I wear a watch daily as a college student, and I've been wearing one for the past three years. The same watch, in fact. I have a Citizen Ecodrive, plain black leather band with silver tone stainless hardware and a white face. Though I usually prefer gold and my next watch probably will be, I LOVE this watch. Up until this summer. I rarely took it off for anything - showering, swimming, whatever, it stayed on. I replaced the band about a year ago because I abuse it so regularly, but that thing is a trooper.

This is the exact one I have. It has a small but easy to read face with the date, doesn't have a battery to fuss over, and I've had no problem with losing time. The only reason I haven't been wearing it this summer is because of my job, which requires me to spend 5-6 hours in a heavily chlorinated pool, which is murderous to the leather and leaves a yucky film on the dial. Seriously, this watch is the bomb and I recommend it constantly.

What do you mean by doesn't tick? Are you talking about you want it to have a sweeping second hand like on a mechanical watch? If so you're not going to find a lot of options under $50. The SNK809 is a fantastic choice and it is close to your budget. You can add a leather band to it to get closer to what you want. Those two together make for a pretty good looking combo.

You can find some very cheap mechanical watches on Amazon that more of a "so cheap why the hell not" purchase if you have a few watches already. If you want something that is going to last a bit longer I would go with the Seiko personally.

Maybe this? They have it listed as a woman's watch, but 37mm is large enough that I would consider it more unisex. I'm a man with a 7 inch wrists, and I've worn as small as 34mm.

I used the below bracelet. Not flush to the case, but the polished center links really compliment the case in my eyes. Very solid feeling and a milled clasp is nice for the price.

The font on the Xentum is pretty unique. If that's what you like most about the watch I'm not sure where to point you. That said, the Timex weekender has a similar simple white face and you could easily swap in a red nato strap for another $15 bucks. I'd recommend a Seiko809 over the Timex because I feel like it's better bang for your dollar but, to my knowledge, they do not offer it with a white face.

Something about that watch sorta reminds me of this Braun watch but I'm not sure swapping the strap would be as easy/possible.

I would pick up a swatch for the everyday/match most things piece to balance out what you have. Or save some coin and pick up a Seiko 5 — have fun with that gift card!

I have not tried the Fitbit, but I have used the sport and each of the other gear watches over the years so I am pretty comfortable with them.

Battery Life

The batter life on it is good enough to get through a day or two comfortably, but it is nothing like pebble where you can just forget to charge for a few days and it not be an issue. I think my biggest complaint about battery life is it does not charge as quickly as the pebble. i used to love taking off my pebble to shower and it being fully charged after. The Gear will not charge completely, so it needs to be charged overnight. For me this is a pretty big downside.

Fitness features

I did not use it a lot for fitness, but the features it did have were excellent. The heart rate seemed to work pretty well, though I had nothing to compare it against. The steps were accurate enough and the UI was excellent. I really like Samsung's fitness app and that helps.

Notifications

I noticed no issue with notifications. There were easily accessible which was nice and I do not recall any missing notifications. The actions that you can do with it is not quite as good as pebble, but it does still let you interact with them.

Tasker support

I do not use tasker so I apologize I cannot comment on this part.

Smart Alarm

I'm not sure if they have it, but since the battery life isn't good enough for me to sleep with I never would've been able to use this feature. Also, even though the Sport is only a little thicker than a Time Steel, it feels thicker and less comfortable to sleep with.

Music Control

Music control is perfectly fine. I had it set up as a quick launch so I could get to it quickly and it worked great. No complaints.

AOD

The Sport has it and it works well. The fitbit does not from what I have heard. This is part of why I haven't gotten it as I don't want to shake my arm and hope it notices every time I want to tell time on my watch.


Honestly I was really happy with the Sport. I will probably go to it after my collection of Pebbles all die. Hopefully there will be an improved selection by then. Two things I wanted to note that havent come up so far. If you use a band that wraps like this one it will block the heart rate sensor. I knew that and figured that would not be a big deal, but they use the heart rate sensor to determine whether or not to turn the display on. So if you use bands like this, you will have difficulties with the screen turning on.

Also, the next generation of Gear watches are rumored to come out soon, so if you need a watch now, the Gear is a great option and will probably get updated as they are still updating the S2. But if you have a few months to decide it may be worth waiting to see the next gen of Gear as well as what Google I/O has in store for us. Google I/O starts soon IIRC.

Lovely watch! I have one as well and it's one of my favorites. To answer your question, I don't think that there's any "official" nato strap manufacturer - it refers to the style rather than any specific brand. Personally, I'm a big fan of Crown & Buckle. They've got a huge array of nato straps, including some leather ones that I'm particularly fond of. I think this C&B chromexel NATO would look excellent with the Maratac.

That said, I've currently got my Maratac on a brown Hirsch Liberty strap and I would be remiss if I didn't recommend that as well. It looks absolutely fantastic with the Maratac. The stitching on the strap matches the off-white lume on the dial almost exactly.

EDIT: for metal bracelets, I think that strapcode is pretty well-regarded. I like the looks of the Super Engineer Type II, and I've heard some good things, but I don't have one myself.

I got this one for $14 around April last year, it's really nice. Although the plastic face get's scuffed easily, so I recommend getting something to protect it, if you want to.

I think the eco-drive is a good direction but understated would be more like this

Going to drop some timex options here and here. The band isn't very neutral, but strap is something very easy to change. You can buy the watch and the band(here here and here) and still come within your budget.

I have one that came along with another nato from Amazon, and although it was leather, it was very thin, and just kinda looked like brown plastic. Picked up this one, still really cheap, but it's thicker, looks way nicer, and I've been wearing in on my new Seiko turtle, but it's also been on other watches in my collection. Just a nice looking strap for not much money. I just want one that looks like actual leather I guess.

yup, and you can buy this Deployant from Amazon/ iStrap, or for 3-4$ more you can get a cheap leather strap on it too, but that deployant works with any 2-piece tang strap to make it a deployant.

I prefer deployant because it's quicker to put on/take off and puts less stress on the strap than a regular buckle so it should last longer.

Diesel and Michael Kors are both fashion watch brands. I'm not familiar with Movado, but I'm willing to guess it's a fashion brand, too. The thing with these types of watches is that they are more about looks than anything else. Not that there's wrong with that—to each his own—but /r/Watches is admittedly biased towards automatic movements.

That said, with your kind of budget you could start off with a very nice basic Seiko diver. If you're after something that looks more like the watches you linked to, what about an Orient Pilot?

These are slightly out of your price range, but worth it in looks and technology. AWGM-100-1AC or AWGM-100b-1AC. There is also the AW590-1A.
These are all smaller G-Shock watches, but they wear very comfortably.



Personally, I like the bigger models because of their rugged masculine looks on my wrist (I have a 7.5" wrist). If you have a large wrist, you might also consider saving up for a GA-1000.

These bad boys go for under $50. They were made by the freaking USSR for its soldiers, and they're still being made today. If that doesn't make you happy, I don't think we can be friends.

This Orient is similar, plus it's an automatic mechanical watch, which is also very cool. Basically it means these watches don't need batteries, they get their energy automatically by being moved (shaken or by normal wear on the wrist). You'll be walking around with some amazing machine that only dies if you stop moving it, and technology that can be dated back to over 400 years ago. Aren't mechanical watches amazing?

I'm slightly late, but this is actually the Casio Royale with a strap from another AE1200-type watch - the AE1200WHB-1BV. Sometimes I do wear the steel bracelet it came with, but I prefer the look of the other strap.

I've put a lot of my cloth straps through some serious abuse and never had problems with them getting stinky. Your mileage may vary, of course. It's a great watch either way that will withstand a fair bit of abuse.

Oh, I recognize that watch. It's a Timex Harborside. I think it's quite nice looking.

Some similar looking alternatives from Timex are the Expedition Ranger, Expedition Ranger Solar, Expedition Scout 36mm and 40mm, and Allied Coastline, although I think the Harborside is the dressier looking of these.

On the other hand, if you liked the minimalist Fairfield, you can easily buy a cheap one like this and simply replace it with a more dressy strap, this is a well-known "trick."
