It's not pretty lol. We tried to zip tie everything together to make it at least understandable haha

EDIT: Hijacking this post since there are a LOT of common questions. Oh and /u/smilenataliew is the wife :)

FAQ:

>How did you connect everything to the TV/What adapters did you use?

NES through Gamecube (bottom 4): We have a 4-input composite switcher (those Yellow/Red/White cables) between the N64 and Gamecube, connected to our TV's 3.5mm composite port (which looks like a headphone jack), which we convert with cables like these. We do not recommend a composite to HDMI converter, as the output (might) look garbled from older systems (it did for us).

Wii: Component cables to HDMI converter, then into a remote controlled HDMI switcher (switcher and controller can both be seen to the left of Kirby Amiibo/the Wii)

WiiU & Switch: HDMI to the same HDMI switcher

>Don't the controllers just fall out when you open the case? How are they secured?

The NES controller is resting on a WiiU controller stand, oddly enough!
The SNES controller is the most finnicky. It's slightly leaning back on its own cords, but it's hard to get it to stay put.
The N64 controller is leaned against a stack of N64 games--it's definitely the system my wife and I have the most games for already!
The Gamecube controller is leaning against two other stacked gamecube controllers.
The Wii controller is just just leaning up against a thick piece of cardboard (more cardboard is also holding up the NES and SNES systems since the bottom of their doors would block view of the systems otherwise. My wife intends to wrap all cardboard with contact paper to make it all more decorative, she's very crafty!)
The WiiU has the same controllers as the Wii, except for the screen one, which is on a stand that actually charges the unit while it sits on top of the WiiU system!
The Switch controller actually stands on its own with the joy cons connected to them, but I've decided to actually show the charging station we bought with the joy cons connected to it so that they'll always be charged and ready to go!

>Where are the games?

Behind the controllers! In fact the N64 controller is leaning on a stack of them.

>Cable management? Do you have controller extenders?

Lots of zip ties in the back, and as for controller cables, we bought ~100 of those velcro straps for cords so we can wrap them up for neat display storage without wrapping the cords around the controllers. We also have extension cords for all corded controllers since the consoles don't exactly come out of the unit!

>Where can I get the display case?

It's a piece of furniture so it's a bit expensive, but it's definitely what we wanted after searching for a couple weeks! It's on Amazon

>You could have just emulated it all!

I love having and playing on the original consoles, but emulation is also awesome!

>Where's the Virtual Boy?

It doesn't connect to the TV so I didn't feel the need to get it for this project, but I DO want it for my collection! (Also kids should wait a bit before they play with a 3D device, even the 3DS)

>Where's Nintendo's even older console, the Color TV-Game?/Where's the 64DD?

Those were released Japan only, but I might still want to get them! I believe the controller and the console for Color TV-Game are both one unit, and space is limited, so it might be tough to integrate it if I want to get it!

>Where's the TV? CRT??

Mounted on the wall above the mantle. Sorry, no CRT...yet.

>PHOTOSHOPPED!/I swear I saw this before!

lol why would anyone photoshop this? Definitely real. I'll provide a few more images if I can. And definitely my setup! Though I'm sure I'm not the first to do something similar.

>lol fake niece

The niece and story are real, but if I'm being perfectly honest this is more for me than her haha

u/gheezeizkryst · 14 pointsr/gaming

Look on Amazon for people who make extension cables for older controllers. My girlfriend and I have a similar set up in our living room and have 6ft extensions for our Super Nintendo controllers (these to be exact) so we can play from the couch with ease!

u/8Bits1132 · 10 pointsr/RetroPie

There are a few that come to mind when it comes to soft shutdown cases. Most, if not all, cases in this list require the installation of a script, which can be done through the Raspbian terminal (accessed by quitting EmulationStation, either by pressing F4 or by pressing START while in ES and selecting the bottom menu item, then Quit EmulationStation). You could also access the terminal through SSH using PuTTY.

I had good experience with the 8Bitdo NES30.
http://www.nes30.com/

Alternative if you have the Original NES pad, you could use a Mayflash adapter that converts NES / SNES to USB.

Hope that helped!

Anyone got any interesting setups/tv's? Idk why i'm writing this but here are the things I bring to tourneys.

Album link

My Tv Is by far the most eye catching thing. I bought 350 Fortune cookies and have been just taping them on there whenever I finish one. I am pretty much out of them so I have quite a bit all over the TV. The air fresheners were to bring some nice smells to any tournament I went to.

Standard Gamecube: 1.02 melee with newest 20xx TE and vanilla melee memory cards. This is the video cable IOnebring. It has s video + regular composite so I don't have to bring a powered splitter. Explaining more below.

Recording/Streaming setup: This consists of a Webcam which also records player/crowd audio (also a 16 ft extension). An Elgato with 16ft extension. Then I have 2 non-powered composite splitters. I plug in the composite video from the game cube directly into my TV and the S video into the elgato. The result isn't actually too bad (if someone knows how to deinterlace for better video hmu).

The last thing is My Controller: Someone on etsy painted it for me right before big house and so far it's a great purchase. It is of a Palestinian flag and has my tag on it. it doesn't feel any different from any other game cube controller which is great.

Edit: forgot about my headphone setup. I have sennheiser Momentums I bring with my headphone amp and plug that into the tv's audio with one of These. This has a pass through meaning other people can listen through the TV and I can adjust the volume with my amp. I also bring another headphone splitter so people can listen with their headphones.

I'd rather get 5 good games than 52 crappy ones

So, I'm a bit of a snob when it comes to how I want my stuff to look.

The Rasptendo and the Nespi cases both enclose the pi completely, and have the usb ports at the front which makes it look like controller ports.

https://www.amazon.com/Functional-POWER-Button-Retroflag-Rasberry/dp/B073ZC4TZY

Rasptendo:

https://www.amazon.com/Rasptendo-Retro-Gaming-Case-Raspberry/dp/B076F7VDR2

Both of them have the working power and reset buttons as well, though the rasptendo gives you the option to make it a safe shutdown for both the power and reset switches. (Reset's optional but needs soldering to do safe shutdown, power button doesn't need any soldering.)

There's a third option now

https://www.amazon.com/Raspberry-facing-Functional-Cooling-BassTop/dp/B0794V4HRQ/ref=sr_1_14?ie=UTF8&qid=1518188210&sr=8-14&keywords=snes+raspberry+pi

The nice part about these cases is that they SHOULD be able to support other SBC's that are the same shape as the pi as long as the ports are aligned correctly. (Like the tinkerboard).

Nope - you need to create a new account - But they ship from Japan in about 4 days to the US - And the total cost with shipping is about $83 ( $69 for the system and $14 shipping right now with the current exchange rate) - So takes a few minutes to make an account (first change the site language from Japanese to English - which translates most of the pages - then use Google translate for any portions you need to read that are not translated) create the account - enter your shipping info etc. and order.

If that is too much work use your Amazon Prime and order from the US site for about $5 -$10 more ( $90.90 right now- from several Japanese companies using the Amazon Fullfillment centers so shipped via Prime) https://www.amazon.com/Nintendo-Super-Famicom-Classic-Console-Japanese/dp/B075MK6THW/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1523644480&sr=8-1&keywords=super+famicom+mini

u/mrpopsicleman · 4 pointsr/nesclassicmods

> huh, I️ wonder why.

Because they've got new models coming in February 2018 to coincide with the Analogue Super NT.

u/AbstractCalamity · 4 pointsr/patientgamers

The N64 uses 2 cables, a power cable and an A/V cable. The power cable is completely proprietary and unique to the N64 and it looks like this.

The A/V cable is a standard RCA composite (yellow-red-white) on one end. The other end is a proprietary connector shared by the N64 and Gamecube. If you have a Gamecube or find a Gamecube A/V cable, you can use it for the N64 as they use identical cables. It looks like this.

If you have a newer TV and it doesn't have composite input, you'll need to find some kind of adapter. Composite cables have 3 channels: left-audio (white), right-audio (red), and video (yellow). The audio channels (red and white) can be plugged directly into your sound system if you have RCA inputs, or they can be fairly easily adapted to whatever inputs your sound system has.

The video channel (yellow) might be more problematic. Your best bet might be to adapt from RCA to coaxel or s-video, if your TV has either of those inputs. If you're limited to HDMI and HD component (red-white-green-blue-red), search for "composite to HDMI adapter" or "composite to component adapter."

Depending on the adapter you get, you might not need to route the audio separately as I described above. Just note that it is an option available if necessity demands it.

u/RLutz · 4 pointsr/gaming

I laughed harder at this than anything I've seen on the Internet in at least a year.

I had a SNES controller that instead of having a proper D-Pad had a little sunk-in-well with a touch sensitive plate in it, it also had at least 4 or 5 toggle switches for turbo modes, and my recollection as an 8 year old was that it was roughly 4x the size of the original X-Box controller.

edit: It's as bad as I remembered: http://www.amazon.com/Triax-Turbo-Touch-Super-Nintendo-Controller/dp/B001DBCW2E

That's a great start to a solid collection, good job and I'm sure he'll appreciate it. You can also likely find a copy of StarFox for < 20$ online and have it on Christmas to top it off.

This is something worth considering getting him for Christmas if you really want to blow him away though - http://www.stoneagegamer.com/sd2snes-basic.html

Tl;dr - Not only can you play almost every single SNES game (SuperFX games aren't supported sadly) from a single cart (saving a lot of money in the long run, you can obviously still buy/collect games you have a serious attachment to) from an 8GB SD card, but it also supports ridiculous features such as CD quality audio and full motion video via its MSU-1 Chipset - https://youtu.be/v788KslHvbU

I bought one for myself almost two years ago and still use it on an almost weekly basis, it never fails to blow my friends minds away when they see it.

One more thing, whether you do all the other stuff or not, definitely get these unless you want to six < 6 feet from the TV - https://www.amazon.com/Extension-Cable-Super-Nintendo-SNES-Controller/dp/B005WMIR4C

u/potiphar1887 · 3 pointsr/n64

How about Amazon? Surely there's a local business in Sydney that offers RCA cables for cheaper than the price of shipping to Australia, but it's something in the meantime.

u/Anergos · 2 pointsr/pcgaming

If your monitor has only VGA (DSUB) input:
---

for the PS3: an HDMI to VGA adapter.

for the N64: Composite to VGA converter

for the SNES: The above converter plus a component cable like this if you don't already have one.

-------------

If your monitor has only DVI input:
----

for the PS3: An HDMI to DVI cable (or adapter).

for the N64: the above cable/adapter plus component to HDMI converter

for the SNES: both of the above plus a component cable like this if you don't already have one.

u/rootbeer_racinette · 2 pointsr/buildapcsales

I mean yeah, it's got a cross on it. But I couldn't use it to play Hollow Knight: there wasn't enough feedback to use it in a touch sensitive way and it was too smooth for me to locate my thumb properly 100% of the time.

And I'm saying this as someone who used a SNES Triax Turbo Touch 360 all the time in the 90s without issue. The biggest different was that the Touch 360 had stronger raised lines and you could roll your thumb around the octagonal rim of the hole to do stuff like aim diagonally in Metroid or skate smoothly in NHL 94.

There are probably other uses for the left area as a touch pad but I haven't really found a compelling one.

u/NRB · 2 pointsr/gaming

When I was younger we had one of these: http://www.amazon.com/Turbo-Wireless-Remote-System-Super-Nintendo/dp/B003IEB34W

From what I remember it worked alright.

u/hugeyakmen · 2 pointsr/raspberry_pi

He mentions using SNES extension cables in the post but his link is to Amazon Germany. Here is a similar part on Amazon US.

u/thankyouforfu · 2 pointsr/snes

First off, you can get a controller extension cable to add 6ft (or get two and add 12ft). Anyways, I recommend getting one of the new ones UndeadArgos recommended because they're the easiest to find.

u/UndeadArgos · 2 pointsr/snes

I like this one: http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00823PWUK?pc_redir=1414332641&robot_redir=1

The d-pad isn't perfect bit it's not the worst I've used. There's a tradeoff in precision control but I think its worth it.

u/SupremeLeaderSnoke · 2 pointsr/gaming

Hyperkin recently made a laser snes mouse for the snes and I picked one up. Sadly it's not as good as you would think for drawing (it works but it's a bit to osensative even when you adjust the in game mouse speed) but it makes you a god at fly swatting!

u/foogles · 2 pointsr/SBCGaming

This is my favorite set up to give friends. Looks good and mostly foolproof hardware wise!

Raspberry Pi 3 Model B

Rasptendo SNES Case (IMO, connect the power button as intended, but either solder the reset button as per the method mentioned in there or don't connect it at all. This way there's no way for the user to do a non-safe shutdown of the OS)

Dual fan heatsink

Bluetooth adapter (more reliable than built-in bluetooth, change /boot/config.txt to disable onboard Bluetooth)

PS3 SIXAXIS Controller (Dualshock 3's work too, but I like the legit OEM ones, and those are hard to find. The convincing bootlegs/fakes are usually impossible to tell apart from legit ones when ordering online. That's why I look for used SIXAXIS controllers - no bootlegs. Also, I use PS3 controllers because pairing can be done or re-done entirely by connecting up mini-USB cables. No menus necessary once you set it up the first time!)

Sandisk 64GB MicroSD

Canakit PSU

HDMI cable, Mini-USB cable.

-----

For a more serious, less user-friendly but more overclockable setup, ditch the case/heatsink above and go with these instead:

Some kind of heatsink, I'm using one from the Kintaro case but I suspect the cheap stick-on heatsinks are probably fine too

this open-air case (throw out the fan as it's way too loud... I'm sure other open-air cases will work but I like that this one has the 40mm setup for the below fan and the little grille to prevent curious fingers from getting in there at least)

this Noctua 40mm 5v fan (expensive, but quiet and provides solid cooling)

u/Hougaiidesu · 2 pointsr/snes

I use these, I love them. They're RF instead of IR, works much better. You can also find 2 packs online for pretty cheap.

Extension cables work too, I have those as well.

I recently bought a drum controller for the switch version, and ive been having trouble hitting kats with it. Any tips on how to not fuck up and miss the rim? I have this 3rd party drum by finera.

I have the classic controller to SNES and it works great. I have a ton of Raphnet's adapters actually and I really like them.

There is a hyperkin one that works well and is cheaper for the SNES to Wiimote/Classic Edition. I own this one as well:

You need to get one of these -
https://www.amazon.com/Fighting-Commander-Wireless-Controller-Officially-Licensed/dp/B01A6GCN70

Pretty good for under $20 and it has built in autofire, perfect for button masers like this game.

u/rydamusprime17 · 1 pointr/snes

I would just stick to what you got. From my experiences anything that could actually make it look better cost too much.

Edit: you could try this, i have no idea how good the quality is but you can use them in SNES, N64 and GameCube...

If your TV has SCART inputs you could also get great picture quality out if that but it can be costly

More information please. Model of television and what the SNES has for output now -- composite (yellow, white, red) or RF switch?

Some newer TVs are getting rid of composite in, but many still have them. You just need that cable if your SNES is equipped with an RF switch. The cable is the same up to GameCube.

This one? Someone asked if they work with the Super Scope, which I'm pretty sure uses the extra pins that the multitap uses to separate the controllers, and got "it doesn't work at all" as a response.

u/nesswitchnerd · 1 pointr/gaming

That's just depressing my friend. But order one now, before they get more in stock. I have dealt with this issue many times by now. i remember times when the GBA, Wii, PS3, PS4 were all sold out... I just research what is the next big first party game and I just order the console and wait. Usually (in Wiis, GBAs and PS4s case) I got them all. Just tell hin/her to keep looking for it and he/she will find one unit (or tell hin/her to just preorder the Splatoon 2 bundle: https://www.amazon.de/Nintendo-Switch-Konsole-Neon-Blau-Neon-Rot-Splatoon/dp/B06XG8S548 (this is the german Amazon site, to show you an example of how the bundle looks like))

Not sure how much this could help you since you are in Canada but maybe they ship there? IDK. I've ordered them from the NA Amazon and they work well. Sometimes they have to be pushed out a wee bit for the cartridge to slide in but otherwise they work well enough and are cheap I think. These are 6 covers for 7 USD. My advice would be to use an original SNES controller with a USB adapter.

This is by far my favourite since you can connect an original NES AND SNES controller while only using one USB port:
