The bike has 1800 miles on it. It came with Renthal bars, ProTaper grips, some Acerbis replacement plastics, and a IMMIX racing rack. It's sitting on Dunlop 606's. The only things I could find wrong with it were the dented muffler, bent brake levers, and missing oem mirrors.

I would appreciate some recommendations for these upgrades:

  • Wide foot pegs
  • Brake and clutch levers, I was considering these budget levers
  • Better mirrors, I can't see a damn thing without crouching to one side
  • Integrated tail light
  • Upgrade to the headlight, either a drop in LED or a full replacement
  • Low profile turn signals
  • Bark busters, I was considering Acerbis Rally Pro X-Strong

Any mandatory mods or other upgrades I should consider? I plan on jetting, 3x3 mod, and getting a full exhaust down the road some. I'm still using borrowed gear at the moment so I need to buy that before I get too crazy.

Levers are very easy to replace. You can get:
OEM replacements from Partzilla, AVS or CRG RC2 levers from DROWsports, Steady Garage, Hard Racing etc.

I went with a cheap set off Amazon that someone had recommend on the HGN forum. The fit perfectly and work as you’d expect them.

I just completed my list of aesthetic mods and I figured I'd share it with you all!

Since I bought my bike (09 SV650A) last May, I have made a few aesthetic mods:

I bought the $43 Adjustable "MZS Tuning" Levers from Amazon, and I have to say I'm pretty happy with them.

-

Specifically, I bought the more "squared" design because I think they look better with the aggressive and hard angles of the FZ-09's styling, over the smooth and rounded levers. MZS makes both styles at about the same price. You can see how the squared design looks installed on my 2017 FZ here.

I went with these levers over the more expensive options because I wanted to try out short levers, but I didn't want to invest a lot of money in a "good set" then end up not liking shorties.

-

So here is my opinion/review of the cheap MZS levers:

  • Machining quality is satisfactory. I don't really have a good basis for comparison, but I can tell you there are no imperfections, burrs, or sharp/rough edges on the levers I received. Yes, you can see some tooling/bit marks from the machining process, specifically on the flat areas, but it really doesn't affect the use of the levers at all, only the looks. I would by no means consider the tooling marks to be "rough."

  • When setting the lever reach/distance adjustment, the "dials" click in place firmly and I don't see them getting knocked out adjustment by accident. This was a big concern for me because I figured if there was anywhere the "cheap levers" would fall short, it would be failing to retain their reach/distance setting under normal use. This, so far, has not been a problem at all.

  • The finish on them seems to be of good quality. They definitely DO NOT have that cheap keychain anodized color look to them. The black and red coloring is nice and deep. Only time will tell if the colors hold up, so I currently cannot speak to the longevity of the finish.

  • I have been using them for about a month, and overall I have no complaints. If I really wanted to point out a negative, I'd say the hard angle design of the levers can make your fingers a bit sore after a long day of riding. However, wearing gloves alleviates this entirely so it's really not a problem at all. This should specific to the style/design of the levers I chose and has nothing to do with the quality of manufacturing.

  • Installation was really easy and straightforward. No, they didn't come with any instructions, but if you're concerned about that there are a few different videos on YouTube showing you how to do it. Specifically, I followed this video. The whole process took me less than 30min and I have never changed motorcycle levers on anything before. The hardest part was making sure I adjusted the clutch cable slack correctly, and that was more to do with me not having much experience than the bike/levers themselves.*

    -

Let's be honest, these are levers, they serve a pretty simple purpose. Unless you install them incorrectly, there's not a whole lot that's going to go wrong with them.

I personally find it hard to believe that the more expensive levers function any better than these do. Style and range of adjustment may be a different story, but that comes down to personal preference.

    -

    TL;DR:

I highly recommend the MZS levers, if you are on a budget or just wanting to try out short levers without spending too much money, you can't go wrong here. They work great and I think they look great.*

Yup that is the right seat. You have to install it on your original seat pan. It's a pain, I would suggest getting a good stapler to do the job.

The plastic tanks might be a little lighter, probably not by much though. I had used the 4.1 gal, and the 3.1 gal. The 4.1 was nice for the range, but I didn't like that it always had a little bit of extra fuel that you couldn't use in the lobe. Also it didn't make the bike look as fast, which was important to me. The 3.1 was a good compromise of range and looks.

The JD kit may actually increase your fuel economy. I actually noticed that it did for me, and many others noticed the same. It also offers a needle with adjustments that the stock needle does not give. It is a very common mod to do, so the bike might already have it. Especially if the PO put a pipe on, but then again who knows.

Kientech makes the extended fuel screw for the bike. When you use the fuel screw, you have to use the OEM Pilot jet size of 22.5. Then turn the fuel screw 2.75 turns out. Many folks get this wrong, they install a bigger 25 PJ, as is recommend with the JD kit, but then they install the extended fuel screw too. This configuration is not good. The fuel screw has s different profile than the stock screw, it already compensates the same as a bigger PJ size would offer. So you end up with way to much fuel. This is covered by many folks as well.

I didn't actually buy the levers I had so I am not sure... but something like this...

https://www.amazon.com/MZS-1996-2000-2000-2017-DJEBEL250XC-1998-2007/dp/B01DBPUHIU

There are like a 100 options I see on amazon. You might want to search around for something with better reviews that looks like that.

The bike pumps oil back into the frame reservoir while it runs. When the bike sits, the oil slowly drains from the reservoir into the bottom of the motor. If you check the oil when it has not been running recently, it wont show any oil. If you check the bike immediately after it was running, it will always show full or high. The bike has to have been running on the street for a while, then park wait 3 mins, then check. The manual says you can idle the bike for 3 mins, then wait 3 mins and check, but this is wrong, just idling the bike will give a false low reading. It is super annoying. I would always check it when I got home after a long ride, that way I was never second guessing myself with pre-ride half assed checks.

I spent a huge amount of time confirming the oil check processes on my bike. The stupid dipstick was maddening. I can backup the procedure that I mention above because I would always measure how much oil drained out of the machine each time I changed the oil, and I would always check it before draining to confirm things too.

got a link to the specific ones you got?

long

those are the ones I bought. $35 to my door. took 3 weeks to ship (longest. ship. ever.)

but they're awesome!!

you have to push the levers forward and go to whichever # you prefer....for me thats #4 on the brakes and #5 on the clutch. smooth clutch that has an easy feel and a stiff brake thats tactile I guess :P

also versys.....pretty sure thats basically the SV650 in a different frame IIRC...and looking it up you have nearly the same type of brake light actuator/whatever

also a quick google reveals no one else with a similair issue lol.

did you adjust your brakes themselves? I noticed after I bled my front brakes (loads of different feels!) that my brake light comes on the second I pull the lever in at all. heck I can't trail brake at all where theres no looseness of my front brake due ot how I bled it :P

u/solitudechirs · 2 pointsr/motorcycles

You can get aftermarket levers that allow you to adjust where they rest. You can also adjust the friction zone of the stock clutch lever because it's a cable lever, but it's still going to rest where it does now, far from the bar. There's this type of lever where you turn the dial and it has a few settings that you can set it to, or this type that allows for more fine tuning as you turn the screw on those.

u/Truextacy · 2 pointsr/FZ07

I bought these ones from Amazon, they are cheaper but I have had no problems with them at all. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00NNL37IK/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1

The levers are short style branded "Ride it" on Amazon

They're pretty good for the price. I've had them for about 4 months now, and they haven't faded and fit well. The metal feels just as good as my CRG levers I had on another bike, but the clickers are not as easy to adjust. They work just fine, but definitely a set it and forget it sort of thing.

As for the windshield, it works really well. It's the OEM Yamaha Sport Screen. I commute a lot more than I thought I was going to and it helps a lot with getting buffeted by the wind. If you're just carving canyons and around town it's not worth $200 (I got mine on Ebay for $80) but if you do a lot of highway at 65+mph it's worth it. I'm 5'10" and it pushes the wind up to my shoulders when sitting up straight, which I prefer, but does make wind noise more pronounced. Not unbearable but like anytime you ride long miles definitely worth wearing earplugs.

I've had These Pazzo wannabes on both my CBR and VFR for over a year now. Looks great, operates as they should and the price is definitely right. As soon as I find a set to fit the Triple, I'll be getting a 3rd pair.

u/pickandpray · 1 pointr/Fixxit

i purchased that one and used it for a few years until I decided I wanted an adjustable lever setup. So I purchased and installed this one:

https://www.amazon.com/Sporacingrts-Cylinder-Reservoir-Motorcycle-125-600CC/dp/B07G982ZYS/ref=sr_1_56_sspa?keywords=shorty+brake+clutch+master&qid=1563230566&s=gateway&sr=8-56-spons&psc=1

the adjusters are crap, but if you tighten the adjusters real good it's not terrible. I have another set of levers on order to replace them but adjustable is much nicer than that first option you posted.

Get a handle on your piston sizes so you understand what size master cylinder will work for you. My 750 has upgraded dual piston single caliper on the front and I'm running a 1/2" master cylinder. Dual calipers will prob need a larger master cylinder like 14mm

This is where I got them from. Aliexpress wasn't my first choice but I took a chance and it worked! Also here are the levers, mirrors, and grips I installed too. These are fit for the Z900 only, so they probably won't fit a different bike, but I am sure they make something for it.

u/Firby03 · 1 pointr/motorcycles

I picked up these a about two months back. No complaints, super easy install. They look really nice and are a lot more comfortable than the stock ones on my 300F.

u/oceanoflust · 1 pointr/xsr900

Guessin they're these.

Just over the $20 with shipping but honestly I'm not sure what the big difference between the chinesium and asv/crg. Guessing ASV replacement is nice but if you aren't tracking (doubt too many trackdays for the XSR) I don't think there's a point. Also can't stand the branding of both all over their shit but I don't have first hand experience with anything besides the stock levers so my opinion is probably worthless.
