Some ideas:
Slow speed grinder for sharpening tools
Wolverine jig to aid in sharpening But he needs a grinder also.
If he only has the starter set of tools, he probably doesn't have a bowl gouge Those are the very best. I think 3/8 or 1/2 V-shaped is a good choice. He'll need to make a handle, but that's a good starter project.
A chuck is another great choice, but more expensive and we'd need to know the type of lathe to help pick it out.
I've read good things about these clamps. I got some to give them a try
also, if my fence appears flat to a straight edge against it but a slight twist in regard to the tables, the table must be the problem. does anyone know if these tables can be fine tuned? there are bolts here and there on the sides of the tables but I'm not sure what they do
These will really help if you start to get into the hobby more:

I agree with /u/gozsac, give it a shot before you buy runners. If you use two runners on a sled, you can even compensate for a bit of play, if you made your runners slightly too small.
You could pick up some
1/4"3/4" red oak or plywood and rip5/8"1/2" strips off, make them slightly large and plane or sand the edges down until they just fit the slot. If it doesn't work out you can always buy runners. (The 18" is cheaper)Edit: Sorry, got my numbers wrong.
Speaking of featherboards, I absolutely adore this: https://www.amazon.com/Magswitch-STARTER-KIT-Reversible-Feather/dp/B004AO3IJM/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1497311660&sr=8-1
perfect featherboard for a tablesaw, and bonus, you can add a vertical riser to it to turn it into a featherboard for resawing on a bandsaw.

It's not that hard if you get a dovetail jig. I had decent results on my second try and I'm a complete novice.
I bought a kreg "like" kit on amazon. This is it http://www.amazon.com/General-Tools-850-Pocket-Hole/dp/B00563TOTO/ref=sr_1_8?ie=UTF8&qid=1395213119&sr=8-8&keywords=pocket+jig
It worked great! and is way cheaper
Or would I be better served buy buying this set instead?

I have the K4, and it has worked fine for me. I have drilled hundreds of holes with it, and it is still perfect (I've gone through a few drill bits though).
I haven't personally ever wanted to use the "portable" part of the Kreg jig, where you can remove the drill portion and clamp it onto a piece, rather than putting the piece into the jig, but I can see how it would be handy.
I would like to have the better dust collection and the front lever of the K5, but honestly, not enough to upgrade.
I have recently been made aware of the Porter Cable pocket hole jig, and it looks to be a much better design, although I have not personally used it.
I heard good things about these zero-play miter bars: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B008O2KVR8
Might want to read reviews on Amazon. This is for an older model. Seems they have a newer version and did not see any reviews for it.

I bought something like this Incra. I'm new to wood working and using a table saw and wanted something for a cross cut sled to start off with. It works well for me, it's durable and can be reused when you make another sled.
Hey, I’ve been meaning to send you a link to this dovetail marking jig on Amazon, you can get a little bit cheaper but this one gets excellent reviews and seems to be well-made. I have not used it, but if I were looking for a new marking jig this is the one I would buy. Newkiton Dovetail Marker https://www.amazon.com/dp/B071935Y39/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_zFmVCbBAD34ZX
I have this one:

You could do something like this but the tool and parts to do it right would probably cost more than just a cheap openframe rack
Depending where you are located you can pick up a Dell one from a University sale or off ebay cheap
I'm new to the Kreg lingo, but with help from the Google I have found this "HD" you speak of.
I must own one!
I'm looking at this one. http://www.amazon.com/General-Tools-Instruments-861-Dovetailer/dp/B007E9IMP0 there's youtube videos/reviews check it out. Won't be as good as the porter cable but seems like it'll meet my needs. Has handles so you can even use it on the router table and self aligns
I used this one Kreg Pocket-Hole Jig 310 https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07VP77GQD/ref=cm_sw_r_sms_apa_i_klCTDb2XKN7R1
[This might help] (https://www.amazon.ca/gp/aw/d/B005QU982K/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1479602591&sr=8-1&pi=SY200_QL40&keywords=doweling+jig&dpPl=1&dpID=41OCyukevmL&ref=plSrch)
EDIT This might be better
I'll just leave this here for when I come back to this thread...

:D
I got one of these kits: pocket hole jig
Its definitely not as good as the Kreg, but a fraction of the cost - a good way to get into it, and if it works for you later you can get the good tools.
This is more limited in how you can position a piece of wood relative to the screw pocket. But for butting square pieces of wood its mostly fine.
This?

Not cheap.
How is it better than the Kreg?
I bet it was made with something like this: http://www.amazon.com/Thing-A-Ma-Jig-Deluxe/dp/B0032CBNFE/
I am awake so late because someone must monitor alarms all night to make sure buildings don't burn down.
I currently can't stop singing We Are Golden by MIKA
And this thingamajig would be super cool with the jewelery I'm starting to make!
Ah, it's good to be back RAOA!
Found mine on amazon. Cheapest one I could get my hands on. http://www.amazon.com/General-Tools-860-dovetailer-dovetail/dp/B002RHP7KM/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1381940108&sr=8-4&keywords=dovetail+jig
When I built my crosscut sled from Nick Fury I used these.

They are a adjustable for that fine tuning if you need it and work well.
I've looked into a lot of options, but honestly this thread from the other day has a link to this crazy awesome rack that has a very minimal-looking solution built into it, that looks like a good design. I've been trying to think of a design that essentially keeps the pin guided like that, because up until now I've been thinking more along the lines of a wall-mounted track with a thin rod that attaches to the loading pin, or running it along a shelf rail.
You can get those little shelf rails to be rated for hundreds of pounds, so I almost thought about just attaching a square piece of wood to one and just dropping plates on it, heh.
the oneway wolverine jig is a really nice system. there are several parts to it, the base system ... and then the vara-grind piece.

The robo rest also looks pretty good, but I don't have it yet. http://www.robohippy.net/store/robo-rest-ow-oneway-compatible
Cool project! You mentioned that you are starting to work on flush mounting speakers. I am not sure what tools you are using for the cutting the holes, but if you do not have a Jasper Jig, I would highly recommend one. I built my last set using it, and it made the project so much easier.
