest ones available and aren't usually recommended for beginners (they are made in Japan and laser cut). The consensus is that a new user should buy a sample pack that includes a variety of blades first. Then after putting them each under a trial shave decide which one is best for you.

If you want to really get into it, I'd recommend searching for wet shaving techniques on youtube and watching some tutorials. I recommend this guy's channel.

Edit: Here is the site that I bought my blade samples from: http://westcoastshaving.com/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=2&zenid=122d4b8441a2cf87676bab4889929f2c

Also, if you don't want to go through the trouble, gillette sells these types of blades at all the major stores. Also, it's worth noting that blades are a lot cheaper if you buy them off ebay. Either way though they are substantially cheaper than buying cartridges.

u/qpid · 12 pointsr/wicked_edge

My $.02 (For ease of use everything is linked to Amazon, prices will vary)

Razor: Merkur 180, $32

Brush: Escali 100% Pure Badger, $14

Shaving Cream: Proraso, $11

Blades: Sampler Pack, $20

And then that leaves ~$20 to play with to buy a a nice book on shaving, or a shaving stand, or some aftershave

best razors on the planet + a merkur safety razor = I will never go back to any american disposable head crap razor.

u/Leisureguy · 10 pointsr/wicked_edge

This morning I used the Utopia Care razor, which (at $11) seems an extremely good value. I would say the head is a trifle more aggressive than those on the Maggard razors, but I'm starting to feel that novices have to learn in any case, and they'll learn whatever razor they're given. Within reason. The Utopia Care is, I think, within reason.

2. Musgo Real Glycerine Lime Soap, MR GLO - Face soap, used before each shave.

3. Proraso Shaving Soap with Eucalyptus Oil and Menthol - Shave soap, whipped up then applied to face for shaving.

4. Proraso Pre and Post Shave Cream - Pre/Post shave cream, massaged into face after washing face with MR GLO. Massaged into face again after shave.

5. Proraso Aftershave Lotion - Aftershave, applied to face either after shave or after shower. My wife likes the smell of this.

6. TABAC ORIGINAL For Men By MAURER & WIRTZ Deodorant Stick - Deodorant, masculine scent of lavender, citrus, and warm florals.

7. Colonel Conk Evernice Model 775 Chrome Safety Razor Stand - Stand, holds DE razor and brush.

8. Merkur Model 180 Long Handled Safety Razor - DE Razor, great weight and balance used to shave face.

9. Tweezerman Men's Shaving Brush - So, so brush used for applying shave soap. Would like a better brush someday.

10. Feather Hi-Stainless Platinum Double Edge Razor Blades - Razors for DE, my favorite so far.

11. Tweezerman His Moustache Scissors with Comb - Scissors and comb, after movember I decided to keep the mustache so these items help maintain its appearance.

12. Comb - Comb, used for combing hair before and after shower.

13. Aveda Men Pure-Formance™ Grooming Clay - Hair product, used after shower with hair wet or dry. Hair looks natural but styled. I'll use pomade if I want the appearance of having a more polished look.

14. Large Stainless Steel Shaving Soap Bowl from Super Safety Razors - Mug, I'd rather have a porcelain mug for class but this does the trick. I use it to soak my brush and razor before each shave. I also use it for creams when not using Proraso.

u/MilmoWK · 9 pointsr/insaneparents

a safety razor, and if they are worried about chrome and other cheap metals, they make all Stainless steel razors too.

u/Mister_Shifty · 7 pointsr/wicked_edge

Your Van Der Hagen razor is a rebranded Weishi and isn't terrible, just cheap. I used one for 2 years straight and while I could get good shaves out of it, it was very mild and inefficient for me. That basically means it didn't remove much hair (especially if I had more than 3 or 4 days of growth) per pass.

With that said, it was still a damn sight better than any cartridge razor I ever used. I echo the sentiments of others here, you can find better options that are still inexpensive at sites like https://www.maggardrazors.com .

u/arbarnes · 7 pointsr/wicked_edge

It isn't clear what you're asking. Do you want to try a different razor instead of your DE89, or are you asking for recommendations of razor blades to use in your DE89?

As far as razors go, the DE89 is not aggressive at all. You could try a cheap Chinese TTO like a Baili or a Weishi, but it's really unlikely that you're getting irritation because your razor is "too aggressive." If it's blades you're asking about, there's no such thing as "mild" or "aggressive." Just try a variety of them and pick which feels best to you.

But the fact is that the problem is likely your technique rather than your equipment. You say your lather is fine, but you don't mention what you're using or how you're using it. And if you really weren't using any pressure, you wouldn't be getting razor burn or weepers. The reason most people use too much pressure is that it's the natural way to compensate for incorrect blade angle. Get your lather and your angle right, and everything else will follow.

Using a DE razor is an acquired skill. Rather than blaming your tools, focus on learning how to use them well. Don't shoot for perfection right away; just try to make each shave a little better than the last. With continual improvement you'll eventually get the results you're looking for.

u/Ruzihm · 7 pointsr/LifeProTips

Aren't disposable razors like the one shown in the pic a subset of safety razors?

(In contrast with disposable straight razors like this one)

u/Carnephex · 6 pointsr/Frugal

You can economize instead of going with the Merkur razor by going with a comparable Parker razor.

Parker Heavy Weight

They take the same blades, and the quality is just as nice. I use a heavyweight as my field razor since it takes abuse without a complaint.

The stands are easy to make yourself from some metal pipe and parts from Home Depot. Sand and paint it with enamal and you'll have something that will last for many years.

Last, the brushs need to be cared for, that means you rinse them after use and then air dry.

http://www.wikihow.com/Care-for-a-Badger-Shaving-Brush

I like my safety razors a lot because they give me a close shave with a very heavy beard. Your face will also look a lot better as less time exposed to a blade means less knicks and cuts.

u/aardvarkspleen · 6 pointsr/olympia

I'd imagine you're question has already been answered, but you'd recently asked about a razor for your husband. I have had a fantastic time with one of these:

http://www.amazon.com/Dovo-Shavette-Straight-Razor-Handle/dp/B001GMVNXO/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1426566217&sr=8-3&keywords=dovo+shavette

It has affordable, replaceable blades, a comfortable handle, and is genuinely well made. I bought it thinking I might go into straight razor shaving, but there's no need. The blades in this are nearly as long, and replaceable. You don't have to have a length of leather to sharpen your blade in your bathroom.

My girlfriend loves Dreadnaught cream. Even if he does not use the straight razor to shave, this cream smells amazing. I tell all my friends to buy it, regardless of their method.

This razor is going on special at 4:55pm ET, this Weishi at 6:55pm ET, and this Dorco starter set at 7:35pm ET, but I'd rather have a razor from Maggard's or Italian Barber which will almost definitely shave better than what I'm pretty sure are all Weishi's of some sort, and probably be as cheap if not cheaper. There's also a stainless steel shaving bowl starting at 6:55pm ET if that sort of thing is interesting to you. It will be under the "Beauty" category if you want to have a look around yourself for any beard oils or other such stuff that strikes your fancy.

u/Synaesthesiaaa · 6 pointsr/justneckbeardthings

I'd suggest starting off with a Dorco razor starter kit. It's pretty cheap and has almost everything you need, aside from a brush and a shaving soap. Aftershave is completely optional, but it definitely improves the feel of your skin afterward. I use Chiseled Face soap, specifically Summer Storm and Ghost Town Barber.

Feel free to ask anything else. I've been shaving dual edge for a good year and a half now. Best choice I've made in regards to personal grooming.

u/plazman30 · 5 pointsr/wicked_edge

For all intents and purposes it's a 60's Superspeed. Feels the same in the hand as a Superspeed. Weights a little more than a Superspeed. In terms of aggressiveness, it's between a red tip and a Superspeed.

From what I read previously, these things are nickle-plated stamped brass, just like a vintage 60s Gillette. I wonder if Weishi bought some old Gillette manufacturing equipment.

I bought the black one, which costs more. If you get the standard silver one, it's only $9.98 on Amazon.

If this was the only razor I owned, I woldn't have any complaints.

u/thefrozendivide · 5 pointsr/BuyItForLife

I have a merker (this one: http://customshaving.com/merkur-safety-razor-38c.html?gclid=CjwKEAjwkrmhBRD49Mbm_MvruWsSJAAEDt13-_b8i-ri6Aakhd5LV9g53U2zbJLJvGG6mVj0QkAifBoC3Jzw_wcB ) and I've had it for a few years now. I use Feather brand blades. These blades are absolutely, hands down, by a LONG shot, the best blade I have EVER used. (here:http://www.amazon.com/Feather-Hi-Stainless-Platinum-Double-Blades/dp/B001G5HZCY ) They last a few shaves and are sharper still on their 4th shave than any gilette razor blade out of the box. Also, you get 30 of them for less than $12!! A good clean, close, shave with my set up also seems to last longer than any of your other run of the mill multi-bladed bullshit razors too.
It's a one time investment you will not regret, after you shave with a safety razor and a good blade, theres no looking back, you'll think how you could have possibly gone so far down the road of 4,5, or more blades and not just given these a try. I could not be happier with my set up.
Enjoy.

u/heavymetalrocks · 5 pointsr/overclocking

Didn't take pics of the process, but here is the photos of the lid off https://imgur.com/a/r3AFuwm

Here is a short description of how I did it:

I used one of the super thin double-sided razor blades that go into an old shaving razor like these (non-affiliate amazon link). They are quite brittle so, I snapped a blade into 4 smaller pieces by bending it with pliers. I then slide the sharp side under the SoC lid one each side to break the seal around the edge. It slides under surprisingly easy, with slight help from the pliers. I then inserted two pieces of razor blade into opposite sides of the lid to use as guards/guides for the pliers, so I wouldn't grab the SoC itself. I grabbed the lid with the pliers and give a slight twist, it came right off. It was quite easy compared to the video I saw delidding a Pi 3 with thicker razor blades and a heat gun.

I always recommend newbies start off with a Edwin Jagger DE89L. It's inexpensive, effective and a easy razor to use. It makes for a great starter razor.

EDIT: Nevermind. I reread your post and seen he's an "avid wet shaver". In your budget, perhaps a Merkur 39C Slant

u/eaglessoar · 4 pointsr/business

I buy packs of 100 and change them every week (granted I only shave once per week), so for under $9 I get two year's worth of shaves and shave with a fresh razor every time. Heck if you shaved twice per week you could use a new razor every time for a year for under $9.

They just took advantage of the fact that razors (e.g. Mach 20 or whatever they're up to) are ridiculously over engineered and over priced

u/gtpenc · 4 pointsr/wicked_edge

To you question about the gear you selected, IMO those are some great choices, and I have that exact same razor. And guess where I bought my EJ89LBL, Amazon.

I only wanted to add though, you are in Germany! Germany has some fantastic shaving gear. Solingen is the razor capital of the world. I would think you could get some good deals on brands like Merkur or Muhle. In fact, the closed comb Muhle has the identical head to the EJ. And Muhle have some nice brushes too.

I travel to Germany from time to time on business usually around the Dusseldorf/Koln area which is close to Solingen. One of these days I'd like to go check it out.

Op get this and this and your balls will be nice smooth eggs for a long time on the cheap.

u/otterland · 4 pointsr/wicked_edge

If you're working to make Williams work, you're not gonna make it work. Load brush, get on face, bring up a minor lather, shave. It's fast soap with little cushion but good glide. Trying to mug whip it is an exercise in futility. I feel ya. For a five minute rock and roll shave it's fabulous, but it's not gonna make you feel like a princess.

You know you can get carts for your Atra that run 14c? Might be worth having around at that price.

u/Emailisnowneeded · 4 pointsr/todayilearned

The handles are more for weight preference. The blades themselves are what vary. I used to get irritated bad until I switched to safety. If you still get irritation from the actual cutting, or your hair is so course it pulls, buy a variety pack (example) and see what works and what doesn't. Personally, I prefer Astra or Derby but I doubt I have as course hair as you. I've heard decent things about feather as well but no personal experience with that brand.

As for prep, OP could probably point you in the right direction. I just use a shave brush with "sensitive skin" shave creme and have no issues. Sounds like you will probably want a pre-shave product that softens the hair though. I'd also recommend avoiding any alcohol based after shave products. I'm a big fan of one with tea tree oil and/or witchhazel

Edit: forgot to mention, try doing a 2 pass system if you've been just going against the grain. First pass WITH the hair to get it all down then 2nd pass CROSS (as opposed to against) grain to get super low. That helped me a lot and still gets it down super low. Mileage may vary though.
Also, try pre-wet and shave with hot water, clean off at the end with cold.

u/ProfessorD2 · 3 pointsr/wicked_edge

Unfortunately, Art of Shaving once again is overpriced compared to everyone else.

Amazon has this exact Dovo Shavette for $39.

Maggard has a very similar Dovo but with a black plastic handle for $33.

u/AlohaChris · 3 pointsr/MensRights

Screw Gillette.

Ditch the disposable razors altogether. Buy yourself a double edge safety razor for $26, one time, and never look back.

The Blades cut so clean, you’ll never want for multi-blade again. You’ll save so much money in the long run as they cost pennies compared to disposable head razors.

If you need technique advice, head on over to r/wickededge.

u/GabrielDunn · 3 pointsr/YouShouldKnow

How about using a double edged safety razor? Blades run about 6 cents per blade. I've been using the same box for 4 years now. I shave both my face and head with a safety razor. Shave like your grampa did! It's a better shave and much cheaper than cartridges or disposables.

Well, I'm also new at this, so take everything I saw with a grain of salt. I think you should get a different sampler, which includes a greater variety of blades. Everyone can link you to what they got, but you know what's in your budget, and what you want. Here's what I got. It's missing a few popular brands (namely, Sharks), but it does it for me.

As for everyone saying not to get that particular razor, it's the one I chose and I'm extremely satisfied with it.

As far as the aftershave goes, I don't use aftershave. I do use a facial moisturizer that I had laying around my bathroom. That being said, I'd probably get one if I wasn't really poor. But if you're satisfied without it, why spend more money than you need?

Lastly, have you thought about trying any soaps, as opposed to cream? You can get some Colonel Conk soap for very cheap (the general consensus is that it's a decent soap, but not special).

I switched to a safety-razor and I'm much, much happier with the results.

You want blades?

Seems pricey to pay US$20 more just for a skull & crossbones etching. Also, you want to be careful with the smooth-handled EJ (or rebranded) razors as they can be very slippery to handle while shaving. Most Muhle razors are also rebranded EJ razors. There are a couple of other brands (Baxter's comes to mind) that are also slightly modified EJ razors. They all have the same heads and all shave the same way. I would go with the cheapest Edwin Jagger that I liked the handle style of.

The heads of these razors are made from a zinc alloy, and zinc is a somewhat brittle metal. If you drop one of these razors they stand a good chance of breaking. This is true with many different brands of modern razors including Merkur, Pearl/RazoRock and others. That doesn't mean these aren't good razors, however like most things they just aren't made to be dropped.

If you are really worried about breaking your razor, you could get one made from better materials. Weber razors are highly regarded and made completely of stainless steel. Ikon razors are likewise made of stainless steel. Feather also makes a good stainless steel razor. Of course, you have to pay more to get such high quality razors. Compared to most razors these ones are 2-4 times as expensive.

You could also check out Fatip razors which are more reasonably priced and made of plated brass so they should be very sturdy.

While there is absolutely nothing wrong with Edwin Jagger/Bluebeard/Muhle or Merkur razors, there are a lot of different options out there. You might want to see what is available before making a purchase.

BTW. Can you post photos of your dad's old razor?

  • Maggard Razors MR7 $19.95
  • Omega 10049 boar brush $9.99
  • Arko shaving stick pack of two $4.95
  • Blade sampler, 5 brands 25 blades $5.25

    Total: $40.15 + shipping.

But if that is too much then consider the below option

  • Utopia razor +10 Derby blades $10.99
  • Omega 10049 boar brush $9.75
  • Arko shaving stick pack of two $4.55
  • Tryablade, pick at least 3 blades each of these
  • 3x Astra Superior Platinum
  • 3x Personna Platinum (Israeli reds)
  • 3x Feather New Hi-Stainless
  • 3x Gillette 7 o'clock SharpEdge
  • 3x Shark Super Stainless

    Total: $32.09

I haven't really followed the Utopia razor, but the few threads that I did read had overall positive reviews. One complaint I did see was that some of the users had received a defective razor, bent baseplate for example.

The Arko shaving stick can be used as it is, as an shaving stick, you rub the stick on your face and then use a wet brush to lather it. Shaving stick video. Or you can use it as an regular shaving soap. Cut the stick into smaller pieces with a knife and then press the pieces into a container of some sort. Load the brush over the soap puck and then move the loaded brush into a separate bowl, or directly to your face and start building the lather.

This post has information about shaving brushes in general. Read the parts about boar shaving brushes and watch the lathering videos.

    -----------

    >In general Mantic59 and Geofatboy have good videos on youtube. There is also a book written by Leisureguy, it is available in all amazon sites.

    >This video from Geofatboy basically shows what DE shaving looks like. I also like this video It shows a full shave from start to finish. You don't really need to understand what he says in the beginning.

    >---------

    >The necessary items are; razor, brush, cream/soap, and blade sampler pack. This article by Leisureguy explains the blade issue very well. For aftershave you can use whatever you currently have, but if you don't have anything you can pick up Nivea sensitive aftershave balm from your local supermarket for $6.

    >There are preshave creams, oils, and soaps. These are not necessary, but some users do find them helpful. A cheap glycerin soap like the "clearly natural" or "whole foods 365" can be had for about 2-3 dollars. You use these soaps to wash your face before you start lathering.

    >For post shave there is; alum block, afershave splash, aftershave balm, moisturizing cream, moisturizing oil like jojoba oil, unrefined shea butter, and witch hazel. You pretty much have to try which works for you, but I'd start with a cheap aftershave balm like the Nivea sensitive that I mentioned (if you get satisfactory results with it you don't have to explore the other options unless you want to).

    >You don't need a shaving stand. If you like how they look you can use/get one, but that's about it. After you are done shaving, rinse the brush well under the running water from the tap, shake out the excess water, gently brush the brush against a towel, stand it on its base out in the open where it can air dry. Mantic59 - Cleaning a shaving brush video.

    >For bowl lathering you can use any small sized bowl you have in your house. Approximately 3 inches deep and 5-6 inches in diameter would be a good size. You can also find something from your local supermarket for couple of dollars. Alternatively you can face lather which removes the need for a bowl.

I have one of these and it works great, Amazon also used to sell "Utopia" and it works great as well. I dont know that there are "bad" shavettes all they have to do is hold the blade. From what I've seen here and in personal experience there are just good shavettes and better shavettes.

I bought the good razors like 25$ ones but still got razor burn. I got this and don't have that problem anymore: Dorco Prime Starter Set: Double Edge Safety Butterfly Shaver Handle, 30 Double Edge Razor Blades and Travel Case https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00T5EQC1I/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_KdHhybF2AW495

u/uroc · 3 pointsr/Wet_Shavers

It was a Dorco Primer Starter Set. Probably the razor is just rebranded or included with the Dorco blades.

At some point I want to go back and retry the dorco blades in merkur. I changed too many things so I'm just not sure which was my biggest problem.

EDIT: looks like it is a Weishi butterfly razor.

u/rkhbusa · 3 pointsr/BuyItForLife

I did the straight razor thing for a good couple of years. The maintenance on a straight razor is a bit time consuming so I eventually gave it up. A double blade safety razor with Feather blades is my personal recommendation. You can get 200 blades on amazon for $40 US, each razor has two sides as the name implies and I usually switch out blades every 4 shaves, but at $.20 a blade if I was being a real princess I’d switch every 2 shaves. I used to get ingrown hairs all the time but with Feather blades it’s a very rare occurrence I’ll never go back to Gillette and their garbage blade packs.

Q shave is the adjustable safety razor I would recommend it’s a Chinese knockoff of the Merkur adjustable but at 1/5th the price and does an almost indistinguishable job of holding a razor blade, albeit a little light in the handle.

I'm in the UK, so got mine from Shave Lounge, but I was thinking about using Connaught for more blades, as their postage seems a little cheaper (also, I kinda like their archaic website). There are lots of US suppliers listed on the /r/wicked_edge wiki.

I got a Parker 91R because I believe that the handle should be knurled. It's not that fancy (although I see there are cheaper), but it's fine. You can get it for $30 in the US, it seems.

Buy a sampler or two of blades and see which ones you like. This seems to be a subjective matter - I've only tried two brands so far, as they're the ones which came with my razor; I liked the Derby Extra, which lots of people seem to dislike, whereas the Persona Platinum didn't suit me.

I kinda think the subscribers to /r/wicked_edge are taking it a bit too seriously, posting photos of their new razors and making it into a "hobby", but I can feel a noticeable difference between the two brands of blades.

The /r/wicked_edge subscribers harp on about shaving gel / foam being shitty - I bought a brush and the kind of shaving soap they recommend, but haven't used it, as Gillette gel still seems fine to me.

Hope this helps.

Actually, these are safety razors. What you've got there is generally known as a shavette. Shavette is technically a proprietary name for the Dovo version, but it has come to be used as a generic term for razors like these, much like 'Kleenex' has come to be used for tissues in some parts of the world.

u/Hombre_Sin_Nombre · 2 pointsr/malegrooming

I use a Dovo shavette...I hate the name, but the quality is great. With it using disposable blades, you don't have to worry about honing or stropping.

Yup, I got the newer version with the updated head after I saw you post the news on W_E a few months back. I promise I'm not being creepy, I just saved the post on reddit so that I could use the pictures to compare my 37C when it arrives to be sure it's the updated model and it turns out it was. According to mantic59, West Coast Shaving carries only the redesigned head and it looks like Amazon also carries it as well - or at least they only updated the photos on the item listing and not necessarily 100% of their inventory. From the looks of it, it would appear the 39C got the same treatment as well

Neither is my safety razor, or even my dollar club like razor, or my shavevette razor.

How about 11 usd for 100 blades?.

u/Megalonyx · 2 pointsr/northernlion

In regards to razors, recently went from cartridge ones to the double edge razors and its awesome. Like $16 on a nice metal handle thing on Amazon that twists open and you drop the razor blade into it then twist it shut and shave. Got like 100 blades for $10 and I'm set for eons.

Its nice as its a lot less garbage plastic and stuff, cheaper, and for my baby skin doesn't cut the shit out of me and get clogged like the multiblade cartridges. Downside is the head doesn't swivel and tilt, but it's easy to get used to.

Edit: This handle and these blades in particular. They're alright, and apparently good shaving cream helps a lot. Just wish I had found these to begin with, rather than using DSC for years.

u/DallasDanielle · 2 pointsr/PCOS

This is my all-time favorite razer, and it comes in a 'sensitive skin' version.

u/airbornesimian · 2 pointsr/wicked_edge

I would recommend staying away from the Jagen David; it looks to be a re-branded Weishi.

If you're looking at amazon, here are my top choices for you:

Parker 24C

Muhle R89

Edwin Jagger DE89L

Edwin Jagger DE89

Edwin Jagger Kelvin

The Parker 24C is an open comb safety bar design and a good razor. The rest of them are all the same razor head on different handles, so pick the handle you like best. They have a straight safety bar rather than an open comb, and are also good shavers.

Both of these razor head designs are more modern and efficient than the Merkur 34C, or any Merkur razor, for that matter. You won't go wrong with any of them.

Hope that helps.

Molto divertenti e istruttivi questi video in proposito:

I just ordered my beginning DE set, so I haven't shaved yet. But based on my research:

I got this blade sampler $16 because it has a decent variety of brands, and I read somewhere it's better to have more than one or two blades per brand when you're experimenting. If you're willing to spend a little more, maybe try this $40 sampler with 21 brands, I'd say that's your best bet for finding a brand you like.

I think you're confused on the terminology. Replacement cartridges are like 75% of the market and they call those "refills".

I never thought I'd spend nearly $200 (1800 SEK, from a Swedish store) on a razor, but here I am. What the hell, since I'm never going to go back to the Gillette plastic garbage, why not go all in? Judging from the positive reviews on Amazon, it seems to have been a good investment.

I haven't had time to try it yet, but based on the looks and feel of it, it's worth every penny. The build quality and machining is insane. It's kinda light (90 grams) compared to my Merkur Futur 700 (120 grams), but still feels solid as hell. I can't see it being bruised or nicked in the first try.

u/p0tent1al · 2 pointsr/wicked_edge

Sort of.

What I've used:

EJ89, Merkur 37C Slant (my current go to).

I just end up irritated after using them though... like it "works" (I'm getting the best shaves of my life) but I'm not entirely happy. My skin gets irritated very easily, and I feel like I've seen reviews for razors where people are like "Every other razor irritated my skin (once I get to my stubble, my hair is a beast) except this one" or something to that degree. I've heard about the Weber ARC and this one: http://www.amazon.com/All-Stainless-Steel-Safety-3-5inch-Feather/dp/B004E5GV82

Either that, or I'm thinking with my type of hair, I might have to shave every other day instead of every 2 days, so it might be technique... but yeah I digress.

About me: fairly tough hair... most barbers have had a tough time clean shaving me or I break out everywhere because of my sensitive skin.

What would you suggest? The ARC, the Future, or the expensive one I linked to? (or none, just keep messing with my configuration?)

u/Babyd3k · 2 pointsr/wicked_edge

That is how a standard shavette works. The Feather SS actually use a custom blade from feather, the replaceable blade is longer and has rounded edges to better replicate the shave of a traditional straight razor. I just got mine but the shave is awesome and I am using the 3rd dullest blade you can buy for it. It is specifically recommended you do no learn on their sharpest blades.

The really suck parts are the blade replacements are a bit spendy ($13.60 for 20), are only made by feather, and I couldn't find anyone stateside selling them.

You can check out the handle here.

I use an Andis Professional T-Outliner to get the rough line in my beard. Then I use OSTER Fast Feeds to trim all the hairs down. Then, I use a straight razor to line up the actual line. I use an Aberlite Beard Shaper with the straight razor and Aloe Vera as a shave gel

I also pluck the thicker hairs on my cheeks every now and then

u/zomborger · 2 pointsr/gifsthatendtoosoon

That barber used a shavette rather than a straight razor. It's more sanitary and you don't have to worry about stropping since the blades are disposable. I'm guessing the one used in the video is made by Feather. Feather has some of the sharpest and highest quality blades on the market probably because their primary products are medical blades.

This is the one I have but they also make a folding handle one. The blades used are disposables like this (there's a picture of the blade in the item description).

It can be or it can't be. I started a couple of years ago (maybe 3?) and when I did, I spent about $120 for everything. Since then, I've spent a total of about $50. That includes blades and soap.

Really, to get started all you need is a razor and blades, then you can buy the soaps or creams piecemeal as you go. A lot of manufacturers will give you free (or cheap) samples of their products, so you can try before you buy.

My recommendations for starting out are:
razor
blades

You can get a cheaper razor, but I recommend a longer handle. You can also find nice older ones at antique shops for really cheap if you're willing to clean them up before using them. I'm not that patient, but maybe you are. The blades are a variety pack, so you can get an idea of what you like because they're all a little bit different. The last time I replaced my blades I bought these because they're really cheap (less than 10¢ per blade) and I like them a lot.

Eventually you might want to get a brush and some fancy soap, but I've seen brushes at Walmart for $5 or less.

There's a lot of fancy lingo that goes into wet shaving, but it's really not a whole lot different than using disposables. The only real differences are that you have to take better care of your skin (shucks), you don't have to press as hard with the razor, and you control the angle of the blade (a blessing and a curse.)

If you have any questions, please ask! There's also always the sidebars at /r/ladyshavers and /r/wicked_edge!

Great find. As stated that's a TracII handle. Great razor for short trips where you done feel like checking luggage to have your shave gear. I found that Personna still makes cartridges that are compatible with them. Link

u/billobob · 2 pointsr/wicked_edge

If you want to use it, personna still makes trac II compatible carts (and theyre better than some ebay chinese trash): link

The price on these is actually amazing, better than many DE blades IMO considering you can get 7-10 shaves from one if you properly keep it dry

u/redgoldfilm · 2 pointsr/wicked_edge

This has opened my eyes, thanks again. Can I ask which blades are you currently using... or your top 3? Also, what do you think of the Utopia Care?

u/Archangel_Omega · 2 pointsr/wicked_edge

Well this one is just over the $10 mark, but has free shipping. It was my first DE, and it's a fairly solid 3 piece. I used it for about 3-4 months till I got my Merkur, and its held up to travel abuse ever since.

u/pythed · 2 pointsr/Wet_Shavers

If you can find it, http://www.amazon.co.uk/Shaving-Throat-Shavette-coolcut-Wood-r5/dp/B00GNRC8XG. I personally have a feather artist club that I absolutely love. It's a little more expensive (basically the cost of an SR, but without the associated cost of accessories like a strop, finishing stone, oils or CrOx)

u/zack2491 · 2 pointsr/wicked_edge

I picked up a Sanguine Shavette a couple months ago. Wood is unfinished, but no complaints from me. Had a Dovo Shavette first, and it was too light.

They have a few other models with plastic or metal scales as well.

u/sig303 · 2 pointsr/wicked_edge

I've not tried it myself, but I've heard these fit more or less - judging from the photos you might want to counter sink the holes for the SS pin/bolt. Otherwise, the look fairly similar in shape to the AC DX wood scales.

As an aside, more weight on the scales is not necessarily a good thing as that can cause the blade to want to torque/twist more changing the shaving angle. More weight in the blade, rather than the scales, can be good for a variety of reasons. Of course, the weight difference might not be large enough to cause any real problems and is probably worth the $16 gamble as anything looks better than the stock SS scales.

Shave after warm shower. Use pre-shave oil and quality shave soap.
Use an adjustable razor set to lowest number or an exceptional mild razor like the PAA DOC original, but with a very sharp blade such as Feather.

Once lathered, use only cold water to complete shave. Shave by removing the lather (really light touch), don't try to remove facial hair. Take a look at the FAQ.

After shave ritual: cold water rinse, witch-hazel, balm, then aftershave

u/popepeterjames · 1 pointr/reddit.com

Agreed! But I'm partial to BlueBird blades... a little sharper and last a little longer than Shark (which are also good) but they won't shave your face off like you can with Feather blades... and a little cheaper too!

My razor is a Parker 91R Super Heavyweight (I like it)... and it's inexpensive.

And then for my shave cream I use Taylor of Old Bond Street... a little goes a very long way. The stuff is great.

A good badger shave brush and a shave mug.... maybe some pre-shave oil if you really want to take your time. And you got yourself a shave that is far closer and more comfortable than an expensive as hell cheaply-made multi-bladed razor...

Sure upfront costs are slightly higher, but in the long run you save tons of money... plus you get a better shave. What's not to love?

u/addcream · 1 pointr/Frugal

Parker Safety razor: http://www.amazon.com/Parker-91R-Heavyweight-Safety-Razor/dp/B001AKFXN8

A lot of people like feather blades (I haven't tried them) but I'm happy with Derby (also bought on Amazon)

u/naery · 1 pointr/wicked_edge

This has been covered before, and I recommend you head over to the FAQ's on the right.

That being said, the great thing about wet-shaving (i.e. using a brush and soap ISO gel) is that it gets your beard to actually stand up so the grain is of less hindrance. Notice I said "less" hindrance; grain is still important and relevant. So, you're on the right track if you start with a good kit that includes brush, soap and razor.

Now, on to Safety Razor vs Straight Razor debate, and trust me, it is a debate with both sides very vehemently and stringently for their side. However, and this is my $0.02, as you're a N00B, you should probably consider a Double Edge Safety Razor. The reason I suggest this is because there will be fewer differences between a DE and a cartridge (which is what you're using if you're not using a straight or safety razor). You can find lots of inexpensive ones, but this is definitely an area where you get what you pay for.

The problem with starting with a straight is that you have to worry about a lot more, e.g. blade maintenance, sight lines (it's a straight blade and your hand will be in your line of sight), blade types, and a whole slew of other things. Most people (who use them for a while and get the feel of them) end up preferring straights to DEs, but there is a severe learning curve with the straight.

So, here are a few recommendations for beginner sets. Very reasonably priced so if you give it a shot and decide it's not something you're into very much, you won't be out a lot of cash:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001A3HPT0

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001AKFXN8

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0038KA5RC (These can be broken in half to make two blades for a straight.)

u/sharkd · 1 pointr/AskReddit

I have one of these.
Works great. Blades cost $1.50 for a ten pack and my face doesn't breakout any more and I don't have any ingrown hairs. I couldn't begin to tell you how much money I've saved.

u/chuckley · 1 pointr/wicked_edge

The Parker 91R Super Heavyweight Double Edge Safety Razor.link I would suggest being careful with yours. A number of other people have had issues with the chrome coating on the 91R, I can't speak for the 99. The treads tend to snap too. Apparently Parkers aren't cheap razors, they are just made cheaply.

u/JerrMe · 1 pointr/wicked_edge

This is the blade I ordered. The reviews seem to give it high regard.

u/redtonks · 1 pointr/BuyItForLife

This brings up an interesting point in discussion. So, I bought a lifetime supply of blades from Costco over two years - every time we made it up to the one in the city, I'd buy them because they are quite expensive otherwise here in Australia. This resulted in a tiny drawer full of blades I have very slowly worked my way through.

I justified to myself that taking up the one small (really, it was quite small) drawer was fine and I didn't need to feel bad about the space usage since I saved money.

Then after five years in our apartment, we moved. That meant I had to box up my still half full drawer to move them. Then I had to make room for them and the other pack I found stuffed in another drawer because I'd ran out of room and forgotten it.

The physical burden went from one drawer to moving it, finding a new home, the mental space it took up and the inevitable land waste from the razers. It wasn't just the physical space that mattered. And in our small apartment that was just one more thing I had to stress about moving.

BIFL for me isn't about just the physical space. It's about the life I choose being effective for me in the immediate present, the less obvious present (my landfill footprint and how much goes into my garbage and recycling that doesn't even need to be there in the first place if I choose not to), and the future of my life that will inevitably leave its mark on my child.

One really good item replaces all of that and more for me it means I can live in a place with less storage because I don't need it. Less to clean up, organise, fix or replace. Because replacing still happens and is a little mental pocket I have to care for. My mental burden is less for every item I choose to not store.

I swapped to this and it's great. https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B001AKFXN8/ref=ox_sc_saved_image_9?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=A262S395NXGG8Z

I'm still working on that blade pile too though. Ugh.

u/proraso · 1 pointr/wicked_edge

Well, here's something I found on amazon:

http://www.amazon.com/Weishi-9306-F-Twist-Double-Safety/dp/B001D4Z87W/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1396061758&sr=8-1&keywords=weishi+razor

It's super similar, and it's 10 bucks (not sure what the shipping will be). For a brass razor, that's not half bad, and this looks like the exact same thing.

I know /u/betelgeux said it's similar but not the same. That being said, even if it isn't the same, from what I can see it looks really damn close.

u/robindownes · 1 pointr/wicked_edge

It's a re-branded Weishi. I have used the exact model for 3 years now, and get a decent shave out of it. Perfect piece to step into DE shaving. Highly recommend doing some research on soaps, and picking up a sampler pack of blades to see what is going to fit your routine best.

u/TallBobbyB · 1 pointr/bicycletouring

I came to recommend the same thing. Keep things low tech and low electricity.

You can get much cheaper options for shaving. $10 Omega Synthetic shaving brush that will hold up to travel better than a nice badger/boar brush. $12 Weishi twist to open razor that has less parts to deal with than the Merkur (twist to open versus 2 pieces that come apart). And if you're a weight weenie, get a shave soap puck that can work as a body soap too. Wash your body, then hit the brush on the puck, lather your face, and shave.

For beard trim, use some scissors. For nose/ear trim grab one of these. The DE blades are normally 15-20 cents a piece and you can normally get a few shaves out of each blade.

That should be a nice grooming kit that does not require any power and really should last you for the rest of your life if you take care of it.

u/thehollowaytape · 1 pointr/shaving

Looks like a Weishi to me.

u/son_of_iron_horse · 1 pointr/wicked_edge

A safety razor(open comb or slant) or a straight razor would do well with your curly hair.

Just make sure to shave after you shower or do a good prep. Also start using "old school" soap, be it in a puck or a tube or a tub, it'll be better for you skin rather than the stuff that comes in a can.

It gets the hair nice and soft and loose(relatively) so you can slash away at it.

For a slant, get a merkur 39/37 or if you go with an open comb, get a fatip grande

u/Engineered_Shave · 1 pointr/wicked_edge

I have 3 slants in rotation currently:

Ikon X3 slant [head only]: https://www.ikonrazors.com/shop/ikon-heads/x3-slant-head/

This is very mild with very little blade feel. Very forgiving, but not quite a BBS shave. Since I have sensitive skin, this works well in the neck region when I am shaving later in the week.

Merkur 39c slant aka "Sledgehammer": https://www.amazon.com/MERKUR-Slant-MK-39C-Double-Safety/dp/B002CLH5MG

This 2-piece razor model has both a serrated safety bar and top cap, and tends to be on the more aggressive side. You will get a closer shave with this at the expense of some irritation and/or nicks if you are not careful. If you have tougher skin, this is the way to go. Care is suggested if you are using a sharper blade [Nacet, Bic, Feather, etc.]

If you want a cheaper version of this, you can get the RazoRock German 37 Slant. https://www.italianbarber.com/products/razorock-german-37-slant-razor-torsionshobel It's the same as Merkur 37c but cheaper. Blade alignment is an issue you have to watch for, however.

GBS Heavy Duty slant razor: https://www.amazon.com/Heavy-Slant-Safety-Razor-Protective/dp/B07DDPP1MK/

This 3-piece is rather cheap but it is a copy / knockoff of the discontinued RazoRock Stealth Slant. This razor is in between both of the above in terms of aggressiveness and and mildness. I get a decent BBS shave AtG with minimal irritation, and this is currently my favorite. It's cheap to buy but the downside is it is cheap Chinese zamak metal, so don't drop it.

I'll grab the Wunderbar razor a bit later on and let you know. Did you read the review thereof earlier?

u/Baron_Von_D · 1 pointr/NoStupidQuestions

I generally replace them when they start to feel dull or uncomfortable, which is like a week or two if I am shaving often.
I also use a safety razor and feather blades (which are stupid sharp). They last a lot longer then disposable and are cheaper.

u/Ronthebear01 · 1 pointr/wicked_edge

I can’t help but wonder if your issue is the blade you’re using. I live in the Midwest and humidity is usually in the 90s all summer. My bathroom is also extra humid because it needs a new vent fan. I leave my razor assembled between shaves, and I’ve never seen rust on it. I use Astra platinum coated blades . Maybe the platinum coating prevents the rust? I’ve also used Feather Blades which are coated as well with the same results.

u/DrDougExeter · 1 pointr/Anticonsumption

Safety razor, badger-hair brush, sandalwood soap...the setup costs you around 100 bucks to get nice fancy stuff, you can get buy on probably half that and get the same out of it though. Either way, you'll save hand over fist compared to buying that bullshit from Gillete.

Feather blades are quite possibly the best you can buy, and you get em for 50 cents a piece.

Fuck Gillete and all of their nonsense, shave like a man.

u/TheMusiKid · 1 pointr/SkincareAddiction

Hey all, just started with the whole skincare deal after about 3 years of annoying (albeit very mild compared to some people's) acne. I'm very happy I found this sub, but I'm still a little bit daunted by it (I have so many questions!).

My main questions are regarding order of operations :D. I am very fair-skinned male with fast-growing facial hair (which I hate), and I get consistent cystic(?) acne on my cheeks/jawline. I also get frequent blackheads between my eyebrows (above and on my nose). My skin is usually pretty dry but I've been starting to use moisturizer. I also have acne scars which are dark, but not that bad.

Anyway, here are my questions:

Question 1: If I shave in the shower, should I be doing it before or after I cleanse/exfoliate?

Question 2: Should I be using a shaving cream if I shave in the shower? What about when I'm not shaving in the shower?

Question 3: Should I be using an astringent/toner? If so, when would I use that?

My Products (let me know if I have a bad one please):

  1. Cleanser: Neutrogina All-in-1 Acne Control Scrub
  2. Exfoliator: Clinique Exfoliating Scrub
  3. Astringent: Equate Astringent for Sensitive Skin
  4. Acne Treatment: Clearasil Acne Treatment Cream
  5. Moisturizer: Neutrogena Oil-Free Moisture (Combination Skin)
  6. Sunscreen: Neutrogena Clear Face Sunscreen - SPF 30
  7. Razor: Schick Hydro 5-Blade
  8. Shaving Cream: Schick Hydro Shave Gel

Thanks a bunch guys/gals for looking this over - I appreciate it.
u/Seven65 · 1 pointr/sex

If you still want to shave try:

http://www.amazon.com/Schick-Hydro-5-Blade-Razor/dp/B003BVINQI
I have tried a few razors and found this the best, my wife says it's also better than the ladies version.

And use conditioner instead of shaving cream, it's more viscous and is less likely to cause irritation.

Shave with the grain the first few times you shave to make sure there is no irritation. From there start with going with the grain and then perpendicular to the grain afterwards. If there is still no irritation after doing that consistently, try going against the grain as a third step for extra smoothness.

PRO:

  • lama molto curva, delicatissima
  • peso perfetto
  • i peli scorrono e non rimangono incastrati

    CONTRO:

  • manico troppo liscio

I'm still trying to decide which blade is best for me. I bought this back in august. I don't shave often. Just recently started using the ones from this order. I'm good for next year and a half I think.

u/ogolee · 1 pointr/wicked_edge

Well, let's see...

  • Prep - While I don't do a stand-alone pre-shave face wash, I do use a glycerin soap in the shower immediately prior to shaving. It's not MRGLO, and it does get rinsed and dried before shaving. After the shower, I splash with hot water and leave it wet as I make my lather.
  • Blade angle/pressure - I think I'm pretty conscientious about the angle and pressure. Usually I start with the cap against my skin and rotate slightly until i get blade contact. I try to use as close to no pressure as possible. There are a couple of spots that are tricky, and I do sometimes catch myself scraping a bit.
  • Beard grain - I've got a pretty good handle on that. After switching to a DE, I spent so much time just feeling my face and neck marveling at the difference in texture from past shaves. For the most part, the grain runs downward with the exception of my neck, which runs to the right. I do WTG, XTG, ATG on my cheeks, chin and upper lip and get a wonderful BBS finish. On my neck, I just can't seem to get it. I get the best results with an XTG pass in each direction, with a couple more passes rotating closer to ATG each time. I can't manage to go ATG (Rt to Lt) on my neck without nicks and burning.
  • Lather - I get pretty good lather: nice firm peaks in the bowl, fully opaque coverage on my face, brushed on in nice tight circles. I thought I had good lather when I was using the VDH soap I got starting out, but a new puck of TOBS really opened my eyes on that.
  • Blades - I'm still working though my original sample pack. There are a couple of losers like the Trig I mentioned above. So far, I get the best results from the Astra Platinum, Feather and Gillette Goals.
  • Post-shave - Prior to my latest purchases, I finished with a splash of witch hazel. I've now acquired and use an alum block, rubbed over the skin while still wet from rinsing. I let that sit while I brush my teeth, then splash with water, pat dry and rub on a little Pinaud Clubman.

For the most part, I don't really get much razor burn unless I try to hard for BBS on my neck. I just can't seem to get good results there. The Fusion experiment the other night did give me a burn, but that's obviously a result of the dry scrub. I don't plan on returning to cartridge shaves, but I am frustrated that the cartridge was able to get me BBS on my neck where I've failed so far with the DE.
u/pezhore · 1 pointr/wicked_edge

Seriously, take a look at Leisureguy's book. It'll help you decide if wet shaving is for you (it's not for everyone).

Bought/read his book?

Good! Now go out and buy some things.

If you're one to go off the beaten path, look on ebay for vintage Gillette razors or check out your local antique shops. You should be able to get a "vintage" razor for between $5-$15 if you look hard enough.

Next get yourself a good, yet cheaper brush, a blade sampler pack, some soap and/or shaving cream, and an alum block. Have a Bath & Body Works nearby? Pick up this.

At this point, going for a pricey brush/soap doesn't make as much sense, IMO - you're just testing the waters here. There will be plenty of time later to buy a fancier brush (*cough*). The trick here will be to see if you like it more than using a multi-blade cartridge/electric razor.

Cheers, and good luck!

u/gregermeister · 1 pointr/Frugal

As someone who just switched from cartridge razors about a month ago:

>The first is it takes a lot more skill and effort to use the safety razor.

I couldn't disagree more. I was terrified at first, and was almost shocked at how easy it was to pick up. I nicked myself once, the very first time - and haven't seriously since. And really, that's why god invented styptic pencils.

>With the safety I might be able to shave the time down to 15 but it's still with much greater effort.

...I don't know how you're shaving that it takes you 15 minutes. I mean, if you're using a brush and everything - yeah, probably - but I don't currently have the money to invest in one, so I've been using regular old shaving cream from a can (I know, blasphemy. I'm sure I'll switch eventually - but seriously, it works just fine.)
You have to make shorter strokes than you would with a cartridge razor, but that's it. It takes maybe a minute longer - but not significantly so, or I wouldn't do it. ~5-7 minutes, max.

>Third thing is cutting yourself is more common but it's not just easier to do, you can also actually leave a scar if you haphazardly use it on your face or rush.

Again, I was terrified of this, and find this to be incredibly misleading. You can nick yourself, but you honestly would have to try pretty damn hard to cut yourself any worse than you could with a cartridge razor. Maybe if you, like, sliced it horizontally across your cheek or something, but why would you do that?

In addition, while it does have a higher intro price - from that point on, your blades are dirt cheap. I mean, seriously cheap. Like, 100 blades for ~$15 cheap, though when first starting, you should spend a little more and get a variety pack to see what blades work best for you. Even still, it pays for itself inside a month or two.

For anyone looking to switch - this is the one /r/wicked_edge recommended me, and I've loved it so far. I'd never switch back, because I honestly haven't found a single downside. Blades are cheap, shaving is quick and close, and most importantly to me - my face doesn't constantly hurt anymore. If you're prone to razor burn, a safety razor will change your life.

Yes, I would say it is unranked. Look at this listing that shows the beauty category ranking and the category specific ranking.

u/LearnedButt · 1 pointr/AskMen

This. 1 good blade is far superior to multiple blades. You have to pay attention to the angle, but it's less irritation.

For the balls especially, and for light hair growth on your face and neck, I would look for a very mild razor (as opposed to aggressive, explanation HERE). If you have the cash to throw down, the king of mild razors is the Feather AS D2 for $175, but a good budget option would be the Dorco PL602 at $10. As with anything in life, you get what you pay for. The Dorco is cheap plastic and the Feather is jewelry grade stainless steel.

You may need to get different blades than the ones that go with the Dorco, but blades are $0.10-0.33, so it's not a huge cost.

u/bengye · 1 pointr/BuyItForLife

Safety Razor Handle: Use either a $16 Feather 800-1B (high-quality japanese plastic and metal) or, when you are ready to buy the BIFL version, the $165 Feather AS-D2 (stainless steel)

If you are springing for the AS-D2, you might want to consider getting the AS-D2S, which comes with a minimalist stand, although I couldn't find a link to purchase, I'm sure you can find it somewhere if you dig around a little.

Blades: This is easy, you just buy the $21 100 pack, which should last you around 2 years if you shave daily and change your blade weekly.

Shave Oil: I use Somerset's by Henley on Thames. I found it at a cheap drug store and it turns out it works great, most oils are good though, once you learn to supplement your shave with a couple splashes of water to keep the moisture levels up! For the Somerset's, I go with the extra sensitive version, you can get a bottle that will last you a couple years for $25 for 1.3 oz or if you want to start with a smaller bottle, the 0.5 oz. is $10, so you don't really even save if you get the bigger bottle, which I just realized while typing this out

And for the salicylic acid treatments, I use a face soap, shampoo, and face lotion with 2% of the acid in it, but the main treatment is really using these pads after I wash my face, letting it dry, then rinsing my face and applying lotion.

Fair point. What I'm looking at is a interesting approximation -[feather ss] (http://www.amazon.com/dp/B0060QYUP4/ref=cm_sw_r_udp_awd_OcS4tb06J5CMQ)

If you want a straight razor, Japanese or American style (straight or folding), that you don't have to worry about honing or stropping, Feather makes them with disposable blades:

it's perfect for edge work. i shape the neck-line of my beard with it, too. i'd say, though, i've never been able to work out why this one is so much less expensive than this one.

I would heavily suggest buying a sampler pack like this. Everyone has different reactions to different blades. I have my favorite but that may not be the same as someone else's. Personally I hate Derby and like the Astra Platinum.

u/Nebakanezzer · 1 pointr/wicked_edge

like this?

this also seems a lot more realistic for a stand.

u/MadWombat · 1 pointr/wicked_edge

For a sample pack of razors Amazon is your friend (provided you are in some part of the world where Amazon delivers). Here is one pack and you can find more if you just do a search for "razor blade sampler".

u/5hameless · 1 pointr/wicked_edge

I thought it was plenty sturdy when using it. My biggest problem with it was my lack of experience holding and positioning the razor itself, but I think it would be an issue with any straight I pick up right now. Here is the actual listing I ordered from. The picture has the green holder, but it comes with a red and two black (one black is combed). It also came with two long blades and a normal DE blade. This is the razor sampler I got with it. I can't comment much, other than they're all there and were packaged well.

u/PilotTim · 1 pointr/wicked_edge

Thank you, yes I also purchased this. I think one razor should be enough to get a feel of the brand to see if I like it.

>Its so much cheaper.

It's not really. You think it is, because that's what you've read online and in shaving forums. You're not the first person to drink the kool-aid and unfortunately you won't be the last.

Gilette charges $4 for a Fusion Pro-Gilde. The average man gets 7 shaves out of a cart easily. Is $4 a week going to affect your financial well-being?

And that's for the top.of.the.line Gillette carts. You can also get generic Trac II/Atra blades for about 17c per blade.

So no, DE shaving is not much cheaper.

u/lopsided_louche · 1 pointr/wicked_edge

DE shaving is really only cheaper than shaving with the latest carts like the Fusion and Mach 3. You can buy 100 Personna Trac II/Atra carts for $17. Cheaper than 100 Feathers and only slightly more than say, 100 Astras.

u/wordjedi · 1 pointr/MGTOW

The only way to spend $1000 a year on shaving is to buy tiny quantities of name brand blades. And then have a very coarse beard that dulls the blades fast?

You don't have to have to go Mad Men on retro shaving gear. Just get a jumbo pack of generic blades and you're set for many months or years. They sell generic handles for them too.

u/landofbunnies · 1 pointr/wicked_edge

Gillette Vector + 100 well-reviewed pivoting blades. Less than $20 and you're set for a year, considering you get two or three shaves per cartridge. My go-to travel setup. I hate checking bags.

u/nevertoomany · 1 pointr/wicked_edge

I see you mention broke college student looking for a long and heavy razor...why not take a look at the Utopia? Seems to be fairly well reviewed and for the price you can't go wrong. Worst case you can re-use the long heavy handle on another head you do like later...

The Parker and the Sanguine are really light. The CS-102 is made with a few other brand names but has a much heavier body that feels much more solid. I use Feathers and absolutely love to shave with the CS-102. I am looking forward to trying out a few other brands.

I picked up a Van Der Haagen razor for ~20 for my first razor. It worked decently for a beginner, I've used it for eight months.

As an option, I'd recommend this kit as a starter, it looks to be the exact same razor with a couple extras for the same price I paid for just the razor from Target.

I just recently picked up a Merkur Futur adjustable, figuring that I've done this for eight months and convinced i'll stick with it, so I upgraded to a better razor. I'm still getting used to it's new heft.

then you just need a brush and soap, and an aftershave lotion or balm is also recommended.

Other accessories that can help:

small bowl or mug for lathering, depending on the type of soap you use,

a small alum block for nicks and post shave irritation (make sure it is Potassium Alum, not ammonium, but some people use witch hazel instead due to irritation)

I also picked up the Van Der haagen shave set on deep discount ($4). The soap was trash, but the brush works decent and the bowl was a bowl, but a bit small.

You could try a sample pack with different kinds of blades. They are pretty cheap and you can find out which ones you prefer.

u/dry_zooplankton · 1 pointr/ftm

Thanks dude! I'm just super into skincare and have a tendency to fall down internet research rabbit holes hahaha. I bought this safety razor like two and a half years ago & I think it's a super great one to start with. Some people recommend using different blades than the ones that come with it, but it seems like more of an upgrade than a necessity. When you do need to buy more blades though, most people recommend trying a sampler set to figure out which brand of blades you like best. If you really feel like splurging you could go for a full set like this one (although tbh this might be a pretty good deal cost-per-item wise).

Shaving with a safety razor for the first time is definitely kind of harrowing, although I found that because I was super nervous I went real slowly & carefully, and consequently didn't have any problems. Just make sure you don't start with a setup that's described as "aggressive," since that indicates more of the blade is exposed & can cause irritation and more nicks/cuts if you don't know what you're doing. There are a lot of great tutorials on youtube or even in the reviews on the razor I linked here to help get you started!

I found it on Amazon. I'm impatient and at less than $20 it was worth the premium price for 2 day shipping if you're Prime. I was pleasantly surprised with the build quality and function. First full head shave and facial shave went without issue and drew no blood. I settled in at #4 on the face and #6 on the head with a feather blade. So far the Qshave Futur clone is a winner for the cost.

https://www.amazon.com/Quality-Adjustable-Double-Classic-Titanium/dp/B06XGVRQKP/ref=sr_1_1_a_it?ie=UTF8&qid=1496229372&sr=8-1&keywords=qshave&th=1

u/porschekid11 · 1 pointr/wicked_edge

i would check out the QShave adjustable razor if you are on a budget. it is a copy of the Merker Futur and comes with a lot of strong reviews on this sub. Amazon sells it for $20 or you can get for less from AliExpress and wait 2 weeks for shipping from China.

Blades samplers are the best suggestion that people recently gave me so try as many blades as you can. Consider soap samples too from Maggards

Good luck!

u/TurkeyHotdog · 1 pointr/BuyItForLife

Don't buy a Futur, get one of these QShave knockoff razors for much cheaper. They're just as good (I've had both, and I still have the QShave), and if you're going to spend $70 on a razor there are MUCH better ones for that price than a Futur.

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B06XGVRQKP/

The Futur is a cool razor, but with that giant head it's less convenient to use for some than razors that have a "normal" sized head.

u/LonelyNixon · 0 pointsr/Frugal

I don't mean to insult you, but you sound like someone with a thin beard. You use bargain brand blades and you can shave in under 10 minutes using your safety razor with just cream for lubrication. I remember when I was 12, I had patchy long, uneven side burns that went down most of my face. I used to shave with nothing but water and a disposable bic blade. Eventually when I was 13 I tried doing what I always did on my slightly thicker not as whispy and thicker and less patchy facial hair and I learned that I needed water.

I use feather blades because everything else I used was way too damn dull to cut through my beard and the multiple strokes lead to really long times in the bathroom shaving or irritation, razor burn, and blood(merkurs weren't so bad, but I tried shaving with an astra platinum like I did one of my feathers and jesus did I regret it). I am careful and I work closely but my hairs are not only thick but they are tricky. Shaving my face is like mowing a lawn full of dandilions. You think you ran them over but then you look behind you and they just pop right up again forcing you to come at them again. My tricky beard is actually tamed fairly easily with a fresh shick quatro titanium, but fresh was just 2 or 3 shaves so in a week I'd be out of it and recharge packs are about $10 for four so I'd keep the blades long after the recommended use time. The safety razor ravers made me expect something totally different. I never got this mythical closer shave, I already got about as close as I currently get with my feathers with my old shick quatro, but what I did find was that getting that same level of closeness took more time and effort to achieve on my face because these things require way more precision.

As for the scars, I've noticed a lot more ice pick marking than before. These things do cut a little deeper than modern razors especially if you have minute amounts of acne. I don't cut myself anymore than I did with my old razor and it's usually not spots that bleed that get this unique scaring. I can't say I know what it is, but I never had icepick marks on some parts of my face that have them now. Seeing as how I've been shaving my entire teenage life, I made it through the major acne years pretty unscathed I find it odd that at 22 I'm seeing some scaring and the only change I've made is the blade.

As for the price again, yes it is a lot more frugal to use, that is why I use it and I've even gotten friends into it, but the fact of the matter is nobody seems to get into the short comings of safety razors when they recommend it. Personally I need to use feathers because the cheaper ones tend to not be sharp enough for my beard and unfortunately that brings the price at a still impressive but much less so 30 for $15.45. Still I love it because I don't have to worry about saving it I can just throw the blade out when it gets dull and it's still cheaper than the quatro by a significant margin. With that said though someone needs to point out that the grass isn't really much greener over on the safety razor side of the fence, it's just cheaper.

u/yvva · 0 pointsr/SkincareAddiction

I use this and the top pulls back so you can get in the bits. Just stick a leg up on the bathtub and be careful.

u/qualiaqq · 0 pointsr/wicked_edge

I know right! This almost pisses me off that someone might see this and think they cost that much. It says per cart, but I'm thinking cart is not a pack of razors, but a razor cartridge (which doesn't make sense in the case of the safety razors).

I haven't looked the price of safety razors vs cartridges in a while, but on amazon the best seller cartridges vs my favorite safety razors comes out to $2.83/razor vs $0.09/razor.

For a true beginner i would recommend using a Dovo Shavette because it doesnt need to be sharpened you can just replace the blades and the lack of ability to seriously mame yourself
