Have you tried a 3 jaw oil filter wrench? Has teeth and gets tighter the more force you put on it. Use with a 3/8 breaker bar for great results:

Sort of like this thing: https://www.amazon.com/EvZ-Filter-Wrench-Adjustable-Remover/dp/B07DRVGK4S/

If it's anything like my cartridge filter, get a filter wrench like this one. Don't use the strap type ones.

DO NOT BUY THIS ONE THOUGH! There's a 100% chance it will not fit on your car.

You should consider getting a fluted filter wrench for whatever size filter your bike uses. Like this, just make sure it's actually the right size for your bike. I had to get one for my VFR because there's no way to get a regular clamp-style filter wrench on it, and you can't get it off by hand because it's between the exhaust headers. It's annoying having to use a specialized tool that only does one thing and just sits around taking up space for the next 4,000 miles the bike does, but there's pretty much no other way to get the filter off and the new one on, besides maybe dropping the exhaust.

I remember taking the factory oil filter off my GFs Ninja 300. Note that I have been changing oil on my bike and cars for a looong time. The filter was so tight I couldn't remove it using anything. Here is what I suggest:

  1. Get this tool. The right size for your filter of course. The filter straps usually don't work for shit for truly stuck filters because they just end up slipping. With the wrench cap, you put it on and use a nice breaker bar and there is no way it ain't coming off. It's fun to use even when your filter is not stuck as it can help you get that filter off without removing the fairings with the use of ratchet extensions. You also have these and they auto-adjust to size which is cool (a buddy of mine swears by that tool) and that should technically also work if you start deforming the filter, so a plus for that tool although personally I have the fixed, non adjustable cap.
  2. Get the bottom fairings/belly pan off if you haven't yet. You can get the filter off through the hole in front but if the filter is stuck, the extra working space will allow you to attack at better angles.
  3. If you have the tool already, use a big enough pipe wrench. No way it is not coming off with one.
  4. As a last resort, large screwdriver and hammer. Hammer the screwdriver around the back of the filter (as to not damage the threads on the bike) all the way through both sides, like so. And then just twist. You can then also give the screwdriver light taps to get the filter unstuck. This one is a messy process, expect oil everywhere so prepare in advance.

And when you put on the fresh filter, make sure you lube the o-ring with oil and do not over-tighten!

Get a fluid evacuator plus two gallon jugs of synthetic, a 36mm socket, and a Mann oil filter and do the oil change yourself. You will save money after 2 oil changes.

It is easy as it can be.

I've always done my own oil changes, including my 2015 NX.... I believe Mobile1 makes Toyota / Lexus oils, but I'd just go to a Toyota or Lexus dealership... I found that the Toyota synthetic was actually cheaper than the buying Mobile1 synthetic anywhere else. Not sure whether the 2011 have the same oil filter setup as newer models, but they're not conventional oil filters either where the socket attachment is slightly different (http://www.amazon.ca/Astro-Pneumatic-Tool-Company-78521/dp/B00LH05Q88/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1450866056&sr=8-2&keywords=toyota+oil+filter)

Edmunds long term test Audi A3 hit a stump and destroyed the plastic pan to the tune of $745 in repairs. Had it been a steel pan I'm not sure how much the repairs would have been or what sort of damage there would have been.

That still wasn't enough to keep me from buying a 2015 Golf R with the same pan design. And there's even a tool designed to fit into that plug better than a screwdriver.

my dude

Good on your for getting in there though. Building confidence with this sort of stuff is what leads to doing little repairs here and there, and soon you'll be day dreaming about shopping sprees at harbor freight.

u/Qlanger · 3 pointsr/Justrolledintotheshop

This is the cheapest one I have found that actually works and does not break after the first use...

I have tried a couple others but they kept breaking. So get a large solid one like this, not the classic thin walled ones.

It's been 20 years so I'm not sure anymore, may have been this one.

Some thread here about it.

I've got one of these things. It's a great money saver.

The only thing I can't do are spark plugs, I have a stupid Lexus engine that has to be completely removed. :(

I use a pair of these as my main set of oil filter pliers, and something similar to this if a filter really wants to start some drama. Something like this socket type strap wrench pretty much always works as well, is cheap, and is easier to fit than the strap wrenches with the big plastic handles built in.

u/smedema · 1 pointr/mechanics

No. My bet is most kits will have 6mm to 19mm. Ateast those are common packages. The 32mm you will have to buy separate. I've been using a kit of the oil filter sockets I got off Amazon for years and they have held up well. You might be able to find just the socket you need but kits are pretty cheap and you can never have too many tools.

I've had good luck with the strap wrench and our cars but I'll probably get a tool for this to make it easier for my brother. Does this one look like it would work? I assume the hybrid has the same size cap as the normal ones. You can buy oil filter wrenches that look like this or this. Both work really well and most auto parts stores or Harbor Freight carry them. A large pair of channel locks work as well. The filter is already fucked, so don't be afraid to squeeze it into an oval shape to get a good bite on it.

The coolant line looks like a pre-heater for the intake manifold, where it runs coolant through the intake to make it heat up faster so that the engine can lean out (fuel injection doesn't have a choke, but does essentially the same thing when the engine is cold and that is richen the fuel mixture). Again, a foot or so of 3/8 or whatever size heater hose is only a few dollars at an auto parts store.

I use this. Good for tight spaces.
