Use a safety razor.

Get one of those old school razors with a butterfly hinge (something like this: https://www.amazon.com/Parker-99R-Handle-Heavyweight-Butterfly/dp/B003NTHWLU)

and get safety razors (https://www.amazon.com/Astra-Platinum-Double-Safety-Blades/dp/B001QY8QXM)

These give you as good a shave as anything else.

You can use each razor for a dozen or more uses, and its way cheaper to replace them.

It will take some getting used to early on, but for the first few weeks get a stiptik (https://www.amazon.com/Clubman-Pinaud-Styptic-Pencil-Travel/dp/B00EOAKLFQ) too, to stop the bleeding in case you cut yourself.

u/romaniwolf · 14 pointsr/pics

you should find them in a drug store with the other shaving supplies.

Here's one I found online using google

u/TwoChe · 13 pointsr/funny

I was thinking use them to squeeze the cut together, or similar to one of these that you use when shaving. http://www.amazon.com/The-Art-Shaving-Styptic-Unscented/dp/B000NQBGYK/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1377619605&sr=8-1&keywords=shave+pen

Pro tip: get a styptic pencil (aka shaving pencil). Makes it clot pretty much instantly.

u/newtmitch · 11 pointsr/AskMenOver30

Check out a Merkur safety razor (https://www.amazon.com/Merkur-Long-Handled-Safety-Razor/dp/B000NL0T1G) and a sample blade pack from amazon.

Get an inexpensive shaving brush to start with to see how you like it, but eventually drop more money on a nice brush. Spend $10-$15 to start then expect to drop $50+ on a nice pure badger hair brush in a few months. The badger brush that I bought for like $70 I still have with me 4-5 years later (although admittedly I don't shave terribly often). Once you get that pricey brush, get a cheap plastic holder for it as well - keep the bristles pointing down instead of up - after using it leaving them facing upwards allows the water to settle around the base and weaken the glue holding in the bristles, ultimately destroying your expensive brush. Not good.

Check out Proraso soaps in a bowl - more convenient than paste or anything else, I've found. They have multiple types, here's my favorite as it makes my face a little tingly: https://www.amazon.com/Proraso-Shaving-Soap-Refreshing-Toning/dp/B00837YY18

If you prefer your own bowl, Proraso makes a paste and you can get a mug or bowl to mix it in - I found I preferred the ready-to-go stuff as it's faster and makes it more likely I'll shave regularly. :)

Then, after you've done all that and realized it's the best shave you've ever done and it's actually way more fun to shave than you ever thought it'd be, go for a straight razor. Don't do an actual blade, strop, and all that stuff right away. Instead, just go get a disposable straight razor blade holder and some blades: https://www.amazon.com/Equinox-Professional-Straight-Single-Blades/dp/B0118BJ0PA and learn how to use that thing. Then if you're like me and shave once every week or two (super lazy!) you can literally take weeks of beard off in a single pass with a straight razor and a fresh blade. I stopped here, personally, didn't go on to a full straight razor as they're pricey and you need to maintain it (oil, strop, etc) - likely something I'd let slide and ultimately wish I hadn't spent the money on...

Also, get a styptic pencil: https://www.amazon.com/Woltra-Styptic-Pencil-Small-0-25/dp/B000EGIEOE - it stings a bit when you cut yourself but almost immediately stops the bleeding. Unlike cuts/nicks with a multiblade razor, cuts with a safety razor or straight razor are actual "cuts" - and they bleed like cuts. Like, "blood trickling down your face" type cuts. They look worse than they are because you have water on your face and it thins the blood and it runs more, but it bleeds. This will stop that bleeding really fast at the expense of a little more pain right up front. I keep one handy.

I've turned several friends on to at least the safety razor. It's way more fun to shave that way, less expensive, and is better for your skin to boot. If you like a really close shave, too, you can get a better shave overall with a 3-pass technique (I don't do that, personally) as you get better. All sorts of options...

edit: mentioned the brush holder
edit2: styptic pencil

Have an Styptic Pencil for shaving on hand.

It'll burn like hell, but will stop it right quick.

u/lydmeister · 10 pointsr/AdviceAnimals

Invest in a styptic pencil. Apparently they used to be a medicine cabinet staple to stop shaving cuts from bleeding and have just faded out of popularity.

u/d_c_d_ · 8 pointsr/AskMen

Cuts and nicks happen, get a styptic pencil… stings like a bitch, but stops bleeding instantly.

u/VyrCossont · 7 pointsr/transgendercirclejerk

How a man deals with his own blood loss is his business. Tape a pad on it and go about your day.

/uj two words: styptic pencil. There's some nasty aluminum compound in these things that stops bleeding and seals shaving cuts instantly.

u/nschimmo · 7 pointsr/wmnf

We're doing the 48 with our dog and she's handled most well. As most people said on the Northern Presis we had some issues specifically Mount Washington. However in terms of steepness she handled the slide on Owl's Head really well. The boulders aren't challenging for her, just Mount Washington tore up her paws.

A couple of "must have" (recommended) things for hiking with your dog:

Dog Boots

Pack A Paw (Emergency Dog Sling)

Styptic Pencil (Stop bleeding on claws)

u/AWildLurkerAppears64 · 6 pointsr/traaaaaaannnnnnnnnns

Styptic pencils are your friend 😶 I know those feels though...got a consultation for laser/electrolysis this Thursday

u/hazeleyedwolff · 6 pointsr/TrollYChromosome

You're right, styptic is the way to go. I prefer this roll-on styptic to the pencils.

u/bwhite3604 · 5 pointsr/wicked_edge

my nik is sealed off of amazon for $5.49

http://www.amazon.com/COSMETICALLY-SEALED-Sealed-Styptic-0-17/dp/B001B8HRII/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1325280869&sr=8-1

definitely something you should get in the near future. you could pick up a regular styptic pencil at pretty much any store, but the roller-ball action of my nik is sealed is much more comfortable.

as for the moment rubbing alcohol will definitely prevent it from infecting, but wont stop the bleeding at all.

u/trailrider · 5 pointsr/AskMen

I use a Merkur Safety Razor. Sometimes, the older ways are better. I get just as good of a shave as with any triple or more bladed razor. There is a learning curve to it though. You can and will cut yourself. Once you get use to it though, it's great. You can use a styptic pencil for small nicks.

u/Leisureguy · 3 pointsr/wicked_edge

I highly recommend My Nik Is Sealed. The link is to Amazon.co.uk, and here it is at Amazon.com.

A liquid styptic works much better for me than a styptic pencil.

u/cardboard-dinghy · 3 pointsr/traaaaaaannnnnnnnnns

stypic pencils girl! stops bleeders and weepers fast without leaving a big scab, especially good on your face. most drug stores carry them too

u/codece · 3 pointsr/whatisthisthing

Could it be a styptic pencil? Usually found in the bathroom or 1st aid kit -- you moisten it with water, and then use it to stop bleeding from minor nicks and cuts, like when shaving for example.

Example

u/RaggedClaws · 3 pointsr/Wet_Shavers

My Nick is Sealed - much better

u/Reziarfg · 3 pointsr/todayilearned

Or you can use a styptic pencil which was designed to do this without rubbing chap stick that was on your mouth on an open wound.

Here is my recommendation:

Razor: Edwin Jagger DE89 $29.60 I have this and love it.

Blades:This sampler pack $25.00. The reason for a sampler is one of the main tenents of Wicked_Edge- YMMV(you mileage may vary), the blades that come with the razor may not be the right ones for you, blades treat everyone differently, what works for me might not work for you. A sampler gives you a bunch of blades to test to find what one is right for your face.

Soap:TOBS Sandalwood and bowl I also have this and love it. $20.00

Brush:This Omega boar $16.00

All of this comes out to $90.00 which should come to $100 shipped(hopefully).

I would also recommend you buy the following if you are able:

Alum block $9.50 This is an after shave treatment, you rub it on your wet face it is a mild antibacterial and closes your pores, helps keep ingrowns and pimples down.

Styptic pencil/rollerball $4.95 I have this one and it does fine. This is for when you nick your face, you rub it on the nick and it stops the bleeding very fast.

And Leisureguy's book $12.95 This is a guide to wet shaving wit ha DE razor, it has a wealth of information and will help you immensely.

You can upgrade later as you can afford it, but this would be a good start. Watch a lot of YouTube vidoes, just search for "Safety Razor Shaving" or "DE Razor Shaving".

u/Mikuro · 2 pointsr/specializedtools

DEs? Not that hard. Check out /r/wicked_edge for tips. The key is to go in multiple passes (first with the grain of your beard) and use as little pressure as possible, practically hovering over your skin. You can be aggressive with cartridges (you kind of have to be, even), but not with DEs.

The risk with a safety razor isn't too high. You can get nicks, but it's only a little more dangerous than a cartridge in that regard. I do recommend getting a bit of gear to start with that you might not have, such as:

  • A shaving brush to apply non-canned cream
  • A tub of shaving soap or cream (I like Taylor of Old Bond Street, personally)
  • An alum block as an initial post-shave pass
  • A roll-on styptic like the Nick Stick to stop any bleeding.
  • A good aftershave balm
u/neckbeard404 · 2 pointsr/bugout

This stuff stops bleeding. I like to crush it into a powder.

https://www.amazon.com/Clubman-Pinaud-Styptic-Pencil-Travel/dp/B00E5QJC04

u/PersephoneIsNotHome · 2 pointsr/lifehacks

Don't use paprika. There is are syptic medications that will help the blood vessels to constrict.

If she is on blood thinners and the bleeding doesn't stop, this can be dangerous and you should go to urgent care, not use something that will risk infection.

u/rgb003 · 2 pointsr/wicked_edge

I employed the efforts of Mr. A. Block, Mr. S. Pencil, and Mr. N. Relief. These fine gentleman did wonders even with the weepers. Splashed some After Shave on and started screaming like a banshee.

u/Beeip · 2 pointsr/firstaid

While you're correct, calcium plays a part in the clotting cascade, the effects you'd like see from adding calcium to your life would probably be kidney stones, abdominal pain, and delerium. Ethanol also discourages platelet aggregation. Ask any wine enthusiast.

Do you straight shave? You could try using a common styptic pencil, but that works by contracting skin, not blood vessels, and furthermore, it burns a lot.

I understand your frustration. When not life-threatening (nor even a little worrying) bleeding is annoying. But this is the price one pays for a lesser-likelihood of clots, which, I would argue, is a great benefit!

u/2CentsMaybeLess · 2 pointsr/wicked_edge

Post shave skin care.

If you knick yourself, a styptic like My Nik Is Sealed is nice. The ones with the roller ball is cleaner to apply than the chalky crayon type.

When done shaving, apply a witchhazel, a shave balm, and then if you like, an aftershave. With Proraso, I like the following. These are also popular "standard" products.

Thayer's Medicated with Aloe Vera . Witch Hazel without a scent doesn't smell good. Thayer's brand does pleasant scents. This one has alcohol, and they also make without, but I recommend try with first.

Nivea Post Shave Balm. This is also often available in regular stores, like Walmart.

Clubman Osage Rub After Shave. This menthol scent after shave isn't so much a standard, but IMO the way it numbs your face it is a must have. Refreshing in the hot summer.

u/elgringo · 2 pointsr/AskReddit

I have hated shaving for quite some time. But, a few months back, I bought this razor on a lark: http://www.amazon.com/Parker-SR1-Stainless-Straight-Razor/dp/B002PQZEHQ/ref=pd_sxp_f_pt

I'm in love. I really enjoy the hell out of shaving now that I'm shaving with a straight edge. Shaving has become something of a soothing ritual... take the brush and lather the soap up, hot steamy water to the face, shave face with a straight edge, repeat (closer shave when you do it twice), cleanup and replace blade for next shave.

I find myself shaving more often than I need to. Maybe it's just an excuse to play with a knife. I always have loved playing with them. Perhaps it's the challenge of getting the hand/eye/pressure coordination just right that I enjoy so much. Regardless, I like shaving now. I'm getting a very close shave, and as an added perk, it's hella cheap.

Items I use:

The razor. I would suggest getting a razor with a replacable blade unless you really enjoy sharpening your razor and stropping it every time you're going to shave.
http://www.amazon.com/Parker-SR1-Stainless-Straight-Razor/dp/B002PQZEHQ/ref=pd_sxp_f_pt

The brush and soap. I can see myself upgrading these, but regardless, I'm really rather happy with them.
http://www.amazon.com/Van-Hagen-Premium-Shave-Brush/dp/B001A3HPT0/ref=pd_bxgy_hpc_img_b

You'll inevitably nick yourself. A small dab of styptic pencil, and it stops the bleeding and cleans the wound. Stings just a bit, though.
http://www.amazon.com/Clubman-Styptic-Pencil-1-Pack/dp/B000WB02J6

After my first shave, I liked it so much, I straight away bought another 120 replacable blades. Nothing like a virgin blade every time you shave.
http://www.amazon.com/Shark-Stainless-Straight-Barber-Professional/dp/B002OND3LO/ref=pd_sxp_grid_pt_0_0

u/chchad · 2 pointsr/wicked_edge

I have the Merkur Futur and I really like it, but that smooth satin handle gets slickery when wet. If I had to buy another, I would go with something like this.

I also bought this blade sample pack. The difference in blades is huge and it's all personal preference. I would've never known which ones worked best for me without these samples.

Add a My Nik Is Sealed Styptic Pen to your order. It took me 10 shaves before I didn't have to close a wound when I was done :)

u/[deleted] · 2 pointsr/Frugal

I got started with safety razor relatively cheaply, buying everything on amazon. I'm linking to individual items, but you can use amazon's suggestions to bundle most of this together for less than $35. And the best part is, soap and blades can cost less than $20 a year.

My razor + first blades

You'll need this (especially as a beginner)

These can probably last you a year or more.

You can buy regular shaving cream at first, but your curiosity will lead you here.

u/BendydickCuminsnatch · 2 pointsr/wicked_edge

I can't say much about using a safety razor, but when I first started shaving with a double edge razor, I noticed that my skin felt irritated. It felt like it burned for the first few hours after shaving. I've always had sensitive skin, but my skin was never red even though it really felt like it should have been. As I continued shaving, I noticed that the burning sensation was getting shorter and shorter, and it eventually stopped after a couple of weeks. It may just be the combined irritation of the brush, soap, and razor, and you may just get used to it within the next week or two. Either way, go nuts with the sample packs and extras for shaving, it's the best way to find potential favorites!

One of the best 'extras' I got was a Styptic Pencil. If you don't have one, I'd definitely consider it for any accidental nicks.

u/mmosh · 2 pointsr/wicked_edge

So how much are these per month again?

  • Stirling samples are $3 each
  • American Gent Soap Co soap is $6,
  • Gillette 7 O'Clock blades - $1.50 @ Maggard
  • Shark Super Chrome blades - $1.50 @ Maggard
  • Styptic matches 24 packs of 20 - $15 @ Amazon - or $0.625 per book. - also found these on Amazon for $9.07/24, or $.38 per pack.

    Total: $15.62
u/upachimneydown · 1 pointr/japanlife

I was just looking and found this three-pack. ¥1000 seems a little high, but the same thing from the US (after the shipping/duty addition) is about the same.

u/dermzzz · 1 pointr/wicked_edge

I actually had this wish list for the longest time. I decided to pull the trigger on it last month. I have never been more free from ingrown hairs/unsightly blemishes. Shaving is now a pleasurable experience, not a chore.

These things burn like hell. You're better off going with a liquid styptic gel, like My Nik is Sealed. That said, take CrazyMarmoset's advice and head over to r/wicked_edge. Will probably do your face some good.

u/dregan · 1 pointr/pics

Jesus OP, that's pretty bad. You might consider some feather proguard razors and this replaceable blades straightedge until you are more comfortable and stop cutting yourself.

EDIT: At the very least, get one of these.

u/VeniVidiVixen · 1 pointr/answers

You could try a styptic pencil. Burns like the dickens for a few seconds, but stops bleeding.

u/biteysaur · 1 pointr/Drugs

I have actually used styptic powder (always getting paper cuts on my fingers or nail/cuticule chewer, carry some with me in case I need it, works better than bandaids for your fingers) as an excuse for a drug vial, and it worked. Depends how suspicious they are of you in the first place. Here's the actual stuff for reference: http://www.amazon.com/Nick-Relief-Styptic-Powder-Vial/dp/B000172SES

u/3gaway · 1 pointr/gifs

It looks similar to the styptic pencil I use to close shaving cuts. It stops the bleeding instantly. I always assumed that it's bad to use on regular (larger) wounds or else it would be a more popular product. It was really cheap too so it has to be a health thing.
