This is generally used for workstations or environments to output two displays from a single port; Ie to projector and a monitor.

Its a DMS-59 connector.

You could use an adapter like this.

Get a hub with a detachable cable and a longer USB C cable. You will be happier.

https://smile.amazon.com/avedio-links-Delivery-Portable-Switch-Gray/dp/B07MF63WQ2

As for cable, 5gbps is enough for you because you are only driving each lane at 5gbps max -- your hub contains a DisplayPort 1.2 to HDMI 2.0 adapter and DP 1.2 needs less than 5gbps per lane.

So https://www.monoprice.com/product?p_id=24284 even longer is super expensive and can be found at https://www.ntcdistributing.com/usb-3-1-type-c/active-extension-cable/ -- but I do not see a C female to C male cable here...

Things won't work with this adapter. You are currently using it backwards. Its DVI side is intended for a graphics card, and its VGA side is intended for a VGA monitor.

The problem is the laptop is outputting an analog VGA signal, but the monitor needs a digital DVI-D signal. The adapter is a type of adapter that is just wiring the pins from one side to the pins on the other side, it's not changing anything about the signal. The signal is still analog and your monitor doesn't know what to do with it.

There are two very different DVI connections:

  • DVI-D = digital
  • DVI-A = analog, same signal as VGA

Then on the graphics card, there is sometimes another port named "DVI-I". This DVI-I thing can connect to both VGA or to DVI-D. The adapter you have is intended for this DVI-I port. It's intended to connect a VGA monitor to the graphics card. You can't use this adapter backwards, to connect a DVI-D monitor to a VGA output from a graphics card.

You would need an adapter that is advertised as being an "active" adapter. That "active" means it has some electronics inside it and is more expensive.

Besides its VGA output, does your laptop have another video output?

    EDIT:

Here's an example about what kind of adapter you would need to use the laptop's VGA port with a DVI monitor:

But I notice there is someone in the comments for that product that says it didn't work with his Apple Cinema display.

This hack will probably work with other sources. But if you're going to use a Pi or other HDMI device, you're better off converting to VGA, adding a $10 VGA scanline generator, and then outputting to a monitor with VGA input, or converting back to LVDS if you're using a bare LCD panel (like an A1Up monitor).

you need a DMS-59 breakout cable.

http://www.amazon.com/HP-Y-Splitter-338285-008-Discontinued-Manufacturer/dp/B0045JSO32/

i have no idea why it worked the first time. technically speaking you can take out the video card thats inside of it and use the VGA thats right on the back...but not while the video card is in.

edit: yup, looks like its damaged. i would have Dell come out to replace it and also bring the breakout cable because it should come with the computer.

No Problem man! The reason why I was able to get into detail very well is because I currently have my Xbox 360 and PS3 hooked into my desktop setup via VGA (xbox 360) and DVI (using a DVI to HDMI adapter for the PS3)

I would recommend watching these two techquickies videos to get up-to-date with what the monitors standards are, and screen Resolutions

HDMI, DisplayPort, VGA, and DVI as Fast As Possible

Resolution - Not Just a Number as Fast As Possible

The EASIEST option is to get a new computer monitor that has HDMI with Speakers (kind of like this one, look for a screen that has all these ports on it) for that PS4 upgrade that you are looking for, otherwise you will be looking for HDMI to VGA adapters that may work but I have never used one before so I can't guarantee if it will work with the ps4.

Now with the easiest option out of the way, Gaming on a Computer screen with an Xbox 360 is kind of simple. Buy an Xbox 360 VGA cable off of amazon or at local game store. Make sure you get a RCA to 3.5 adapter for the audio, because the next part gets interesting. If you are using with your computer at the desk all you have to do is plug the 3.5 adapter into your PC's Line-In port which is the blue plug port, then after its plugged-in go to your pc and go to your pc sound icon in the lower right hand corner and left click it and click on the playback devices, then click on to the line in icon and click on the properties button and that will bring out the line-in properties window, click on the listen tab and the check mark the listen to this device box and you should have sound coming through your speakers while having it hooked into your pc. You will have to have you PC running to have this work. If that is too much get this adapter (A) and this Adapter(B) and plug the green wire plug from the speaker into Adapter B and and one end from Adapter B into the computer and the other end into Adapter A, if you go this route you will not need the very first RCA to 3.5 adapter that i gave you.

Now with the PS4 use this adapter (can't guarantee if it will work) and Plug the Green cord into the audio in, and I think you will have to power it via USB. and make sure you have a VGA cable to plug into the adapter and to the screen. Make sure you switch the screen source from DVI to VGA when gaming, then back for PC use

TL:DR Get a new monitor with an HDMI, DVI, and VGA port that has speakers built in or you will have to follow the steps that I provided up to get an VGA port to work with an xbox 360 and MAYBE a PS4.

Hopefully this helps, and all the buy links that i have provided are for Amazon UK, and I believe most tech store will have most of these items as well.

Just FYI you can get this in a smaller form factor and cheaper: https://www.amazon.com/HYZUO-Adapter-Active-Converter-Monitor/dp/B07KD7LTLB

Any HDMI to VGA converter worth its salt will have a 3.5mm stereo audio output jack on it to break out the audio.

I haven't used any myself but you can see the audio sockets on these various converters:

4 for $6.99. I've got a few of these. Its things like this that help me make use of excess surplus cables, parts, etc, that I can usually get for free.

u/LEEMakesThings · 1 pointr/techsupport

Go ahead and get a Displayport to VGA adapter . Put the DP end in the GPU and use a VGA cable from the adapter to the monitor.

u/SchruteFarms_Inc · 1 pointr/rit

This situation is different for everyone but for me the transition wasn't bad. For the monitor in my room I bought an HDMI to USB C cable so there's no need for an adapter. For the cases where I need an adapter for USB 3 to C, I bought two of these. They also have a bunch of flash drives that have USB C on one end and 3 on the other. If you think you'll need more than this you can just get a hub like this one and keep it in your backpack.

I rarely find myself using these though and the new version of Xcode allows me to upload apps to my phone wirelessly which helps.

Yeah I was thinking this:

I always forget DMS is a thing.

Are you splitting DVI-I?

This what you're using? This particular one has pretty awful reviews, but is it this type?

u/afourthfool · 1 pointr/AskTechnology

Does your "tv" have this connection (with the 15 holes) on it somewhere? if so, here your doohickey: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B003QNDDL6/

u/DreadLord64 · 1 pointr/buildapc

This is the TV.
And this is the adapter I want to buy.

Would this work?

u/tsoldrin · 1 pointr/AskReddit

I always thought monitors looked clearer, but I never used a tv that big. Anyhow, something like this might work... or something similar, using your old S-video cable. Probably the better option is a different adapter that goes straight through though... like VGA2RGB. Strangely cheap... last time I shopped for cables they were an arm and a leg.

u/Savage_Cat05 · 0 pointsr/techsupport

Use splitters where needed, just plug the splitter into the back of a monitor, and plug each computer into one of the ports, I work with these a lot, I do tech support at a school where these are regularly required

Here is a DVI one

Here is a VGA one
https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B06XJNMDBL/ref=psdcmw_15782091_t1_B005H3I38G

Please note that this solution is by no means a great one, but it is cheap, and to get a signal from one the other must be off or disconnected
