looks like amazon has some. not too expensive either. dont think they are quite the same as the mini display ones, but fairly close at least.

i would much rather a tiny Coleman with the logo and everything though. cause its much funnier.

I trained Rocky the EXACT same way I trained my dog growing up, and he responded beautifully.

He used to do the normal rabbit habit (lol that's a rhyme) of chewing on cords and/or remote control buttons, but I did what I did with my dog growing up:

I put him on the couch with wires and remote controls in reach, and, every time he would make a move towards them, I'd say in a strict, sharp voice "NO!"

Then, as soon as he backed away from the remote/cord (or didn't attack it), I'd lavish him with praise and rubbies/pets.

Afte a while, he learned the routine, and now he no longer destroys stuff besides his toys.

If your rabbit is a big chewer, definitely keep a stock of Timothy Hay Cubes on hand (if you don't already!).

This "like a dog" training also helped me to teach Rocky to learn/know his name, come when called, etc...

Further, make sure to always push the "comfort zone" boundaries with your bun. I've constantly held and played and messed and rubbed and grabbed Rocky in every conceivable way every single day, to the point where he now knows that I can mess with him to no end and it'll never cause him harm, so I can do whatever I want to him.

He lets me do it all, even stuff most rabbits tend not to enjoy, like he loves when I hold and massage and rub his back feet/toes!

Picked it up at my local pet store but it’s sold on various places online, here’s a link to one on Amazon:

These are all cages that are an appropriate size. You can also look up DIY bin cages or get a 30 gallon tank.

You really want to have 4-6 inches of bedding for burrowing purposes.

u/smellytoots · 8 pointsr/guineapigs

First, thank you so much for taking the little guy in and going to the trouble to learn about how to give him a good life and take care of him! Ok now for a novel...

You are on the right track about needing a bigger cage, I don't know what kind of cages you are looking at, but I recommend C&C cages. They are really great, and if you find yourself having a bit more room, you can always expand them. My two pigs are in this one: http://www.guineapigcagesstore.com/candc-cage-deluxe-wide-large and they love it.

Also, you are right that they are social animals. You should try to get him a little buddy if you can! Do not get this little buddy from a pet store though because A) pet stores are notorious for not only poor treatment and health of guinea pigs, they are terrible at sexing them, and you could end up with a lot more pigs that you bargained for :) and B) there are LOTS of guinea pigs in need of adoption at shelters and rescues because, as you can see, people ditch them without a second thought.

For food, he should have lots and lots of hay, timothy is most common, but occasionally I buy orchard grass as well, and plain pellets without seeds or fruit or anything in it. I buy Oxbow brand for hay and pellets. Guinea pig pellets have Vitamin C in them, which is why you shouldn't give them rabbit pellets or food for some other small animal, even if it looks the same. He should always have fresh water, in a bowl is fine if you don't have a bottle yet. Fresh veggies should be given often, this is their other source of Vit C, my girls love lettuce, bell peppers, cucumber and carrots. Fresh fruit can also be given occasionally, but you don't want to give it as often. my girls get a couple of strawberry tops a week and occasionally the end of a banana. You also want to be careful not to give them too many veggies that are high in calcium, like kale, because they can develop stones. They can have them occasionally, just not all the time. Most treats at a pet store aimed at guinea pigs are also not really good for them, such as yogurt treats and seed sticks. Your pig will be ecstatic about veggies, so don't feel like you're depriving him of anything :)

Guinea pigs are prey animals, so they are very good at hiding pain and illness, which is why it's good practice to weigh them often, as change in weight is often an indication of something being wrong. Generally keep an eye on their eating habits, poop, and drinking habits, so you will notice when something changes and can take them to a vet if something is wrong. If you do suspect something is wrong, don't hesitate to go to the vet. A guinea pig's health can decline really quickly, so time is often of the essence.

For toys, make sure he has something to hide in, like a house or igloo. He should also have stuff to chew on, mine have a log like this and they love it. Tubes are a huge hit with pigs, big ones that they can run through, and toilet paper rolls that they can toss around and chew on. You can also stuff some hay into a toilet paper tube to really blow your pig's mind.

I'm sorry this is so long, but I hope it has helped, and I hope you enjoy your new pig! They are really endearing creatures :) Feel free to message me if you have questions as well.

For Syrians, you'll want a bigger wheel (at least 10"). These are all popular options (assuming you're in the U.S.):

  • https://www.exoticnutrition.com/Products/Silent-Runner-Wheel-12-(Wide)__43674.aspx (my personal favorite)

  • https://www.amazon.com/Wodent-Wheel-Senior-Tail-Shield/dp/B01MRWR7MQ (I have this one as well and it's good)

  • https://www.etsy.com/shop/CarolinaStorm (I've never tried these but I've seen them recommended as well)

For Syrians, I'd say bare minimum floor space is 650 sq. inches, but larger is always better (some countries recommend twice that). If you're in the U.S., it's virtually impossible to find a large enough cage, so many people go the DIY route using bins or other creative options. For example, using the IKEA Detolf will provide 1,082 sq inches of floor space (and is cheaper than most large cages anyway).

You'll also want to give him a sand bath AND a separate sand area for a litter box. (So two sand areas). Child's play sand (available at hardware stores) is a great cheap option, but this is often recommended as well: https://www.amazon.com/Supreme-Tiny-Friends-Chinchilla-Bathing/dp/B005OCXN1M

Rather than getting a hamster ball, it's generally preferable to hamster-proof a room (or block off part of a room) and allow them free-roaming time as often as you can. It's great exercise, lets them explore, and presents an opportunity for you to have fun interactions (let them run around and tire themselves out first, though).

u/owlrecluse · 8 pointsr/RATS

Do you have a rough budget? also im sorry for the novel
The typical and most suggested cage is a critter nation (a single can work for 2 or 3). You can sometimes find them or similar cages on craigslist, or find them cheaper on other sites.
You can also use several Martin brands, here's a breakdown of all of the versions you can get.. I've heard that they can be a bit annoying to clean, since most of them only have one door that opens, as compared to the critter nation with its double doors, but they're a reliable cage.
You could probably even use a Petco or Petsmart brand one, such as the Rat Manor, but that only holds 2 rats. So if you wanted to expand your mischief, you'd need an upgrade.
The most important thing at the moment is that they cant escape.
This is a good cage in general but the bar spacing is good for younger rats, and its a bit bigger than a single critter nation.
Here's a general listing of good cages for rats as well. but make sure to do your own research on them, as they suggest the aquarium topper which isnt a good one. The bar spacing needs to be at least 1/2" for babies.

  • The most suggested food is oxbow if youre in the USA. you're also going to have to feed them a small portion of fresh fruits and veggie every other day or so (but you can also give cheerios and stuff as treats, they can eat almost anything tbh).

  • they're going to need hides, hammocks, toys etc. you can usually make them yourself with fleece, some sewing, or cardboard boxes. Many bird toys and small animal advertised toys and stuff are fine.

  • decide what kind of bedding youre going to use. If youre going to use loose bedding like this, consider getting a cage with a deep pan. If you're going to use fleece, consider if you're going to litter train them or not, or sew absorbent liners. Most people recommend fleece.

  • rats need to chew because their teeth grow forever. so theyre going to need wood toys or lava ledges.

Here are some good cages.. Just to give you an idea.
They will need to see the vet at least a few times in its life. So be prepared to find an exotics vet and start saving. Imo, you dont need to take them like you would a dog, once a year or whatever, but if they start breathing funny or get hurt it's difficult to treat that kind of stuff by yourself.
uuuuuuuuuuuu its usually cheaper to buy food and stuff in store so find a pet supplies plus, or a petco/smart. You're also going to need to clean the cage about once a week or so. You can use a small animal cage cleaner such as Nature's Miracle, or use a dilute mix of vinegar and water.
And yes, you're going to need a friend if you decide to keep them.
I think that's a good basic rundown of what you're gonna need eventually. If you dont deck them out like immediately they'll live, so theres no huge rush.
Oh, and keep an eye on their health. make sure their breathing is fine and that they dont have lice or fleas (they'll have a lot of scabs on their ears and shoulders and tail). Rats are very prone to respiratory infections.
u/snukb · 8 pointsr/hamsters

I'm assuming that when you say she gets carrots to chew on, you mean among other things. Carrots, if given in the amounts necessary for active chewers, would give your hammie diarrhea. She needs other safe chew alternatives, like safe wood, raw shelled nuts (NO ALMONDS), or edible chews from the pet store.

I'd also recommend replacing that wheel with something with a solid surface, like a Wodent Wheel, Silent Spinner, or Flying Saucer.

One of my favorite toys for cage boredom is a simple toilet paper tube, stuff a bit of non-perishable treats in the middle (like Cheerios, sunflower seeds, dried peas, etc) and the stuff the rest with shredded paper or hay. Wrap paper around it and twist the ends like a giant wrapped hard candy, and give to your hammie. They have to shred the outside to get to the treats inside, and they can use the leftover paper as nesting material.

u/csmith2019 · 6 pointsr/ferrets

No that is absolutely terrible for him. Corn, gluten, rice, wheat are not biologically appropriate for him.
This is one of the best foods you can give him Wysong Ferret Epigen 90 Digestive Support - Dry Ferret Food - 5 Pound Bag https://www.amazon.com/dp/B019W9VXZK/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_J8sDDbJTEZD49

Just mix it in very slowly until he’s used to it. Only add a little more each day to slowly shift the ratio towards the new food.

u/kigan · 6 pointsr/RATS

I assume you are in the US. If you can't upgrade for now can I suggest you get a wire topper that converts the aquarium and gives it some extra space?

Like this http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B0027J381U/ref=mp_s_a_1_16?qid=1463269546&sr=8-16&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_QL65&keywords=rat+cage

But still this is too small, I would really suggest you get a large wire cage instead

u/larryruger · 6 pointsr/ferrets

I was in the same position about a month a go. I feed my fuzzies: Wysong Ferret Epigen 90 Digestive Support - Dry Ferret Food. I just started mixing it with the old food 1/2 & 1/2 for a few days reducing the Marshal food little by little until they were eating just the Wysong Epigen, The switch when seamless.

u/j3nn14er · 5 pointsr/RATS

And each rat has their own preferences when it comes to treats, explore a range of fruits, veggie, yogurt, jams, crackers... do basic research (nothing too acidic). Plenty people on here make their own hammocks and sleeping areas, I've personally bought maybe 5 of https://www.amazon.com/eCOTRITION-Snak-Edible-Activity-Large/dp/B004UMMXDG these (sorry, mobile, I don't link right). Perfect of sleeping in plus its edible and good for keeping claws/teeth trimmed.

It looks like this one (yellow) and I think this one (grey). Exotic Nutrition Silent Runners are freaking fantastic. I use the 9in. one for my mouse, and it's so quiet, but it took just a little bit of olive oil on the screw in the back, at least for me.

> For those who are wondering... http://www.amazon.com/One-Fast-Cat-Exercise-Wheel/dp/B00NFZMHKS

Thanks, guy!

u/bruxbuddies · 5 pointsr/PetMice

You shouldn't feel bad - you definitely saved him from a terrible fate on the streets! An albino mouse that is OK with you handling him is almost certainly domestic. Likely someone didn't want to care for him anymore and just set him loose. It's very sad because they will either die of exposure (they won't know how to find good shelter), or most likely a cat, hawk, or any other predator will eat him.

I would monitor him and see if he appears healthy. Domestic mice generally don't carry the same diseases as wild mice, and if he was friendly and looks to be in good condition (clear open eyes, smooth fur, no wet spot under tail, etc.), then maybe he was only released (or escaped) earlier that day. I found a domestic hamster once in our neighborhood, so it does happen!

It is always good to have a vet check on him if you can. If the vet confirms it's a boy, then he will need to live alone. Male mice fight.

He will enjoy a wheel like a Silent Spinner or Flying Saucer, a water bottle (not a dish, which gets dirty), and toys like paper towel tubes, small cardboard boxes, a large stick to climb on, etc. He will need a place to sleep that is something like an overturned cardboard box with a hole cut out, or you can buy one. I recommend a lab block like Oxbow young rat and mouse, and supplement with some bird seed occasionally (no dried corn). For cages, a tank like a 20-gallon tank with a mesh lid is the best. For bedding I would recommend either EcoEarth (it helps combat the smell), or Vitakraft paper crumbles, with something like Klean and Kozy for burrowing. Males do have a musk so he will be a little stinky, and need his cage cleaned once a week.

Share a pic if you can, and update us. I hope you keep him and enjoy him!

These are my top three choices. A popular wheel is the kaytee silent spinner as a 6.5 inches. I’ve listed the bigger ones as sometimes the 6.5 isn’t big enough and can lead to a hunch back or other problems. While they seem pretty large, I can promise you that your hammy will be able to move them, they just may need to adjust to a larger size.

This one is great, not expensive at all but it isn’t exactly “silent”.

A really helpful resource is a rat cage calculator like this one

Second, if you're really on a budget, I highly recommend looking into cages for other animals like ferrets, chinchillas, sugar gliders, or birds. For some reason, I've found that rat cages seem to charge a premium. Use the rat cage calculator to check for size.

One option is this small animal cage on Amazon for $47.95 that can hold 2 rats (not any more).

Keep an eye on Craigslist and local buy/sell/trade Facebook groups and you can sometimes find a good deal on a secondhanP cage.

A big consideration is bar spacing. If your rats are full grown males they can probably not get through 1" spaces, but any younger or smaller rats need no more than 1/2" spacing. The cage I linked above has 3/8" which is fine. If you do find an inexpensive cage with large wire bar spacing, you can solve that by wrapping the cage in hardware cloth. For example, this hardware cloth from Home Depot it's only like $9 a roll and would work just fine. It's not the prettiest or most elegant solution but certainly gets the job done. If you find a super cheap secondhand cage, that can really save you a lot of money.

Finally, don't forget that rats should not be walking on bare wire shelves or ladders, or they can get sores on their feet called bumblefoot. You will need to cover the wire in some way. Many people use fleece, but it's best to place an absorbent layer underneath the fleece such as a packing blanket. Plan to change the fleece frequently, as it doesn't absorb urine and the ammonia can build up quickly and irritate your rat's respiratory system even if you can't smell it yourself. Fleece should be changed at least every 3 days.

Personally I ditched all the ramps in my rat's cages and bought rope dog chew toys from the dollar store for them to climb on. They like the challenge much better than the ramps anyway. Also at the dollar store you can get little baskets and containers for your rats to hide and sleep in. No need to spend a lot on rat-specific items. Get a dollar store package of zip ties to attach everything. Speaking of hanging things, I use these shower hooks from Amazon to hang everything and at 50 rings for like $6 they're a great deal, plus the points get covered when you close them.

Okay, that was long but good luck! Also I'd avoid Wish, they charge a fortune for shipping. Have fun!!

u/Seal_Point_Lop · 4 pointsr/Rabbits

I have one of these...

It works perfectly Barney. It doesn't hurt his feet either. He won't use the bathroom anywhere else but in it. He's a free-roaming rabbit and will hop all the way from the other end of the house to use it. I bought the biggest one they had. I clean it with vinegar occasionally but usually only need to dump/refill it every 2 days. It locks into place so he can't manhandle or bunhandle it.

u/Steel_Sieve · 3 pointsr/Rabbits

My rabbit eats blankets, so you might want to watch out for that with yours. On the litter tray - one made for a cat should work well (it should be small enough your bunny can hop in, and large enough for her to do a full turn around in AND have a wad of timothy hay). You might have to try a few different things for lining it - I usually use the pine pellets from Tractor Supply Company that are intended for horses (https://www.tractorsupply.com/tsc/product/tractor-supply-pine-pellet-stall-bedding-40-lb?cm_vc=-10005) and shake hay-dust over the pellets, then put a big wad of hay at one end for my bunny to eat. I've had people mention that pine and rabbits can be iffy though (apparently they absorb something from it that makes it so their liver doesn't react well to certain medications), so you might want to try some kind of paper bedding in the litter box instead. I've used this before and it does seem to keep the pee odor down, but my rabbit likes to eat it (which is why I switched to the pine pellets): https://www.amazon.com/Carefresh-Complete-Pet-Bedding-Natural/dp/B00PBM6WHW

u/NLothe · 3 pointsr/parrots

I bought it in Amazon, the brand that I like is The Aviator . It’s a very good brand.

u/sierramarie3992 · 3 pointsr/guineapigs

You could try hiding bits of veggie in things (like a toilet paper tube with the ends folded in) and let them try to get it out. Or something like this http://www.amazon.com/Trixie-Snack-Board-Rabbits-Guinea/dp/B0054VEWB8/ref=sr_1_1?s=pet-supplies&ie=UTF8&qid=1463495171&sr=1-1&keywords=treat+board+guinea+pig the guinea pig has to lift the top off with his/her mouth to get the veggie or treat out. This one http://www.amazon.com/Living-World-Teach-Treat-Toy/dp/B004HYW9B8/ref=sr_1_13?s=pet-supplies&ie=UTF8&qid=1463495372&sr=1-13&keywords=living+world+guinea+pig requires the pig to push the lids off around the circle to get the treat. I haven't tried these yet but I really want to! From my experience, guinea pigs are only motivated to do things if food is involved lol.

u/speakstruth · 3 pointsr/Rabbits

Technically rabbits don't need pellets. Pellets are really just ground up hay with added supplements and fillers. The hay is what's more concerning to me.

What do her poops look like? Here's our photo guide to determining healthy rabbit poops. So long as her poops don't look small and/or stringy, she might be getting enough fiber from her veggies and I wouldn't overly worry about it.

How long have you had her?

I suggest leaving hay around and perhaps tossing some herbs - either dried or fresh - into the mix to encourage her to eat. Fresh dandelion (make sure they haven't been sprayed with pesticides) can also be very tempting. Some bunnies also really like hay blocks (basically pressed hay). I have no idea why this is different to them than non-pressed hay but they seem to treat them more like treats than the stuff in the litter box.

You might also want to add in some hay supplements to increase her fiber intake and if you're worried about her nutritional content. The oxbow ones are pretty good and my rabbits tend to think they're treats as well.

What kinds of hay have you tried? Some rabbits are picky eaters. If you've tried timothy, perhaps orchard or oat would be good options? Oat shouldn't be a "main" hay but might be a good starting point to introduce the concept.

I wouldn't recommend letting her get into the water. Rabbits rely on their undercoat staying dry in order to maintain their body temperature. Once the undercoat is wet, they lose that insulation and can easily die of pneumonia. Make sure to dry her off very thoroughly if she does end up getting wet.

Good luck!

u/tpr0218 · 3 pointsr/RATS

Even if you cant afford a critter nation, petsmart has something like this that my fiance and I were looking at and amazon has this. I would highly recommend you lay down some fleece blankets as a form of bedding if you get a wire cage like that. They can get their little rattie toes stuck or sprain something and that could be really painful for one of your little guys.

My fiance and I are planning on getting our girls a new cage within the next couple weeks, if you'd like I can keep you posted, since we are certainly working with a budget.

u/Snazzy_Serval · 3 pointsr/CatTaps
u/panda0614 · 3 pointsr/hamsters

There's a lot of options! With a bigger cage, you'll definitely see an improvement in your hamster's behavior. It's recommended that the cage size be around 450 sq inches of uninterrupted floor space, so you'd prob want the cage size to be about 600 sq inches.

If you're feeling crafty:

  1. Bin cage (cheap) - take a cheap plastic storage bin, cut a large square out of the lid, add some wire mesh to the hole to provide fresh air for the hamster, and you've got a cage.

  2. Rabbit cage (this is what I did) - rabbit cages are generally a good size for hamsters, but the bars are often spaced too far apart so you'll need to add some mesh around the outside so the hamster can't escape.

There's also fish tanks that you can use or some people buy an Ikea detolf cabinet (~$50) and lie it on its side. If you have some money to spend, there's a few (very few) hamster cages that are an adequate size for a hamster. This is the only one that I know of (and it's a little pricey), but maybe you can find something else:
    https://www.amazon.com/Lixit-Animal-Care-Hamster-Heaven/dp/B003QRPAR2/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1523494327&sr=8-2&keywords=huge+hamster+cage

Also, for a syrian, it's recommended that you have an 11-12" wheel!!
u/throwaqw · 3 pointsr/gerbil

Hey! Your new gerbils are very adorable :)

The cage you have now is a good starter cage, but should not be used for long term housing. Gerbils are desert animals, meaning they are better suited in an environment in which they can burrow. My suggestion is a simple 10 gallon tank for now. 10 gallons is the recommended size for two gerbils, 20 gallons for 3, you get the point. Just go to your local pet store and buy a 10 gallon tank and a tank lid (these should be in the reptile section). Then fill it with ASPEN bedding. Pine and Cedar are deadly to gerbils, because the dust from them will affect their respiratory systems. If you want, you can get a tank topper to expand the size of their cage like this one: http://www.amazon.com/Chew-Proof-Sm-High-Rise/dp/B0027J381U/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1406524528&sr=8-2&keywords=gerbil+tank

Gerbils will chew the living day light out of those plastic stairs, which they could ingest and have some serious medical consequences.

Something that you probably know, but is always good to reiterate, and is different for all gerbils, give them time to settle in. Lots of gerbil related fatal diseases are stress induced, so make sure they have a week or two to get situated, and then introduce yourself by hand feeding them treats, like pumpkin seeds.

Good luck with your new buddies. You'll love them as much as I love mine :)

I did have to mix it in with the Marshall food they give the ferrets at petco. I just mixed it 50/50 and gradually added less of the Marshall food. It took about 2 weeks to get them off the Marshall food.

Love her color makes her look like a teeny Syrian! She’s a dwarf so I don’t think I need to say anything about a wheel just don’t go super tiny. Make sure she has a proper size cage. Big cages are the best make sure its atleast 24” length 12” width and 12” height. Clear bins are good for you too see her I’d recommend! Cut holes in her lit so she can breath and can’t escape, either cut 60+ half an inch holes or cut a big square off the lid (if you have a cat or curious dog do the hole lid) do not use pine or cedar bedding. Any paper bedding is good I recommend carefresh (Cheaper on Amazon) do not use mesh wheels!!! Your ham will get hurt and get bumble feet not good. No bathing in water. It’s not necessary but it’s highly recommend to get sand for your hamster to bathe in, she’ll either roll around in it herself or you can hold her and give her a sand bath. I like most plastic wheels, wouldn’t recommend wooden wheels for a dwarf since my friend has a wooden wheel for her ham and he can’t even move it so she had to pay for a plastic one. Chews are good for her teeth so they don’t grow too long. Clip her nails if you can, if you can’t go to a vet when you notice them getting long. Plastic tubes and empty paper tubes are good boredom breakers. Clean the cage fully once a month with a one part water one part vinegar solution and change the bedding monthly. Lastly a hideout so she can scurry away. I’ll leave some links, good luck!

Best one is carefresh in my opinion... https://www.amazon.com/Carefresh-Complete-Pet-Bedding-Natural/dp/B00PBM6WHW/ref=lp_17377176011_1_1?srs=17377176011&ie=UTF8&qid=1541085411&sr=8-1&th=1 It is the most absorbent, quite cheap, made of non dusty recycled paper. All the wood shavings (btw pine shavings are toxic to bunnies!) are much less absorbant and you will need a lot more of them. Newspaper will not absorb enough either in my experience and bunny will end up with on fur which can result in urine scald.

Always have hay on one side of the litter box or right next to it in a rack as bunnies like to poop and eat and will poop where there is the most hay basically.

I have multiple of these: Choco Nose H128 Water Bottle https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00S1SY1X0/

They don't drip or leak. They are easy to put anywhere in our cage. They are easy to clean. And they are VERY quiet, which is good because the fuzzles cage is in my girls' room.

u/CorbinDallasMyMan · 3 pointsr/RATS

The slightly taller cage is a Feisty Ferret. The interior dimensions are only slightly bigger than the single unit Critter Nation.

Feisty Ferret: 13.5 cubic feet

Critter Nation: 11.25 cubic feet

Personally, I think the Critter Nation cages are better designed. Not only is the bar spacing better but the Critter Nation also has the double doors so the full front of the cage opens for easy access. The only advantage that the Feisty Ferret has is the height. With the single unit Critter Nation, you have to kneel down or bend over every time you want to open the doors. Compared to the ugliness and difficulty of cleaning that adding hardware cloth will cause for the Feisty Ferret, I think bending down isn't so bad (and you can always pick up an add-on unit for the Critter Nation if you want to turn it into a double).

u/SamusAran388 · 3 pointsr/parrots

I haven't personally tried this brand, but it's sold as a flight suit and a birdie diaper. I feel uncomfortable making my bird wear a diaper so I use the aviator harness.

u/gigarob · 3 pointsr/ferrets

I feed my girl this mixed half and half: Wysong Ferret Digestive Support and Orijen Cat and Kitten. It's healthy and she seems to really like it and she seldom has bad poos (all ferrets have occasional jelly poos).

My old guy, who passed away several years ago, had digestive issues his whole life and the Wysong really helped him a lot.

u/suzepie · 3 pointsr/chinchilla

We have the Critter Nation for our boys, and it's marvelous. We started out with the standard two-level cage, then later bought a third level to add on. It's now absolutely enormous and they love it. There's so much room for running around and playing, sleeping, eating, and getting away from each other if they need to.

One of our chins is older and also missing part of one of his feet (a deformity he came to us with), and we wanted to make sure he wasn't forced to jump when he wasn't feeling as bouncy as usual, so we kept the shelves and ramps that come with this set-up. We got two sets of fleece covers for the shelves (the unit comes with a set of ramp covers; shelf covers are sold separately), which are easy to keep clean - we just swap them out and launder them. To add to the ease of cleaning, it's simple to "quarantine" your chins to one level of the cage by blocking the access hole to other levels while you're cleaning them.

Our setup would work beautifully for a large family like yours. Even if you go with the two-level version, I'd recommend the Critter Nation over the Ferret Nation. The space between the bars is narrower (less chance of a little leg slipping through or getting caught somehow) and the bar setup is primarily horizontal rather than vertical, allowing you to add shelves, platforms, toys, etc. much more easily.

We were lucky enough to find our Critter Nation in person and on sale at PetSmart over a year ago, then ordered the add-on unit through Amazon (Drs. Foster and Smith also has them). It's an expensive set-up, but it'll last a lifetime, and the pleasure it brings to us and our boys makes it worth every penny.

A great wheel 11inch, very quiet. The front comes off for easy cleaning. Can be hung upside down if needed (mine is upside down because wheel stands don't work great in deep bedding).

u/rockinjewfro9 · 3 pointsr/gerbil

I have a 10 gallon tank with a wire cage topper. Wire is best that way they don't eat everything that is plastic. It has worked pretty well and I think they like being able to climb.
Best I can do for a link on my phone to the topper I have:

You can get them on the Wysong site. Here for the Epigen 90 with digestive support and here for the archetype. They have decent shipping speeds, but it's like $15 dollars to ship. So I usually buy from amazon with free shipping. Epigen and rabbit

14 Rats is a tall order. I'd guess the smallest possible size for that many would be a Critter Nation triple; essentially a Critter Nation Double with another add-on floor on top of it, creating 3 floors in total. That would be pretty cramped for that many rats, so for a comfortable living space, I'd just recommend two Double Critter Nations.

Use this cage calculator if you're in doubt!

u/gingerfer · 2 pointsr/gerbil

It shouldn’t be, they’re naturally very social! The best way to introduce a second would be to look into the split cage method. If you can, separate the tank in half using wire - like a mesh screen or part of an old hamster cage - so that they can see and smell each other but not touch. You keep them like that for a while until they are comfortable and in the meantime swap toys between each side or even swap which side each critter is on until they’re comfortable with the scent.

If you can, a bigger enclosure is always better, but my girls did just fine in a 10gal for a while before I was able to upgrade. A cheaper way to get more space is a cage topper - something like this, I’ve used this one and found some similar in stores for around $20 USD. You can put the wheel and food up there and give them more room at the bottom for deeper bedding, they love to tunnel!

On that note Carefresh is a great bedding. Some people like to mix in aspen wood chips or Timothy hay for a little variety.

Your lil dude may or may not use the wheel, some gerbils love them and others are indifferent. I’ve found wooden wheels to be loud but the thinner plastic ones are chew hazards. I’m using a silent runner now (not silent spinner!) which, though still plastic, is thicker with a metal base and no exposed axle, and is extremely quiet

This would be most helpful for sure because I am drowning in little baby bunnies that are eating like crazy. They go crazy for those and it'd make them happy for sure.

u/demonlordghirahim · 2 pointsr/parrots

it's an aviator harness which is much easier to put on than a flight suit

u/kidneysforsale · 2 pointsr/RATS

Kaytee Clean and Cozy is my favorite soft paper bedding. It's kind of simlar to CareFresh, but I've found it to be superior in every way. It expands more, it's generally cheaper for the volume, and it's definitely less dusy in my experience. It won't be quite as good as fleece, because I think basically nothing other than maybe large shredded cardboard bedding would be the same.

I use fleece now for my rats cage, and in their litter boxes I've been using a mixture of Clean&Cozy and Yesterday's News, which is a pretty popular paper pellet litter. It's not soft though- literally it looks identical to my rabbits food; both my rats and my rabbits tried nibbling it when I first switched over haha. I don't think it would work well for a whole cage though; if you wanted to litter train, the two litters are different textures enough that the contrast might be helpful for box training.

I use paper litter. You can use other products. Just google if it's safe.

I generally feed my rabbit timothy hay and a mixture of salad leaves. There is information online as to which leaves are safe and what quantities are ok.

Fruits, berries, carrots, etc. are like candy to rabbits. Give these in small amounts and look up if they're safe to eat first. I usually get raspberries, blueberries, or bananas. (My rabbit is obsessed with bananas.)

It is difficult to control hay. You will have to clean a lot.

u/OttoIV · 2 pointsr/hamster

With the wheel I would just watch. If his back is bend while running then you should get a bigger one, otherwise it's fone. If you're worried with him flying out of the wheel, there are wheels where the side is closed and only some holes are in it so that the hamster can climb in but not so easily fall out :) like this, for example (it's bigger than you need, but it's just so I can illustrate what I mean xD) https://www.amazon.com/Wodent-Wheel-Senior-Tail-Shield/dp/B01MRWR7MQ
As for the sunflower head:not really. Any dried sunflower head should do. You should be able to get them from your local pet store in the aisle for birds. Oh and if your already there, grab some flax. Trust me, your hamster will go crazy for it. It's like cat mint, only that it's hamsters favourite snack xD
The sand you have sounds good. I just overlooked your sand bath 😅 Thank you for caring so much about your hamster. He will have a lovely home ❤

I got this for my guys. It's about the size of a single Critter Nation, but it's cheaper. I found mine on sale with free shipping, so you might be able to shop around a few sites. It ships to Canada though.
Only downsides of the cage are - it has just the door, not the opening front of the CN, so it's not as easy to reach some parts of the cage, and the bars are vertical rather than horizontal so it gives you less options of how/where to hang things. Other than that it has been a great cage.

u/lo-lee-ta · 2 pointsr/Rabbits

Does she gnaw because she wants out, or because she's bored? My bunny will shake her cage in the morning to be let out, and in general because we let her out on the bed once and now she always want to go on the bed. Sadly the playpen blocks her way and we don't want her on the bed :p

Do you have hanging chew toys to kind of distract her from the areas of the pen she usually gnaws at?

Cat toys work well for buns. I use this or this. I don't necessarily like loading her up with treats so I just pour some of her dinner pellets into these.

u/dredla · 2 pointsr/gif
u/iAmSpAKkaHearMeROAR · 2 pointsr/Rabbits

Yes. I personally prefer this stuff because it is mostly dust-free and does a great job at absorbing and not stinking... I like the non-scented variety.

Edit to add: Carefresh is nice but this is comparable in a pinch.

I like to put the pellets in the bottom of the litter pan and then put some white fluffy stuff on top. It helps with the cost but I do it because the white fluff helps me to monitor bun's urine color and watch for sudden potential changes in wellness.

u/ercase86848 · 2 pointsr/Rabbits

On top of what everyone else says, this helps keep my buns busy. I try to always have one around for them to chew instead of my baseboards. But know it does get better with time. Just make sure you are nicely telling him no. Don't yell at him though. I ask mine "What are you doing" and then gently shoo them away, then tell them in a happy voice that they are good boys for listening to me. That way they aren't afraid of you but still understand that your word is the rules.

u/Gnomeish · 2 pointsr/gerbil

Perhaps something like this?

I've seen these metal aquarium cage toppers around and it seems like it might be a good solution. It gives them a lot more space to run around by extending the whole thing upwards and stops them from escaping at the same time.

Personally, I have an Ikea Hacked Detolf cage for my two gerbils that I love. It's just the shelf without the middle put in place and the entire thing turned on its side. I have a metal grate piece I put on top to stop them from escaping. Gives them a HUGE area to run. Not portable, of course.

I would also suggest perhaps looking into getting a second gerbil. Unlike hamsters, they are VERY social. With a little lady buddy, she might be less stressed when you are out so much and may spend less of her day chewing her way out to try and escape.

u/notahentailoli · 2 pointsr/hamsters

i found the cage on amazon the wheel is 7.5 inches lol

u/austens · 2 pointsr/hamstercare

Her cage looks great! It really shows that you put effort into research before buying her, so let's get her feeling a bit more comfortable in her new surroundings. If you've only had her for a few days, she could still be adjusting to scents and her new enclosure. My hamsters were really sweet the first few days and then realized that they were in my house for keeps and started to lash out, so have patience.

Can she get on/off the wheel with the green ceramic house there? She might be having trouble accessing it. I would also maybe get another wheel (as in two wheels in her enclosure) in case that is not her favorite - I am a fan of flying saucers as well. The one I linked should be the right one for her.

It doesn't look like she has any chew toys. The big log bundle she could use, but that could be too big for her to comfortably bite. When I adopted my dwarf hamster, the rescue suggested walnuts in shell as a boredom buster. You use a screwdriver to break a couple of small holes and then she'll be able to work her way through to get to the meat. You can also invest in some sweet potato sticks - our little guy LOVES his potatoes.

As for her bedding, I love that you included hay and aspen bedding but our vet recommended we use some natural paper bedding, like this one. She said there's a risk of skin or eye irritation and we didn't want to risk that.

May I ask what food you have for her? Any other treats? Just make sure there is NO molasses or sugar in what you are feeding her because dwarf hamsters are prone to diabetes. I'm also asking about treats because I really loved to spoil my little ones and encourage them into my hand/not to bite by rewarding them with little seeds or millet.

u/BPKrieg · 2 pointsr/AnimalTextGifs

This here is pretty much the best wheel you can get for any rodent:

Of course you have to get the correct size for the type of hamster and cage.

My Hamsters loved it and where never in danger of injury.

One downside is, that you will have to clean it on a regular basis if your hamster pees in it a lot.

I'd say either Wysong, raw, or most premium kitten food! From my knowledge Blue Buffalo works well if you're going the kitten food route, and can also be found at most pet stores easily (Or, if you're lucky, it can be found at a grocery store), just be sure whatever you get doesn't have grain. Wysong is the best specifically ferret food I know of and can be found on Amazon ( https://www.amazon.com/Wysong-Ferret-Epigen-Digestive-Support/dp/B019W9VXZK/ref=sr_1_2?keywords=ferret&qid=1554951902&s=pet-supplies&sr=1-2 ), and I'm afraid I know little to nothing about raw feeding, but heard its an ideal ferret diet, but Wysong also offers a raw option (Chicken: https://www.amazon.com/Wysong-Ferret-Archetype-Chicken-Formula/dp/B00L72JUYC/ref=sr_1_46?keywords=ferret&qid=1554953171&s=pet-supplies&sr=1-46 )! u/UrbanDryad · 1 pointr/gifs

I just want to second what u/xanaxiss mentioned. It starts with the food. I feed my pair Wysong and put this in their water daily. You can't smell them unless you pick them up and hold them 6" from your face.

And if you drizzle this stuff on their food they will eat anything. Sawdust. Broken glass. Doesn't matter. Ferret crack right there.

Oh, and don't try to clean the ferret. They just make more oil the more you bathe them. Put a ton of bedding in their cage. At least a few different kinds of hammock. I also throw in a wadded up blanket or two. (Go buy fleece fabric remnants at a fabric store. Super cheap.) They rub the oil from their coat off onto the bedding and they stay clean. Wash the bedding at least once a week on hot with bleach, add vinegar to the rinse water like fabric softener. Bathe no more than once a month with a ferret specific shampoo. In between you can hit them with a freshening spray if desired.

and last but not least. Buy TWO water bottles in case one of them jams overnight you DO NOT want your hamster to suffer from dehydration. They do not need much water, but when they need it, they need it fast or will get sick quick. The kaytee water bottles have issues with the spout pointing straight so buyer beware. They often dont align properly into the cage bars. But they do work and dont leak for me. u/omgpandas · 1 pointr/hamsters

A 20 gallon long aquarium at minimum is what I saw as the cheapest&easiest way to go (bin cages are hard work and not as aesthetically pleasing to me).

On amazon, though, I think this is the only cage I've lusted after that could maybe work but its pricey http://www.amazon.com/Lixit-Animal-Care-Hamster-Heaven/dp/B003QRPAR2/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1462223106&sr=8-1&keywords=lixit+hamster+cage

^Also depends on the hamster's size. I have seen some massive syrian hamsters in pet stores, while mine was much smaller (but grew out of her 6" wheel pretty quickly so add in some growth as you decide and when you consider wheel size). I was always worried that the tubes would be too small for my syrian and she'd get stuck XD For a syrian it's usually 8" wheel minimum, though as I said some are larger and really need that 10" or 11" wheel.

A last comment is that a hamster is not a great pet for a four year old. They're crepuscular but seem to be mostlyy active at night in my experience. And they are fragile creatures. They can overstrain and basically break their back like rabbits. With that in mind, I would hope that this is mostly your/the adult's pet that the four year old can hopefully somewhat enjoy and participate with care

edit: just saw the shipping on that cage on amazon wow haha here's free shipping at ebay though http://www.ebay.com/itm/Metro-Cage-Lixit-Hamster-and-Mouse-critter-cage-Hamster-Heaven-Brand-New-/222087857216?hash=item33b577c440:g:Yq8AAOSwhDdXEQ6E

I have a non-skyscraper version of this cage, by Critter Nation. I believe it's just identified as a double (unit) cage. Here is the link for the Amazon listing of one here in the US.

u/monkeysareeverywhere · 1 pointr/RATS

How about something like this?

I like the Martin 680, but after shipping, they're about the same price, and this one APPEARS to be more cage for the money. I'd have to put something on the floor, since from what I understand, a mesh floor is bad for rat feet.

There is also sometimes a tissue-paper-like material that is low dust.

Agree with that. Another option to check out is the M-Cage on amazon, it's listed for $47 here.

According to the RattyCorner cage calculator, it can hold two rats. Also, you could try and wait till the rat manor goes on sale (I got mine for $60 from petco's website). If you think you want more than two rats, I'd suggest saving up for a CN or even looking into the Prevue Hendryx Fiesty Ferret or Dusted Rose Chinchilla Rat cage (bar spacing can be an issue in the ferret one for some smaller rats, and the second one I mentioned is roomy but doesn't have a deep base pan and the metal shelves need to be covered or else they'll corrode).

One of my buns is like this, or rather she used to be. She still loves food, but she's not as desperate about it I suppose. It's probably because your bun is going through a transition in homes, which will most likely have different feeding times, options, etc.

The thing that has helped my Penny is a feeding schedule and a good amount of hay and greens. They have their breakfast salad around 9am and their pellets in the later afternoon. They have come to expect breakfast at a certain time now. So it's very funny to watch them assume the position to remind me if I should ever run late. They sit in a very specific spot in the living room, where I usually put the plate down and wait. But it also helps because Penny knows exactly when she will be fed now, so she doesn't have to worry about when's the next time she'll get food. I think this helps keep her leveled out.

As for your bun getting access to the trash and such - maybe get a trash can with a swing lid? And obviously get human food out of his reach.

My buns love chewing on those big logs you can get from PetCo. Maybe you could try one of these? My buns work together on them and they are usually chewed down to unusable bits in a month. Here is a link.

We have a hans we just bought a harness for, I believe the extra small model of the 'aviator' harness is the one we got since she's dead center in the weight range for the harness. We have an XXS for our conure, unfortunately it's a bit too small so we may be getting a second XS for her if we can convince her to engage with the one we just received.

This is what I get for my girls: ebay listing. It's vegetarian so it helps their cage not smell so quickly!

I'd also recommend this wheel if theirs ever becomes too noisy: amazon page

u/georgethecurious · 1 pointr/gerbil

Sure!

I buy practically everything on Amazon and these would be my top recommendations:

Hidey Hut - this is large enough to fit two grown gerbils and my first survived the chewing for close to 4 years.

Small Animal Pet Playpen/Exercise Pen - this is just tall enough for the jumpers. I've still had some be able to reach the top but it is a struggle and you'd be able to catch them in time. Really sturdy as well.

Kordon/Oasis (Novalek) SOA80304 Bell Bottle and Hold Guard Small Animal Value Set, 4-Ounce - this is by far my favorite recommendation of the bunch. I cannot tell you how many water bottles were just destroyed and I would come home to an empty bottle and a very wet gerbil. This thing is impenetrable!

Kaytee Hamster Silent Spinner, 6 1/2 inch Exercise Wheel - although I've had to buy a couple of these (they will chew the yellow part holding the bottom part to the wheel) I find that this is the sturdiest of them all. It becomes less silent the more they chew on it and push it around but it's never been loud enough to be considered especially annoying.

Great for cleaning cage and is safe

As far as dust baths go, I've tried several different kinds and find them all to be equivalent.

Would not recommend:

Ware Manufacturing Flying Saucer Exercise Wheel for Small Pet - the quality is fine here but if you are using carefresh, it gets buried and doesn't allow any give for it to spin.

Kaytee Woodland Get-A-Way Medium Hamster House - quality here is also fine and it's pretty thick so it would take a while to get them to chew. Since it is wood, it absorbs liquids. My gerbils would pee on it and it got to the point that it looked moldy and unhealthy so I just threw it out.

Alfie Pet by Petoga Couture - GARI Wood Hut for Small Animals like Dwarf Hamster and Mouse - Size: Large - this is the cutest little home I've ever seen. I had to eventually throw out though because the wood was so thin that the back wall collapsed due to their chewing and would no longer stand up.

Prevue Pet Products Multi-Color Small Pet Playpen 40090 - I think the quality is here too. It's just too short. My gerbils were easily able to escape this.

GreatChoice Water Bottle - chewed through in a week and Same

I switched from Carefresh Naturals to Kaytee Clean and Cozy. You can get a 1000 inch cube bag of bedding for like $11 and if your order is over $35 you get the free shipping. I bought one like 6 months ago and I've used about half the bag. You don't need that much on the bottom of the cage either. I do a 1 inch layer that is loosely compacted and even then my rats will end up moving it around the entire cage.

Also NO DUST so yay!

If you don't have one already, I'd highly suggest getting one of these. My rabbit stays way cleaner with this type of litter box.

Thanks for the advise, but she used to LOVE her ball.

The only thing we have changed is getting another hamster, but they're kept in totally different cages, opposite ends of the room (about 15 foot apart), and use different balls and are out at different times so they don't bang into each other.

And before questions are asked, the other hamster's eyes are absolutely fine.

Both hamsters are female golden syrians, the older one, with the eye problem is 7 month, the younger one without any problems is 16 weeks.

The vet normally takes about 3-4 minutes to get too but you have to book an appointment and one is not always available, and her eye can "calm down" within a minute of her cleaning herself or within 15 minutes, it depends, which is why a check-up at the vet is impractical, as it costs £15 to get her seen too, even if her eye is fine at the time or not, they could turn around and say literally "She's fine" and charge you, even if it took 10 seconds to see her.

We don't normally see her run in her wheel very often, my guess is that she does it during the night, but we have saw her once or twice and she certainly runs flat, no bending of the back.

Her cage is the biggest cage on the market so space isn't a problem at all.

Her cage: http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B003QRPAR2

Here are some photos, sorry if they aren't good enough as she kept moving but its better than nothing.

http://s12.postimage.org/52k8219r1/IMAG0033.jpg
http://s12.postimage.org/3osl6qahp/IMAG0035.jpg

She normally spends anywhere from 15 minutes, half an hour to an hour, we let her roam around the whole house, no other animals are in the house apart from the other Syrian hamster which we get out at different times.

Possibly, it would be hard, but you must not use the clumping kind. Rabbits get sick and die if they eat or inhale the dust from some kitty litters. It is probably best to just get a separate box. It would be difficult to integrate them into one they can both use. Bunnies like to munch on hay while they potty, so you will want hay in or next to the bunny box. Personally I like this one because it has a grate that keeps bunny feet clean Ware Plastic Scatterless Lock-N-Litter Bigger Pet Pan, Jumbo, Colors May Vary https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000HGB8W6/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_awd_gJuywb30ZH226 and this litter is great : Green Pet Aspen Supreme Pellets Pet and Bird All Natural Litter/Bedding https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000634C6O/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_awd_uKuywbYKCJX55

u/wow-so-tacky · 1 pointr/guineapigs

I wouldn't recommend this type of design. The gaps are too small, and it's possible that your pigs may try to climb in from the top and become stuck and/or injure themselves or worse. There are actual hay feeders with a similar design to this (such as this one) which have caused deaths for the aforementioned reasons, see low rated reviews for the one linked as proof. I'd suggest either a hay bag (there are many different types, search around) or a snak shak, or just anything that isn't super narrow with an open top like that.

u/Nosworthy · 1 pointr/chinchilla

We had never dreamed of owning a chinchilla before we did. A family friend asked us to look after theirs whilst on holiday and we grew attached to him. They didn't pay him much attention and didn't want him back so we snapped their hand off

The cage they have us was very small and cramped so we got him this one https://www.amazon.co.uk/Little-Friends-Blenheim-Extra-Accessories/dp/B005CAYUKY?ref_=fsclp_pl_dp_1

You should let him out regularly to run around the room. They are lightning fast, can jump high and have very inquisitive personalities so you might want to 'chinchilla proof' anything you don't want them to get at - we have a sideboard that he managed to climb up the back of and get stuck so now have to cover any gaps but you'll soon learn as you go. They love to chew so be prepared for that.

Otherwise, like I say, you'll pick things up as you go. I'm not really a massive animal person but love our chinchilla, they're not really cuddly animals that you can pick up and handle but have so much personality.

u/Virixiss · 1 pointr/RATS

Howdy! First off, let me thank you for doing research before you pick up your rodent friend.

First off let me get the disclaimers out of the way: If you were looking for a cheap pet, you have chosen the wrong animal. Rats have a fairly high upfront cost that begins to taper down after the first 3 months or so once the major growth period is over with. Almost any attempt to cut costs on things I'll bring up as essentials is most likely going to end up as a bad move in terms of your pet's health. There are lots of places to save some money, but what I'll lay out here is not the place. Rats are also a very short lived pet. They will live for a reasonable maximum of 3 years, so there will be heartbreak down the road.

Still interested? Good. Let's get a list going then:

  1. Rats must be kept in a group. A pair is the minimum, three or more is better. Rats are VERY social animals, and need near constant interaction for other rats to stay healthy. This isn't just about mental health either; a lone rat is more prone to infections, tumors, and mental disabilities including aggression. Keeping multiple rats is no more expensive than keeping a single rat.

  2. When looking for a cage, aim for 2 sq. feet per rat. Use this cage calculator to see if your cage is big enough. Watch your bar spacing! Rats are master escape artists, so make sure that the bars won't bend, and that you have 1/2" inch bar spacing or less. Popular starter cages include the Critter Nation Single or the Prevue Hendryx Rat/Chinchilla Cage. The Critter Nation is the most popular rat cage by far, but I can vouch for the Prevue Hendryx as easy to clean and set up.

  3. Food can get pretty complicated for a first time owner, so I'll just offer easy suggestions. Feed Mazuri , Native Earth , or Oxbow. Oxbow is the most popular and most balanced, but tends to be the most expensive in smaller bags. In bulk, (20+ pound bags) the price is all about the same. I buy large bags because it's cheaper per pound and I never worry about running out. Then again I have 5 rats, so my situation is different than yours!

  4. Lots of toys and hiding places! This is where you can save money by getting creative. Store bought rat toys can get expensive, but cardboard tubes and boxes are often free! Have one hiding place per rat plus one, preferably on different levels of the cage. Hammocks are a favorite hide for rats, as are boxes, bags, and tubes. If you want to get some store bought stuff, see if you have a bird shop in your area. Almost every toy in there that is safe for birds is going to be a blast for your rats.

  5. Find a vet that is comfortable with rats. Rats don't need shots or regular flea treatments, so finding a vet can seem odd. But eventually, something will go wrong, or one of your babies will fall ill. Having a vet who's experienced with rats or at the very least willing to learn is a godsend. I'm very lucky to have a vet that is familiar with and loves rats. Because of their size and common problems, rat visits are usually very cheap when compared to a dog or a cat. I spend no more than $45 when Juniper or Sugar have a myco flareup.

  6. Don't stop researching. Subscribe to this sub. Check the side bar. Ask questions. (Feel free to PM me, I'll help you as much as I can..) Watch videos on YouTube, like The Rat Guru. Rats are a very "addictive" pet, and it's easy to fall into an obsession with the cute little boogers.

  7. Post pictures when you get them.

Wow! Thank you so much for this guide! I will definitely keep referring back to it as I set them up.

I am not sure of their genders or reproductive status, so I will be asking the last owners. They literally just put the bunnies in this cage on their porch and said free rabbits to good home, so I have no idea. They definitely seem bonded.

I’m buying one of these for their hay, so they always have access to it. I’ll order some pellets while I’m at it.

Would one of these suffice for litter?

I’m so lucky to already have an exotic animal vet, one that does cater to rabbits, in my area. I’ve taken my snakes there before.

I just want to give these babies as good a home as I can, especially since I don’t think they were treated well at the last place. I gave them hay, fresh water, a small carrot, and some collard greens when I got home with them a couple of hours ago, and they have not stopped eating since. I’m not sure if this is just rabbit behavior or not. Either way, they’re much happier now!

I use this, or sometimes other brands depending on prices. Lots of clean cardboard gets shredded by my guys and mixes in with time. I also mix a little Timothy hay in, and provide more on the surface occasionally (but they can be allergic to hay as well).

Allergies are likely what you're seeing, which should clear up quickly once the allergen is removed. Is your current bedding Aspen?

Do consider other factors that could be bad for respiration and potentially allergens as well, such as smoke, cleaning products, scented things, etc.

oh woh! thanks so much for your great response. I end up getting this. They had the 10 gallon tanks on sale for $14 in my local store.

u/wallyTHEgecko · 0 pointsr/CasualConversation

As a petsmart employee myself, I see both sides. I absolutely understand wanting the best for your pets and wanting to get the biggest cages (I've been reported and complained about several times for refusing sales to people with too small cages/tanks), but there's also the matter of practicality. And sometimes pet store people really have no idea what they're talking about, but most of us anyway, we do actually spend a lot time working with the animals and hearing about people's problems and usually caring for our own pets as well, so please don't discredit the pet store people immediately.

In your mom's and the employees' defense, a 40 gallon tank would be a huge pain in the ass to clean. They're big, they're bulky, they're heavy. I can awkwardly manhandle an empty 40 gallon a short distance, but for my smaller coworkers, a 40 gallon tank requires a team lift. Any glass tank is harder to clean than the plastic ones, but in your defense, even the biggest plastic hamster cages are a bit small. Manhandling a 40 gallon might not seem so bad now, but a year from now when the cage needs cleaned and you're tired and just want to get it over with, you'd be wishing you had something smaller. So something like a 20 long is a really good compromise.

The wheels are always a debate among people that actually do any research. To me, too small just looks unnatural and uncomfortable. Too big and it can have so much momentum that when the hamster stops running, they get flung clear across the cage and into the wall. It's kinda funny to watch, but probably isn't the best to have happen every time they go for a run. Although we haven't gotten them in store, those spinning saucers have been getting popular and might be something to look into. Something like this.

It sounds like you ended up with a pretty decent cage that'll be more manageable when you have to do any work on it. And if you're that interested and excited in your pet's care, you'll be able to provide all the best food and bedding and attention which is really what I think makes the best pet owner. I think you'll still have a very happy hamster.
