I know that Beyerdynamic make single-sided headphones. Are you looking for something like the DT252? They are the single ear version of the DT250 which I thought was good (but I have not tested the 252). Then there is the single sided version of the DT100, the DT102. Beware, these are studio monitors so they might sound neutral, almost analytical and dry.

Two that come to mind are the BeyerDynamic C1Pro or Custom Studio or the AKG K553mkII

The 553mkIII is slowly starting to show up in western markets, but I haven't come across any reviews for them yet, so I don't know what changes were made.

There's also the MSR7. They're nice for the price, but I find their sharpness too fatiguing for gaming beyond an hour or two.

u/CreaminFreeman · 5 pointsr/battlestations

It's also worth considering the Audio-Technica ATH-AD900x if you're into positional accuracy when playing games. I invested in the old AD700's back in the day and have never once been disappointed.

You might do a deep dive into /r/headphones and you could ask in /r/headphoneadvice — I think what they’ll tell you is that if you were to buy a “gaming headset” with your $300 budget, you end up sacrificing some of your potential sound quality in order to get that microphone attached.

Whereas you can buy a really nice pair of headphones and then spend $30 or less on a V-Moda BoomPro Mic (or something like it) which basically acts as the cord between your headphones and headphone jack and has a flexible boom mic, a volume dial, and a mute switch. There’s another one that you can stick to the side of one of the headphones either with a magnet or sticky too, depending on the type of headphones you buy and what you prefer.

I bought a pair of Fidelio X2/HR headphones that cost $325 just over a year ago, but you can get them for $150 now. Really comfortable band that operates sort of like ski goggles so it doesn’t squish your head, and will fit a fucking watermelon if it needs to. I bought them because I was looking for a “unicorn” that I could wear for movies, games, TV, and music. They sound fantastic, though they’re even better when you plug them into an amp/DAC (I plug them into my home theater receiver’s headphone out jack and crank it up).

Another really highly recommended one are these Sennheiser HD600 Open Back Headphones for $300 from Amazon Prime right now.

Or there’s these BeyerDynamic DT 770 Pro Studio Monitor Headphones that come with an Antlion ModMic so you don’t have to buy the microphone separately, and they’re $189 from Amazon right now, and you could spend the remainder of the $300 on a dedicated headphone amp/DAC that will boost the volume/bass/output and help you get the most from them.

Another popular recommendation is a more traditional gaming headset — the Arctis Steel Series Pro + Game DAC for only $175 — the DAC boosts the headphones and provides DTS:X Headphone (for virtual surround sound). It’s the wired edition, but you could pay more for a wireless if you want.

Anyhow, maybe this will be helpful and give you a couple ideas, but they should help you more in /r/headphone advice if you tell them your budget and what you’re trying to do and what you’re looking for. Read the sidebar so you know the posting format so more people will respond. Hope you enjoy whatever you get! A home theater system is worth saving up for, and eventually you can turn a 5.1 system into a Dolby Atmos system by adding two height channels (so long as you invest in a receiver that is Atmos capable from the start). Come the PS5, I’m hopeful they’ll support it and DTS:X as the XBOX One does now, but they’re also working on their own 3D sound format. Go to a home theater store and have them demo DolbyAtmos for you (especially on a game if possible) and you’ll see how much it adds. You can get a decent home theater system for far cheaper than you used to be able to, but it’s worth it to save up the money and buy something you’re really gonna be proud to own for at least 5-10 years if not longer.

I actually did a fair bit of research on this a few months ago, specifically for bass heavy trap music. If you're looking to spend a little bit more and really get quality (although for real audiophiles this price/performance is considered 'midrange' I guess) you should look at the Shure SE215s - https://www.amazon.com/Shure-SE215-CL-Isolating-Earphones-Isolation/dp/B00FYZZ4PW

They are an over the ear type, which was a little hard to get used to for myself, but quickly grew into it. Never looked back

Seems legit.

A system of four Rx packs and a Tx for less than a single PSM300 pack? I suspect you already know the answer.

u/Domovoi0ng · 3 pointsr/pcmasterrace

Everybody can experience audiophilia, not like audiophiles have super special fairy ears. (yes some people are more sensitive tho) You just need to experience it. Difference between 192 and 320 is actually quite a lot, depending on the music. Some songs won't make any difference because they're not that complex. Yes the bottleneck is real tho.

Doesn't have to be expensive. Plenty of good entry level stuff. The ever popular ath m40x, some good USB dacs, 150$ is more than enough for a huge leap in audio quality from your everyday fare. Gaming headphones are 90% a scam.

So yes, most people CAN.

bro /u/OC2k16 /(\^_\^)/

(My setup rn is akg 7xx cans 300$ and Fiio e10k dac 100$ . Saved for a while for this! Shits expensive in india.)

I just recently got these and I love them (AKG K 240)

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B077FFCPVR/

I actually find myself pulling them off of my receiver and using them on my computer. They're light weight, comfortable and sound fantastic and they're affordablish

u/Mad_Economist · 2 pointsr/CabaloftheBuildsmiths

Hmm, not a lot to spend on speakers and headphones. Shooting from the hip, around that budget, I'd probably go one of two directions:

A pair of reasonable-ish entry-level speakers - something in the vein of the Micca [MB42] (https://www.amazon.com/Micca-PB42X-Powered-Bookshelf-Speakers/dp/B009IUIV4A) (which is passive, and so requires an amplifier, which can be [pretty cheap for a very budget option] (https://www.amazon.com/Lepy-LP-2020A-Class-D-Digital-Amplifier/dp/B01FZKA28Y/ref=sr_1_7?keywords=class+t+amplifier&qid=1573193876&s=electronics&sr=1-7))/[PB42X] (https://www.amazon.com/Micca-PB42X-Powered-Bookshelf-Speakers/dp/B00NXAEPDC) (which is powered and so requires no amplifier) - which will run something a little north of $100 unless you're down to buy used, plus a reasonable lower mid end closed headphone ([NVX's branding of the Yoga CD880] (https://www.amazon.com/NVX-Over-Ear-Headphones-ComfortMax-XPT100/dp/B0093PVTPS) is a pick I like a fair bit). These speakers will be pretty alright, albeit imperfect to be sure, and there are a few decent-to-good closed-back options in the ~$100 range.

Alternatively, if speaker quality is literally of no importance, you could go for something in the budget range of those Logitechs - there really are absolutely not options that cheap that are any good at all, but if you only use speakers to occasionally listen to youtube videos, it might be acceptable. That would leave more budget to allocate to the headphone side of things, where you'd have options like [AKG's] (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=svAmJheRxAg) K371, NAD'S HP50,or on the used side of the street [AKG's] (https://www.rtings.com/headphones/reviews/akg/n700nc-wireless) N700NC, which are quite robust options in the closed-back world (particularly, in my opinion, the N700NC, which sounds fantastic to my ears with its digital signal processing active, and has quite good noise cancelling as well).

It's a bit of a tight squeeze regardless - if you're down with used gear, you can get a bit more for your dollar, but at very low price points you're in a space where shipping costs may dwarf savings, so even that might not help much, outside of headphones (which don't cost much to ship, and have a quite vibrant used market).

If you'd like more information or options, just let me know - I've thrown some links in above, but I'm pretty short of time today, so I figured I'd offer what I had from the top of my head rather than leaving you waiting.

u/motionglitch · 2 pointsr/pcmasterrace

The best 'Headset' is an actual headphone with a separate mic

Amazon has a bundle right now. M40X + Modmic for 129$ or a M50x + Modmic for 169$

u/I3igAl · 2 pointsr/headphones

I Really enjoy my Beyer DT 770. I bought them when I needed isolation myself, and also when I couldn't disturb my wife in the same room. When I have the 770 on, my wife has to bump my chair or literally yell for me to get my attention. The 80ohm version has the best bass and is still low enough impedance that onboard audio can still push them to reasonable volume, although depending on how old your PC is I would recommend also getting a basic dac/amp.

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B071XKQQ57

If you need truly extreme isolation, the 770 also comes in a model that is made for drummers, with pleather pads instead of velour and some other material changes to increase isolation. I have no idea how they sound but they shouldnt be too much different than the normal 770.
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000F4KWQI

EDIT: forgot to talk about comfort. these things are very nice. I have a huge head and it was a struggle finding something that fit nicely, coming from gaming headsets. alot of things I tried fit my head but then my ears would be pinched, or the headband wasnt big enough. Beyers have a giant round opening and go fully around the ear, and plenty of adjustment size in the headband. I also wear glasses and these do not pinch hard on the temple or sound bad with the partially broken seal.

EDIT EDIT: also mention Custom One Pro / Custom One Studio. updated models that look different but supposedly sound the same. cant say never tried them, but coming with a detachable cable is nice (i modded my 770 for detachable)

u/Goatcruiser · 2 pointsr/ZReviews

I have heard very interesting things about the Somic Mh463s. They look to be decent neutral cans, with good build quality for the buck. Thinking about investing in a pair.

u/thepensivepoet · 2 pointsr/Guitar

Yes, with some systems you can tune multiple receivers (bodypacks) to the same transmitter but for a band you really don't want to operate that way because the transmitter is only going to be receiving one signal to send out so you'll all be sharing the exact same monitor mix. Your singer is going to want more of his vocals, you're going to want more of your guitar, the bass player is going to want to tune into Banana FM for all the hot chimpanzee beats, and the drummer's going to want way more click than all of you combined. No good.

To set up a whole band with a proper IEM system is going to be really expensive and this is really not the place to cut corners. Each system (transmitter + bodypack) from a solid name brand manufacturer is going to be somewhere around $500-800.

You can save some money by hooking the drummer up to a hard line connection through a cheaper headphone amp as there's no point to spend on wireless gear for someone who's going to be sitting down the whole time.

The headphones that come with those systems tend to be very cheap and, in my experience, directly responsible for people hating IEMs altogether. Cheap headphones will get really muddy in an IEM application where more expensive multi-driver headphones can handle a big messy live-band mix while maintaining the clarity you need to actually hear what the hell is going on. Good headphones are going to run at least an extra hundred dollars all the way up to $1000 for really good custom molded headphones.

All the individual rigs, plus upgraded headphones, plus a rack to transport them safely... you're looking at a few grand here at least for something solid. There are cheaper models of everything I've described and, sure, maybe you'll get lucky and stumble across a reliable set but for something you're trusting your entire show with I don't think you should go cheap chinesium.

And, yes, the in-ear monitor headphones are going to provide noise isolation to protect your hearing which is one of the primary benefits to going IEM in the first place.

What's your opinion on Audio Technica ATH-M50X? Here's a bundle with the latest modmic at a good price:

https://www.amazon.com/Technica-Professional-Headphone-Attachable-Microphone/dp/B073VYLPY5/

Here's a bundle with a DT 770 but the modmic is 4 instead of 5 (weaker magnet and worse performance?) and I'm unclear as to whether 250 ohm is a good or a bad thing (I have an Asus Hero IX motherboard).

https://www.amazon.com/Beyerdynamic-Headphone-Antlion-Attachable-Microphone/dp/B01N0EAJ3G/

Actually it's available at 80 ohm too. Which is best for performance given my situation?

u/lejazzvp · 1 pointr/Saxophonics

The problem is that whatever you use, you'll keep hearing your horn relatively loudly because of bone conduction. Mouthpiece vibrations are transmitted through your teeth, skull and into your inner ear. Deep, custom molded in-ear monitors will reduce this effect, but it will still be there.

For a relatively cheap solution, get a set of drummer's headphones like THESE or THESE.

However:

> I'd like to monitor the input to get a better idea of what I actually sound like, since obviously it sounds very different from what I think I sound like.

this won't really work anyways. A lot of information is lost when recording a saxophone. That's not only true for professional studio recordings (which use top of the line spaces with carefully controlled acoustics, and very expensive gear), but even more if you use a cheap mic in your home. I've had the opportunity to hear Chris Potter, Donny McCaslin and Ben Van Gelder up close, unaccompanied, and none of them sounded like how they do on tape.

If you want a more "true-to-life" recording of your horn, place the mic as far away from your horn as possible so it picks up a lot of room sound and resonance.

Budget: sub 100$

Source: PC, sometimes smartphone.

Requirements for isolation: prefer open, since they are more comfortable, but open to compromises.

Will you be using these Headphones in Public: no.

Preferred type of headphone: full size preferred

Preferred type of balance: balanced, but i think at this price point I'll take what sounds best.

Past headphones: Reloop RH 10. Liked them in terms of sound, but they turned out to be very fragile.

Preferred Music: EDM

Location: Ukraine, but the purchase itself will be probably within the US. Might look at the EU, if the deal is right, not familiar with the market though.

Potential headphones: shp9500(s), OB-1 (really nice price on this one on Amazon 50 bux only), ATH-M30x, AKG K 240, also cool deal for Sennheiser HD 200 PRO right now.

u/ajjjas · 1 pointr/headphones

I've been impressed by both the Westone UM10 Pro and the Shure SE215 in-ears. I think Shure's eartips are more comfortable, but the Westones sound better. Both can be EQ'd to get decent bass if you like, as well. the soundstage on the Westone is better, I'd say.

TASCAM TH02

Measures very well and if you really want to piss off some students you can go for the pink version from TEAC which is even cheaper.

You will be plugging these headphones into an expandable amplifier rack?

If you have some people who prefer to have one free ear, check out the Superlux HD-562 a rather audacious copy of the legendary Sennheiser HD25 which is the industry standard for most professional TV crews in the field.

u/inspectah_shrek · 1 pointr/DJs

If you want something similar to the ubiqutious Sennheiser HD-25's, a much cheaper alternative are the Superlux HD-562s. These are clones of the HD-25's so the design and sound are nearly identical, not a perfect copy but good enough for DJing. The best part is that they are only $30! I own a pair of these and I like them so far.

Some people like to buy the combo, DAC + AMP, the cheapest, yet very good, are Magini + Modi.

Recently, they released the new Audio-Technica ATH-M40x (2014 Version) - $99 on Amazon. People say that this is "the new M50x", because nowadays the price/performance of the m50x is getting lower (ATH raised the price), people say that performance and quality of this new one is very good. I myself am thinking of getting this M40x.

A bombastic deal for you would be this one, M40x (2014 Version) + FiiO E6 Portable AMP, then later you can get the DAC + AMP for your PC if you feel the need. Too bad I don't live in the US, and I'll be traviling only on JAN/2015, hope this deal continues, I'd get it instantly... =(

These are my daily driver headphones--they're not what I'd call ultra portable, but they do fold up, and the sound quality is quite good. They block sound, but there's no active cancellation.

They're over-ear though, which you may not like (but I do).

u/orielbean · 1 pointr/BuyItForLife

You might want in-ear headphones for gym stuff. I swear by my Shure ear monitors like these: https://www.amazon.com/Shure-SE215-CL-Isolating-Earphones-Isolation/dp/B00FYZZ4PW/

The triple-flange helps a lot for ear fit, and the in-ear are very good at passively blocking sound w/out messing with the audio profile. WAY more comfortable than over-ear as well. I've got an older pair that are 16 years old with weekly use & travel time, and they still hold up!!

u/churtchill · 1 pointr/headphones

Something like the Beyerdynamic DT102 then?

u/Fenghoang · 1 pointr/HeadphoneAdvice

Assuming you don't have an amp:

Closed - DT 770 Pro 80 ohm or AKG K553

Open - Fidelio X2HR

If you have a Guitar Center near you, they should have the DT 770 and K553 for you to demo. They also have the Audio Technica M50X, but I personally didn't like them. I think they're supposed to have the X2HR too, but my local location didn't have it available.

The X2HR and K553 are very easy to drive (also detachable/replaceable cables), and you should be okay with the DT 770 Pro 80 ohm even without an amp.

u/Vortax_Wyvern · 1 pointr/HeadphoneAdvice

> So what $500 headphone is superior to the bose/beats/sony?

Almost everyone ;)

There is not "best headphone", but "best headphone for your needs". For example, I like Neutral open back, but if you are going to use them in the bus or at your work (where you can annoy other people) then open backs are not the best choice. You'd also want something more portable than a full over the ears headphone, even if it's a bit more uncomfortable.

Full size over the ears, with closed back and very good sounding, could be the Beyerdynamic DT770 (heavily V-shaped), the Audio Technica ATH-A1000Z, or even the Monolith M1060C (but I wouldn't recommend those, I'd rather get Fostex T50rp or any of its mods -T60rp or Argon Mk3- if I were to dive into plannars).

But in small size, perhaps... 1more triple driver over ear. Great cans, with ceramic tweeters that blast crystal clear treble into your ears (if you like treble, those are great). More affordable are the Audio-Technica ATH-M60X, you cannot fold them, but they are cheaper and even if they are on-ears instead of over the ears, they are very comfortable.

The best case scenario is were you have several different headphones for several different task. I have 4 headphones: One Closed back to use in house and not being annoyed by the Tv (Sennheiser HD598Cs), two open backs (Sennheiser HD6XX and Fidelio X2) for music listening and gaming -one wamr and one V-shaped-) and one IEM (FLC8S) tunable, that I use for commuting.

Hope I could help you. Have a nice day! :)

u/D0PETHR0NE · 1 pointr/HeadphoneAdvice

Okay, I haven't listened to a lot of IEM's but I recently bought the Tin T2's and I'm loving those.

Small on-ears could be the 1More 1707, Audio Technica M60X. Though these are out of your price range.

The only really lightweight in your price range would be the Koss Porta Pro, where you can easily swap out the foam pads. There's also a bluetooth version available.

>There is no way in hell that a microphone attached to headphones is going to cost $20 more than the pair of headphones alone.

$20 is very understandable; I would be happy if it were just $20. Beyerdynamic wants over $100 more for their headset options of the DT-770 and DT-250; MMX 300 and DT-290 respectively.
