Top Reddit comments about Vitamin D Supplements:

Love this! Here's my progress album. The first two images are from January 5th, the middle two are from the end of December, and the last two are from February 10th.

I've made tons of changes over the last month or so, so it is a bit difficult to pinpoint exactly what helped my skin. It seems to have been a combination of many positive changes. Here is the list:

  • Moved from the dry mountain air to a place with better quality water and more humidity
  • Graduated college, which was a huge stressor and likely contributed to my breakouts. I've been getting much more sleep as a side effect of not having classes anymore.
  • Started using sheet masks daily! I stockpile Dermal Korea's Green Tea Collagen masks, but I also love their "White" mask as it helps lighten redness temporarily. I saw a huge improvement in pigmentation right when I started using the masks. They don't break me out or sting the way other sheet mask brands have, so I'm a customer for life. Plus, topical application of green tea is scientifically supported to be awesome for your skin.
  • Vitamin D supplements. I take 6,000 IUs daily of Vitafusion's D3 supplement. I decided to start taking these after doing some research on vitamin D and it's correlation to acne. Every time I go on vacation somewhere sunny, my skin is beautiful because of the sun exposure, so I thought supplementing with D would help!
  • Cut my sugar intake to a fraction of what it was before

I also continue to use Retin-A most nights, which has been a routine staple for me for a long time, and most days I use Duac (benzoyl peroxide + clindamycin). I use Hada Labo's hyaluronic acid hydrating serum day and night, and for moisturizer I use St. Ives' collagen elastin lotion in the tub, as it doesn't have stearyl alcohol but is not based in silicones, both which are no-nos for me and make my moisturizer search a real struggle. My sunscreen is Elta MD UV Clear. I wash with Garnier Micellar water with the pink cap.

I'm so happy with the new direction my skin is taking, because I was starting to lose hope. I hated putting on makeup because it would fucking hurt to do it, and even concealer couldn't cover up the redness of my acne. I hid out in my house as much as possible because I was so ashamed of my face. It's so nice to be out of the woods, and at this point I'm just hoping all of the scarring and PIH will continue to improve.

>If it were truthful, of course.

B12 comes from microorganisms, not animals. I get my D3 from lichen.

Not sure you want to take creatine supplements, but as mammals, we have creatine and taurine ourselves.

DHA can be plant- or yeast-based.

Heme iron has negative effects (such as increased levels of heart disease) on the body, so I avoid it.

Thoughts?

This guy is the full package and has more understanding in this space than the cardiologist I work with who NEVER prescribe any form of vitamin K and in fact only think about it in terms of K1 and it’s effects on Coumadin.

K2-7 were nutrients found in fermented foods and raw diary. Now Those things don’t exist in any reasonable amount in today’s grocery store/USDA model of a food system.

I have taken one of these twice a day for years since 2013. /u/I will be switching to this starting this month.

This year I had a cardiac cath and cardiac MRI as well as the obvious ECHO for that matter. Nothing, despite my fluctuations in weight, years of high CRPhs and homocysteine. They even performed intra-artery ultra sound and came up with nothing still.

Despite my hyper insulinemia my A1c is 4.2-5.2 depending on the diet and if metformin is being used at the time. I also have youth on my side as I’m an 80s child.

My cardiologist was astounded and said I can’t put zero CAD but I couldn’t find any so I put <15%. I think I owe a lot to nutrient timing and k2 supplements.

Thorne Research - 3-K Complete is the one I take.

Looking at the nutrition info, you'll see there are 3 forms. The "how much" value is different for each form.

There are foods, too (as for all vitamins!) - Brocolli, brussels sprouts, spinach...

As far as "standard multivitamin", my own thought on that is maybe there's no such thing as a "standard" multivitamin, because every manufacturer includes different vitamins, and different amounts of the included vitamins, plus most manufacturers make several multivitamin versions, Men's, Women's, Senior's, "High potency", etc. And sometimes, reading the label, you find the supposed "High potency" version is nearly identical to the ingredients in what they label as their "Regular" strength version.

In short, I always read the labels.

You don't need D3 if you supplement regularly. The only studies that have shown superiority of D3 is for people who are deficient and need to take monthly megadoses. I take these:

> Are there any differences to Vitamin D supplementation to natural sources such as the sun and diet? Are these differences something I should be concerned about for general health?

I don't believe so.

> Finally, what is the best way to supplement Vitamin D?

I just got these but they were a little less when I did. 5000IU is a good dose, especially with the weather we get here, and a years supply is about £15.

u/anachronic · 3 pointsr/vegan

This is what I take, but there's other options on amazon too.

I was low in D last year when I got routine bloodwork (I live in the northeast and hate the sun, so no surprise there) and it's helped bring my levels up.

u/Trooper636 · 3 pointsr/phenibut

From what I've read, you also need a bit of vitamin k2 in order to efficiently process the D - But you can find capsules with k2+D for basically the same price. Good luck!

u/agentspore · 3 pointsr/AsianBeauty

i like this list because it gives supplemented food options. a lot of vitamin d is in animal products, which makes it harder for people who do not eat the animals to get vitamin d. it is better to take a supplement as well, however, is what my doctor told me, because it can be difficult to get enough vitamin d just from the diet. these are the supplements i prefer, because they are gummy and i hate to swallow pills.

u/fabs0000 · 3 pointsr/ketojapan

These are the two supplements I take that I've found work best for reducing cramps (Amazon Japan links, below):

Potassium (Citrate) https://www.amazon.co.jp/gp/product/B000BTA4DI/

Magnesium https://www.amazon.co.jp/gp/product/B00E3S51HM/

Be careful, and properly check the label, when taking off-the-shelf Magnesium supplements bought here in Japan, as it tends to be mixed with calcium (in supplemental form), which could lead to some hearth/arrhythmia issues. At one stage I was getting regular, scary heart palpitations before I switched to straight chelated magnesium / magnesium citrate.
Regarding these heart palpitations, they basically never came back when I stopped / lowered my calcium supplementation and started taking vitamin K2 (which supposedly helps with calcium absorption, mitigate build up in blood [or something like that]). By the way, the best food source for K2 is, wait for it, Japanese Natto! Hahah. Or take it in supplemental form, found here:

Vitam K2 (MK7) https://www.amazon.co.jp/gp/product/B00O4BQIQQ/

If you're eager to just try electrolyte supplements, you can find low sugar "Ion Drink" powders pretty easily at chemists. Be sure to check the labels to properly understand what exact minerals they contain.

> vitamin D3

I'll second that! I normally have a dip in energy during winter, since I'm not getting out in the sun as much. I started taking a vegan D3 supplement (https://www.amazon.com/VEGAN-VITAMIN-Gummy-Plant-MaryRuth/dp/B01AVXA172) a few months ago and noticed a difference in energy!

I started taking the supplement after getting blood-work done and my D level was slightly low.

Also - cronometer is a great tool!

u/jtpinnyc · 3 pointsr/Nootropics

This is the brand of K2 I take. Good high dose.

https://www.amazon.com/Relentless-Improvement-Naturally-Derived-No-Fillers-Science-Based/dp/B00GZVM092

If money is no object, the Thorne drops are considered the best in terms of bioavailability:

https://www.amazon.com/Thorne-Research-Vitamin-Liquid-drop/dp/B000FGWDTK

This is MK4, which is the K2 form that's been studied the most in terms of increasing bone density. MK4 doesn't stay in the blood for very long though - for that, you need MK7. It stays in the blood for much longer, but the studies haven't yet been done to determine whether it's as good as MK4 for building bone density (the reason why I take K2). If your primary need for K2 is for improving sleep, maybe MK7 might be better? I also take MK7 sometimes, the best one I've found is this one:

https://www.amazon.com/absorption-clinically-Formulated-Certified-Veggie-Softgels/dp/B00JGCPAYY

Bear in mind that you need to take K2 with a fat source to maximize availability - taking it without fat is a total waste. The K7 brand above includes coconut oil in the capsule for this reason, but I'm not sure it's enough. I always take K2 with a nice big spoonful of hemp oil.

It's also worth pointing out that K2 MK4 has been shown to increase testosterone levels, which may be a bonus or a deal killer depending on your current levels.

u/nevercomment · 2 pointsr/Fitness

u/SparklingLimeade · 2 pointsr/soylent

The calcium/vitK/vitD pills? You could replace those with any other sources of vitamin D and K that you like. The calcium portion is unnecessary. There are several other supplements that would work. Thorne research and NOW are two popular options. You may be able to find others that are easier for you to get.

To give you an idea of what would be missing, if you omitted that ingredient entirely you'd only be short about 1/3 your vitamin D and 1/2 your vitamin K. The D can be made up with sunlight and if you eat greens with any regularity that would make up the K.

u/paninilincoln · 2 pointsr/AsianBeauty
u/skysplitter · 2 pointsr/xxketo

I'm in the exact opposite boat as you, but wanted to point out a few things in case it's helpful.

  • it's the winter, and SAD can bog you down as well as regular depression. Some winters are much worse for me than others. Thankfully spring and sun are just about here.

  • Vitamin D. My levels are a struggle to keep up, and I've seen some bloggers talking about this so I may give it a whirl.

  • like others have said, electrolytes. Yesterday I worked out and didn't keep up on them and it's bananas how shitty I felt this morning. But then quickly perked up with some keto aid. The body is a drama queen at times!

I wish you luck in figuring it out. Depression is not fun :-/
u/QueenOphelia · 2 pointsr/breastfeeding

Enfamil has vitamin D drops, for some babies (including mine) they caused SEVERE tummy cramps- my little man who was an angel, would scream inconsolably for hours on end, I stopped that immediantly and started taking 4000IUs a day ot Vit. D so it would go thru the milk. I just ordered Carlson Ddrops Enfamil is a whole 1mL dropper full (nasty taste too) and the Ddrops is only 1 drop, that way I can put it right on my nipple before a feeding rather than shoving a dropper down his throat

good luck, sleep when you can, wish you the best!

Vitamin D supplements are readily absorbed. Greger recommends 2000 IU for everyone. I’ve been taking it for years and my levels are perfect.

This is a really good one.

u/Fenris78 · 2 pointsr/FitnessUK

That's true, although fairly sure these are 100% RDA for all the vitamins at least. I also take a separate D3 supplement (link), cod liver oil (H&B when they have a penny sale on), green tea extract (MyProtein), and Magnesium (H&B) which I'll probably stop once I run out. The D3 definitely seems to be a worthwhile addition imo.

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00O4BQIQQ/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER&psc=1

However, I recently switched to Life Extension version because it comes in tiny soft gels that are full of MCT oil....and Vit K is a fat soluble vitamin so it would make sense to me that the K2 would absorb better in that form than from the powdered veggie cap from Drs best. The LE soft gels are 45 mcg each vs 100 mcg each for the Drs Best capsules.

u/lahope · 1 pointr/SNPedia

I have homozygous mutations at COMT Val158Met (aka rs4680 aka Warrior/Worrier SNP). It is one of the most studied SNPs vis a vis personality. It is a marker of extraversion, introversion and ambiversion. Looks like you are AA there. Do you experience yourself as introverted? I'd start studying it on SNPedia and zeroing in on any of the studies that seem relevant. I see a MD who practices Integrative Medicine. He uses this chart in his practice. He took one look at my results and suggested Lithium Orotate 5 mg once a day with breakfast for COMT V158M. MAO-A I'm wild type GG ,but I do have some suggestions. You are heterozygous for one of the high homocysteine mutations MTHFR A1298C so you might want to have your homocysteine tested. (I'm heterozygous for MTHFR C677T and have very high homocysteine untreated). If your homocysteine is high, you might want to take a supplement containing balanced folate (not folic acid), B-12 and B-6 such as Metanx. Also take B-2 for your MAO-A rs6323 mutation. Or a good B-complex. Last but not least, for your VDR Bsm mutation which I also have, you may want to take Vit D in the am before breakfast like my Integrative Medicine MD has me do. He has me take it as an emulsion, Bio-D-Mulsion Forte. The way he has me take it is to about 30 minutes prior to eating. squeeze three little drops on my wrist and lick them off. Here it is on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/Biotics-Research-Bio-D-Mulsion-Forte-Vitamin/dp/B004HGF69I Hope this helps! btw I'm not bi-polar, so you might want to run my suggestions by the MD who is treating you.

Paler skin does get more sunburnt specifically because it doesn't block as much sunlight, which is needed for vitamin D synthesis. Really inconvenient way to get a vitamin you know... but due to being inside all the time, 75% of Americans (Probably applies to Canadians too) currently have a vitamin D deficiency. This number is even higher in black people who live in higher latitudes.

I'm not entirely sure at the moment. Right now I am doing the following:

  • 4 vitamin D drops/day [8,000iu] https://amzn.com/B004HGF69I
  • 3 turmeric capsules https://amzn.com/B00WT4D57K
  • 1 fish oil pill https://amzn.com/B004O2I9JO
  • No starch in diet along with lowish carbs. Lots of salad with some fruit. Lean meats
  • Low-impact cardio every evening [longboarding]
  • 8 hours sleep/night

Prices of those supplements may be less elsewhere...

For the past few years I have taken Humira as needed when the AS really flares up. But I haven't had a shot for months, and this is probably the best I have felt since I was diagnosed. I can't believe how well the above protocol is working. Hopefully it lasts: AS is a horrible disease!

I'm actually off Testosterone shots right now, and my natural production is slowly creeping upwards. My AS might have actually gotten worse on T shots. Impossible to say for sure, though.

>Oh, adding a fortified powder in place of a vitamin. That's, unfortunately, trickier. Certain things are more difficult to supplement around. This vitamin whey right? Vitamin D and panthothenic acid were incorrectly transcribed (one extra zero on each). You'll want more Vitamin D as well.

Correct. Yeah I wasn't too worried about D as it's easy to adjust. Thanks for checking the transcription!

>Vitamin C supplements are common enough. Vitamins D and K are frequently paired together in bone health supplements as well. This is one I've used. It comes in capsules which can be opened and added to powder if desired or simply consumed on the side.

Sounds good.

>Niacin, folate, and molybdenum are more difficult to find in targeted supplements. Fortunately I have a few ideas. First, the nutrition information in the People Chow recipe is slightly off. It was compiled from a mix of sources. I recommend the masa entry in the USDA food database. According to that your niacin level is higher than expected. Second, the things you're missing are in the vitamin whey so you may try adjusting that up while reducing the masa an equal amount. Even at 100g or so it doesn't quite make it but it takes the values close. Alternatively you could try a small dose of another vitamin on the side. Capsule multivitamins can be broken and added to powder for partial doses with the rest of your meal or taken at intervals.

Interesting. Im surprised that the nutrition info for Masa is off as it's so popular. Why hasn't he updated the recipe? Also folate supplements are common, I'll probably grab one and add it in.

>Lastly, you didn't mention it but the fiber is a bit off. I've found that People Chow responds very well to added fiber and would recommend a small fiber addition to anyone using. Ground psyllium husk in particular is popular.

Yeah I didn't mention it because it's so easy to adjust.

>I've compiled these recommendation in a recipe copy. It uses the different masa data, retranscribed vitamin whey, 20g more protein powder, and the D3/K2 capsule.

Nice, appreciate it!

>The D3/K2 is probably not all that necessary. You can synthesize D, vitamin K deficiency is so unheard of it was never discovered till someone ran an experiment on chickens. Also the vitamin whey has some. It may be optimal to have more but it will probably not hurt to skip.

I'll check on sourcing a supplement and may add it depending on cost, bottle size and ease.

The main reason I wanted to do this was because I already have the fortified whey and it's super cheap at a local store. Looks like it'll be pretty simple to compensate for its lacking areas and go from there. Moreover it dissolves easily and I dont have any issues with digestion with it, and tasted fine.

I'll check for d3/k2 and folate supplements and add them as needed and update the recipe you linked!

dude I've felt like that before. try what I did: start taking this Turmeric stuff twice a day. It's good for your liver and an antidepressant. Also if you're not getting enough sunlight and nutrition, you're probably vitamin D deficient, which also contributes to depression. Grab some D.
Last but not least, take these liver pills before drinking. It will help minimize the damage to your liver.

Another thing, see if you can get yourself into a detox for at least a weekend, try to get some help. sounds like you're on a rapid downward spiral. suicide ain't the answer man. PM me anytime.

You can cut costs on this by buying pinto beans and rice in bulk. I don't know if you have a WinCo near you, but it looks like if I order on their website I can get 25lb bags of pinto beans for $15.20 each and 25lb bags of brown rice for $15.68 each. Some places also sell soy beans in bulk if you want to make your own tofu (although you'll also want to fortify it with calcium, because otherwise you won't get enough with this combo of ingredients). Personally, I failed to make tofu from soy beans once and haven't bothered with that since. Easiest to just buy it premade. I usually get my broccoli frozen when it goes on sale. $1/lb is usually the price point I wait for and then I get as much as I can.

These are the specific supplements I take, if you are curious:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07H8RC4BZ

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01ATPBE6E

I chose that particular B12 supplement because it is a dissolvable tablet that goes under the tongue. I had a diagnosed B12 deficiency in the past and blood tests have confirmed that my B12 levels have gone back up into the ref range since I started taking this supplement.

I chose that vitamin D supplement because it is D3 instead of D2 (like many vegan vitamin D supplements) and it is suspended in coconut oil. Vitamin D is fat soluble. There is limited data regarding whether having it be directly suspended in lipids in the supplement itself is helpful, but I figure it can't hurt on a diet which is so low in fat to begin with. I also take it with my meal. Unfortunately, I have not been able to test whether my previously diagnosed vitamin d deficiency has been reversed, because my current insurance will not cover the test.

I've heard Chris Kreser and Robb Wolf recommend the Carlson drops. You can buy them everywhere and they're extremely cheap. Plus they're 4,000 IU per drop, compared to other products like now which are 100 IU per drop. So Carlson's is far more concentrated vitamin D, and less of the carrier oil (MCT).

u/dreiter · 1 pointr/nutrition

You went on 50,000 IU's per week and saw NO change in your D levels? That's about 7000 IU per day. Something is definitely wrong if that didn't increase your D levels. Are you on a very low fat diet? A few things to keep in mind.

  1. Vitamin D3 is generally better than D2 at raising your levels, so make sure your supplement is D3 (cholecalciferol and not ergocalciferol).
  2. Some studies have shown increased D3 absorption when taken with vitamin K2, so look for a supplement that includes K2.
  3. D3 is better absorbed when taken with fat, so try to take your supplement at the same time as a meal containing fat.

I personally use this chewable option and it has given good results.

I didn't choose to supplement with iron at all - I don't think that is necessary. I would do vitamin D though. I like the Carlson D drops for that. Just one drop on your nipple before nursing - easy peasy.

You can also order them on Amazon. I have these same ones but I suggested getting 10,000 IU to help you feel better. They're a little more spendy but you can shop around.
