The bike has 1800 miles on it. It came with Renthal bars, ProTaper grips, some Acerbis replacement plastics, and a IMMIX racing rack. It's sitting on Dunlop 606's. The only things I could find wrong with it were the dented muffler, bent brake levers, and missing oem mirrors.

I would appreciate some recommendations for these upgrades:

  • Wide foot pegs
  • Brake and clutch levers, I was considering these budget levers
  • Better mirrors, I can't see a damn thing without crouching to one side
  • Integrated tail light
  • Upgrade to the headlight, either a drop in LED or a full replacement
  • Low profile turn signals
  • Bark busters, I was considering Acerbis Rally Pro X-Strong

Any mandatory mods or other upgrades I should consider? I plan on jetting, 3x3 mod, and getting a full exhaust down the road some. I'm still using borrowed gear at the moment so I need to buy that before I get too crazy.

Yeah. It is possible to modify and fit Harley switches on any bike. The main problem you may face is that the Harley switches are made for a larger handlebar diameter - So, either you'd have to replace the handlebars for the larger ones, or use some kind of adapters/spacers.

Another option would be to use BMW R1100 or R1150 switches. These are costly (meanwhile, lots of cheap replicas of Harley switches). R1150 are very big and easy to press. The problem with these is that you need a more special flasher unit (while I think Harley does not). You press the button on each side to turn the signals on, and then press the third button to turn them off.

Personally, I think the Harley switches are actually more friendly to various modifications. The easiest way would be to fit a larger handlebar by using some handlebar risers that accept the larger handlebar (f.e. this).

Since I am a cheap person (and own a lathe) I'd probably do it this way: I'd make aluminium adaptor sleeves that would fit over the stock handlebar, and right under the new switches. I also have a knurling tool for the inside and outside, that'd make it grip well. I'd cut it in half with an angle grinder and use it between the new switches and the handlebar...

Woohoo! A fellow Space Horse rider!

My ride as of today: http://imgur.com/vruVzQu

Did a 17ish mile ride earlier from the most northern point of Manhattan, over the Manhattan bridge to my apartment in Gowanus, BK (my longest single, almost non-stop ride yet! ). It was great except for the fact that my Brooks needs to break in already. :(

One thing I will recommend is to replace the bar end caps, those cheap plastic ones kept on falling out. I got these Fyxation aluminum ones off Amazon and they are sweet.

Hope you like it as much as I do!

u/thegaavv · 7 pointsr/FixedGearBicycle

They look like either the Nitto - Mustache Bar, or the Origin8 Tiki Handlebar

u/CelestialBlueMyka · 5 pointsr/hondagrom

Levers are very easy to replace. You can get:
OEM replacements from Partzilla, AVS or CRG RC2 levers from DROWsports, Steady Garage, Hard Racing etc.

I went with a cheap set off Amazon that someone had recommend on the HGN forum. The fit perfectly and work as you’d expect them.

When we do trips, I lay out the route and share the folder with friends and they can download from this site and upload to their GPS. Did I mention you may not need this.

Don't go full digital on anything. Maps etc. Buy an atlas, cut out the states you're going through and highlight your planned path. Now put states that are near each other on opposite sides (Kansas on one side, Missouri on the other side) and go to OfficeMax and laminate it. I just completed my list of aesthetic mods and I figured I'd share it with you all!

Since I bought my bike (09 SV650A) last May, I have made a few aesthetic mods:

got a link to the specific ones you got?

long

those are the ones I bought. $35 to my door. took 3 weeks to ship (longest. ship. ever.)

but they're awesome!!

you have to push the levers forward and go to whichever # you prefer....for me thats #4 on the brakes and #5 on the clutch. smooth clutch that has an easy feel and a stiff brake thats tactile I guess :P

also versys.....pretty sure thats basically the SV650 in a different frame IIRC...and looking it up you have nearly the same type of brake light actuator/whatever

also a quick google reveals no one else with a similair issue lol.

did you adjust your brakes themselves? I noticed after I bled my front brakes (loads of different feels!) that my brake light comes on the second I pull the lever in at all. heck I can't trail brake at all where theres no looseness of my front brake due ot how I bled it :P

u/Q-dog3 · 2 pointsr/FZ09

Can't speak to asv, but I got these cheaper ones:
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B016BDYLKE

Had to grind them down 1-2mm to fit correctly (I guess that's the extra price you pay). However, 1yr on, and they still feel great.

u/solitudechirs · 2 pointsr/motorcycles

You can get aftermarket levers that allow you to adjust where they rest. You can also adjust the friction zone of the stock clutch lever because it's a cable lever, but it's still going to rest where it does now, far from the bar. There's this type of lever where you turn the dial and it has a few settings that you can set it to, or this type that allows for more fine tuning as you turn the screw on those.

I bought the $43 Adjustable "MZS Tuning" Levers from Amazon, and I have to say I'm pretty happy with them.

-

Specifically, I bought the more "squared" design because I think they look better with the aggressive and hard angles of the FZ-09's styling, over the smooth and rounded levers. MZS makes both styles at about the same price. You can see how the squared design looks installed on my 2017 FZ here.

I went with these levers over the more expensive options because I wanted to try out short levers, but I didn't want to invest a lot of money in a "good set" then end up not liking shorties.

-

So here is my opinion/review of the cheap MZS levers:

  • Machining quality is satisfactory. I don't really have a good basis for comparison, but I can tell you there are no imperfections, burrs, or sharp/rough edges on the levers I received. Yes, you can see some tooling/bit marks from the machining process, specifically on the flat areas, but it really doesn't affect the use of the levers at all, only the looks. I would by no means consider the tooling marks to be "rough."

  • When setting the lever reach/distance adjustment, the "dials" click in place firmly and I don't see them getting knocked out adjustment by accident. This was a big concern for me because I figured if there was anywhere the "cheap levers" would fall short, it would be failing to retain their reach/distance setting under normal use. This, so far, has not been a problem at all.

  • The finish on them seems to be of good quality. They definitely DO NOT have that cheap keychain anodized color look to them. The black and red coloring is nice and deep. Only time will tell if the colors hold up, so I currently cannot speak to the longevity of the finish.

  • I have been using them for about a month, and overall I have no complaints. If I really wanted to point out a negative, I'd say the hard angle design of the levers can make your fingers a bit sore after a long day of riding. However, wearing gloves alleviates this entirely so it's really not a problem at all. This should specific to the style/design of the levers I chose and has nothing to do with the quality of manufacturing.

  • Installation was really easy and straightforward. No, they didn't come with any instructions, but if you're concerned about that there are a few different videos on YouTube showing you how to do it. Specifically, I followed this video. The whole process took me less than 30min and I have never changed motorcycle levers on anything before. The hardest part was making sure I adjusted the clutch cable slack correctly, and that was more to do with me not having much experience than the bike/levers themselves.*

    -

Let's be honest, these are levers, they serve a pretty simple purpose. Unless you install them incorrectly, there's not a whole lot that's going to go wrong with them.

I personally find it hard to believe that the more expensive levers function any better than these do. Style and range of adjustment may be a different story, but that comes down to personal preference.

    -

    TL;DR:

I highly recommend the MZS levers, if you are on a budget or just wanting to try out short levers without spending too much money, you can't go wrong here. They work great and I think they look great.*

u/OldDirtyRedditor · 2 pointsr/klr650

These are the one i used - https://amzn.com/B008GSTWRA They went on easily and cause no issues for me. I have put about 2000 miles on them. Good luck!

Tingling comes from gripping too hard; ease up on the grips and consider getting a Cramp Buster Throttle Assist. Great for long rides. Best part is that it's removable, so you can take it with you on just about any bike.

I use this. Requires my hand to be on the throttle otherwise it will disengage. It just makes it so that I don't have to grip, but my wrist controls speed for hills. I take it off when I'm not on the freeway.

u/zmzmbm · 1 pointr/hondagrom

I have these on mine and they work great. just had to tighten some of the bolts on the levers to prevent them from shaking around. Install takes 10 mins tops.

I bought this. There is a Motion Pro one also that has no grip included. I think they're the same thing. You have to file down part of the cable routing thing I think around 1/8'' to be able to open the throttle 100%. I just matched it up to the old tube I pulled off.

The grip that comes on the one I linked is a piece of shit and made my hand fall asleep in like 10 minutes, even with a fairly light grip.

Looking at the clamps you are looking at, they are different than the ones I have. Mine are the protaper universal ones (with 3/4" lift that you are looking to avoid).

Mine have two bolts that go into the top of the triple tree not the one bolt like the ones you linked. Which reminded me that the SM has the upside-down forks which must have a different triple tree. When I pulled that part number, it was for a DRZ400SM though.

Last random link for ya, this is the post I used while shopping that RAM mount, they all say its M8 here too.

I think you are right (we're talking different bolts) , my S doesn't have a removable lower bar clamp like the SM; which makes sense, upside-down forks vs conventional so the upper triple isn't the same. This also explains why it's so dang confusing to pick out a scott's steering damper!

Anyway, good luck with the new bike! This is my first season on my DRZ400s and I love it so far. Huge upgrade over my xt350... haha

u/MA34 · 1 pointr/Dualsport

Risers? Just cheap ones I found on Amazon. First time I stood up on the bike the bars felt short, so I bought these (https://www.amazon.com/Kawasaki-Aluminum-Handle-Risers-inch/dp/B008GSTWRA/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1497301478&sr=8-1&keywords=klr+handlebar+risers) because they were so cheap

u/LilDutchy · 1 pointr/motorcycles

I have something similar to this. I have carpal tunnel issues and i need to get my hand off the bars now and then and can set this and take it off long enough for feeling to come back to the carpal half of my hand (thumb, index, middle and half the ring finger) It's helped me a lot. It doesn't help in the curves but on the straights it's been wonderful.

u/sojournerc · 1 pointr/triathlon

The bar ends that come with most handlebar wraps tend to fall out, so I bought some quality ones that tighten in the handlebar so they are sure to hold. these

Bar ends prevent you from taking a core sample of you or anyone else if you have the misfortune of crashing.
