I feel like the most you're going to get out of a toy dog like that is maybe a few half hour walks a day. Weren't they bred to be lap dogs? If you want him to come along on longer jogs/bike rides, you could always get a stroller/bike basket for him to ride in.

Also:
>I wouldn't say I'm highly active--more like low-moderate. 5 miles of jogging a day, working up to at least 7. 3 or 4 miles of biking several days a week
If you live in the US and you keep to this routine, you're definitely in the high end. I know a lot of people (like 90% of my friends and co-workers) who don't even WALK a mile a day. For your activity level, you may be a better fit for a herding breed.
That poor little dog is probably like "Jesus, mom, slow down! My legs are like 5 inches long!" XD

These are all cages that are an appropriate size. You can also look up DIY bin cages or get a 30 gallon tank.
You really want to have 4-6 inches of bedding for burrowing purposes.
Living World Green Eco Habitat, Medium https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00E1XWJ2O/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_T.m1DbYTG1TSA
Amazon! It was cheaper when I bought it than the listed price now.
In the U.S., the best you can do is a Detolf-DIY cage.
Other options are:
You'll get the most inches per dollar with the Detolf, but for a Syrian you'll probably want to make some sort of DIY mesh lid. There are lots of super great examples on this sub.
Anything you get will need to accommodate a wheel that is at least 10". The Silent Runner is a great wheel. You can also get an 11" Wodent Wheel off Amazon, and lots of people like Carolina Storm wheels (10" and available off Etsy).
I actually adopted him from a friend who could no longer take care of him, so I am just in the beginning stages of getting him set up. I'll need to buy him a bigger cage before we can get him a cage-mate, which is something I'm working on. Apparently Francis used to have a brother, but he died a few months ago. I can tell that he needs a friends though, he is a bit mopey and I have a feeling that is why.
His cage is too small to put another rat in there comfortably. I'm saving up for this one.

Little Friends Langham Tall Rat and Hamster Cage with Two Floors, 77 x 47 x 58 cm, Silver/ Black https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00OFPLT92/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_soPFyb9590KAG
It says it's currently unavailable. I dunno why. I got it on sale. Here the less tall version:Little Friends Grosvenor Rat and Hamster Cage with Wooden Shelf and Ladder, Large, 77 x 47 x 36 cm, Silver/ Black https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00OFPLT60/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_ZpPFyb6YXC07H
I would never advise someone to only get one ferret. It isn’t really fair to the ferret, they’re meant to be with others.
Also the size of the cage is fine but cleaning it with those doors is going to be a huge pain in the ass. The double doors on this cage make cleaning it so much easier
Midwest Deluxe Ferret Nation Double Unit Ferret Cage (Model 182) Includes 2 Leak-Proof Pans, 2 Shelves, 3 Ramps w/Ramp Covers & 4 Locking Wheel Casters, Measures 36" L x 25" W x 62.5" H Inches https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000F4UNCG/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_gxHMDbYG7PQRJ
I've got the same one, but I painted it grey instead of the standard barn-door red it's manufactured in. https://www.amazon.com/Advantek-Stilt-House-Rabbit-Hutch/dp/B0087BI9KW/ref=asc_df_B0087BI9KW/?tag=hyprod-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=167159405462&hvpos=1o7&hvnetw=g&hvrand=13873777023362278585&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=m&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9014904&hvtargid=pla-465707179112&psc=1
So if you can spare just 25 more dollars you can get this
If that's really not an option this one could probably fullfill your needs, though the platforms look a bit small.
If you can find a 40 gallon breeder aquarium, I 100% recommend that. It’s about 50 pounds so a bit heavy if you need to carry it up the stairs. If you have the money, I definitely suggest the Living world eco green habitat. It comes in 3 sizes and is very light weight. I have included the link from amazon.com. If you’re going cheaper though you can try making a bin cage or going onto Facebook market place. People have been selling tanks for really cheap here in the us.

We just did the exact same as you -- recently (last week) got a Syrian hamster and a Crittertrail Two Level Habitat (from petsmart). It was immediately obvious that it wasn't going to work. The whole thing is just way to small and it's was the largest hamster-bar-width cage they sold.
Luckily I found a large cage on Craigslist and my hamster is now, quite obviously, much happier.
Having been browsing around all these hamster related websites it seems like it's pretty easy to do some kind make-shift hamster cage.

I have this cage right now for my two new girls (3 month old & 6 weeks old). I've had them in it for a while and none of them have managed to escape. It's all wire floors but if you can just find like old blankets/ fleece/ vinyl to cover the wire it's a pretty good cage. I'm gonna get them a bigger one in the long run but for now for the price I think it works really great. I think it's a decent starter cage for the price.
No this cage is not nearly big enough. To put it into perspective, it’s 24x12 inches. The wheel is just one of the many things you need in a cage, and the wheel itself needs to be 12 inches.
I’m not too clued up about cages in the US but at the end of the day, a proper cage is part of the essential care of your pet and should be factored into the cost of owning it. It’s one of those things, if you can’t afford an appropriate home for your pet, how will you afford to take it to the vets if it gets sick? All pets are expensive, even little ones.
I had this one and loved it.
https://www.amazon.com/Little-Friends-Grosvenor-Hamster-Wooden/dp/B00OFPLT60/ref=mp_s_a_1_6?keywords=wooden+hamster+cage&qid=1572268901&sr=8-6
Or obviously you have the option of bin cages if you’re set on getting a hamster and not willing to spend the money needed. Victoria Rachael on YouTube has a video about making a cheap bin cage
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=i57deM8u77U
This video is “owning a hamster on a budget”
The wire floring is the main concern with that cage. There is a slight chance that a rat could get stuck/break a toe/get bumble-foot. I've had a similar cage for years with 15 some-odd rats over its lifetime, none have been hurt by the wire floor.
That being said, there are MUCH better cages out there. The feret nation cage is the sub-reddit-gold-standard. The cage has french doors that are the entire front of the cage. The shelving/ladders are hard plastic that is safe for rodents, and the base model comes with a stand to keep it off the floor and space to store food/bedding. It will absolutely be the next cage I buy.
Its a bit pricey (I'll look for a link) so if the cage you've shown us is in your price range then you have my go-ahead to get it. I have a similar one amd it works great.
Edit: found it! ~$130 for the single-story cage, ~$200 for the double.

When I boarded my girl rats at Andy's all four of them fit fine in that cage. Some stuff I'd recommend are get tons of Lava ledges so they can have different heights in the cage. They have Big ones and Small ones. The small ones are only available online now I think. My girls love to hop from one to another plus it will help file down their nails and teeth. I currently have 10 big ones and 8 small ones in my 2 cages. A hammock is great but you can also put a space pod in there too as another place to sleep or chill. I just got one for my girls but I'm waiting for a hammock to be chewed down before putting it in there. I also got The Bandit Bridge and my girls love that too. I mainly use it as a safety net in case they fall off one of the ledges. I'd rather have them land on a soft thing than the igloo or hard cage bottom. Basically I'm cutting the fall in half.
Also if you still want to get another cage I recommend The Rat Manor I have it and my girls LOVE it! It's big enough for 4 rats so 3 would fit perfectly plus it has a metal bottom so they can't chew holes in it. Other than that you seem to be on the right track. Just spend a lot of time with them and get them used to you kinda like a re-introduction to humans and they should turn out fine. They may have been scared of the kids and all the noise but it sounds like they should perk up to you in no time after they get used to their new surroundings. Good luck and keep us posted!
Based on the inside dimensions of the cage, the cage caculator suggests 5 as the maximum number of rats (allowing 2 ft^3 per rat).
I've had four boys in a single and it worked out fine but only because I did my best to utilize every square inch of the cage. In general, I think 3 is the magic number for a single CN. My boys are currently in a double and they really take advantage of all of the space. Sometimes they're a cuddled up together but most of the time they're totally spread out around the cage. I think a double unit would be much better for 6 girls. You can get an add-on unit to turn your single into a double for about $94 (free shipping) right now at Amazon.
I actually have them all in a bin cage right now while I patch up the cage and clean everything. https://imgur.com/RECXzjH
I found a cage on Amazon that I think might be suitable for the two older girls and one baby which is what I plan to keep out of the 13. Do you think it would work? https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00T53QH4Q/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_O3DIAbD1M28JQ
It's me again. I was able to find what I need at Home Depot and it was about $40, but I am still debating. What do you think about putting an Mcage on the top? (This one.) It is quite a bit taller than I wanted, and might be kind of ridiculous. But it says it folds down, so maybe I have the option of using the top part only? It is $60.
Anyway, still debating. Putting the cage on top would mean it has shelves and a door as well.
Thanks for your input!
What about this one?
https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B005CAYZ4A/ref=cm_sw_r_wa_api_i_twc4CbD3N0J6Z
I ordered it off Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004HXMI10/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1. Its a pretty decent sized cage. I've got two adolescent rats in there right now.
I’m gonna advise against terrariums. Unless you live in a place that has very low humidity, and you’re house stays below 80, you’ll need a cage. Terrariums trap humidity, create a hot environment, and hold ammonia, all of which are bad for hedgehogs. Also if you went the terrarium route, you would be needing a 40 gallon breeder or a 55 gallon.
If you’re a little more handy, you could build a wooden Vivarium, and have large, hinged doors. Or you could assemble a c and c cage too. There are also some store bought cages the are pretty good.

This is the one I'm using right now, but I'm about to get a new one because with the stand it's taller than I am.
They also do a double but it's only £5 cheaper.
It's about the size of the Savic Mickey 2 XL that I have for my Syrian. He is quite happy in it and has plenty of room for the wheel (he uses a 9" or 10", I tried several wheels and don't remember which I finally settled on. I just remember 8" was too small and 12" too large). And plenty of room to burrow. Just be sure to add plenty of bedding for digging. I use Carefresh paper bedding and fill the tray all the way up.
http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B001VJ0APE/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?qid=1370300923&sr=8-1&pi=SL75 this is a great cage for rats.
This is the problem hedgie I posted about a few days ago. I bought a new, larger enclosure for him and moved him into today. He was a bit grumpy during the move as I had to wake him up for it, but he's loving the cage so far it seems. The blue "ball" at the bottom of the cage is his hide...which he sleeps under. Underneath it is a pet safe Heating Pad to help regulate temperature in that hiding spot. It's designed for small animals so it only gets up to about 100 F or so (just over human body temp) and is under his bedding to keep him directly off of it. It's been enough to keep him warm in his previous enclosure which is nice. The cage is an Amazon Basics Small Animal Cage, Large which is a bit bigger than the previous enclosure. I've got to clean up his wheel and get it mounted for him, but after that he should be more comfortable than he was before. Hopefully this helps his attitude.
This is the exact setup http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B005AYYM0A/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?qid=1457472990&sr=1-1&pi=SY200_QL40&keywords=bunny+cage&dpPl=1&dpID=510mTiUYAoL&ref=plSrch&th=1&psc=1
no critter trail, no habitrail.
perfect cage for a single syrian hamster in my opinon:
http://www.amazon.com/Prevue-Hendryx-SP2060R-Hamster-Bordeaux/dp/B005VEWFUS/ref=sr_1_12?ie=UTF8&qid=1377710691&sr=8-12&keywords=hamster+cage
i took one of the levels and houses off, and put a big silent wheel on the right side instead, and a small wooden maze on the ground level to the left. now, i have the happiest syrian ever.
MORE TIPS
-get a liter box! there's like little plastic bins that you attach to a corner of the cage and put critter litter on it (both can be find at any petco, petsmart, general pet store). they tend to always use the same corner for pooping, so instead of cleaning the cage every two weeks, you get to clean it every month or so. the litter box you change every few days, depending on how dirty it seems.
-the hamster must be given attention once a day. even if you don't have time to let her out for long, just hold her in your hand for a minute or two. this will help form a very strong bond. now, every time i come home, my boy tupac is always against his cage bars hoping to be pet a little. makes me so happy.
-now my number one trick in keeping a healthy hamster is a healthy, varied diet. i like to buy two different kinds of food and then alternate between those (or mixing) everytime i refill their bowl. i also make sure to get plenty of varied treats, such as honey seed clusters and yogurt drops. sometimes when i'm having something that i can give to them to eat safely, i'll also share some of my food(bread, fruits, vegetables, etc).
-8" wheel size minimum. like i said before, silent spinners are THE BEST.
-an outside-the-cage playpen would be amazing for her. it gives her the opportunity to run full speed and have some adventures.
-change her water bottle every 2 or 3 days, even if there is still water. it's good to keep it fresh for them :)
Doesn't look to be exactly the same but looks very similar to this one: https://www.amazon.co.uk/d/Cages-Pens-Small-Animals/Little-Friends-TK50117-Hamberley-All-Metal/B005CAY8QA
I've just bought a similar one (https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00GO0K80W) to get ready for new rats and I think they're going to love it.

I used big towels at first to potty train her. And a used shirt of mine to sleep in so she would get use to my scent. Now I only have her sleep pouch in the cage.
Really? I mean with the cages connected they have WAY more space than they would have in a 10 gal tank. Also, I figured since mice were burrowing critters they would like the tubes. They aren't small cages, I have three of these attached with lots of tunnels with lookouts and hidey holes between: https://www.amazon.com/Kaytee-Critter-Trail-Habitat-360/dp/B00DDPCK8O/
It's a good 14.5" in diameter, giving them 166 sq in per cage where as a 10 gal would give them 200, but they would not have the extra areas from the connected cages. Sadly, I don't have room to go for anything with a bigger footprint, like a 20 gal tank.
I'm definitely open for feedback on husbandry though. Thanks
TLDR
What about this one? HERE
I think I may have linked the wrong one, the one in my pet store is Kaytee Brand
https://www.amazon.ca/Kaytee-First-Home-Habitat-12-Inch/dp/B00CETSQ74/ref=dp_ob_title_pet
But I don't know if that's much better. I may just keep him in what he has until I can find a decently priced tank. They're hard to come by in my town.
They will once or twice but that won't be a problem as long as they have access to wood chews. Nobody likes chomping metal :)
My first cage was this one: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00GO0K80W/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_8nftDbM6QVWC0
I used it to house 4 girls by removing 1 of the floors for more vertical play space. Depending on where you are it may not be available but it should give you a rough idea on size. Again I cannot stress full front doors, which this model lacks, just for ease of cleaning. I upgraded this year to a Savic Royale 95 for about 2x the cost of the original cage but the build quality was well worth the investment, wish I had gone for it in the first instance.
This cage is cheaper for a reason. I urge anyone who has this cage to please, please, please install pans (if they don't make them, just improvise) onto the levels so the ferrets are not walking on wires. Walking on these wires their whole lives will mess up their feet and spines. I am currently witnessing the effects of wire cages on an elderly rat who is having a bad time with his spine and is dragging his hind legs from being raised on wire grates. His feet constantly get stuck in the wires and this type of design is just not good for the health of any animal.
I have and highly recommend the MidWest Ferret Nation cage. The single unit will be enough for two ferrets and is worth the money. The double unit will provide that much more room and will ultimately make happier ferrets. Ferrets love to run around, climb, generally be silly and extra room to play is never a bad thing if you can afford it.
The pans also make cleaning that much easier. Poop and food do not get flung all over the place as I imagine it would in a wire cage. Cleaning up after ferrets is hard enough. Why make it more difficult?

Believe me, this really is the better option. Especially when you're already spending near that amount on a cage. Your ferrets will thank you.
Hey guys. Thought I'd do an update. :) http://www.amazon.com/Kaytee-First-Home-Habitat-12-Inch/dp/B00CETSQ74 Got this home for now (from petco) as they are still little babies. It was the only home designed for rats available in my area. I plan on using this as a travel cage in the future. Anyways, I will order a nice cage for them shortly such as these ones for when they are adults.

I don't remember the brand, but it's similar to this one:

It has the under floor tray and the 2 piece plastic floor which can easily be removed for cleaning.

Though you didn't ask, I'll volunteer: Be very careful when giving your ferret(s) toys to play with. Avoid anything made of foam, for example; chewed pieces can get caught in their intestinal tract and cause serious problems. For similar reasons, avoid anything that has pieces which can be chewed off (e.g., a plastic eye); anything with plastic bits (like ribbons); and all kinds of squeaky toys and things made of thin rubber. Good toys: Cardboard tubes and boxes. Ping-pong balls. Super Thru-Way. Cotton rope toys. Large towels. Small cotton unadorned stuffed animals.

Have fun decorating her new home!
That cage is too small for two dwarf hamsters. That cage is too small for one dwarf hamster. What's important is floor space, and that cage has nearly none. It's very gimmicky and looks appealing to people, but it's not a good cage for the hamster.
See if getting a bigger cage helps--- it doesn't matter how tall it is, extra floors add play space, not cage space :) Look for a tank that's at least equivalent to a 10g fish tank, a 15g fish tank would be better for two boys. Boys especially need a large habitat so they have their own "space" in it if they need it.
I've never had a problem with ventilation in an aquarium tank, as long as you clean the habitat on a regular basis. Dwarf hamsters especially don't urinate as much as Syrians due to their being from desertlike areas where water is scarce. But if you prefer to go with a wire cage, just make sure it has enough floor space. This one is a good size, as is this. Please note that I am not saying those particular cages are good, I have no experience with them and do not like the half-floors as hamsters are dumb and will walk right off of them. But those cage sizes are good.
