This is the one I picked up at Micheals today with a 40% off a single item coupon. Its a good starter setup I think!
Look around your town and see if there is anything does Laser Printing or if there is something called a Maker Lab or Maker Space. A laser printer does wood burning super fast and using a laser, you could get a lot done super quick. A Maker Lab or Maker Space is a place dedicated to crafting and sometimes it's free or admission is relatively low cost. They might have wood burning implements there or a full laser printer they could teach you to use.
If all else fails, get a wood burning pen and stencil kit like this one - https://www.amazon.com/Hobby-Wood-Burning-Tips-Stencils/dp/B00DE8LP3Q -
It should do the trick!
It's done with a tip like this: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B004BPVXII/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_awdb_l89PybV5MCSC0 and a wood burner.
You'll need a wood burning iron with adjustable temperature controls and some time to fine tune your temperature and technique to get the right effect. You'll have to rotate the workpiece every few indentations to get the right look.
I used the cheap weller for Christmas decorations and it was ok. If I wanted to go deeper I'd invest in a burner that I won't burn my fingers on the tip so easily. I'd really like this one, but out of my price range

If you get a lower end one they're only a few dollars more! Woodburner vs. Soldering iron. You would be saving ten bucks at most. I have this one and it works just fine for me.
Are you talking about a VersaTool/Walnut Hollow (or similar) with screw-in brass tips? I was getting the variety packs at Michaels using the 40-50% off coupons they always have, or at Menards for around $6. You can get the mini chisel tip by itself at Amazon for $5 each with free shipping. I never really used the other tips in the sets either.
Edit: you can get them for $2 here (regular, not mini, I think).
Haha, thanks man, you're welcome. Glad it was helpful. Not a Wizard, but I learned practical perspective from one: Scott Robertson's How to draw, objects and environments from your imagination book. Looking back, I'd bust through Norling: Perspective made easy first, then move to Scoro. Almost every little bit of what I know about perspective is down to Scott's awesomeness :)
I studied Mech Eng, but started down the path of drawing last year. My observational drawing sucks though :P So I pretty much went the full constructive/understanding route.
Your ruler plan sounds like a good one, though I'd consider a large Geometry triangle instead. The printed grid on them makes it easy to see if close-to-parallel lines are converging or not.
Let me know if there's anything else. Looking forward to seeing your next drawing though! It's always cool to see someone starting to delve into perspective so early.
I just upgraded to a Colwood Detailer (from the same walnut hollow tool you have) and I really love it so far!! It was about $150 on amazon, including shipping, 3 tips, and a pretty cool workbook. Amazon link
When I had shoulder surgery, they gave me a little bottle of this stuff.
