This is just wild-hair suggestion which I haven't tried, but it's worth a shot. Buy a lock box, something similar to this, and drill some holes for ventilation and to pass through the cables. You will likely need to get an external antenna which you also pass through a whole in the lock box or you will find the range severely limited. Just be sure to not put the holes too close to the reset button or your roommates will likely find a way to push that button. If you can't avoid putting a hole near the reset button then put some tape over the button to frustrate anyone attempting to push the button.

Another thing to consider is that someone is hacking into the box from the outside. Did you enable encryption and WPA or WPA2?

I double sleeve all my decks, but it's probably worth mentioning I only play Modern or Legacy so the decks are typically higher value. I might not bother doubling on a standard deck.

One word of caution with regard to storage: be wary of fire-proof safes. They often have a wet clay in the walls of the safe, and if you don't leave it open some portion of the time to avoid moisture accumulation it will ruin your cards.

I keep my cards in binders and deck boxes inside one of these: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001UHO4Z4/

It's a discontinued model now but it's done the job well and I haven't had any issues with the cards being left inside for a month or more at a time.

could you check the dimensions on your piece: I found this on Amazon with a quick cursory check

edit: I know you asked for something to "engineer" but frankly I think you would save time and arguably money by just buying a super cheap lockbox.

When we were in college we had a roommate that liked to steal make-up and even underclothes. I got myself something like this:

Storage Trunk

Lockable Chest

And that worked pretty well. When she had the gall to say something about it I let her know it's because she stole my things and didn't return them - so I couldn't trust her with my belongings.

I still kept things locked up because those kind of hams have no shame and will do it again. They are weak willed and selfish.

Buy one of these and put drugs inside. It's what I did so my college roommate would stop taking my stash. It was that or punch him in the balls and I'm not a violent man.

This one fills my night stand draw and the lid is spring loaded so i just enter my code, turn the knob and it pops right open.

I picked mine up fairly cheap at BJ's Wholesale for about that price. Probably not the most secure, but my son or niece aren't going to be smashing it with a hammer, which is my main concern.

This type of small gun safe works for me.

They are really well-built and the electronics have been reliable thus far.

This is what I use but I can't carry it on, I have to check it every time.

I have this one. It's ok. I kinda want this one. It has more straps to hold things down. This looks like it would work well. I also have this and I see it mentioned here a lot, but personally, I think it sucks. I don't use it unless I need to.

in your situation, I'd go with something like this

I've got something similar ... but mine looks much more like a typical 2-drawer file cabinet ... I've never kept guns in it, but no reason I couldn't

in your situation, it's got a few things going for it ...

  • it's heavy ... not too heavy to take with you when you move ... but no one's gonna be high-stepping down the street carrying it, either

  • it's fire and water resistant ... maybe that'll come in handy ... maybe not ... beats a poke in the eye with a sharp stick

  • if you can find a model (like mine ... sorry, discontinued) that looks more like a file cabinet, maybe someone'll be less interested in the contents

  • if ya ever do get kids or a questionable roommate, it s/b good enough to keep them out

  • if ya ever get important stuff, ya could keep that in there, too

as has been said, if someone knows what they're doing, it mostly doesn't matter what you've got ... but, instead of nothing at all, I like this

Never underestimate the need for a safe

Would you like a falafel with that?

u/falling_stone · 1 pointr/lifehacks

I think you could modify it to be a bit more sturdy. Honestly, hiding in plain sight stuff like this doesn't typically stand up to physical inspection. I like stuff like this.

It's okay. Living with other people has a certain amount of concerns. Have you considered getting a lock box? Something like this. Even if they get nosey, they'd have to pry it open and that's just a blatant violation of privacy and trust that even if they're curious they shouldn't have need to do. If you look you'll find them in all sizes, styles, and colors. You could just slide it under your bed, in a bottom drawer, or in the closet and not worry about it. You can even decorate it to make it look as "you" as you want.
