My recollection was that, in the 80s, there was a significant price difference between the 5.25 and the 3.5 inch diskettes and disk drives. Having a 3 1/2 inch drive was a luxury.

In the typical Apple sorta way, they went with the more expensive option first. It wasn't until the 90s that the 3.5 floppy was widespread in the PC world.

Windows 3.1 was released in 1992 and could be had in 5.25 floppies.

Windows 95 only came in 3.5 floppies (and CDs.)

They are still selling these on Amazon:

u/Magnetar12358 · 6 pointsr/buildapcsales

You can even double your RAM with just one click.

That's supper sketchy.

"Disable your antivirus, run this program you got on the internet, then reboot your computer."
That's a great way to get a boot sector virus.

It's not worth it when a Windows 10 key will cost you the same as a trip to Starbucks.
https://www.amazon.ca/Win-Pro-Key-Code-Lifetime/dp/B07WSNBPQY
And if you don't trust it to be valid, Amazon has their own refund policy. And failing that, whatever credit card you used it on can do a charge back.
And since it's just a code, you don't have to download anything from anywhere sketchy. Just get the install file from Microsoft directly. They let anyone download it. You just need the key to install it.

Here let me price the 64 bit and 32 bit Windows 7 for you.

32 Bit $94.89 on Amazon

64 Bit $94.89 on Amazon

I've been using a 64 Bit OS for almost 4 years now, most developers have them. It is a trend for the future that has been going on for years and has been publicly available and affordable for 9 years. I'm sorry you feel cheated but maybe this is a sign that its time to upgrade, more and more games will start going 64 bit only in the future because of the memory it offers.

MSP here. This a basic server that we've used for small biz that require AD and basic file sharing. It supports BIOS based RAID (you could also buy a RAID controller if you want it though). Just pick up 3 more 1TB drives, and you could run RAID 4. If you are JUST using it for authentication and basic file sharing, RAID 1 with a second drive would suffice.

If you're seeking to update the Mac Mini Early 2005, the maximum OS X Version it can run is 10.5.8. Currently, the earliest version of OS X that Apple will sell is 10.6 Snow Leopard which is not compatible with your Mac Mini (unless you had an Early 2006 or newer).

Because Leopard 10.5.8 is the highest OS you can get to, you would be best to [purchase the disc from a reseller such as Amazon at this link] (http://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/B0012RAVRC/ref=dp_olp_0?ie=UTF8&condition=all)

It is important that you have at least 512MB of RAM installed (which it should have shipped with per these specs) and at least 9GB of Disk Space available for installing Leopard.

Once you have installed the OS, just update it to the latest version which can be found on the Apple website at this link.

Hope this helps and good luck with the upgrade!

How about getting an OEM Windows 7 Home Premium - English ISO online, install from that using your original OEM license key? That might work, if the license keys are not tied to a particular language (which I'm not sure).

Also, Ultimate upgrade is not $200. That's for Upgrading Xp/Vista to 7. This is what you need: Windows 7 Anytime Upgrade - Home Premium to Ultimate.

As I see it, if ISO thing doesn't work, you have two options (legally):

  1. Buy the Ultimate upgrade for ~$99
  2. Buy the OS X for $30 (additional charges up to thousands of dollars may apply though)

If you're paying less than about $100 USD for Windows then you are probably getting it from a sketchy source. That's just the nature of the beast. FYI Windows 7 is reaching End of Support in a few months meaning you will no longer receive fixes or security updates. That puts you at a much higher risk if you're connected to the internet. If your laptop supports it I would definitely recommend Windows 10 or even Linux.

Depends what form you get it in. Windows is usually offered in a physical form (USB or DVD) that you plug in and boot from to install, or you'll get a serial key and a link to download the files.

u/dwhite21787 · 2 pointsr/Ubuntu

You may have your reasons for buying that 32-bit, unsupported version of Ubuntu. If it was just a misunderstanding then I suggest you get this:

Also, any OS is only as secure as YOU make it.

u/wittyname5 · 2 pointsr/buildapc

Are you referring to this?

That's for upgrading it's not the full version which is what itchypelicans wants.

You probably don't need Windows 10 "Pro", regular windows 10 should do and will save you 80-100 bucks. but either is available as a USB drive so you can skip the Blu-Ray thing

I recently made the switch to PC, not sure I'll ever go back to MAC for a professional video editing machine. My machine is way faster and windows 10 isn't really that much different that Mac OS these days. The only thing you'll miss is prores exports, iMessage, and the small sleek form factor.

Good call leaving it open for more RAM i went with 64 and watch my task manager when I'm in after effects and it utilizes all of it.

I'm gonna go out on a limb and say that you should also look into motherboards that hold m.2 drives, which are faster than SSDs I got 2 500GB m.2 drives to put in it, one for my operating system, one for my working projects. and everything loads in an instant. Then some SATA drives for storage, which you can always get later or just use externals. This m.2 option will likely cost more though.

There are three options, dual boot ubuntu and Windows, boot ubuntu from flash drive, or install it and remove windows.

This is the guide I used to dual boot

Whichever way you choose you'll need to make (or buy) a usb with Ubuntu on it - amazon link if you wish to buy

Personally I would recommend booting from usb to to try it out, as it should be as simple as pressing f12 selecting boot from usb and following the instructions.

EDIT: as a side note, I removed Windows about a month after I dual booted it, as I never launched it once. I replaced photoshop with gimp, which was a slight downgrade (I believe video editing is a similar story), but all the other replacements I've found were significant improvements over their windows counterpart and they're all free!

Google Chrome is a HORRIBLE memory and storage hog. Get. Rid. Of. It. Get Firefox.

Maybe switch to Ubuntu. It is a much lighter OS without all of Windows' bloatware. You can either download it here or buy a DVD here. If you'd rather have a thumbdrive, you'll find one here. (Yes, the stars are low, but we bought one and it worked just fine.)

Or get a new computer. May not be the most cost efficient way but you won't regret it.

u/BiggzMcDaddz · 1 pointr/laptops

Kool that clears that up !

I can get a usb bootable flash with online activation code for £12 or say $20 on Amazon here in the uk.

The seller has replied saying the flash usb comes with a genuine code .

This is laptop I want to buy for my son

Yeah there is many different versions of windows. I understand that there is a 64 bit home.

What I meant that my Windows Pro is 64 bit. Not that a home version of 64 bit didn't exist.

Amazon is showing both the 64 bit and the 32 bit versions of Win7 Pro SP1 OEM as currently available. I think they'd be your best bet.

u/BahamutSalad · 1 pointr/techsupport

>Do you think it'd be worth the extra $70?

It's pretty much the same spec wise, when taking the RAM upgrade into account. As far as battery life, I dunno. The Acer will probably be a little bit better. From a broke college student point of view, not worth the money just for slightly better battery life, unless it's running out of juice in classes. Wikipedia says it ships with the same win7 starter OS.

Upgrading to Home Premium is $35. This isn't "bad" for your OS, no harm, no battle scars.

Enquire with Gateway and see if it can support 4GB. It shouldn't be an issue, but may be.

Can you elaborate on this a little more? Also, would this work?

Windows server downloads are technically evaluations, and as a buisness entity I'd put money on they can't apply to you.

But hey, if you want to shell out $700 for Windows Server licences I'm not gonna argue.

u/cyancynic · -1 pointsr/apple

>I haven't seen a dll error since Windows 2000. What is your problem?

Its not just dll errors. The whole POS is fucking chatty. Endless alerts like "windows has discovered new hardware! - searching for drivers" or "your computer may not be fully protected from viruses - quick write me a check!" Shit bubbles just float out of the tray constantly. stupid computer. STFU and let me get some work done I don't care that you have to go tinkle every 30 seconds!'

>Right, because OSX is sooo cheap, not to mention the yearly $100 subscription fee to get the new version...

You're hilarious in your cluelessness. Windows VISTA ultimate is $250+
http://www.amazon.com/Windows-Vista-Ultimate-with-SP1/dp/B0013O77GM

Leopard for the 5-user family pack is $149 (which is what I always buy since I have a whole herd of the things around the house for different things) - single user is about $100.

At least Apple manages to SHIP a new version every year. How long did Vista take? And did it even work?

I don't mind Apple attitude too much because its usually so high quality - sometimes annoying but thats art vs consensus. I prefer art to committeeware as it almost always exceeds my expectations.

u/42omle · -2 pointsr/reddit.com

XP is cheaper than Vista
